Hi,
I just picked up an 8390 to play with (I use and SPV e200 most of the time). Before I ordered it, I did not realize that some of the apps (like MMS) are in Chinese. Does anybody know if I can either get an English ROM for the phone or at least English versions of some of the pre-installed software?

[[Ooooh, and as a follow up question, how do I application unlock the !@#%#$@# thing?]]
Update:
Just figured this one out--MITAC offers an unlock service at:

There is some info on MsMobilenews.com about unlocking your Mitac. I don't recall if it's the 8390 or not. But it seems like you've found the info you're looking for anyway.

I've had an 8390 for months, now, and I've found no evidence of an English MMS application or any ROM different than what's in the phone.
It's a great device, but get used to nobody knowing anything about it or making additional stuff for it. You're really on your own with the 8390, but it's been rewarding so far.

when I was doing my review of the 8390, this is what I was told about the current batch of online retailers selling the 8390 in North America:
Quote: |
Anyone selling it in North America at this time is opening themselves up to a law suit. On the first part, the device has no North American type approval so as a health and safety concern if there are any problems the sellers are at risk. Secondly, all the devices being brought into the country are being smuggled in because customs would not allow them to be bought into the country for resale.
Apart from that, there is no support, no warranty repair and no way to get the rom upgrades for these devices at this time. We will ensure that any product we bring in will be fully supported from warranty, to software upgrades to Type Approval. |
