How Would You Change Windows Mobile 6?

Posted by Pete Paxton in "THOUGHT" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/24/how-would-you-change-windows-mobile-6/

"While some of you have no doubt been running Windows Mobile 6 for a few months or more already (thanks, XDA developers!), the majority of the world is just recently getting its first taste of Microsoft's latest mobile operating system from new devices like the Sprint Mogul and updates to others like the T-Mobile Dash. The critics have certainly been, um, critical of the new OS, to say the least -- "evolutionary, not revolutionary" seems to be the general consensus -- but until we're allowed to behold the glorious light that is Photon, it's the best we've got for now. Still, while WM6 has beefed up Office support and arguably improved the tethering sitch, there are a number of issues that users have been griping about for years which have curiously yet to be addressed. Where's the tabbed browsing in Pocket IE? How come we have to rely on pricey third-party apps to make a decent Today screen? And the old favorite, why can't we have the choice of "managing our own memory" and using that damn "X" button to actually close an app? These are just a few of the complaints that have been making the rounds about an OS that feels like its definitely in need of a serious refresh -- if for no other reason than to draw some of the hype away from splashy young competitors; so, what do you think: what could Redmond have done differently this time around?"

Now I'm going to put a slightly different spin on this. I admit there are certain functions like the "X" close option that should just be there. But could it be that MS doesn't include certain functions so developers can create these programs instead? I think Microsoft gets criticized no matter what they do. I remember years ago back in the Netscape days everyone was frustrated that Microsoft didn't have a suitable browser. As soon as IE came out, everyone criticized MS for putting Netscape out of business. Think about Windows Firewall for a moment. Everyone criticized MS for not having a firewall built into the OS. Then they criticized MS because Windows Firewall isn't that robust. But let's face it, if they did come up with a powerhouse firewall, wouldn't we complain that they've put companies that make firewalls out of business? It's like Microsoft can't win no matter what direction they go. How does Apple do it without being criticized? So could the reason they don't put more into their OS (including mobile) be because they leave room for developers? And now my question: What should have absolutely been included in WM6, what should be left for developers, and what would you change?

How To Change the Icon in Windows Mobile Device Center

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 11:30 AM

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-i730-i830-i830w/85310-vista-windows-mobile-device-center-picture-icon-hack.html

"I watched a few of the online videos demonstrating the WMDC and in one of them it was mentioned that OEMs (the people who release the devices) are capable of switching the graphic to a "custom" graphic. I immediately searched the web trying to find information on how to change the graphic. Nothing was found, just the fact the "OEMs can change the graphic". So next I searched the PC for any indication of the image..."

mrailing over at PDAPhoneHome.com has figured out how to change the device icon that shows up in Vista's Windows Mobile Device Center. I did this with my Blackjack and I got the new icon to show in Explorer, but not in WMDC until after I rebooted my laptop. I figured that all of you would be very interested in knowing and trying out this info. Please report back and let us know how it went for you. :)

Windows Mobile 5.0 Applications Can Monitor Cell Phone Activity and Respond to Change

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 03:30 AM

http://www.developer.com/ws/pc/article.php/3547381

"For many Windows Mobile applications, monitoring the various aspects of the state of a Pocket PC or a Smartphone client can be quite daunting. Often, only the heartiest .NET Compact Framework developers with extensive knowledge of the Windows Mobile APIs and P/Invoke coding are up to the challenge of this type of development. Recognizing these issues, Microsoft has responded with a new managed State and Notification Broker API for Windows Mobile 5.0. This new API provides C# or VB.NET developers with a number of benefits in a limited amount of application code."

The State and Notification Broker API provides access to over 100 pieces of state information, like new incoming call or SMS message, battery charge and network signal strength. Mobile application developers can now monitor them and create custom actions when the state properties undergo a change. Don Sorcinelli has written a useful article that explains how a developer can take advantage of this new Windows Mobile 5.0 API.

For Now, Unwired Means Unlisted. That May Change.

Posted by Kris Kumar in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/30/technology/30cell.html?ex=1095134400&en=1246dba4b081d1bb&ei=5070

"In October, most major cellphone carriers plan to start compiling a publicly accessible listing of wireless phone numbers.

"Being listed in the new cellphone directory will be strictly voluntary, reflecting an increasing tension in today's digital world. New technologies and gadgets make people easily accessible any time, in the remotest of locations. At the same time, users of the new gadgets are becoming far more guarded about who gets to reach out and touch them."

This will come as good news for all the folks who have decided to dump the land line and switch over to the wireless phone. Now they can have the cell phone number listed in the 411 directory, so that family and friends can find them. But for folks who have both, the land line and the wireless connection, it is time to sit back and think whether or not to signup. Luckily in my case the decision was easy. I am surely not going to get my number listed on the cell phone white pages. My cell phone is the means for me to reach out to the civilization when I need to, and only my family and close friends know the number. No one else needs to know about it. Another interesting point, the largest US carrier Verizon Wireless has not yet agreed to have its customers listed in the mobile white pages. :? What are your thoughts? Will you have your number listed?

Tweak: Change the Start Menu Order

Posted by David McNamee in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 06:30 AM

The following tweak involves editing your Smartphone's registry. Improperly editing values in the registry could cause unexpected behavior or cause the Smartphone to stop working. For more information on editing the registry, see this post. This tweak is provided as is, with no guarantees as to its effectiveness, or to the safety of using this tweak.

Change the Start Menu Order.
Instructions provided by Jonny Midnight

Purpose
The programs listed in the Smartphone's Start Menu are in alphabetical order - except for the first few that are fixed by either Microsoft or the service provider. Since it might be nice to have the programs listed in an order in the order in which you'd likely use them, we provide this tweak.

Instructions
  • Open up Regedit, and browse to the following:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Shell/StartMenu
  • Select 'Values'
  • Select 'Order'
  • In the value data you can now change the order of the links in the start menu. The easier way to find the link names is to open up All Explorer, Smartexplorer, or even browse to the phone via the computer, and look at the files in '\IPSM\Windows\Start Menu'. Don't forget to add '.lnk' at the end of the program name, or it won't work.

If you want any of your own custom links, just make sure you put them in the \IPSM\Windows\Start Menu folder.

  • Now you must reboot your phone for the changes to take effect.

Tweak: Change Your Phone's Name

Posted by David McNamee in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 07:30 AM

The following tweak involves editing your Smartphone's registry. Improperly editing values in the registry could cause unexpected behavior or cause the Smartphone to stop working. For more information on editing the registry, see this post. This tweak is provided as is, with no guarantees as to its effectiveness, or to the safety of using this tweak.

Change the name used to identify your Smartphone.
Instructions provided by Jonny Midnight

Purpose
The Smartphone's name is used by ActiveSync to establish and manage a partnership. Each device that establishes a partnership with a PC must have a unique name. If you synchronize multiple Smartphones with a single PC, it will be necessary to change the name of at least one of those devices. ActiveSync will prompt you to change a device name when attempting to connect to a Smartphone that has the same name as a device already partnered with that PC. If you do not change the device name in this manner, you will need to perform the following tweak.

Instructions
  • Open the registry and find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Ident
  • Select 'Values'
  • Select 'Name'
  • Change the value in the 'Name' key to the new name for your Smartphone
Note that there may be two 'Name' keys. Editing either of them will cause the device name to change.
