LogMeIn Adds Remote Administration for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=7258

"LogMeIn, Inc. has announced a new software that enables customer care representatives at wireless carriers, IT support organizations and corporate IT departments to quickly and securely access and remote control smartphones to diagnose and fix problems or even train end users. LogMeIn Rescue Mobile, the newest software-as-a-service (SaaS) in LogMeIn's growing family of IT support services, is the first web-based service that enables technicians to remotely access and take control of a smartphone and optionally the connected PC - simultaneously. Technicians have a replica of the smartphone on their computer screen and can push buttons, manipulate the screen and control the device as if it were in their own hands."

I've been using LogMeIn for just over a year now and I've been very pleased with the service. Adding mobility into the mix is a great next step and an addition that I am really looking forward to. It would make a great addition to the existing mobile management tools built into Exchange. Unfortunately, I can't find any mention of this on the LogMeIn site. :( I'll be watching and post more details when I find them.

If you haven't played with eXtreme Agenda you really should check out all it has to offer. It's more than just Calendaring stuff. There's also a Contacts replacement, Tasks, Secure Wallet, and Notes functionality.

This latest version is a free upgrade for existing customers. If you don't already have a copy, you can download a trial version or purchase a copy for the current sale price of $19.95 (until April 10th) at our affiliate store.

NewsGator Adds Support for Motorola Good Enabled Devices

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:30 AM

http://www.newsgator.com/news/archive.aspx?post=115

"Motorola, Inc. announced today that it has signed an agreement with NewsGator Technologies, Inc., the leading RSS platform company, to mobilize RSS content for enterprises. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola will extend NewsGator-aggregated RSS content from behind the firewall to mobile users on a broad range of devices, including the Motorola Q, Samsung BlackJack, the Palm Treo family and many other standards-based smartphones. This announcement follows Motorola's recently completed acquisition of Good Technologies. Motorola's Good Technology Group, which was formed upon the closing of the transaction, will work closely with NewsGator to implement the agreement and make NewsGator's technology available through its secure, managed service."

User submitted image

So the long and short of this is that NewsGator Mobile will support Good Technology. So you'll be able to access RSS feeds on your mobile device even if you are blocked by operators firewall. It's a pretty smart idea, and I hope that NewsGator doesn't stop with Good. I would like to see more services offered over Microsofts Exchange ActiveSync too. NewsGator has a great vision, and they sure seem to be working hard at making sure you can get your RSS everywhere. :)

Sprint Adds the Q to its Device Lineup

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://sev.prnewswire.com/telecommunications/20070104/CGTH02504012007-1.html

"Slim and stylish, the MOTO Q offered from Sprint operates on the Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Platform with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack and gives customers easy access to mobile email, Web, calendar, music, video and phone functionality in one pocket-sized device."

It looks like we are still only looking at a CDMA Q. The news says it will be released in the business channel later this month and to the general consumer market in mid February. OK great, so where is the GSM Q?

Skype Adds Windows Mobile Smartphone Support

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 03:30 PM

http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/download_beta.html

Skype has just released version 2.2 Beta which adds support for Windows Mobile Smartphones. The mobile version of Skype is no longer limited to the world of touch screen devices. If you're a Skype user and interested in using it from your phone, then you'll want to check this out. On the down side, the install requires 12MB free on your phone, or 6MB if you install to the storage card. Don't ask me what the difference is, because I have no idea. It goes without saying, but... A high speed wireless connection is recommended. It may work without one, but I wouldn't expect to hear a pin drop. ;) If you're not using a WiFi connection, then you'll want to have an unlimited data plan or lots of cash to blow.

I have zero contacts on Skype. So I would be interested to hear how you guys make out with this on the Smartphone platform.

Handmark Adds SMS Download Support

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.handmark.com/company/news.php?id=144

"consumers can text express to 78247 (QTAGS) and immediately receive a reply text with a one-click download link for the Handmark flagship mobile software, Pocket Express. Pocket Express wireless service delivers free news, sports, and weather, plus other subscription services including stock quotes, street maps and turn-by-turn directions, movie reviews and show times, 411 directory search, and more. Pocket Express is available on BlackBerry, Palm Treo, motorola Q and other Windows Mobile wireless handhelds"

This is an interesting and fresh approach to getting the an application on your device. It would be much easier to send a SMS and get a download link in return, than it would be to fire up IE Mobile and navigate to a website, then search for the application and eventually download it. I hope we see more of this type of thinking. :)

Vito CopyPaste Adds Copy & Paste Functionality to Your Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:30 AM

http://vitotechnology.com/en/products/copypaste.html

"System utility that greatly simplifies managing your Smartphone. CopyPaste does exactly what its name says in any editable field edit box. Copy or cut the info from an edit box and paste it to another one. You can also select the necessary part of the edit box contents for copying or cutting to another editable field. CopyPaste saves your time and ink."

User submitted image

Vito has just released a new freeware application - CopyPaste. As you might guess, it allows you to copy and paste information on your Smartphone. This is one of those features that everyone has been asking for and can't believe that it's not a standard part of the OS. Well, you don't have to run out and buy a third party solution any longer. Vito's CopyPaste program is free for everyone to enjoy.

A word of advice for those going to try this out. There is no installer for Vito CopyPaste. Instead, just copy the EXE to your phone (\Storage Card\Program Files\Vito\CopyPaste\VitoCopyPaste.exe) and then using your phones file explorer, create a shortcut in the Start Menu. (\Windows\Start Menu\Accessories) Then you can create a speed dial entry for it. :D

Traffic Vizzion Adds Yahoo! Maps

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.vizzion.com/

"How many times have you found yourself stuck in a traffic jam, construction zone, or even a blizzard, and wished you could have seen the road conditions up ahead before you got there? Radio reports and roadside signs are all well and good, but all too often youre already caught up in a problem before you hear about it. Traffic Vizzion (pronounced vision) makes it possible to keep an eye on the road ahead by bringing live images from thousands of traffic cameras located across North America and the UK to your cell phone or Pocket PC."

User submitted image

We have posted on this application before. Now Yahoo! Maps have been added. This is subscription based and the service is 39USD per year. There is also a 2 week trial. Sadly, the Q is not yet supported.

Microsoft Adds a File Explorer and New Start Menu Navigation to its Smartphone OS

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3223

"With the latest Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.3 release for Smartphones, Microsoft added some useful features to its Smartphone platform, including a file explorer and a slightly modified Start menu. Microsoft always uses these AKU releases to either fix bugs or to add new features and while most stuff and changes are under the hood, these two new features can be seen and used by the users and both adds more convenience to the Smartphone use."

One of the things I like about my Q is being able to scroll through all the programs in the start grid view. Until now you had to "more" your way through it on all the other Smartphones. Some enhancements to the built in file explorer are also included. The catch here of course is will you be able get your hands on this latest AKU. Here is a list of them so you can see where you are. :)

Cingular Triples Its Second-Quarter Profit And Adds 1.5 Million To Subscriber Base

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 10:36 AM

http://mobileanalystwatch.blogspot.com/2006/07/cingular-triples-its-second-quarter.html

"Investor's Business Daily reports that "Cingular Wireless tripled its second-quarter profit to $540 million as customer disconnects fell to an all-time low. According to the article, Cingular earned $540 million last quarter, up from $147 million in the year-earlier quarter. The carrier added '1.5 million subscribers, raising its customer count to 57.3 million. Verizon Wireless has 53 million customers.'"

User submitted image

1.5 million new subscribers! It doesn't sound like a lot when you compare it to the 57.3 million total subscribers but 1.5 million is a accomplishment in its own right. Even if every single person that lives in Portland and Seattle, the two big cities here in the Pacific NW, go out and buy a Cingular handset you would still be about 400,000 subscribers shy of 1.5 million. As Cingular starts lighting up new UMTS/HSDPA towers in more major metropolitan areas I would expect to see these numbers skyrocket even higher!

AvantGo Adds RSS Support

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:00 PM

http://corp.avantgo.com/press_releases/avantgo_rss.html

"iAnywhere today announced the general availability of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) features for its popular AvantGo mobile Internet service. With AvantGo for RSS, users can easily view mobile RSS subscriptions for free. AvantGo users can add any RSS feed to their account, without installing additional software, and then synchronize using a wireless or desktop Internet connection to receive the feed items in a format optimized for their device."

This is great news for any AvantGo users. It took them a long time to release AvantGo for the Smartphone, but it looks like they stepped up the pace a little when it came time for adding RSS support. For me, if the RSS feeds don't sync with my desktop reader then there is no point in using it - which rules out this product for my needs. So, how many of you still use AvantGo? And of those of you that do; Are you running it on your Smartphone?

T-Mobile Adds 1.4 Million New Subscribers in Q4

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.unstrung.com/document.asp?doc_id=89983&WT.svl=news2_1

"Strong customer growth buoyed T-Mobile USA , the smallest of the top four mobile telephony providers in the U.S., and helped parent company Deutsche Telekom AG weather a 43 percent drop in net profits, the company reported today. The most consumer-focused of the top four American cellular companies, T-Mobile USA added about 1.4 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2005, up from 1.06 million in the previous quarter and 1.02 million added in the same period in 2004. For the year, T-Mobile added 4.4 million total customers in 2005, compared to 4.2 million the year before."

User submitted image

I like the part where they state that T-Mobile is the "most consumer-focused" carrier. 1.4 Million new subscribers is good news, but it's also good to get recognition as the most consumer focused carrier. Way to go T-Mo! :way to go:

Traffic Vizzion will automatically show roadside cameras near your current location, or just ahead of you, so you can adjust your travel route based on realtime traffic conditions before you get stuck in another traffic jam. We posted about Traffic Vizzion a couple months ago, and since then Vizzion has added more locations - the most recent additions include 11 cities in the UK. (And yes, there are already numerous North American locations to pick from.)

Geekzone Adds Review Links to Smart Device Database

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=5433

"The biggest problem these days is that a couple of manufacturers produce these devices, but each distributor or mobile operator will sell them with their own brand and name. Thus, it is very hard for consumers to find the right information - even if the information is available sometimes the name is not well known. The tool allows users to list all devices in the database, or filter by manufacturer, model, brand or name. What I've been doing behind the scenes, and it is now live, is a collection of links to reviews on each device."

Mauricio has taken a great resource and made it even better by adding links to the various different reviews. You can check out all the different products and reviews here.

C64 Emulator adds Windows Mobile 2002 Support

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.christian-schlatter.de

Does everyone remember the Commodore 64 emulator that we posted on a while back called PocketHobbit? If you've never heard of this before, now you know. ;) If you were interested in using it, but couldn't because of your Windows Mobile 2002 based smartphone, then you are in luck. Christian has just sent word that he has added support for 2002 based Smartphones. How great is that!

You can get more information, and even download a copy from Christian's wbesite. I guess the only real hurdle now is QVGA support.

Kaspersky Adds Smartphone Support to Mobile Anti-Virus Tool

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2005/0310cebit-kas.html

"The company is also offering Anti-Virus for PDAs, an update of a previous product that now protects Pocket PC devices when files are being copied from another device. It can also be used on smart phones running Microsofts Smartphone 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003 software. The release of Kaspersky's mobile security products is timely given that the first virus that spreads via Mobile Messaging Service (MMS) on Symbian-based smart phones was detected earlier this week, said Andrey Nikishin, head of market research and strategic development at Kaspersky. "Smart phones only represent 1% of the market now, but in two years it could be 50%, so the potential for danger is high," Nikishin said."

It's starting to get really crowded in the Anti-Virus arena, and Windows Mobile Smartphone has yet to see a true virus. I guess it's always better to be prepared. Lets just hope we never need to use it.
