Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for Windows Vista - It Includes File Synchronizing!

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 10:30 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx

"The Windows Mobile Device Center enables you to set up new partnerships, synchronize content and manage music, pictures and video with Windows Mobile powered devices (Windows Mobile 2003 or later). The Windows Mobile Device Center combines an efficient business-data synchronization platform with a compelling user experience. The Windows Mobile Device Center helps you to quickly set up new partnerships, synchronize business-critical information such as e-mail, contacts and calendar appointments, easily manage your synchronization settings, and transfer business documents between your device and PC."

User submitted image

Yay! We can now synchronize our smartphone files with Windows Vista! This includes touch screen and non-touch screen devices. It's about time this came out. And while we all realize this should have been included in the Device Center from the start, kudos to Microsoft for at least getting it out now. Ok, I'm off to download so I can be in synchronize heaven. :D

Microsoft Promises Fix for File Synchronization on Vista's Windows Mobile Device Center

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 04:40 AM

http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13033

Recently we had reported that Windows Mobile 6 supports file synchronization. However, this feature is available only for Windows XP - ActiveSync 4.5 users. Users of the latest and greatest Windows operating system, Windows Vista, cannot make use of this awesome Windows Mobile 6 feature. Lot of our readers and numerous smartphone related Web sites have expressed their outrage. And now, Brighthand has received confirmation from Microsoft stating that Windows Vista users will soon be able to enjoy this feature via an update to Windows Mobile Device Center. Personally, I am a bit annoyed that Microsoft didn't contact us with their official statement. :(

The official Microsoft statement on the issue:
Microsoft via Brighthand said: "Currently, Windows Mobile 6 users can synchronize files between PCs and smartphones with Active Sync 4.5. Microsoft will update Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) on Windows Vista PCs to support file synchronization with Windows Mobile 6 by mid-June. We appreciate our customers continuing to use ActiveSync 4.5 for file synchronization until this update is available and are looking forward to offering the WMDC synchronize option very soon."

How To Change the Icon in Windows Mobile Device Center

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 11:30 AM

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-i730-i830-i830w/85310-vista-windows-mobile-device-center-picture-icon-hack.html

"I watched a few of the online videos demonstrating the WMDC and in one of them it was mentioned that OEMs (the people who release the devices) are capable of switching the graphic to a "custom" graphic. I immediately searched the web trying to find information on how to change the graphic. Nothing was found, just the fact the "OEMs can change the graphic". So next I searched the PC for any indication of the image..."

User submitted image

mrailing over at PDAPhoneHome.com has figured out how to change the device icon that shows up in Vista's Windows Mobile Device Center. I did this with my Blackjack and I got the new icon to show in Explorer, but not in WMDC until after I rebooted my laptop. I figured that all of you would be very interested in knowing and trying out this info. Please report back and let us know how it went for you. :)

Windows Mobile Device Center is Here but...

Posted by Jerry Raia in "THOUGHT" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx

WMDC is no better than ActiveSync as far as I am concerned. Take a quick look at Kris Kumar's post and thread for some sample frustrations. We have people first having to find it. Why isn't it just part of the OS as they stuffed everything else into it? Yes it looks pretty.

User submitted image

It needs to work "pretty" too! If you looked at that thread you saw people opening up ports in firewalls to make things work. How many average users will figure that out? My favorite new feature though is that if you previously had ActiveSync on XP or the WMDC beta on Vista, when you install the released WMDC it won't pick up your device names and will then tell you the names are already in use! I had to go into the registry and find the old device names, delete the keys (they are huge) then go back and rename the new renamed devices back to the old ones. Go try to explain that to your neighbor who can barely get their email. I guess they just didn't have enough time, 5 years, to make sure these things worked. Those of us, like me, who have push enabled devices and have an exchange server don't really need this headache. I won't even install WMDC on my laptop. I'd rather take out the storage card, put it into an adapter and then connect to the PC to transfer files. I still can't get my BlackJack to sync. In short, I don't need this, do you?

Vista Windows Mobile Device Center Walk Through

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THOUGHT" @ 06:30 AM

http://chris.leckness.com/2007/01/13/vista-windows-mobiles-device-center-walk-through

"Since I installed Windows Vista yesterday, I had to set up the Windows Mobile Device Center. I use an Exchange Server (Which by the way works well with Outlook 2007) so I rarely sync anymore, but for when I do, I have to be ready. This walk through has over 25 screenshots, I hope you enjoy."

User submitted image

Chris Leckness is walking us through the Windows Mobile Device Center in Windows Vista. I haven't played much with Windows Vista's RTM version and somehow I am not compelled to run Vista on my daily use computer. What about you? Are you already running Vista RTM or planning to upgrade immediately once Vista is released?

Pocket PC Techs Becomes North American Service Center for i-mate Devices

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 04:45 PM

http://www.pocketpctechs.com

This is some great news for anyone with an i-mate device. I've dealt with sending my device back to i-mate for repair (mine was sent to Dubai) and I have to tell you that it was an experience that I don't want to do again. Thanks to this new arrangement, I don't have to either. Pocket PC Techs have been doing amazing work for a long time now and I'm happy to see that they'll be doing work on any of my i-mate devices. The full press release can be found below. :D

"PocketPCTechs.com was declared the official US and Canadian i-mate Authorized Repair Center, servicing all i-mate devices, both under warranty and out of warranty.

We are extremely pleased to become one of i-mates Authorized Repair Centers, said Leonard Wesson, CEO of PocketPCTechs.com. We are confident that our qualified staff and team of advanced technicians will be able to offer i-mate customers efficient and comprehensive service.
I-mate devices will be coming in to PocketPCTechs.com, located in Fountain Valley, Ca., from the United States and Canada. The entire i-mate PDA family will be accepted for service, including the popular JAM, JASJAR, Smartflip and JASJAM.

Were very excited to begin this relationship with PocketPCTechs.com, said Hector Lopez C, Director of Sales and Business Development (Americas) for i-mate. We are confident that they will diligently represent our company's integrity and dedication to customer satisfaction. Since establishing our presence in the US, we have expanded our service center presence into Canada and Latin America. As our customer base continues to grow, more service centers will be added around the world.

Customers with warranty devices will start the repair process by ordering the diagnostic service. If the customers device is confirmed to be under warranty, the diagnostic fee and return FedEx Ground shipping fee will be waived. Customers with out-of-warranty devices will be asked to review the Out-of-Warranty Services section of PocketPCTechs.coms i-mate Web site to see if the repair needed is offered. If the repair cannot be found on the site, the customer should then order the diagnostic service. No charges will be made to customers credit card until their device is confirmed as either under or out-of-warranty, and all work has been completed.

Its a great way to expose a new realm of people to our products and services, Wesson said. Were grateful for the opportunity. For more information regarding PocketPCTechs services and products, please call (714)839-5300, visit the company Web site at PocketPCTechs.com , or PocketPCTechs official i-mate service center Web site at http://www.pocketpctechs.com/imate ."

Mobile Video Solution For Windows Media Center

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:35 AM

http://www.makayama.com/mediacenter.html

"Do you have a Windows Media Center and a Windows Mobile phone? Yes? Well listen up! Makayama lets you watch your recorded Windows Media TV shows on more than 500 mobile devices. Install the software on your Windows Media Center PC then simply choose your mobile device - everything else is automatic. Every new TV recording will be converted in the background to a mobile video format which is then copied to the device when connected via USB. The software can be operated with a TV remote control and has the Windows Media Center look and feel."

This has to be one of the handiest software solutions to emerge for the Windows Mobile platform in a while. While I am a huge fan of Orb for streaming recorded TV shows to my handset, there are times when I would rather not mess around with streaming files and would prefer to have direct access to them. Now the real problem here is deciding whether I love my recorded shows enough to spend $34.95 for this software ;)

The Windows Mobile Device Center Story - How it is Supposed to Work

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 07:30 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/melsam/archive/2006/09/07/744902.aspx

"Microsoft released Vista RC1 last week and some of you are already using it. If you use a Pocket PC or Smartphone device, you may be disappointed to find that the Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) is missing from Vista RC1. I've seen a few posts about this on various forums so I got some clarification from the team working on WMDC. First of all, here's how WMDC is supposed to work. When Vista ships, it will contain a "base driver", which will enable basic connectivity and some features such as browsing the device, copying files and syncing with Windows Media Player. But it will not enable full ActiveSync and RAPI features. Nor will it allow you to partner up with Outlook to sync PIM data such as Calendar, Contacts, Tasks etc."

User submitted image

That is Mel Sampat, a Windows Mobile Program Manager, talking about how the sync functionality is enabled in Windows Vista; what the users can expect to see when they try to connect their mobile devices to Vista. In case want to see some more screen shots then you can check out my last two posts on this topic, over here and here. :)

Goodbye ActiveSync, Hello Windows Mobile Device Center

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:00 AM

Windows Mobile Device Center is the new name for the interface that enables mobile device synchronization in Windows Vista. In my last article "Inside Windows Vista: Windows Mobile Device Center and Sync Center," I had offered a quick look at the feature as it was implemented in the Windows Vista Beta Build 5308. Our readers will remember that I had concluded the article saying that the feature has not been implemented completely and the critical pieces that enable synchronization of Outlook information like contacts, calendar and tasks etc, the most important pieces of device synchronization, are not enabled. Meanwhile Microsoft was claiming that Windows Vista will have the ActiveSync functionality baked into the core operating system but Vista testers, including myself, could not find any proof to verify that claim. Even after Windows Vista Beta 2 Build 5384 (a major milestone) was released in May, the mobile device synchronization was not supported. This made me believe that Microsoft had shelved the plans to improve the mobile device support in Windows Vista because of all the delays associated with the product launch. The situation changed recently after I received a tip from one of our readers, mzh, who informed us about an update that has been made available to Beta 2 testers. I booted my test system into Windows Vista and ran Windows Update. Sure enough there was an update waiting to be installed and it enabled the missing feature. :) After looking at the updated Windows Mobile Device Center, I can confidently say - "Goodbye ActiveSync!"

So if you are interested in learning about how mobile device synchronization will look like in Windows Vista, read on...
The Missing Feature

If you are wondering why I am showing Windows Update screen shots then please bear with me. It is a new feature in Windows Vista; I thought you might be interested in it. Plus this is how I got the Windows Mobile Device Center working, so in case you have access to the Vista Beta then you can follow these steps. ;-)

Figure 2: Let's see what all updates do we have? "Update for Windows Vista Beta 2" must be the magic update that enables the new sync functionality. Click on the image for the full size image. (72KB)

I am fairly positive that in the future builds of Windows Vista and definitely in the final consumer release, this update will be baked into the core operating system.

Roxio is offering a handy little tool to help you convert and transfer content from your Media Center to your Windows Mobile device. Those of us with a Media Center know the pain of transferring recorded content to your device for a road trip. This tool might make that a more pleasant experience. There is a trial version available and you can purchase a copy from the Roxio website for $30. If anyone here is brave enough to install it, be sure to let us know how it turns out. I'm always extremely cautious when it comes to installing software on my Media Center. :worried:

Microsoft TechNet: Windows Vista Mobile Device Center Step by Step Guide

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 03:30 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/library/db983da1-8f87-4dd2-828a-4df238a3138b.mspx

"Windows Mobile Device Center is the new name for ActiveSync in Microsoft Windows Vista, and provides overall device management features for your Windows Mobile-based devices in Windows Vista, including smartphones and pocket PCs. All of the features previously available in ActiveSync are available in Windows Vista, including synchronization and setting up your partnership. However, most of the user interface has changed in an effort to enhance your ability to easily and intuitively find device-related tasks and improve the overall usability of those tasks. Please note that only a portion of Windows Mobile Device Center is included in this release of Windows Vista. This primarily includes core device connectivity components, which allows the operating system to recognize that a Windows Mobile-based device has connected and load the appropriate device drivers loaded and services. Included with this is our Windows Mobile Device Center base application that enables some basic functionality, including the ability to browse the contents of your device, use desktop passthrough to sync with Microsoft Exchange, and change some general computer and connection settings."

User submitted image

Folks, we now know for sure that users of Windows Vista will not need ActiveSync to perform mobile device synchronization; Windows Vista will come with Windows Mobile Device Center that will enable all the ActiveSync tasks. Recently I had written the article "Inside Windows Vista: Windows Mobile Device Center and Sync Center," which demonstrated the new features for mobile device support in Windows Vista. In the article I had mentioned that I was unable to carry out some of the most significant tasks like synchronizing the Outlook data, and thanks to this Microsoft TechNet article, we now know that the Windows Vista February CTP is not feature complete. ;-)

Inside Windows Vista: Windows Mobile Device Center and Sync Center

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 05:00 AM

Microsoft has released the Windows Vista February CTP (Community Technology Preview) release, also known as the Beta 2 - Build 5308. This release is being called by Microsoft as "feature complete," what it means is that all the key capabilities planned for the Windows Vista year end release are now officially available for testing in this release. There are bugs and performance slow-downs which will be fixed before the final release and the user experience will also be improved before Windows Vista hits the store shelves. But there will not be any drastic changes to the current functionality.

User submitted image

Windows Vista recognizes that nowadays everyone carries multiple portable devices: PDAs, media players and Smartphones, and that it is important to provide a central place for managing these devices, setting up the synchronization rules and viewing the conflicts/errors. Windows Vista promises to improve the user experience for mobile devices with the help of Sync Center. So let's take a quick look at the Windows Mobile device support in Windows Vista and see if the Beta 2 comes close to fulfilling that promise.

Windows Mobile Device Center
User submitted image
Figure 1: Windows Vista is a visual delight. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (313KB)

Every square inch of the user interface has been redesigned. Right from the Start button and the Start menu to the Control Panel have been redesigned. The translucent glass effect is quite refreshing. Windows Vista is supposed to enable a simple yet powerful user interface in a stable and secure environment. To learn more about Windows Vista check out the official site.

Windows Vista detects and installs the necessary drivers; plug and play at work.

Figure 3: The Windows Mobile Device Center. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (95KB)

Without even installing the ActiveSync application or any other Windows Mobile related application, Windows Vista provides a simple user interface for synchronizing the media files and to explore the storage on the mobile device.

User submitted image
Figure 4: The pesky "Windows needs your permission..." dialog. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (103KB)

Windows Vista's emphasis on security means that even users logged in as administrators will be bombarded with prompts similar to the one above every time they try to change a system setting. In this case I had clicked on the "Mobile Device Settings" link.

User submitted image
Figure 5: Doesn't this dialog look similar to the Connection Settings in the ActiveSync application? Click on the image for the high resolution image. (104KB)

Folks, ActiveSync is not going away, a part of it is going to be an integral part of Windows Vista.

User submitted image
Figure 6: The File Management link in the Windows Mobile Device Center is similar to the File menu Explore option in ActiveSync. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (55KB)

Don't you like the way it shows the total memory and the available memory?

User submitted image
Figure 8: The Pictures, Music and Video link brings up the Windows Media Player 11. I have not played with the Windows Media Player 11 or its media file sync capability. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (73KB)

As you can see Windows Vista has made the process of pairing the mobile device with Windows easier and some of the commonly performed tasks have been made available in an easy to use applet, the Windows Mobile Device Center. But where is the email, contacts, calendar, tasks and notes synchronization capability. I tried a lot but could not find any screen that would let me configure it. You may have noticed that I was not asked to specify any names for the partnership. In Windows Vista, I believe, this form of connection is called the Quick Connect, it is very similar to the Guest partnership in the ActiveSync application. The help also did not provide me any guidance for enabling Outlook data sync. Either the Windows Mobile Device Center is missing some features (but Beta 2 is supposed to be feature complete) or I am missing some step.

MSDN Smart Client Developer Center: Rebooted

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 12:30 PM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/smartclient/

"Welcome to the new and improved Smart Client Developer Center. The goal of the site is to help you understand smart clients, what they are, when they are most appropriate, and most importantly, the best and most efficient way to construct them. Whether you are new to this site or have been here before you should first check out the smart client definition. This will give you a good idea of what qualities a smart client possesses as well as what the advantages of smart clients are. Smart client technology is becoming increasingly important as more capability appears in Windows and business users and consumers need more capable software to help them manage their world."

The revamped MSDN Smart Client Developer Center will provide the knowledge and advice, that the developers need to design the smart client solutions. The site will help the developers understand the tools and technologies that are available, the best practices, code samples and also enable the developer to interact with other smart client developers. Jonathan Wells has summarized the changes and the important articles in his blog over here.
