Windows Mobile Facebook Application Released by Microsoft

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Pocket PC Software" @ 02:24 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...s/facebook.mspx

"New from Windows Mobile: a Facebook application for your phone! Download the new Facebook application for Windows Mobile and: Send messages to any of the people in your Friends list; Take pictures and videos on your phone, then upload them right to Facebook; Send messages or call people in your Friends list; Manage your profile and post anytime, anywhere. Keep up with the latest news and posts with Facebook on your phone. Now your status updates can be up-to-the moment accounts of what you're doing. Photos and videos are about as close to live-action as you can get. Show your friends what you're up to, while you're out and about. Connecting and sharing on Facebook just got a lot livelier!"

In typical fashion, this had been leaked elsewhere previously, but now it's official: the release version of the software is public and available for immediate download. What I find most interesting about this is that it's a Facebook application developed and released by Microsoft. On the iPhone, Facebook developed their own app for it. On Windows Mobile, Microsoft had to do it. That doesn't say much for what Facebook thinks of the Windows Mobile platform, now does it? Looks like RIM developed their own app for the Blackberry though, so this isn't without precedent. Guess the people at Facebook just love their iPhones.

The app will work on all Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 smartphones, both Professional and Standard - sorry all you Windows Mobile 5 owners. You can grab a mobile download here if you wish. I haven't taken it for a spin yet, but will shortly. Let me know what you think of it!

Microsoft to Charge Developers a Submission Token/Fee Per App Update?

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Talk" @ 06:00 AM

"On a related note, the presentation confirmed that the new Windows Marketplace for Mobile will apply application updates directly on the device. However it also appears application updates will require developers to resubmit their application for approval which would then cost a submission token or fee and take time to process."

Allow me to place Long Zheng's words (quoted above) into context. When Microsoft unveiled the Windows Marketplace for Mobile a week ago, it outlined details pertaining to program enrollment and the application submission process. To join the program, developers pay an annual registration fee of $99. That fee includes five application submissions per year. When a developer consumes all five submission tokens in a given year, each additional application submission within the same year costs $99, whether it's a free or paid application.

Now, this probably wouldn't restrict the average developer too much, as he or she is unlikely to release five new applications in a given year. However, a real problem emerges once these submission tokens are applied to application updates as well as new applications, which is actually the case, if Long's words speak the truth. It's not uncommon for developers, especially those who actively respond to customer feedback, to release more than five application updates in a given year. But who can blame a developer for being discouraged when they're being slapped with a $99 fee per update after the fifth update?

New FindMe Location Sharing Service Keeps Friends Connected using Smartphones and Facebook

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 01:37 PM

http://electricpocket.com/aboutus/p...s/pr080318.html

"Electric Pocket, developer of mobile media and media applications for Smartphones, today introduces FindMe for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices. FindMe enables users, their friends, family and colleagues to share their current locations automatically and securely through their BlackBerry or Windows Mobile Smartphones without needing GPS. FindMe offers the opportunity to “tag” commonly visited locations, such as home, office, soccer field or favorite bars and restaurants, and post those locations on their Facebook profiles."

This is probably one of the coolest applications I have seen come out in a while. There really isn't much to say on it as the program itself is pretty basic. In a nutshell, what you do is install a tiny application on your Windows Mobile device. This application grabs information about the cell tower that you are connected to and allows you to assign a tag to that location. Then the application uploads your current location to Facebook which in turn allows all of your friends to see where you are. The only downside of this application that I can see is it will make a bit harder to hide from those individuals that you do not want to hang out with.

If you're a Facebook user then I recommend giving FindMe a download to play around with this simple, yet fun, program.

How to (Not) Write an Especially Precarious Application on .NET Compact Framework

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 07:30 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/andrewarnottms/archive/2007/07/02/how-to-write-an-especially-precarious-app-on-net-compact-framework.aspx

"As the .NET Compact Framework developers work to add features, fix bugs, and refactor code, we often have to determine whether a given change could break existing customer code. The ideal is that NetCF 3.5 will run all apps that ran on NetCF 2.0 and 1.0. We run hundreds of apps and many, many tests before shipping each product to check backward compatibility. The .NET Framework (both desktop and CF) makes heavy use of internal classes to allow us the freedom to change the internals of the framework without breaking customer code. But there are still ways that customers can write apps that may break on future versions."

A must read for every .NET Framework application developer. Andrew Arnott is providing tips that will help the developers write code that will work well with the current and future versions of the .NET Compact Framework. In case you are not familiar with .NET CF, then you should check out the Getting Started guide on MSDN, and these tutorials.

How To Make That Application Take Full Advantage of Your QVGA Screen

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=89167#89167

"If you have a QVGA Smartphone like the HTC Vox / s710, you know well enough that most existing games and other graphics-based Smartphone apps (Windows Mobile 6 Standard) out there only use a postage-stamp sized screen area. An example of this is PDAMill s Flux Challenge , which, being designed for the traditional low-res (176*220) Smartphone resolution, only uses part of the available QVGA screen estate"

Menneisyys has posted a very helpful tip in our forums and I wanted to make sure that all of our readers got the news on this one. If you have any games or applications that don't run full screen on your QVGA Smartphone, then you might want to try out the solution Menneisyys has shared with us. There's a number of steps, but the end result is worth it, in my opinion.

Check out the original thread for more details and further discussion on this handy tip. :)

RIM Announces BlackBerry Application Suite for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3781&catid=10&catid=10

"Not sure why someone want to run any other BlackBerry applications than BlackBerry connect on Windows Mobile but in any case, Research In Motion (RIM) today announced plans to expand its support for Windows Mobile-based devices with a new software application suite that will enable devices from third-party manufacturers to benefit from the popular BlackBerry software applications and services. RIM plans to begin offering the new software application suite later this year for select devices based on Windows Mobile 6 (only). Once installed, the software will provide users with a virtual BlackBerry application experience, including support for BlackBerry E-Mail, phone, calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, instant messaging and other applications developed for the BlackBerry platform."

Well now, this is an interesting move by RIM. Could they be concerned about losing market share to Windows Mobile? Or maybe they feel that giving people the ability to run BlackBerry application on a Windows Mobile device will help sell more BlackBerry's? As Arne said, I can see using BlackBerry connect but why would I want to run the other application when I already have those in my Windows Mobile device? Anyone BlackBerry users here that would like to explain that to me? Is there something special that we're missing?

You can read the full press release over on RIM's web site

Marvell to Purchase Intel's Communications and Application Processor Business for $600 Million

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 05:05 AM

http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20060627corp.htm

"Marvell Technology Group, Ltd. and Intel Corporation today announced that they have signed an agreement for Intel to sell its communications and application processor business to Marvell for a purchase price of $600 million plus the assumption by Marvell of certain liabilities. The planned sale will give Marvell a strong presence in the growing market segment for processors used in smart handheld devices. ... Intels communications and application processor business develops and sells processors for handheld devices including smart phones and personal digital assistants. The business processors, based on Intel XScale technology, include the Intel PXA9xx communications processor, codenamed Hermon, which powers Research in Motions (RIM) Blackberry* 8700 device. The Intel PXA27x applications processor, codenamed Bulverde, is used in the Palm Treo* smart phone, the Motorola Q* and other devices."

User submitted image

Am I the only one who is surprised by Intel's decision to sell its mobile/cellular application processor division? :? Intel had made inroads into the PDA market, but the smart phone market was giving the company a cold shoulder. In spite of the slow growth, given the size of the mobile phone market and the fact that this market is still growing, I am surprised that Intel decided to bail out of this lucrative market. The Mitac Mio series, the Sierra Voq, the Samsung i600/i300 and the recently launched Moto Q are among the Windows Mobile Smartphones that use Intel processors.

Mobile Application Sales - A Different View

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 05:15 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/melsam/archive/2006/06/16/634692.aspx

"Michael Mace has written an interesting article on why mobile application sales are dropping. As the former Chief Competitive Officer and VP of Product Planning at Palm, Michael certainly knows a lot about the mobile device ecosystem. While I agree with his premise that mobile application sales have dropped off in recent years, I'd like to share my own perspective on why this is happening. As a former Windows Mobile ISV, I have firsthand experience with what Michael describes."

Mel Sampat has posted his comments on the recent article by Michael Mace. We've already talked about this article here on Smartphone Thoughts but I think it's worth highlighting Mel's thoughts on this. After all, Mel certainly knows a thing or two about the Windows Mobile ISV arena.

Why Are Mobile Application Sales Dropping?

Posted by Jerry Raia in "THOUGHT" @ 08:00 PM

http://mobileopportunity.blogspot.com/2006/06/why-are-mobile-application-sales.html

"The e-mail was from the CEO of a prominent mobile app developer, a company you've heard of if you're familiar with the mobile space. He makes software for a broad range of mobile devices Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian, etc. He told me that his overall application sales are disturbing...Since then I've talked with a number of mobile developers, and heard eerily similar stories. Sales are stagnant to down, and the problem's not just focused on one OS."

This article is a bit long but worth the time to read it. Basically it discuses how mobile application sales are flat or on the decline. The point was made that most new device sales on the MS side were to people (like a lot of us here) that already have devices. In other words not many new users. Since we already have applications we don't buy them again. Give this a read and post your thoughts.

Mel Sampat on Windows Mobile Application Compatibility

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 11:30 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/melsam/

"My goal is to make this blog a resource that developers can turn to for improving the overall quality of their Windows Mobile applications. The focus will be on application compatibility (app compat) and usability. ... To keep things interesting, I'll run a "spot the bug" contest once a week beginning early next week. A short code snippet or downloadable application will be posted. It will include an intentional "bug". Readers will have 3 days to submit what they think the problem is. I will post the solution, an explanation of why this was a bug, and names of the top 3 winners on the 4th day. "Bugs" will not be syntax/logic errors or generic memory leaks. Instead, they will relate to things that can cause app compat or usability issues over the long term. Remember - the goal is not to teach you programming, but how you can avoid Windows Mobile-specific issues."

Mel Sampat is Program Manager in the Mobile & Embedded Devices division at Microsoft, and is responsible for improving the developer experience and maximizing application compatibility for current and future versions of Windows Mobile. If you are a Windows Mobile developer then you should check out his blog for tips and in case you think are a hot-shot programmer then how about attempting his weekly "Spot the Bug" contest. :-)

Application Verifier for Windows Mobile 5

Posted by Mike Temporale in "DEVELOPER" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d275348a-d937-4d88-ae25-28702c78748d&displaylang=en

"The Application Verifier tool assesses the stability of an application and detects common programming mistakes. The tool can detect and pinpoint memory leaks, handle leaks, and leaks in graphics device interface (GDI) objects. The tool can also detect some forms of heap corruption. Application Verifier attaches to an application and performs tests while the application runs. With the tool, you may be able to diagnose subtle problems with an application that would otherwise be difficult to diagnose on Microsoft Windows CE."

Ok, so it's not something that most of you would care to know about. But it is important to make sure the developers are aware of it's existence and tap into it's power. For the good of the whole Windows Mobile community.
