Windows CE Targets VoIP Market With LG-Nortel Deal

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.networkingpipeline.com/news/188501312

"Microsoft is continuing its slow assault on the VoIP market by signing a new deal with LG-Nortel to work together on VoIP products based on the next generation of WinCE. LG-Nortel is a joint venture between Nortel and cell phone manufacturer LG Electronics. The deal between Microsoft and LG-Nortel is a memorandum of understanding (MOU) covering joint research and development, marketing, and licensing for WinCE 6."

Well this is some interesting news. So, Windows CE 6 will have VoIP support. Since Windows Mobile is built on-top of Windows CE, does that mean we might just see some VoIP action in the next major release of Windows Mobile? I'm sure it's no surprise that it would be possible, but I didn't really expect Microsoft to make it part of the foundation. Good news for the future of our platform. :D

Fandango Signs Movie Ticket Deal with Cingular

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 09:45 AM

http://news.com.com/Fandango+sells+ticket+deal+to+Cingular/2100-1039_3-6050315.html?tag=fd_nbs_ent&tag=nl.e703

"Fandango, the online movie-ticket seller, will expand its service by adding Cingular Wireless to its roster of cellular partners. Earlier this month, Fandango, which had relied solely upon selling movie tickets via the Internet, began its migration away from the computer by entering a partnership with Sprint Nextel. Other existing partners include TiVo, Tribune Media Services and Amazon's IMDb.com. "Moviegoers are often attached at the hip to their mobile devices," Fandango CEO Art Levitt said Thursday, adding that the service's traffic has doubled from month to month."

Well, well, well; Isn't that special. You can buy your tickets using your cell phone, but don't you dare try to use that cell phone around the theaters.

AT&T in $67 Billion Deal to Buy BellSouth

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/05/AR2006030500501.html

"AT&T Inc. announced plans yesterday to buy BellSouth Corp. for about $67 billion in stock in a deal that would reassemble large swaths of the old "Ma Bell" local-telephone monopoly but is likely to win regulatory approval because of growing competition from mobile phone, cable and Internet telephone companies. The merger would dramatically expand San Antonio-based AT&T, which is already the largest phone company in the country, by extending its local-phone service into 22 states and giving it full control of Cingular Wireless, the largest mobile phone company in the nation."

Just the sound of those 3 letters makes me shudder. They represent immobility that led to failure. Yet they are touted as a divine moniker that everyone will just flock to when they see it. Just like walking into the light. I am disappointed that they are resurrecting this dinosaur name. The article points out they will dump the Cingular name, a name I happen to like. The real question is will this buyout be good for customers in the end?

Audiovox Corporation Finalizes UTStarcom Deal

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 07:30 AM

http://www.corporate-ir.net/ireye/ir_site.zhtml?ticker=VOXX&script=410&layout=-6&item_id=692619

"Audiovox Corporation announced today that it has received the final escrow payment and the remaining balance of outstanding net working capital adjustments associated with the sale of its cellular subsidiary's business, Audiovox Communications Corp. to UTStarcom, Inc. One Hundred percent of the escrow was paid, as there were no disputes or adjustments to the transaction."

I guess this means that the stage is clear for the launch of the popular SMT5600 on the Cingular network as the UTStarcom SMT5600 in May. :-)

Sprint To Buy Nextel In $36 Billion Deal

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.sprintnextel.mergerannouncement.com/

"Sprint Corp. said on Wednesday it would buy mobile telephone company Nextel Communications Inc. for about $36 billion, creating a U.S. wireless carrier with nearly 40 million subscribers. The combination of the No. 3 and No. 5 U.S. wireless services narrows the gap with industry leaders Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless and allows Sprint and Nextel to cut costs and pool assets such as airwaves. It comes a month after Cingular completed its $41 billion purchase of AT&T Wireless that vaulted it past Verizon Wireless to become the biggest U.S. mobile provider. Executives of Sprint and Nextel said the complementary strengths of the two companies would help the combined company -- Sprint Nextel -- be a strong competitor."

User submitted image

It's official, Sprint and Nextel have made the joint statement announcing the merger plans. The combined company will be called Sprint Nextel and the deal is expected to close in the second half of 2005. I was reading the WSJ article on this deal and it mentioned that Nextel will operate the iDEN networks through 2007. It also stated that "Motorola will continue to play a role in the new company". I wonder what will have happen to the Smartphone, Nextel was planning on launching early 2005 or so, the Motorola i930? :?

Sprint And Nextel Reach Tentative Merger Deal

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 09:45 AM

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=7058934

"Sprint Corp. is close to an agreement buy Nextel Communications Inc. for more than $36 billion in a mostly stock deal that would combine the No. 3 and No. 5 U.S. wireless telephone companies, sources familiar with the situation said on Friday. A Sprint-Nextel merger would face some expensive technology hurdles due to the incompatible wireless systems used in their networks, analysts said. Still, the companies still would benefit by gaining more wireless spectrum to transmit calls and a more diverse customer base."

Looks like the merger talks have been moving at a rapid pace. 8O The following quote from the recent Wall Street Journal article explains why both the companies are eager to merge: "The carrier (Nextel) has two big problem, and a deal with Sprint would help solve them: It needs more radio-wave spectrum, the valuable airwaves that cellular operators use to transmit calls. And it needs to switch it to an entirely new network technology to keep up with competitors offering services like high speed web browsing. For Sprint, which has been struck waging price wars in the middle of the wireless pack, the deal would make it nearly as large as its bigger wireless competitors, lowering its costs as it embarks on a multi billion dollar plan to upgrade its own network." So what are your thoughts on the merger?

T-Mobile Signs Six Carriers to Wi-Fi Roaming Deal

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1724025,00.asp?kc=EWRSS03129TX1K0000605

"SAN FRANCISCOT-Mobile's wireless division said Wednesday that it has signed partnership agreements with six other wireless carriers, allowing single sign-on services to 11 countries around the globe."

I use T-Mobile hotspots all the time at airports (like right now) and Starbucks. I like to see that it is expanding even more. :)

FCC Approves Cingular - AT&T Deal

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/344/C3346/

"The FCC today has approved the $40.7 billion cash acquisition Cingular Wireless submitted for the purchase of AT&T back in February. Several conditions were given to Cingular in respects to the deal, they are required to sell AT&T Wireless operating units and associated airwaves in 16 markets and 10MHz airwaves in Dallas and Detroit. The also agreed that in the January airwaves auction, Cingular may not bid on any markets that would allow them to control or have greater than 10 percent or greater interest in 70 MHz of airwaves. Reuters has the full story."

Now that everyone has granted their approval, it's time to merge! Anyone care to guess on when the merger will be completed? Or what they might choose for a new name or logo? I think Cingular should replace that dot on the top of their current logo with AT&T's blue globe. 8)

Justice Department OKs Cingular - AT&T Deal

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 05:30 AM

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/ap/20041026/ap_on_bi_ge/cingular_at_t_wireless

"Justice Department antitrust regulators cleared the way Monday for Cingular Wireless LLC's $41 billion acquisition of AT&T Wireless Services Inc., a crucial step toward creating the nation's largest wireless telephone company. The merger still must be approved by the Federal Communications Commission. That could come as early as Tuesday."

One more hurdle to go...

Operators Team Up To Deal With Handset Makers

Posted by David McNamee in "NEWS" @ 08:41 PM

http://www.enn.ie/news.html?code=9540578

A number of mobile operators have formed a working group to lobby mobile phone handset makers for features that serve the best interests of the operators and their customers. The group, called the Open Mobile Terminal Platform Alliance (OMTPA), includes: TIM, Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile, Smart and NTT DoCoMo. Analysts expect the group will push for standards on technologies such as MMS. This makes sense: customers want communications features to work with whomever they are trying to communicate - even if that person is on a different network.

Cingular and T-Mobile Exit Deal

Posted by David McNamee in "NEWS" @ 08:00 PM

http://news.com.com/Cingular%2C+T-Mobile+sever+joint+venture/2100-1039_3-5219679.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=news

Due, in part, to Cingular's pending acquisition of AT&T Wireless, Cingular and T-Mobile are ending a multi-year infrastructure agreement. The agreement helped Cingular enter the New York wireless market, and brought T-Mobile into California and Nevada.

Under the break-up agreement, T-Mobile will purchase spectrum in San Francisco, Sacramento and Las Vegas, with an option to purchase additional spectrum in two years in San Diego and Los Angeles. Cingular will receive additional spectrum in New York.

I'm not certain who makes out better in this deal, but it seems that Cingular is trying to get its network arranged for the AT&T Wireless takeover.

AT&T To Re-Enter Wireless Market After Cingular/AT&T Deal Closes

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/nm/20040518/tc_nm/telecoms_sprint_att_dc

"AT&T Corp., the leading U.S. long distance telephone company, will offer mobile phone service later this year using Sprint Corp.'s network, AT&T said on Tuesday. Cingular Wireless , part-owned by SBC, agreed to buy AT&T Wireless Services Inc. in February. AT&T was testing the possibility of re-entering the mobile industry in a few markets through a partnership with AT&T Wireless when the Cingular deal raised the prospect that it could instead reclaim its old brand. ...AT&T will be able to sell mobile services under its own brand again after the close of the Cingular/AT&T Wireless deal, expected to happen in the fourth quarter. AT&T could begin offering mobile service before then as long as it does not use the AT&T Wireless brand. "

If this doesn't confuse the customer, I don't know what will.

Motorola Rolls Dice on Microsoft Deal

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THOUGHT" @ 11:40 AM

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=11631

"Motorola needed Microsoft because its own operating software wasnt ready and it couldnt afford to miss the market shift to smart phones. Microsoft needed Motorola as a foothold in the wireless market, a key new growth front for the company.

...New Motorola CEO Edward Zander, a veteran of Microsoft archrival Sun Microsystems Inc., knows the risks. Hes betting that Motorolas software will be ready for the mass market before Windows attracts a wireless following, and that he can spin away from Microsoft intact."

Motorola has spent a lot of time and energy building and marketing their handsets. I find it hard to believe that it was only meant to fill time. Why choose Microsoft and give them a leg up? Motorola has Symbian devices, and until recently, they had a 19% share in Symbian. So why not just keep using Symbian until your OS is ready? This just doesn't sound right to me and I hope it's not true. Motorola has brought the best designed hardware that we've seen in a long time. It would be a shame if the partnership ended so early.

Cingular/AT&T Deal: Is Verizon the Real Winner?

Posted by David McNamee in "NEWS" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_09/b3872045.htm

Business Week seems to think that Verizon could be the big winner of Cingular's purchase of AT&T Wireless. By jumping in at the last minute, Verizon Wireless partner Vodafone helped to increase Cingular's purchase price of AT&T Wireless. Add to this the cost of integrating the two networks and the nine months expected to complete the transaction and Verizon looks like it could be in good shape to build upon its current standing as the top U.S. cellular service provider. It could also drag Cingular's parents, BellSouth and SBC into the mess, helping Verizon out in its land line business.
