Frequently, there are some advanced customizations to your Smartphone that can only be done by editing the registry. The registry is a database of configuration information that determines how the phone runs, images that are displayed, sounds that go off, et cetera. Many of these things are configurable using the "Settings" screen on your Smartphone. That is definitely the preferred way of doing things.

There are times, though, when you just need to get under the hood. Smartphones do not have a built-in program to make changes in the registry, so you need a registry editor. PHM RegEdit is a popular tool that has been around for Pocket PC, H/PC, and now Smartphone. PHM RegEdit allows you to explore the phone's registry, and make changes where appropriate.

Editing the registry is not for everyone. Mistakes made while editing the registry can turn your Smartphone into a pretty paperweight, so think twice before jumping in and making changes. Also, make sure you backup your Smartphone before making any changes in the registry.
