Basic Image Editing with WM5

Most people are unaware that there are some handy image editing tools built into Windows Mobile 5. While they are basic they can help make up for some of the sub-par pictures that are taken with your 1.3MP camera. The features we will be covering will be the rotate, crop and auto correct features.

This tutorial is built around the Cingular 2125. I have not tested it on other WM5 phones but I have heard from several other people that these features exist on other WM5 phones as well (T-Mobile SDA, SP5(m), etc.)

Accessing these features is actually really easy, if you know where they are located. All of these features will be accessed through the "Pictures & Videos" application. Taking a look at figure 1 you will see we will be starting off from the homescreen.

From the homescreen, press the left soft-key button to access your device's "Start Menu". Depending on how you set your device up, or which WM5 device you have, your grid layout might look a bit different. Either way we will be entering the "Pictures & Videos" application as shown in figure 2.

Now we will try to find a picture to edit. For this tutorial I choose a random image of a peacock that I took at the zoo the other day. Select the image and hit the right soft-key button to access the "Menu" as shown in figures 3, 4 and 5.

Now scroll down and choose "Edit" or hit the number 5 on the keypad.

You will now be presented with a different screen. If you notice the background color on this screen is different. Besides that everything else should look exactly the same. Once again hit the right soft-key button to access the "Menu" menu. You will notice now there will be some completely different options.

The three basic image editing options are:

Rotate
Lets you rotate your images. Pretty self explanatory Wink

Crop
Lets you crop out sections of images. Do you have a bad habit of getting your finger caught in the lens? Well this option is for you Wink

Auto Correct
Let’s face it. While we do have 1.3MP cameras on our WM5 phones... they really don't produce the best color quality in low lighted areas. In fact a lot of times I find if I don’t have the absolute perfect lighting my pictures tend to come out a little orange. Well selecting this option will perform an auto correct of the color, just as the name implies. Pretty handy but I honestly feel they should include an option in the image menu to perform this automatically after taking a picture. Smile

Well there you have it. Nothing to spectacular but they are handy features non-the-less. Enjoy!

Nicely done! Smile I had never even looked at those features. I'm going to front page this.

Wow, yet another blast from the past. It's always nice to see someone discovering new things on Smartphone, especially when it's features that were so agonizing to get spec'ed Smile

I remember fondly going to spec reviews with the PM that designed the camera app, and working with her to figure out how exactly to crop on a device with no stylus, and bickering endlessly about which image editing features were key to include. Ah, those were the days.
