"Wouldn't it be super cool if the Silverlight apps you built for the desktop could run on Millions of Mobile Devices? If you have been building Silverlight applications and are wondering how to extend them to mobile devices, then this webcast is the one to watch. In this webcast you will not only learn how to extend your existing Silverlight 2 applications to work on Windows Mobile, but also learn how to build rich mobile Silverlight apps that play media, handle simple gestures, have cool animations, and enable web services."

Public availability of Silverlight for Mobile isn't expected until early next year, but if you want a head-start on extending your existing Silverlight apps to mobile devices, then this PDC session is worth a look. And, if you want more, Amit Chopra offers an overview of each of the demos.

A Fresh Start...

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Talk" @ 05:00 AM

As many of you know, a few weeks ago I received a brand new Motorola Q9h. Since that time I have been so busy with work as well as my review of the handset... and saying farewell to my favorite MiniDV video camera which had a tragic death during the filming of my review (which will now be done in written format), that I have not really had a chance to sit done and do the dreaded ritualistic ceremony of installing all of my favorite applications on my new toy. Since I am starting from scratch, I thought it would be a good idea to see what applications the readers of this site use on a daily basis, or could not live without. I'm always up for trying something new so if there are any suggestions that you guys and gals have, I would love to hear them!

Facebook is Consuming My Soul

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Talk" @ 06:39 PM

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4705794657

For the past few weeks a few of the editors here at Smartphone Thoughts have managed to get ourselves tangled into the Internet's newest time consuming addiction better known as Facebook. A few days ago, after forcing myself away from the dreaded Pirates game, one of the many applications available on Facebook, I decided that I would start putting the online service to use and created a Smartphone Thoughts group. I did this for two reasons:

  1. All of the other mobile sites were doing it and I felt left out.
  2. I figured there were at least a few of our readers using Facebook and this would be a perfect opportunity to connect more with our readers.

So if you find yourself stuck on Facebook and want more friends, or you need new people to bomb on the addicting Pirates game, feel free to join our group and say "hello"

My Favorite Pocket PC Applications on The Smartphone - Today Ilium

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:13 PM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3861

"Let's continue with the series of articles of the use of my favorite Windows Mobile Pocket PC applications on the Windows Mobile Smartphone. Today I will write about Ilium Software's NewsBreak, another application by Ilium that made my life so easy on the Pocket PC, and now made me happier when I saw it exists for the Smartphone as well. NewsBreak is an RSS feed reader. For the users that are not acquainted with RSS, here is a short explanation: many websites offer the ability to syndicate the content of the site as an RSS feed. RSS is a standard XML format (actually there are some 3 different RSS standards)..."

User submitted image

Helio Diamant, Microsoft MVP for Windows Mobile, walks us through using Ilium Software's NewsBreak for Windows Mobile Standard. You know, I have to be honest with you guys, I'm not a huge fan of RSS on mobile devices. I used to be a huge fan but the truth is, there is just to much stuff to read! I used to spend around one hour each day reading the news on my handset until one day I got a new work computer with two huge 20 inch LCD monitors. After reading the news from all of my favorite sites on these two screens, there was no way I could back to reading all of my daily news on my handset!

Now if I started traveling again, chances are that my Samsung Blackjack would most likely be my primary connection to the outside world. In a situation like this, I don't think I could use any other RSS reader besides NewsBreak. If you haven't checked it out then I highly suggest doing so. You can try a 30-day evaluation copy of the software, which can be downloaded from the Ilium Software website, or you can purchase NewsBreak for $7.95 from our affiliate store! :)

ClintonFitch.com Releases Top 25 List of Applications for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.clintonfitch.com/top25/default.asp

"At the beginning of 2007 Clinton Fitch (Dot) Com! launched its Top 25 List for applications and games that every Windows Mobile Pocket PC user should consider. Today we have expanded that list to include Windows Mobile Smartphones! Like the Pocket PC list, the Smartphone list is divided into categories with our recommendations listed in each category."

User submitted image

Clinton Fitch has a pretty good grasp on what's hot and what's not. He's done a load of software reviews over the years. So his list of Top 25 applications is certainly something that demands a little attention. Personally, I agree with 100% of his list. All the applications he's listed, I have used at one point or another and all of them are top notch, in my opinion. Check out his list and let us know what you think.

Run Your Palm OS Applications on Windows Mobile Smartphone Using StyleTap

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:30 AM

http://blogs.styletap.com/styletapnews/2007/01/styletap-platform-for-windows.html

"StyleTap Inc., a leading innovator in software platforms for PDAs and smartphones, today announced that the preview version of StyleTap Platform for Windows Smartphone is now available. StyleTap Platform enables the world's largest base of mobile applications the estimated 30,000 applications written to run on Palm OS to run on Windows Smartphones, including the new Motorola Moto Q, the T-Mobile Dash and the Samsung Blackjack. These smartphones have experienced very strong sales growth since their introduction last year. However, because they have novel display formats and lack the touchscreens found on traditional Pocket PC devices, relatively little application software is available for these new devices."

User submitted image

Migration from Palm OS to Windows Mobile is now quick and painless thanks to StyleTap. If you were wondering whether you should make the switch to Windows Mobile from a Palm OS device or have tons of Palm OS applications from your prior affair with a Palm device, then you must check out this application. Since I don't have any Palm applications to try out, I would and I am sure our readers too would like to hear more about how this software functions.

Roadblocks to Delivering Mobile Internet Applications and Services

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "ARTICLE" @ 06:33 AM

http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/10/20/HNmobiletough_1.html

"Unlike the PC-based Internet, companies often can't simply put up a Web site to deliver a service, such as photo sharing or Internet voice calling, to mobile users. That's because mobile phones are constrained by less memory and slower Internet connections than PCs and because browsers may not be able to interact with some phone functions that might enhance an application, said Tony Cripps, an analyst at Ovum."

InfoWorld has posted a thought provoking article which outlines the challenges placed in front of mobile application developers. It would be nice if in the next few years carriers and mobile phone manufacturers would sit down and hammer out a standard that could be set in place for mobile web browsers. Who would have thought such tiny devices would cause such a headache? ;)

Where's the Exit - An ISV's View on Closing Applications

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 08:15 AM

http://blog.iliumsoft.com/?p=65

"A big challenge developers face are requirements given to them by OEMs (the people that make your hardware) and demands from folks like Microsoft and Palmsource. There are times when these requirements conflict with what we want to do or with what customers tell us they are looking for. Microsoft just put up a great blog post about one of these requirements (the missing Exit feature in Windows Mobile discussed at the Windows Mobile Blog). Having read that, I figured I would share a developer perspective on this often frustrating topic..."

Over the weekend Rocco posted about the lack of a close option and the reasons Mike Calligaro from Microsoft gives for it being that way. It's interesting to see and hear why Windows Mobile is that way. It's also interesting to read about how this effects software vendors. Marc from Ilium has posted on the Ilium blog about how the lack of a close option impacts their business and what they have to do about it. It's an interesting read. :)

Developing Smartphone Applications with Embedded Visual Basic

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.omnisoft.com/articles/spevb/default.asp

"Thought you couldn't use eVB to develop Smartphone 2002/2003/WM5 applications? Think again! After purchasing a new Samsung i600, I was eager to start writing some apps for it. Being a veteran VB programmer, I was disappointed that I could not use eVB for the task. But, I said to myself "Now I finally have a real reason to dive into .NET programming". What??? I can't even write apps for my Smartphone using the latest state-of-the-art VS2003.NETcf !!! Unacceptable, there's got to be another way..."

I am sure that everyone who loves Visual Basic development and the Smartphone platform has heard about John Cody and his eVB Smartphone Development Forum. In case you haven't, let me give you a quick introduction. Visual Basic is probably the favorite programming language for a lot of programmers, especially for those who write applications for fun, but Microsoft does not support Visual Basic development on the Smartphone platform and Microsoft's free Embedded Visual Basic development tool does not work with Smartphones. Microsoft wants the developers to use Visual Studio .NET which unlike eVB is not a free tool. This is where John Cody comes in to rescue the developers. Check out his development forum for more information. He even has an article on enabling eVB applications on the Windows Mobile 5.0 based devices; check it out over here.

Prepare Your Applications for the Latest Display Resolutions

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 10:00 AM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/windowsmobile/howto/AdaptYrApp/default.aspx

"Windows Mobile supports an increasing variety of screen resolutions and orientations. Here you'll find the latest news, guidance, and tools to make it easier to Adapt Your App and keep your applications running on the latest device displays."

User submitted image

Mel Sampat over at the Windows Mobile Team Blog is talking about the one-stop source for all the information and resources that a developer would need to write resolution aware applications. I still haven't figured out how to make my hobby project switch between the 176x220 resolution on my older SP3i and the 240x320 on my new 2125, and now I have to worry about the newer (320x240) landscape resolution. In case your are confused by all these numbers, I mean resolutions, then check out the Microsoft site.

GeoTrust Code Authentication Supports Windows Mobile Privileged Applications

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS7011211027.html

"GeoTrust has expanded its Smartphone Credentials code signing service to include privileged certificates for Windows Mobile device environments. Software vendors use digital certificates to sign, or authenticate, the code they provide to wireless carriers and to protect end users against malicious code tampering, according to the company. GeoTrust code signing certificates allow developers to add their "digital signature" to code before it is submitted or transmitted over a network. When issuing code signing certificates, GeoTrust says it verifies that the developer is tied to a legitimate organization and that the individual is authorized to sign code on behalf of that organization."

GeoTrust is now offering both privileged and unprivileged certificates at the same price and in blocks of signing events, without any expiration date. More information can be obtained on the GeoTrust's Web site. It looks like their pricing for 10 signing event is 25% lower than VeriSign's package and is priced at $295.

Freeware Helper Applications from Mike Calligaro

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:00 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/01/11/511660.aspx

I don't know about you, but I like to try and relax on my vacation days. Not that I get very many of those. :( Mike Calligaro, on the other hand, likes to code. He's created 4 free helper applications for your Windows Mobile device. The first one, ToggleBth will toggle your Bluetooth on or off. Nightly will automatically shut off your phone at night. CincoSP is a text based game, and RPNCalc is a Reverse Polish Notation style calculator. All are pretty handy applications, especially given the price. ;) You can find more information over on the Windows Mobile Team Blog.

Developing Multithreaded Applications with the .NET Compact Framework 2.0

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 07:30 AM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/MED204_MSDN_Dev_Multithread_Apps_NETCF2.asp

"Learn how to use the great support of the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 for managed multithreaded applicationswhile avoiding much of the complexity that comes with multithreadingin this self-paced hands-on lab. You will learn how to properly create and terminate threads, how to deal with the challenges of updating user interface controls from inside worker threads, and which synchronization objects to use at different times. Upon completion of this lab, you will know how to use the multithreading capabilities of the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 to create well responsive applications targeting Windows CE 5.0 and Windows Mobilebased devices. This is a level 300 lab, and it should take you 45 minutes to complete."

User submitted image

Master the multithreading capabilities of the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework version 2.0 and create applications that are more responsive. In this step-by-step example a Pocket PC based application is used to demostrate the power of multithreading, but the same concepts can be applied to the Smartphone as well. :)

Opera Platform Enables AJAX Applications on Mobile Phones

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/platform/

"Using state-of-the-art Web technologies, Opera Platform is a powerful and flexible application framework for mobile phones. With Opera Platform you can quickly and affordably create advanced mobile Web applications that give users instant access to online resources such as news headlines, weather forecasts, e-mails, sports results, auction bidding status, or bus schedules. Opera Platform enables you to integrate the phones local applications with online content ranging from regular Web sites to advanced business support systems. Examples can include integrating the phones calendar, contact list and SMS/e-mail with your companys CRM software or reporting systems."

User submitted image

AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. It enables interactive web applications. Google Reader, GMail and Windows Live are some well known examples of sites that use AJAX to enhance the user experience. If you have used the above sites, you must have noticed that the sites are able to dynamically update a section of the web page instead of refreshing the whole page. That is AJAX programming at work. 8) This functionality is very important and the most practical choice for mobile phone browser applications. Mobile phones have limited bandwidth and selectively downloading content would seem like the obvious thing to have in a mobile browser application. Thanks to Opera, it will now become a reality. Opera has released a software development kit to enable web applications to take advantage of AJAX. According to the Opera website the Windows Mobile version will be released later. :-(

Migrating Symbian OS Applications to Windows Mobile-based Smartphones

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 04:30 AM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnppcgen/html/SymbianMigration.asp

"This article is for C++ developers who use Symbian OS and who have developed, or are developing, C++ applications for Symbian OS platforms, such as Series 60 or UIQ, and developers who want to implement their applications on the Windows Mobile operating system for Smartphones. When you first compare the Symbian OS application architecture with the architecture of a Windows Mobile application, they seem to have very little in common. On the Symbian OS, you build C++ graphical user interface (GUI) applications within an application framework by extending base classes that are provided as part of the platform, whereas eMbedded Visual C++ applications that are based on the Windows Mobile operating system are not so closely coupled to the operating system. Windows Mobile has no direct equivalents for common Symbian OS constructs such as two-phase construction or the cleanup stack, and Windows Mobile does not use a Symbian-style client-server model for accessing system resources, such as the file system or socket server."

User submitted image

Are you a developer for the Symbian platform? Wondering what it is like to port applications over to the Windows Mobile based Smartphones? The MSDN article written by Andy Wigley, is for the Symbian developers who want to understand the steps involved in migrating applications written for Symbian OS platforms, such as Series 60 and UIQ, to Windows Mobilebased Smartphones. :-)

Pocket PC Mag Takes a Look at Some Popular Smartphone Applications

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/Sep05/getmore.aspx

"For all of the controversy behind Microsoft's entry into the cellular phone market, one thing is for sure: a Windows Mobile Smartphone is one of the most powerful devices you can fit into a small pocket. No other device this size can offer such robust features, Outlook compatibility, and expandability in a single device. For this issue's focus on communications, we will explore third party software specifically designed for the Smartphone."

Pocket PC Magazine has posted an article outlining some of the top Smartphone applications along with a nice over-view of the app. If you're looking for a little more information about Fizz Traveller, NewsBreak, Skookum, and SmartHiker, then you should head on over and check out this article. SmartHiker is new to me, so I've added it to my list of applications. It looks pretty good too. :)
