Google Calendar Sync Updated

Posted by Tim Williamson in "Digital Home Software" @ 03:00 PM

http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/...nc-updated.html

"Thanks for all the feedback you have sent us about Google Calendar Sync. We're rolling out an update that should make it a lot more useful. Previously, your Google Calendar email address needed to be the organizer or an attendee of your Microsoft Outlook events for the Outlook events to sync to your Google Calendar. Now, when you choose to do a 2-way sync or a 1-way sync from Outlook calendar to Google Calendar, all of your Outlook events will be synced to your Google Calendar. If you haven't been auto-updated to Google Calendar Sync 0.9.3.2 and you don't want to wait for the update, you can download it here."

Google is pushing out an update to correct some bugs in their Calendar Sync. I've been too chicken to try it out yet, I'll let the suckers...err...early adopters iron out any bugs first (hehe!). My main concern is how well recurring appointments sync up between Outlook and Google Calendar. For those of you who've used Calendar Sync, do you have any good or bad feedback to share? Has anyone had their calendar wiped out or other horror stories? Or has it been smooth sailing?

Google Calendar Rolls Out for Mobiles

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/05/25/google-calendar-rolls-out-for-mobiles/

"Google's rumored and real romp through mobile space continues with the announcement of its Google Calendar application's support for mobiles. The calendar seems to work perfectly, displaying a day by day view of your world and your plans for it, though, sadly, we couldn't find any way to remove events one they were added. Events can be added by typing a description of your appointment in the "Quick Add" box at the bottom of the screen. For example, typing "Pause for dinner today 16:00" (or 4 pm) adds that event to your calendar. This is a pretty handy tool if you rely heavily on your Google calendar or aren't into all that Windows Mobile Calendar syncin' business."

I don't use Google Calendar for my appointments, but for those of you who do, Google Calendar for mobile devices is here. Like everything else with Google it's in beta. Why is that by the way? How long can Gmail be in beta? Anyway, if Google Calendar for mobile devices is what you've been waiting for, you can read about it at Engadget Mobile or you can go to calendar.google.com on your mobile device and keep your almost missed appointments. :D

TeamCalendar now in BETA - View Co-Worker's Calendar and Plan Meeting from the Smartphone

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.teamcalendar.com/

"Smartphone & Pocket PC users throughout the world can now bring their "virtual secretary" along while they are on the move. HandStep is launching an intuitive program that enables mobile co-workers to schedule meetings on the spot via their PDA or SmartPhone. ... TeamCalendar gives you a complete overview of your colleagues schedules directly from your PDA or Smartphone for any given day or week. Whats more, you can book meetings on the spot so no more phone calls or emails trying to set up that all-important meeting."

User submitted image

If you are always away from your desktop and want to schedule meetings on the go, then TeamCalendar is the application to check out. It is currently in BETA, and expected to be released sometime in July. The price seems to be a bit steep for a feature that I would like my Windows Mobile device to provide out of the box. But sadly even the upcoming Windows Mobile 6 will not have support for this. Windows Mobile 6 will enable you to see the attendees and invite new ones, but you will not be able to see if they are available or not.

Sync Google Calendar to your Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:15 AM

http://thegooley.wordpress.com/tag/gcalendarsync/

"GCalendarSync allows you to import events from one or more of your Google Calendars directly to your Windows Mobile PDA or Smartphone over the air using GPRS, without docking or using Outlook or the desktop computer in any way."

User submitted image

There's been some talk in the past about sync'ing your Google calendar with your Smartphone and the best way to do this. If I recall correctly, the application ended up removing all of your appointments from Exchange - not good. I haven't tested this, but then again, I don't use Google's Calendar either. ;) But for all of you who do, you might want to give this a try. Just be careful and back things up first. Please report back and let us know how it works.

How to Sync Google Calendar with Outlook and Smartphones Automatically

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:30 AM

http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20060818_how_to_sync_google_calendar_with_outlook_and_smartphones_automatically.html

"My big complaint about Google Calendar was lack of support for easily syncing calendar data with my smartphone. I use Outlook for my personal information management because it's still the only thing that puts all my data in one place the way I want it. Google Calendar's iCal export made manual syncing with Outlook possible, but I want to get all my calendar data from my computer to my phone automatically. RemoteCalendars solves this problem, making ongoing data sync simple after a convoluted setup process. Here's how you can sync your Google Calendar with Outlook 2003 or 2007 and automatically sync to your phone in the process."

If you use Google's Web based calendar for keeping track of your appointments then you will find this how-to guide useful. I must point out to our readers that this concept can be applied to the Yahoo calendar as well. Yahoo provides a free tool for syncing its Web based calendar with Outlook. ;-)

New Homescreen Calendar Plugin

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=202836

User submitted image

One of the MoDaCo members has come up with this homescreen plugin. Personally, I think things like this take up too much screen real estate. From the thread it seems you install plugin with a .cab file. Then install the theme you see in the image above. If you want your own theme you will have to edit the xml yourself however.

Papyrus looks like a pretty nice replacement for the limited functionality of the Smartphone calendar. Papyrus beta is a free download, however you must be a registered user of their forums before you can download it. Once you've registered, use this link to download Papyrus.

Developer One Power Calendar Reviewed By Boston Pocket PC

Posted by David McNamee in "ARTICLE" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.bostonpocketpc.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=162

"As someone who uses both a Pocket PC and a Smartphone, there always tends to be some apprehension when I first begin to use any Smrtphone application from a company experienced in the Pocket PC world. I have visions of the developer(s) saying "OK - let's figure out how to resize our Pocket PC application's screen, then add softkey support. Then, we ship!" Needless to say, porting an application from the Pocket PC to Smartphone platform requires a bit more thinking.

My apprehension was hightened when I first agreed to review Developer one's Power Calendar and Power Tasks (EDITORS NOTE: This review focuses on Power Calendar). Developer one has been extremely successful with their Agenda Fusion product; this did not, however, guarantee that they would easily move to the Smartphone development platform. After a very brief bit of initial use, I was able to breath a sigh of relief, as Developer one has put together a product that shows their strengths in understanding the PIM market, yet thoughtfully implements an interface well suited for the Smartphone device."

Power Calendar Preview

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.mpx200.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article

"As I see it, there were two major things missing from the SmartPhone
operating system as it comes on the phone, a good e-book reader (preferably Palm
Reader) and a powerful calendar application. I would go as far as to say
that all Windows CE devices have had weak calendar applications. Every
device I have had so far, I have always used a PIM replacement program. For SmartPhone, there has not been any options yet, but just around the corner you will be able to get Power Calendar by Developer One and guess what, as the name suggests, this program will give your calendar some power for a change."

User submitted image

Sean Murphy from Mobile Gadget News (formerly MPx200.org) has written up a nice sneak preview of the upcoming Power Calendar release from DeveloperOne. If you find the current calendar application is lacking a little, you should check this out to see what's coming from DeveloperOne really soon.
