Details on HTC's Big June 5th Announcement

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:30 AM

We've already talked about the big upcoming announcement from HTC. I've received an anonymous tip that outlined what the launch is all about. In the past my source has always been right. So there's no reason for me to question the information I was handed. On June 5th, HTC is expected to announce a new Windows Mobile device based on the Elf platform. However, this Elf will have a very special feature. HTC has done a great job of keeping this special feature a secret. This special Elf will have a multitouch display like the iphone. So you will be able to slide your finger across the screen to run commands and interact with the device in the same manner as Apples much hyped iphone. HTC will be launching this on a global scale, so it has the potential to reach a large audience in a short amount of time. It should be an interesting year ahead. What are your thoughts?

More Details Emerge on the Mythical Google Phone

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/06/more-details-emerge-on-the-mythical-google-phone/

"Now that the iPhone has moved from rumor limbo into the land of the living (at least we think so -- how many people have actually touched one?), we obviously need another mythical mobile to drool over and speculate about -- and the natural candidate is, of course, the so-called Google phone. While the big G has been making inroads on your handset with mobile versions of its search, email, and mapping software for some time, there has been growing speculation that the company is working on its own hardware -- speculation that only intensified when we published that pic of a supposed Google / Samsung collaboration called the Switch..."

I hope Google does make this phone, I really do. I haven't had anything to bash since the MPx220 and this would go beyond my wildest dreams. Beta jokes aside, I say we begin a petition to encourage Google to make this turkey. The resulting comedy would be well worth it. Maybe we could take up a collection?

Kevin Rose Shares iPhone Details

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.mobilitysite.com/2006/12/iphone_leak_by_kevin_rose.php

Kevin Rose has let some details slip about the upcoming iPhone from Apple. We've heard about this phone for the last year and change, but it finally sounds like they might be making progress. However, the specs don't sound like anything special to me. From what Kevin said, it will be available on all 3 of the major networks, it's really small, slideout keyboard, touch screen, flash memory, and 2 batteries - one for music and the other for the phone. There will be a 4 and 8 GB version of the phone and it will sell for $249 and $449 respectively.

I don't know about you, but this doesn't really excite me. Aside from 2 batteries, which would add some serious bulk, I don't see anything that's ground breaking. MobilitySite has the YouTube video linked up. Give it a watch and let us know your thoughts.

More Details on the Upcoming SPV C600 from Orange

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 07:15 AM

http://www.smartphonefrance.info/actu.asp?ID=3060

User submitted image

Smartphone France has managed to dig up more information on the Orange SPV c600 Smartphone. Back in July, Smartphone France posted a photocopied image of this device, and now they can offer a nice colour image. :) Here's what we know so far; The device will weight 105 grams, with a 1.3 MP camera, a 320x240 QVGA screen, and running Windows Mobile 5.0. It is also expected to have EDGE support and maintain the C500's exceptional battery with a 4 hour talk time and 7 day standby battery. There is no word on when it will be released, but I think it would safe to say that it is coming out sometime between now and the end of October - based on when devices have been released in the past. Orange C600 - Next Generation Windows Mobile Smartphone Details Leaked

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 01:07 PM

http://www.smartphonefrance.info/actu.asp?ID=2968

User submitted image

We just finished seeing the launch of the C550 from Orange and we already have a peak at what's next from the leader in Windows Mobile devices. The rumors are saying that this new device will be called the SPV C600 - not much of a surprise there. It will weight in at 105 grams, measure 108x46x19mm, a 320x240 screen with 65K colours, 1.3 Mega Pixel camera, and have GPRS and EDGE compatibility. It's unknown what version of Windows Mobile this will have. However, I think Windows Mobile 5.0 is a safe guess. It also sports a real joystick and not the rocket switch that the C500/Audiovox SMT5600 has. I'm more than a little disappointed that there is no WiFi on this model. I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever see a Smartphone with WiFi. :? While this looks like a great phone, does it really offer enough to make you want to upgrade?

More Details On Samsung Thor / i300

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:17 PM

http://www.mobile-review.com/exhibition/cebit-samsung-2005-en.shtml

"Samsung has demonstrated a model called i300 at the exhibition. Earlier it was known under a project name of Samsung Thor and we wrote about it in January. That is the first announced Windows Mobile Magneto based smartphone by the company. The model is a step forward in the platform development. It possesses some functions other manufacturers won't announce in their models till the end of the year. An integrated hard 3GB drive (considering the dimensions of the device that is Microdrive) and a rotational wheel instead of a joystick. The camera is 1.3 megapixel and that is not the maximum value, the products of this class will be equipped with 2-megapixel matrixes with automatic focus by the end of the year."

More details on the Samsung Thor device has hit the net. We got our first glimpse of this device back in January when the rumors first leaked out. At the time, we didn't know very much, but that's all changed now. Thor will be called the i300 and will be GSM based. The specs appear to be as follows: Bluetooth, USB 2.0, 113 x 48 x 20mm, 130 grams, a 320x240 screen, 3GB microdrive, and it will be running Windows Mobile Magneto. I never expected to say this about Samsung, but  8) Check out the linked article for more pictures and information on this, and other new Samsung devices.

Update: Engadget has a couple live action pictures of this device, and they are reporting that it will support playback of MP3, WMA, AAC, and AAC+. 8)

Update #2: Gizmodo is reporting that this device will play back media in the above mentioned formats, as well as OGG. 8O

More Details On The Orange C500

Posted by David McNamee in "HARDWARE" @ 06:09 PM

http://msmobilenews.com/?cid=532

MSMobileNews has posted detailed specs on the Orange SPV C500. The specs are pretty close to what was rumored earlier. The phone is a GSM tri-band running on 900/1800/1900. It has 64MB or RAM, a camera and Bluetooth. It is also running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Plus the thing is very small. I mean really, really, looks-like-a-fashion-phone small. Take a look at this picture:

This phone could appeal to a whole new group of people who hadn't really considered a Smartphone before. I can just hear people saying, "what a cute little phone," when this gets pulled from someone's pocket. And as we all know - cute sells!

More Details on Motorola's Linux Based Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THE COMPETITION" @ 02:26 PM

http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS3664493962.html

"Unlike the earlier Motorola A-760, which launched last fall, the A768 (Click images for larger views) includes full video services capabilities such as video capturing, playback, and download through GPRS/CSD.

The A768 also provides VPN support for access to corporate data, a PDA, Web brower, Email, MMS, SMS, and viewers for PDFs and various Microsoft Office file formats. Its phone software uses the GSM protocol. Like the earlier A760, the A768 is based on MontaVista Linux."

User submitted image

""Handset manufacturers, such as Motorola, are turning to the fast emerging mobile Linux OS as a platform for phone development because of the flexibility, control, and innovation offered by open source software," commented MontaVista CEO Jim Ready."

Is that why Motorola is expected to release 3 more Windows Mobile based devices this year bringing the total to 4, while this would be the second Linux based device? Fast, ya right.

Details on Microsoft, Vodafone Alliance

Posted by Robert Levy in "NEWS" @ 12:07 AM

http://www.sdtimes.com/news/091/emb1.htm

A while back, we talked about an alliance being formed between Microsoft and Vodafone to come up with a standardized set of APIs for mobile web services. These mobile web services are tools that developers can leverage to connect desktop PCs and mobile phones together for things such as billing and text messaging. I just came across an article in this week's SD Times newspaper which talks more about this and what it means. Fortunately, SD Times archives all of their articles online so you all can check it out here.

"Microsoft Corp. and Vodafone Group Services Ltd. in late October published a technical road map detailing their plans to expose mobile services to desktop applications. The outline, which according to Microsoft has generated interest from an unspecified list of major industry players, also is being viewed by one analyst as a potential cash cow for what already is one of the worlds richest companies.

Nick Jones, a vice president in Gartner Inc.s research group, believes that on its face, theres value in such a proposal. People are trying to push mobile phones into being more of a general business accessory. That means that the mobile network is already charging people for things other than phone calls. So if we have a secure connection between a PC and mobile network, then suddenly the PC can make charges to somebodys mobile phone bill. So it would be useful for Windows PCs to access network services and create apps that deal with mobile devices more easily."

User submitted imageEarlier today we linked to Gizmodo's information on the new i930 Smartphone from Motorola which Nextel is planning to sell. Modaco Reveals Details on Voyager (a.k.a. SPV2)

Posted by Jason Dunn in "HARDWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?p=253350

"The HTC Voyager *looks* (in prototype form at least) just like a Tanager, but has an integrated camera and bluetooth. The prototype devices are running a pre-RTM build of the forthcoming update to the SmartPhone OS, often referred to as 'SmartPhone 2003', although the branding is likely to change to 'Windows Mobile 2003 for SmartPhone' before launch time (in line with the recent update to the Pocket PC Operating System).

The integrated bluetooth will be a relief to many current SPV owners, and is made possible by the fact that the SmartPhone 2003 base level OS is likely to include native bluetooth support, as in Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, as well as a number of other benefits, such as in ROM .NET Compact Framework, as recently demo'd at Microsoft's 'Tech Ed Europe' event."

Wow. 8O Based on specs alone, this makes the release of the E-100 (Tanager) a non-event. Everyone, myself included, is going to want this phone. Camera? Bluetooth? Come to pappa! 8)
