Black T-Mobile Dash Now Available

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone News" @ 05:56 PM

hhttp://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phone...bile-Dash-Black

"Last month, some rumors floated around about a new and upcoming T-Mobile Dash (aka the HTC Excalibur) which turned out to be true. However, it's not a completely new T-Mobile Dash but just a color update to the 2006 released T-Mobile Dash. Still not 3G capable, this sleek Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard smartphone keeps you connected with all your E-Mail easily. View and share photos, videos, and attachments or browse the Web. Still available exclusively from T-Mobile, the black T-Mobile Dash, has a soft-touch exterior and full QWERTY keyboard. It still supports quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth and WiFi and also features the now outdated 1.3 megapixel camera. "

It is surprising to see HTC and T-Mobile coming out with a different colored Dash so long after the initial device was released. Granted the Windows Mobile offerings on T-mobile are slim pickings right now, especially in the windows Mobile Standard realm, and anything is better than nothing. It is nice however to see the T-Mobile Dash getting a little bit of love in the news realm as of late.

LEDAlerts: A Nifty Little App That Makes Life a Little Easier

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 08:07 PM

http://www.qorefunctions.com/

"QoreFunctions, makers of the popular PushEffect application for Windows Mobile SmartPhones is pleased to announce the immediate availability of LEDAlerts - Custom LED notifications for your Windows Mobile 6 SmartPhone!"

QoreFunctions LEDAlerts is a pretty cool application that allows you to put those lazy LED lights to good use. With LEDAlerts you can activate your device's LEDs for missed calls and missed reminders as well as new voice mail messages, email messages, SMS messages, and MMS messages. As I said, pretty cool application... unfortunately the only device that is on the market that would make this a useful application is the Samsung Blackjack II which has a ridiculous 7 different color LED lights! Who knew?!

Don't be discouraged though, LEDAlerts is also compatible with the HTC S730, Verizon SMT5800, T-Mobile Dash/S620 though these handsets only have one LED light available for use. You can purchase LEDAlerts from QoreFunctions' website for $12.95USD

My Dash Has Been Made Whole Again

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Smartphone Articles & Resources" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.pocketpctechs.com

I received a very welcome package last week - my T-Mobile Dash, returned to me with a fixed screen, courtesy of PPC Techs. I broke it about a month ago when I accidentally dropped it in a parking lot. The Dash is the best Windows Mobile device I've ever used, so I was missing it as soon as I packed it up and shipped it off for a screen replacement. I received it back late last week (along with a bottle of screen cleaner). Here are a few photos of how it was packaged and what the results were.

Figure 1: The Dash was packaged very securely, surrounded by foam.

Yahoo! Go 2.0 Beta Finally Ready for the Dash

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://mobile.yahoo.com/go

"Yahoo! Go is optimized for the small screen of a mobile phone, making it easy and fun to access the Internet. Everything about the Yahoo! Go interface is designed to be both visually stunning and give you what you want with the fewest clicks possible. At its core is the carousel, used to navigate intuitively among the various Yahoo! Go widgets: your own personal channels for email, local info & maps, news, sports, finance, entertainment, weather, Flickr photos and search. Simply use the carousel to scroll over to the widget you want. Since Yahoo! Go uses advanced caching and background loading technology, your widget content is automatically and continuously pushed to your phone, so its always right there when you want it. You dont need to endure lengthy downloads or navigate loads of links to get to what you want."

User submitted image

Yahoo Go was supposed to be ready for my Dash back in March, then April, then May and so on. Well here we are in July and it's finally ready. It may have been ready for the Blackjack and the Q earlier but I didn't notice. It's less than an 800K download and you can install it on your storage card. So how do I like Yahoo Go? Well, it has a cool interface. It's not the speediest program but has many features. It's a carousel based app that allows you to navigate to certain sections of Yahoo. You can check your calendar, email and address book. You can also look up news, weather, sports, finance, entertainment, and even your Flickr photos. I don't care for the map and directions section of Yahoo Go. With MS Live Search I can enter landmarks and get driving directions. I am yet to be able to do this with Yahoo Go. It's clearly a beta app so use at your own risk. I've already had to soft reset my Dash once because it froze. If you're interested you can download Yahoo Go for free by typing http://us.get.go.yahoo.com into your mobile phone's browser.

The Business-Savvy Smartphone Review: Nokia E62, BlackBerry Pearl, T-Mobile Dash, Palm Treo 750

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 09:40 AM

http://www.cio.com/article/106306/

"Smart devicescall 'em what you will: handhelds, smartphones, PDAsmake business people's lives easier. They help to ensure continuous communication by offering features like calendar applications, instant messaging and e-mail services, cell phone functionality and Web access. Any number of today's smart devices can satisfy the basic needs of the average business user, and plenty of websites can give you consumer-conscious reviews. However, the real challenge for IT executives seeking smartphones for themselves or for their organizations is selecting a device that fits their telecom needs with as few tweaks to the company's IT architectures as possibleand therefore as little time and money expended."

User submitted image

CIO.com has compared four of the most popular smartphones, from the perspective of four experienced IT executives. If you are responsible for managing the IT and deployment of mobile phones in your organisation then this article is a must read. For others I think this is a very good weekend article, it will help you understand the features that the competition is better at. I would like to see more articles like these, it is always good to know how the competition is evolving. There are times when I feel like I have boxed myself into the Windows Mobile platform, and wonder if there is a better alternative out there. Do you get the same feeling at times? Or do you change your smartphone based on features and do not worry about the platform?

Hands-on with T-Mobile's WM6-ified Dash

Posted by Pete Paxton in "ARTICLE" @ 09:00 PM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/05/03/hands-on-with-t-mobiles-wm6-ified-dash/

"Kudos to T-Mobile for rushing (in relative terms) Windows Mobile 6 to its Dash, an honorable move that makes it the first carrier to launch a Windows Mobile 6 device in the US. We've had a chance to run through the re-upped device today, and, well, what can we say: it's a faithful implementation of Windows Mobile 6 Standard. As we've said before, Windows Mobile 6 is an extraordinarily incremental upgrade; the new operating system alone probably doesn't warrant rushing out tomorrow and picking up a shiny new Dash, but for existing owners, we can't think of a better way to close out the week."

User submitted image

I am really excited that the official Dash WM6 update is only a few hours away. So to hold me over til it's here, EngadgetMobile has some great pics of what's to come. I'm so glad the Dash gets first dibs. So for those of you who have waited until the official release, are you going to get it right away or wait to hear feedback from others? As for me? I'll probably fall asleep in my computer chair. Come on, I don't want to waste time walking to my computer

T-Mobile Readying WM 6 Dash Update?

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=4168

"There has been recent activity on message boards speculating that May 4th could be the day that T-Mobile will drop the WM6 ROM upgrade for the T-Mobile Dash... Although unconfirmed, it is hot on the heels of the HTC Europe announcement, so is not unexpected. Anyone out there able to confirm/deny this rumor?"

User submitted image

Is it to be true? Could the Windows Mobile 6 standard (I don't really like that name) upgrade be coming to my cute, soft, and cuddly little T-Mobile Dash within the next two weeks? Pocketnow is hearing rumors and I for one hope they are true. If any of you have any information about this please come forth. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to stare at May 4th on my calendar for a while. :D

Get a Dash Phone for Cheap

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 12:00 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/devmktg/archive/2007/03/19/the-dash-is-now-only-49-99-for-developers.aspx

"This offer is only available through this "secret link". There is a test :-) - the process to get to order is not as simple as we would like it to be, but hey, you are saving a $300 dollars (via rebate): Select "Save on the latest devices from T-Mobile" in the next page select "Click Here for Discounts" then "View Products" and last "Handhelds and PDAs" The $49.99 is only for new activations, does not include activation fee, and only requires a one year commitment, which is pretty good. The better news is that you will be able to upgrade it to Windows Mobile 6 via a sofwtare download soon."

User submitted image

Even though I don't own one, I got to play with one for a few days. I really liked the Dash. You Dash owners are lucky and if you don't have one here is a shot at it pretty cheap! You have to jump through a couple hoops, so start jumping!

Microsoft Officially Announces Windows Mobile 6 and Good News for the Dash Owners

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 07:12 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/feb07/02-11WM6SoftwarePR.mspx

"Microsoft Corp. today unveiled Windows Mobile 6, the newest version of its mobile software platform. By improving usability and adding support for Microsoft Office features previously available only on PCs, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 delivers to the small screen a familiar and rich experience that meets the needs of work and life while on the go, all with a single device. A work force that is both mobile and connected is becoming essential for business success, said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. Thats why were integrating innovative mobile technologies into all our key products, with Windows Mobile as the centerpiece. Windows Mobile 6 delivers the ability to view e-mails in their original rich HTML format with live links to Web and SharePoint sites, which means text and images are displayed as they would be on a PC, and are available from a corporate e-mail server such as Exchange Server 2007, from Web-based accounts such as Windows Live Hotmail or from a myriad of other popular service providers. Windows Mobile 6 also includes Windows Live for Windows Mobile, which provides customers with a rich set of Windows Live services. For example, now through Windows Live Messenger, people can chat with more than one person at one time, express themselves through animated figures, quickly send a file or image, or record and send voice notes."

User submitted image

Even though Windows Mobile 6 was sort of announced officially last week, it is now really official. Microsoft has released the mandatory press release to make things official and here is the best part - "And in the United States, the popular T-Mobile Dash will be updated with Windows Mobile 6 and be available in the coming months. Current T-Mobile Dash owners will also be able to upgrade existing devices with Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6." It's party time for the Dash users. Read about the press release over here and check out the new Windows Mobile 6 Web site over here.

Windows Mobile 6 Coming for T-Mobile Dash

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.phonenews.com/content/view/1824/1/

"Reports from HowardForums members indicate that the T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur) will be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6 (also known as Windows Mobile Crossbow). These reports come from T-Mobile Engineering, the sector responsible for testing and approving updates for devices. T-Mobile representatives declined an opportunity to comment."

User submitted image

Nothing solid to go on here, but I have a very strong hunch this is accurate. Great news for T-Mobile Dash owners (I count myself among them, it's an awesome device).

T-Mobile Dash Crosses the Atlantic to Become the MDA Mail

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 06:40 PM

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news2977.html

"The T-Mobile Dash has been available in the USA for quite a while now, so it's good to see that it'll soon be available back in Europe as the T-Mobile MDA Mail. Made by HTC, it's known as the HTC Excalibur and comes with a full QWERTY keyboard, 1.3 Megapixel camera, Stereo Bluetooth, quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GPRS/EDGE, MicroSD and WiFi. The T-Mobile MDA Mail will run Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone, so although there's always-on email etc, you'll not be able to edit Word / Excel documents on this device. There is though the innovative JOGGR strip on the side for easy navigation."

User submitted image

Important details like the launch date and price are not available at this time, but the important thing is that our friends across the pond will soon be able to enjoy this wonderful device. I believe the Internet data plans are pretty pricey in Europe, which makes this device even more attractive for our European friends because the Wi-Fi works great on this device. 8)

PC World Includes the T-Mobile Dash in the 20 Most Innovative Products of the Year

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 04:30 PM

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,128176-page,4-c,electronics/article.html

"The slim Motorola Q brought a usable QWERTY keyboard to Windows Mobile smart phones--and then the T-Mobile Dash came along and got the rest of the package right. Combining a stylish, superthin design with sculpted keys that correct the deficiencies we found on the Q, and offering both cellular service and integrated wireless capabilities, the Dash makes a great impression. You also get a 1.3-megapixel camera and a miniSD slot for expansion in this 4.2-ounce handset, and it's an affordable $250 with a two-year contract. Our minor pet peeves: The device's software bundle isn't as robust as that of some of its competitors, and its built-in user-accessible memory is a paltry 23MB."

User submitted image

Personally I want to gloat about the fact that I am one of the proud owners of a T-Mobile Dash, and how happy I am that it beat the Moto Q and the Samsung BlackJack. I don't want to come across as an insensitive person, so I would like to take this opportunity to ask our readers which is the best model of the year?

T-Mobile Dash, HTC S620, Review

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/phones/T-Mobile-Dash.htm

"It's been a very good year for PDA and smartphones, and it's still not over yet! This Fall we've seen the introduction of two of my favorite phones, the Cingular 8525 and the T-Mobile Dash. Though each share a QWERTY keyboard and base Windows Mobile 5 software, the 8525 and its HTC-branded sibling the TyTN run Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition and are quite large in comparison, albeit more powerful. The Dash and HTC S620 run Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone Edition which means they lack touch screens, the Notes component of Outlook and Microsoft's own MS Office Mobile applications which allow both viewing and editing of Word and Excel documents."

For those of you celebrating Thanksgiving, have a happy one! Here is another review of one of the more popular new Smartphones. It also has a comparison shot alongside some other devices. You can read it in between mouthfuls of turkey. :)

T-Mobile Dash Receives the Geek.Com's Pick Rating

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2006Nov/rev20061114040409.htm

"The Chief Geek loves him some phones, and his latest device of choice is the T-Mobile Dash, a Windows Mobile-sporting, QWERTY-keyboard-toting, awesome screen-having, Wi-Fi-enabled beauty with a nice feel and a remarkably thin profile. Since he was at Mobius Thailand recently, a lot of smartphones have passed through the Chief Geek's hands lately, yet the Dash impressed him so much he gave it an easy Geek.com Pick. Check out the review to see why."

User submitted image

Another review praising the T-Mobile Dash. :D I am eagerly waiting for a head to head review of the recently announced Samsung BlackJack and the T-Mobile Dash.

T-Mobile Dash vs. Motorola Q

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 06:00 AM

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11396_7-6651459-1.html?tag=hed

"When it first debuted, the Motorola Q was undoubtedly a knockout. The Windows Mobile device was sleek and sexy, unlike any other smart phone before it, and generally delivered on performance. However, when you're sitting there at the top, there's always going to be someone who wants to knock you down, and let's just say the T-Mobile Dash is ready for a fight."

User submitted image

Kris, I'm not sure but I think we thought of this format first! The Dash frenzy continues and I'm getting a little tired of this unabashed love fest. I mean come on now people. It's just a phone!

How To Configure Volume Jogger for Scrolling On T-Mobile Dash

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:30 PM

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1029394&page=1&pp=15

Well that sure didn't take long. Just 1 day after the Dash hit the streets, akil, staulkor, and some others over at Howard Forums has found a way to change the functionality of the volume jogger on the Dash to include scrolling and launching programs. You'll need to modify the registry to get this to work. So, make sure you back things up before making any changes. Here are the changes you need to make to get this working.

To Enable Scrolling:
 HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\SwitchToAudioFunc = 0

Tap on Bottom Key Launches IE Mobile:
 HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\BottomKeyApplicationName = \Windows\iexplore.exe

Tap on Top Key Performs Back
 HKCU\ControlPanel\JobBar\Settings\TopKeyApplicationName = BACK

You can replace any these with your favourite applications. Other common applications would be START (to Launch the Start menu), \Windows\tmail.exe to launch Outlook Mobile, or http://www.SmartphoneThoughts.com to launch IE Mobile with your favourite website ;) Let us know how you make out!

HTC and T-Mobile's "Dine and Dash" Event, Featuring the T-Mobile Dash

Posted by Janak Parekh in "EVENT" @ 04:00 PM

This morning, T-Mobile officially announced the Dash, their version of the HTC Excalibur Smartphone, at a "Dine and Dash" PR event in SoHo. I had the opportunity to be at the press event, and so am assuming Guest Editorship at Smartphone Thoughts to have you join me inside for a brief look!

User submitted image
Figure 1: Entrance to the Mercer Kitchen.

The event was held at the Mercer Kitchen, a trendy restaurant on Prince Street in SoHo. They had rented out half of the lower floor for the 60 or so journalists and reporters that showed up for a breakfast at 8:30am. (I've gotta admit, this is the earliest PR I've ever been to...)

User submitted image
Figure 2: The event was downstairs; a nice banner was placed in the stairwell.

I had the opportunity to talk to several folks from HTC, T-Mobile, Microsoft, and Waggener Edstrom, the PR agency who represents all three, about the Dash -- it's very clear that they're excited about this device, and even more so, they're interested in targeting the consumer space with it. This is a huge departure from most RIM and earlier Windows Mobile devices, and the $199 price point (with 2 year contract) reinforces that idea. The device will be in stores on October 25th.

User submitted image
Figure 3: Downstairs space. Very big and lounge-y.

User submitted image
Figure 4: Behind my table, there were these crabgrass installations. The T-Mobile and HTC folks decided to spruce it up. Those "cell phones", by the way, are actually boxes of mints. ;)

I ordered pancakes for breakfast and proceeded to sit down for the beginning of the PR event. T-Mobile's and HTC's PR heads spoke for a few minutes each, and stressed the importance of this partnership and the significance of the T-Mobile Dash. HTC, whose PR head is, as he put it, an "Australian in New York representing a Taiwanese company", is clearly making a big branding effort. I'm very happy to see this, and along with the HTC/Cingular "Smart Meets Sexy" event in New York just a short while ago, highlights their commitment.

User submitted image
Figure 5: Sitting down for breakfast.

(By the way, I'd have taken a picture of both of the gentlemen, but they were right behind my chair, and I didn't want to blind them while they were speaking.)

User submitted image
Figure 6: Everyone enjoying breakfast. Folks from all types of media, including mainstream magazines, were there.

It was clear that this event, like the Cingular one a few weeks ago, is clearly intended for the mainstream media. There were reporters and columnists from major magazines sitting right next to me at the table. There also seemed to be agreement that the T-Mobile Dash's form factor has potential to gain mass market acceptance.

User submitted image
Figure 7: And look what I have!

User submitted image
Figure 8: Comparison shot between the behemoth of a Treo 700w and the sleek-and-sexy Dash.

Even better, I now have an T-Mobile Dash unit. :D The last two pics are teasers from a review I'm frantically writing up and will probably post tomorrow. Immediate impressions: the unit is incredibly slim and extremely comfortable to hold in your hand. It feels a lot like the iPAQ 19xx and 41xx Pocket PCs, but possibly a bit narrower, and with a rubbery grip on the back. Pictures don't do the styling justice -- I think it looks quite professional in the hand. The screen is incredibly sharp and with excellent contrast, and the keys are tactile and reasonably-sized given the slim form factor. Overall, I think this will be a winner for T-Mobile. I've got lots more details coming tomorrow -- stay tuned!

Janak Parekh is completing his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science at Columbia University in New York. When he's not working on his thesis or playing with PDAs and Smartphones, you're more likely to find him asleep than anything else.
