HTC Cavalier Now Available From MobilePlanet.com

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 08:30 AM

HTC's follow-up device to the Excalibur (or T-Mobile Dash) has finally become available for purchase in North America. For $565 (or $640 for those in Canada shopping at Expansys.ca ), you can take home one of the hottest new Smartphones to hit the market. The Cavalier offers a faster CPU wth higher speeds for data access, and of course, Windows Mobile 6. For whatever reason, it still sports a super slow USB1.1 connection. :(

So, who here is going to buy one? And who already has it? :)

Pocket Quicken v2.5 Now Available for Windows Mobile Smartphone

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.landware.com/pocketquicken/wmsp/index.html

"If you have a Windows Mobile Smartphone with a built-in hardware keyboard such as the Motorola Q, T-Mobile Dash or Cingular Blackjack, you can now run Pocket Quicken. This menu driven Pocket Quicken gives you all the functionality found in the Windows Mobile version and can run independently or sync seamlessly with desktop Quicken running in Windows XP or Vista. Pocket Quickens mobilizes your financial data, enabling on-the-go access to account balances, credit limits, transaction histories, budgets, exchange rates and more. Full account details, transactions, categories, budgets and memorized payees are all available on your Smartphone with Pocket Quicken. Just as on the desktop, AutoFill is supported so once you start entering the name of a memorized transaction, the rest can be filled in for you. The account list provides a succinct overview of your financial situation."

User submitted image

I haven't used Quicken for the PC in years. When I did use it I liked it. Well now you can have the convenience of Quicken on your smartphone with Pocket Quicken. I haven't actually tried this but you can download a fully functional 30 day trial from their website. The down side? It's $39.95 which I feel is a bit steep for a financial program on a 2-3 inch screen and since Quicken Basic is less than $30 for the PC. But, if Quicken is your financial program of choice and you'd like to use it on the go, then Pocket Quicken is your answer.

The Wait is Over, T-Mobile Windows Mobile 6 Official Upgrade is Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:05 AM

User submitted image

Folks, the wait is over! :D If you are a Dash owner then head over the T-Mobile Web site and grab the official Windows Mobile 6 upgrade. This upgrade will definitely keep you busy over the weekend. Do keep us posted on how the upgrade is working out for you, or if it is giving you trouble. In case you are looking for information on Windows Mobile 6 then check out this discussion thread where our readers are talking about the T-Mobile Dash Windows Mobile 6 (leaked version), and check this link for the demo created by Microsoft. For the folks who downloaded and installed the leaked version, it seems like official version has the same ROM version but I would recommend that if you have the time then please re-load the official ROM. And finally, thanks to our reader Prosper for spotting this upgrade.

Update: Edited the link associated with this post, so that it goes to the main T-Mobile Windows Mobile Upgrade page. Now there should be no confusion about the authenticity of the download. :)

Windows Mobile 6 Product Reference Guide Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 04:10 PM

https://partner.microsoft.com/download/global/40037645

"The Windows Mobile 6 Product Reference Guide provides core information about the exciting new features included in the release of Windows Mobile 6. Windows Mobile helps businesses thrive by helping people to perform their best when mobile. Windows Mobile 6 is the next major wave toward winning in the business segment, and it builds on the existing Windows Mobile value proposition. This document can be used in two ways: first, to provide a full understanding of both the positioning and messaging as well as the features of the Windows Mobile 6 release, and second, as a reference guide to help understand new features."

User submitted image

Want to learn about all the enhancements in Windows Mobile 6? Microsoft has released a Windows Mobile 6 Product Reference Guide in the form of an 11.5 MB PDF with 61 pages, bursting with information from introduction to every new feature in this release, and also differences between various versions - Classic, Standard and Professional. I haven't read the whole document, but from what I have seen my favourite is the section titled "Top Features by Audience." The section talks about the features in Windows Mobile 6 that would interest the five main categories of adopters - mobile operators, OEMs, business customers, IT professionals and developers. One thing I found strange about this list is that the table doesn't list the advantages for regular consumers. Looks like Microsoft is still aiming the platform at the business customers and IT professionals. :?

Opera Mobile 8.65 Beta Available for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:15 AM

http://get.opera.com/pub/opera/winmobile/865b/

It looks like Opera has just released a new beta version of Opera Mobile for Windows Mobile. It appears to be version 8.65 Beta and the files are dated March 28th 2007. I don't know what is new in this release because Opera hasn't updated their Change Log to reflect this new build. Seeing as it's a point release, I can't imagine it being anything too earth shattering. But if you've been having problems with Opera Mobile, you might want to give this version a try. You can download a copy for your Pocket PC or Smartphone directly from Opera's site.

Windows Mobile 6 SDK Now Available for Download

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 08:45 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=06111A3A-A651-4745-88EF-3D48091A390B&displaylang=en

"The Windows Mobile 6 SDKs add documentation, sample code, header and library files, emulator images and tools to Visual Studio that let you build applications for Windows Mobile 6. With Windows Mobile 6, we are revising our SKU taxonomy and naming to better align our brand and products with the realities of todays mobile device marketplace. The historical form-factor based distinction between Windows Mobile powered Smartphone and Windows Mobile powered Pocket PC Phone Edition is blurring dramatically. We want our taxonomies and terminology to evolve to better reflect the evolution of the mobile device industry."

User submitted image

The above screen shot shows the new Cellular Emulator tool that works in conjunction with the Device Emulator to enable the developer to test the application's behavior in a variety of cellular scenarios such as incoming phone calls, incoming SMS messages, dropped phone calls, and dropped data connectivity. 8) The SDK also includes a FakeGPS emulator. These tools are welcome additions to the SDK; glad that Microsoft is improving the developer support. To find out what else is new in the Windows Mobile 6 SDK check out this article.

Windows Mobile 6 Upgrades Available for Free to Existing Vendors

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 08:30 AM

Everyone has been wondering if their device will see an update to Windows Mobile 6. In the past, very few manufacturers and carriers have gone down that path. There's a significant cost required in buying the new license and customizing it for the device and of course, testing it on the device and networks. Hopefully things will be different this time. We've just learned that Microsoft has given a free license to vendors who will upgrade their devices. So I think it's clear that Microsoft understands the frustration that all of us feel when a new OS is released and are trying to change things. It's expected that HTC will offer upgrades for any device with a keyboard - as all of you Dash/Excalibur users are already aware. Unfortunately we don't know what Motorola or Samsung plan to do about this. The ball is in the carriers and manufacturers court. Let's hope they don't drop it. :?

HTC S710 (Vox) Official Specs and Photos Now Available on the HTC Web Site

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.europe.htc.com/products/htcs710.html

"The HTC S710 smartphone is the most compact smartphone with semi auto-sliding full keyboard. It redefines the smartphone with its attractive and sleek design yet its much more than just a phone! The S710 is a multi-functional device and is the first smartphone to use the new Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard platform. The new Windows platform builds on the previous version by enhancing business and enterprise tools, and providing a richer interface for better user experience."

User submitted image

HTC has updated its European Web site with the official specifications and hi-resolution photographs of its upcoming models: HTC S710 (Vox), HTC Advantage and HTC P3350. Not sure if this means that our European friends would get to play with this phone first? :? The HTC press photo library has been updated as well, check out the hi-resolution photos of their upcoming models. By now we know most of the specifications by heart but I noticed something that I hadn't noticed up until now, that the S710 will sport USB 2.0. I love the S710 form-factor and its feature set. The only complaint anyone would have against this device is the lack of 3G support.

SafeMode 2 for Smartphone is Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 03:20 AM

http://www.monocube.com/content/view/37/43/

"As I promised, I managed to release the first ever Smartphone version of SafeMode - now Smartphone users have the same advanced crash protection system Pocket PC users enjoyed. I know speed is important - it's even more important on the Smartphones, since they are a lot slower than Pocket PCs. That's why I worked on SafeDirect, a feature that allows direct boot in and out of SafeMode. This eliminates the dual soft-resets required to switch between normal and SafeMode. Aside from this, all other standard features are there: disabling Services, Home plugins, Startup applications and Pocket Internet Explorer add-ons."

User submitted image
Figure 1: SafeMode adds this special message to the Smartphone bootup process. Pressing any key during this message triggers the SafeMode based bootup.

Once again a developer has stepped up to fill a gap in the feature set provided by Microsoft in Windows Mobile Smartphones. I am talking about the ability to trigger a "safe mode" based bootup, so that the user can safely remove misbehaving home screen plugins or start-up applications. 8) I think of this software as a must have insurance for my Smartphone. Check out the SafeMode product page for more information. A trial version is available and if you are interested in the useful functionality offered by this tool then you can buy it at the special promotional price of $6.95. Two more photos of this utility running on my Smartphone after the break.
User submitted image
Figure 2: SafeMode replaces the standard bootup logo when SafeMode based bootup option is selected.

User submitted image
Figure 3: When in SafeMode, the home screen is disabled and a special message is displayed. The user can now remove programs or make the necessary changes to correct the problem being experienced.

Moto Q Now Available on Sprint

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 07:30 AM

Sprint has released their version of the Motorola Q for sale on their website earlier this week. If you're on Sprint and have been waiting for a good Smartphone, then this is your time to act. ;) Check out the full unboxing video over at EverythingQ.com and tells us what you think. I like the black version better, but not enough to give up what I already have.

SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Downloads Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 08:30 AM

http://pluralsight.com/blogs/jimw/archive/2007/01/15/45704.aspx

"Ok It looks like it's finally here. The false-start in December where the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition folks pulled the downloads has past. Also, me jumping the gun last week and posting the download URLs before the "official" release is over. I checked with the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition folks on Friday to confirm that it was OK to post the links today (15-January-2007) and they said today is the official release so I should feel free to post the links. So after all that, SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition and all of the related tools are "live and in color". Enjoy it. The added desktop support now gives us a lightweight, in-process (no server process) database for both desktop and Windows Mobile. Just as important, the database format is compatible so moving a database between a desktop computer and a Windows Mobile device is a simple file copy."

User submitted image

SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition enables the developers to have a compact embedded database for their mobile applications for tablet PCs, Pocket PCs, Smartphones and also regular Windows desktops. Check out the official Microsoft home page for SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition over here for more information.

MMS Exploit Released for Windows Mobile No Patch Available

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/security_response/weblog/2006/12/mms_exploit_released_for_windo.html

"Collin Mulliner gave an updated version of his presentation at 23C3 in Berlin titled Advanced Attacks Against PocketPC Phones (we originally blogged about it in August). As I previously mentioned, one of the vulnerabilities he discussed had, to my knowledge, still not been patched. Well Collin confirmed this in his presentation and also released a working exploit for the vulnerability to liven things up a little."

User submitted image

Well here we go. Now these writings keep referring to Pocket PC Phones. We all know most don't know the difference, except us of course. I suspect Symantec, who seem to be the most desperate to find I threat that will scare us, doesn't. Forgive my sarcasm but I don't think there is a Windows Mobile device big enough to hold a bloated Symantec Anti-(you fill in the blank) application. Perhaps one day Symantec will get their wish. I do find it interesting that with all the mobile devices out there now, there really are no threats. Any thoughts as to why?

Folks, if you didn't like the silver Q or if you are simply bored with your silver Q, then it is time for you to log in to the Verizon Web site. I don't think Verizon or Motorola have provided the details on the updates to the Q. The word on the street is that this new Q carries an updated software that not only fixes some problems but also improves battery life. :) Also, the new unit ships with a carrying case instead of a holster. So who has ordered one?

Extended Battery Now Available for Samsung i607 Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.phonecycle.com/batteries/modeldetails.asp?modelid=808&brandid=13

"Don't you just hate it when your Samsung BlackJack SGH-i607 battery power indicator starts beeping to tell you that your phone is running out of power. Most standard batteries that come free with your phone are built only to give you minimum amount of talk time and stand by time. This causes all the hassle when you really need to use your Samsung BlackJack SGH-i607. This is your chance to get an extended battery that gives your Samsung BlackJack SGH-i607 extra capacity to hold charge. This means that your phone's battery will last longer and you dont have to worry about charging your phone all the time. The new Samsung BlackJack SGH-I607 - 1800mAh OEM Extended Battery will works perfectly with your existing Travel Charger (Wall Plug-in Charger) and your Cell Phone Car Charger."

A sure sign the the included battery doesn't have enough power to turn a hamster wheel - You can now pickup an extended battery for your new Samsung i607 Smartphone. It looks like the extended battery has a much larger capacity, so you should be much better off. 8)

Motorola Q is Now Available for $99

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/promotion/controller?promotionType=hotDeals&action=viewHotDeals

User submitted image

The Q is a great device for $199. In case you thought it was a bit pricey, you will be happy to hear that Verizon has lowered the price by offering a $100 mail-in-rebate. Now you can get your hands on the Q for $99 but you will have to sign up for a 2 year contract. I wonder if this new pricing strategy is influenced by the T-Mobile Dash which went on sale last week. :? Hopefully this new pricing will boost the sales of the Q and help achieve the sales numbers that Motorola is looking for.
