Post subject: Cingular 2125 Smartphone is Now Available
Folks, the Cingular 2125 Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone is now available on Cingular's Web site for $299. With a two year contract rebate the price comes down to $199. Smile

<img src="/images/Kris-Dec05-2125a.jpg">

Never before has a Smartphone's looks evoked strong responses from our readers. This Smartphone is different from the run-of-the-mill smart phones, camera phones and music phones. According to one our readers, Rebecca, it has created for itself a category called the HumpPhone. Laughing Love it, hate it; It has tons of awesome features minus the Wi-Fi, at an awesome price. Here is the specifications as per Cingular's Web site:

• Microsoft® Windows Mobile™ 5.0 Smartphone Edition
• Windows Media®Player 10 for playing music and video
• Bluetooth® connectivity for connecting wireless accessories
• 1.3 MP camera and video phone
• GPRS/EDGE High-Speed Data Access
• 850/900/1800/1900 MHz - Quad-band for international compatibility
• Large 2.2" TFT color display
• 64 MB SDRAM/64 MB Flash ROM
• Office™ Mobile - Outlook™/Word™/Excel™/Explorer™

• TI OMAP 850 200MHz processor
• Pocket MSN® (Hotmail®/MSN Messenger)
• Multimedia messaging - send text, pictures and sound
• Downloadable polyphonic/full-audio ringtones, graphics and games
• Stereo audio jack for listening to music

And last but not the least, it has a hump to improve the reception. Wink

So I got a smt5600 a bit over a month ago(so no return) and am now a existing customer under a 2 year contract. If I want to get this phone, anyone know what the cost would be?

Well, it may be available online, but it's not at my local Cingular owned store in San Francisco.

They don't know when it will be coming in stock, but offered to put me on a waiting list.

if you are already in a contract and cant upgrade or you want to buy this phone outright the cost is $399.99 according to my pricesheet here in the store.

they only get what the manager orders, you gotta go there and tell the manager to get on the ball. before a phone is released the manager is given a list of phones that are available or will be available soon and they pick and choose which ones they want at there locations. at least this is how it works in my market. since the phone is already released all they have to do is call their operations manager and put in a special request to have the phone shipped out.

dont wait for them to get it in stock because the phone has a fairly hefty retail value on it so most stores wont even just get them unless their already sold. just go and ask to place a special order. if they dont do that for you theyre not to bright because thats money out of their paycheck Wink

How long do special orders take? Would I be better off ordering it off the Cingular site or try the special order?

I have a i-mate SP5m and don't see any Office Mobile functionality. At Mobius they said this was under development so I doubt that Office Mobile is on this device. Maybe they meant there are ClearVue readers included or something.

Out here in LA the rebate does not show!?!? Is it a limited # of rebates or is it geographically limited? I would consider it for $200, but not the $300 list or $400 w/o contract.

The SP5 is not that much more if I want to stay out of contract and I get wi-fi, plus an unlocked phone, plus the freedom to leave if they irk me too much (priceless Very Happy )

prolly through the website. a special order could take several days but youre waiting on other people to get off their bums and get it done and sometimes people can get lazy. at least online its garunteed to get there quickly and i believe you can order next day shipping Smile

I was surprised about that myself. I forgot to put this icon Confused against that spec. Wonder what it means? As you suggested does it mean ClearVue? But then they have the TM mark against Office Mobile. Confused

Will have to wait till some one gets their hands on this Smartphone.

You wouldn't catch me dead with that phone. I don't think the hump is a big deal. I've seen a lot of flip phones out with similar humps. I had the SMT5600 and found it worthless when it came to typing - anything, be it email, text message, web URLs, etc.

I got a chance to try out Sprints HTC 6700 (with the slide in/out keypad) and was very impressed, plus it has the PPC version of WM5 which undoubtedly has Mobile Office. I'll wait for the 8125 from Cingular which is the same phone, I think. I'll also check out the new Treo 700w when Verizon finally decides to make it available.

For now I'll have to stick out a little longer with my love/hate relationship with my Treo 650. I'm up on the fence right now of whether I want to switch service providers and go CDMA with Verizon and their Treo 700w or stick with GSM and Cingular by going with the 8125. I don't think the 2125 is all that people are making out to be.

That's the tough question. I just signed up with Cingular and got the SMT5600 two weeks ago, and I'm going to exchange it for the 2125. Sure I'd like WiFi and no hump, but hey, I may not get another smartphone for over a year since the prices aren't exactly low. IMO, it's worth the trade up since after 30 days, I'll be stuck with the same phone unless I want to pay a lot more.

I'm not exactly sure of the throughput differences between GPRS and EDGE, but any increase will help when using the smartphone as a modem. Smile

If the Cingular 2125 Cingular comes with WM5 , all the apps for Windows 2003 SE (NewsBreak, Clearvue , etc) will work on the new OS?

Somebody now if is it possible in Outlook to read html e-mail ( or a 3rd party app??)

Thanks

A lot of software vendors already have versions that run on WM5. Some of the old apps MAY work. You'll need to check with each vendor to see.

There is still no way to read HTML email on Smartphone Outlook as far as I know. No third party apps that I know of either. Sad

I think it would make huge difference. EDGE is easily 3-4 times faster than GPRS. Cool

GPRS averages about 30-56Kbp/s (dial up speed), EDGE averages about 110-150Kbp/s (closer to ISDN speeds). Remember that these speeds are kilobits (Kb) not kilobytes (KB)

so really with EDGE speeds youre only really downloading at 10-20K. not exactly as high speed as they say huh? to bad there are no UMTS smartphones released in the states yet Sad

You are right , before buying the smt5600 I've tried the Motorola V557 that has EDGE and the speed wasnt impressive at all, almos the same as the Smt5600, and I think has to do with the signal strenght too, becasue sometimes the Audiovox is really fast.

well for mobile phones EDGE would be fast but for WM smartphones where you can easily download 400k when opening up a page (coolsmartphone.com for example or even SPT where i have never managed to break 300k) its still a tad bit slow.

also in a lot of cities cingulars data service is REALLY slow. im not sure why. sometimes it can take me up to a minute to connect to a website with my cingular line where as with my tmobile line it takes seconds.

my honest opinion is cingulars data networks need a little bit of improvement, hopefully the UMTS service will be in tip top order Smile

Bless FCC for providing us this awesome user manual database. Wink

2125 User Manual I am sure the manual must undergo some updates. Or they may add last minute info as a separate brochure/pull-outs.

To take advantage of the faster download speeds, the browser and the phone's processor also need to contribute.

I know the pIE is slow in 2003 SE. That is why Opera shines. Hopefully WM5.0 pIE renders the page faster.

I don't think it will fit inside the miniSD slot because it is located under the battery on the 2125. Sad

The miniSD card has the following dimension .8" x .8" x .05" (LxWxD) and this card has 1.1 x 0.8 x 0.1.

IE is a lot faster and I imagine it will be the same for the 2125 since it uses the same processor. I live in LA/orange county and edge works great here. I'm just waiting for opera for the pocket pc because I bet it will scream. btw surfing the net on my laptop as a modem is faster then the phone leaving me to believe that the edge is providing data faster then what pocket IE can handle

I am going to try both... although I am not sure what I will get from either. I put in an order over the internet at the Store and the guy I talked to said he would call me if they got any of them in today or tomorrow so I can cancel my online order. Has anybody on a legacy at&t wireless voice plan been able to upgrade to the 2125?

I called the business care(less) line today, and apparently I have to switch to a new Cingular plan to be able to upgrade to this phone.

Is this just typical Cingular screw-age, or does it have something to do with accessing the edge network I wonder...?

the simple answer, at&t sim cards dont work in cingular phones. part of the merger agreement was that at&t reserved the write to use the at&t wireless name in the future to start another wireless company so cingular had to phase out all at&t products which means if you want a phone upgrade you need a cingular phone

Seems like a plausible answer, but I've upgraded since AT&T was acquired by Cingular. Also, business care offered me an "upgrade" to a razr is I wanted. Maybe they are phasing out the dual branding of phones to force people off of legacy aws plans...

To add a bit more colour, I'm switching out of a Blackberry device to a Smartphone due to an employment change.

However, you would think that by Cingular taking out the middle man, Audiovox, the pricing of the phone could be better? How much do you think Audiovox cleared on each phone sold?

However, the upside could be more software/ROM updates as Orange and others have done.

Since there has been so many comments about the antenna cover on the Faraday I would think that once we see some spare SPV C600 parts come available, people will just swap their "humped" antenna for the smaller one as long as it doesn't affect RF performance too much.

Furthermore, I would like to think that someone at spv-developers or xda-developers will attempt to flash the ROM with a Tornado ROM to see if they can activate the 802.11 option. Unless we find out that the Faraday is simply missing the critical hardware required for 802.11b.

On Monday, I called the store (call it store A) where I got my other phones and signed my contract in November. They weren't expecting to get the 2125 until January, but suggested I call a different store (call it store B) in the area since that store often gets new devices first. I did, and they were expecting the 2125 "soon," hopefully this week. I called store B back today, and the manager picked up. She said they still didn't have the 2125, and she couldn't order any until they sold all of the SMT5600s, but that she could put in a custom order for me. However, I told her I was trying to exchange my SMT5600 before Christmas since I signed a contract recently, and she wasn't sure the 2125 would arrive by then. She didn't give up though; she called the manager at store A (whom I had talked to about another issue last night, when she told me she really couldn't order the 2125 for me), and that manager agreed to order the 2125 for me, and I could still exchange my SMT5600 for it even if it came in after my 30-day return window is up. The manager of store B called me back right away and told me this good news. Smile So hopefully I'll have the 2125 before I return to college in January.

Kudos to the Cingular store managers in Columbus. Very Happy

I don't know about if the MediaNet unlimieted qualifies - it would be great if it did because the unlimited Data package is $44.99!! After two months with that rate and the $36 activation fee - you already have used up the rebate. I think I'm paying $19.99 for my current MediaWorks package and I don't like the idea of paying more per month.

You only need MediaNET to qualify for the rebate, the $49.99 is the PDA connect package but since your using a phone and not a treo or pocketpc youre in the clear Smile

I too went through the hassels of Cingular customer service. I was migrating from ATT and having issues with the website and getting a different answer from each employee. Finally yesterday afternoon I spoke with someone who is a smartphone fan. He hooked me up and Fedex was at my door this afternoon.
I have been using the SMT5600 for over a year and have been very happy, except for the dust under the display. Sad
The 2125 display is awesome!! Even with the protective sheet on, it blows away the 5600.
There is a case and stereo headphones in the box.
So yes the 2125 is available if you get through the Cingular customer service maze!!!

Well, I just spent about 25 minutes on the phone with Cingular ordering the Cingular 2125 - of course they didn't understand me when I told them the BRAND was Cingular! Wink

I was told by the sales woman that the phones didn't show as being "in stock" - however, they did show that 1,600 units were due to the warehouse - yesterday!

Well, out of pocket the phone cost me about $314.xx which includes the "3-5 day" shipping.

With any luck I will receive the phone early next week.

Has anyone else had any luck with ordering 2125?

Well, my phone shipped today and FedEx reports that it will get delivered this Monday!

I'm not going to br the first to have the phone on this forum, but I'll be the first of my friends to get one. Wink

yes. unfortunatly if you want a new cingular phone at the discounted activation price you have to move off your old blue plan onto an orange plan. it might seem like a hassel but unless you are on the unlimited att plan there really shouldnt be a problem since the new orange plans are almost as good as the old blue ones and in some cases better (m2m, rollover, no romaing, no long distance charges, etc)

Okay, can someone explain the above screen shot.

I just remembered that I can get employee discount. So I decided to check the price. Guess what. The 2125 costs $679.99. Shocked Of course I do get the 40% employee discount, which brings the price down by $272.00. And a special Web discount, that adds another $138 discount. Which means I can get this Smartphone for $269.99. Evil or Very Mad Not to forget I still have to sign a 2 year contract. Twisted Evil

Do these people know what they are doing. I can get the Smartphone for $199 with a 2 year contract at the regular pricing. Isn't employee pricing supposed to be lower?

I like the way Cingular jacked up the price and then brought it down. But it is still not low or equal to the regular price. Evil or Very Mad Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

My 2125 was scheduled to arrive on Monday via next day standard air and arrived today - 2 days early!

I'm so excited!!!!

I'm charging and syncing my phone as I write this and I love how there is a Media (Player) sync option in ActiveSync 4.1 when you have a 2005 device attached.

Yummy, yummy - this phone is beautiful and the slate gray is much nicer than the black color on the 5600.

The one reason why I am thinking of getting the 2125. The T-Mobile SDA may have Wi-Fi, but I think 2125 has better looks. Smile [Plus I can better discount on Cingular.]

If I need the Wi-Fi, I should get the i-mate SP5 (the black one). Smile

I am begining to hate the Cingular Customer Service already. Evil or Very Mad I haven't even signed up.

The online price seems to be weird (read over-priced). And seems like all the local stores do not have any plans to carry the Smartphone (because it is costly+slow mover) and are not willing to help me order one either. Sad

If the Cingular salesperson didn't tell you, you can track your order online (after about 24 hours).

Log into your Cingular account, click on Service from the top menu (right side) and then click on Order Status from the "Quick List" on the left column.

Once I discovered that, I was checking every couple of hours! Wink

It sees my 512MB mini-SD card and I have a replacement 1GB coming in tomorrow.

I've had NO issues with the memory card.

I wondered the same thing when I was looking at the "discounted" price that shows up under the FAN discount. I called the premier customer service and their explained the phone was not eligible for the $100 rebate, but you do get another $25 off at checkout, the activation fee is waived, and free shipping which shrinks the gap between the two. If a store near you has it, you can go in and get the phone for the cheaper price and the discounted service. If you don't have a store that's carrying the phone, you can purchase the phone and service through the regular internet and then call 1-866-355-8923 once your account is set up and let them know you are eligible for the FAN discount. They will ask you a couple questions to verify and then associate the discount with your account which means you should be receiving the discounted rate on your monthly statement. End result, jump through a few hoops and you can save a little cash.

In any case I think T-mo just lost me - no aggressive direction and the price points in plans now are very similar so, to Cing or Verz I go...

Kris,
I hope you went to the FAN website. They knocked another $100 off the price if you get a $39.99 or higher voice plan and $19.99 or higher data plan. Total with all the discounts for my phone I just ordered came to $144.99.

Post subject: Gotta love that Cingular staff
After reading several posts here about how Cingular staff were clueless about the 2125, I thought I'd try it myself. I went to a nearby Cingular company store (not an independent) and asked to see it. The first guy looked at me like I had two heads. He called a more senior person who also had not heard of it and said Cingular doesn't sell phones with its own name. Yada Yada Yada. I told them to check their own website (and this one too for that matter) where the phone is clearly listed and they said they couldn't find it. (The first guy scrolled through the phones on the Cingular site so fast they appeared a blur from my angle.) By this time, I was beginning to rethink my generally positive feelings about Cingular, when the more senior guy had a brainstorm. He said, I wonder if you're referring to the new Audiovox. He reaches to a spot behind the counter not a foot from where I was standing and hands me a demo model of the Cingular 2125. I told him to look at the phone carefully and he was shocked. Of course, as Thoughts readers know, the phone does not say Audiovox on it anywhere, but only Cingular 2125. He muttered about not knowing why Cingular was branding its own phones now, and quickly found another customer to attend to.

Meantime I took the model in hand. It was not a working model, but I liked the size and feel and the screen size is very nice. The joystick seemed loose on this sample and because it wasn't a working model, I couldn't tell if it was easy to use for navigation.

The hump was no big deal to me, so I think I am going to give it a try. I am in the market for something with more reliable PIM software than the RAZR offers. (I like the RAZR as a phone, but the contact and calendar sync software is awful.) I was interested in the Treo but I don't want to swtich to Verizon, so I think I'll give the reasonably priced 2125 a try- hump and all.

Don't you love it when you go to the store and know more than the salepeople. Rolling Eyes And people complain that stores are not doing well and people are shopping online. Rolling Eyes

Cingular should thank its stars for having a coverage better than T-Mobile and plan prices lower than Verizon (cooler phones than Verizon too). Otherwise no one would even walk into there stores or online site.
