Windows Mobile Set to Invade MIDs

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC News" @ 10:35 AM

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1276

"Microsoft has brought on a new hire - a former founding member of Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie's Iris Associates - to help the Redmond software company port the Windows Mobile operating system to new form factors. Len Kawell, whose title is "Distinguished Engineer in the Mobile Communications Business Group," is charged with "defining the application model for occasionally connected rich Internet applications in the mobile environment," according to his biography on Microsoft’s Web site. Kawell is also working on scaling Windows Mobile to "new kinds of devices with larger screens and faster processors - also known as Mobile Internet Devices, or MIDS," his bio adds. Microsoft hasn't talked much (if at all) publicly about MIDS; instead, the company has been championing ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs) as the form factor most likely to occupy the space between notebooks/Tablets and cell phones. But Microsoft’s processor pal Intel has been touting both UMPCs and MIDS. Intel distinguishes the two by noting that MIDS tend to be smaller (five-inch screen size) and not providing the ability to monitor "office apps.""

Windows Mobile on a phone? Great. Windows Mobile on a Mobile Internet Device (MID)? I'm not sold. Part of the appeal of an MID is its larger, high-res display, and if the hardware and software are integrated well, it should provide that advertised rich Internet experience. Now, these devices have been shown to work great with Windows and Linux, and because these operating systems offer a great set of browsers, frameworks, and plug-ins, they usually have no problems delivering that core experience. What about Windows Mobile? It's instant-on and favours batteries a little better, which is great for a device of this form factor. However, plain and simple, Internet Explorer Mobile sucks, and most of you know it. Microsoft can't possibly use this as a selling point for an MID. There would need to be radical changes to the browser in order for it to be successful. Otherwise, you'd be better off sticking with an iPhone or iPod touch. Smaller screen size, but at least Safari is a heck of a lot better at rendering pages big and small.

VPN From Your Windows Mobile Device

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS8603636813.html

"NCP Engineering has added Windows Mobile 6.0 device support to its mobile IPsec Virtual Private Network (VPN) client. Secure Entry CE Client verison 2.3x supports the Standard, Classic, and Professional variants of Windows Mobile 6, according to the company. The combination of a configuration wizard on the host PC and an intuitive graphical interface on the mobile device is said to enable "simple and convenient" installation by the user. In operation, the mobile user works in "exactly the same manner" as on an office workstation. In the event of connection interruption, or when changing WLAN access points, intelligent connection management prevents data loss with no need for user intervention, the company adds."

I'm not sure how big the demand for this is. I'm sure that there are some people that would be interested in it, and some of those people might actually use it. But for the most part, I would have to think that it is a pretty small part of the Windows Mobile market. Regardless, if you've been looking to VPN, you might want to give NCPs VPN a try.

Palm's Gandolf - A Windows Mobile Standard Device?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:13 PM

http://digital-lifestyles.info/2007/06/11/palm-gandolf-phone-rumours/

"Going under the code name of the Palm Gandolf, the Palm version is rumoured to debut on Sprint later this year for a cheap-as-chips retail price of $200 and pack EVDO (rev. A), full QWERTY keyboard and integrated camera, Bluetooth and a Micro SD expansion slot. The Windows version (seen here in a rather dashing white finish), is said to run Windows Mobile Standard (formerly WM Smartphone edition) and comes with a 320240 display - a big improvement on their current Windows phone, the Treo 750."

User submitted image

There's a lot of news floating around about Palm working on a Smartphone device called the Gandolf. I don't know that I'm behind this rumour too much. It's my guess that this is actually a Professional device. Besides, the design is kind of boring and dull if you ask me.

Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for Windows Vista - It Includes File Synchronizing!

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 10:30 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx

"The Windows Mobile Device Center enables you to set up new partnerships, synchronize content and manage music, pictures and video with Windows Mobile powered devices (Windows Mobile 2003 or later). The Windows Mobile Device Center combines an efficient business-data synchronization platform with a compelling user experience. The Windows Mobile Device Center helps you to quickly set up new partnerships, synchronize business-critical information such as e-mail, contacts and calendar appointments, easily manage your synchronization settings, and transfer business documents between your device and PC."

User submitted image

Yay! We can now synchronize our smartphone files with Windows Vista! This includes touch screen and non-touch screen devices. It's about time this came out. And while we all realize this should have been included in the Device Center from the start, kudos to Microsoft for at least getting it out now. Ok, I'm off to download so I can be in synchronize heaven. :D

Microsoft Promises Fix for File Synchronization on Vista's Windows Mobile Device Center

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 04:40 AM

http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13033

Recently we had reported that Windows Mobile 6 supports file synchronization. However, this feature is available only for Windows XP - ActiveSync 4.5 users. Users of the latest and greatest Windows operating system, Windows Vista, cannot make use of this awesome Windows Mobile 6 feature. Lot of our readers and numerous smartphone related Web sites have expressed their outrage. And now, Brighthand has received confirmation from Microsoft stating that Windows Vista users will soon be able to enjoy this feature via an update to Windows Mobile Device Center. Personally, I am a bit annoyed that Microsoft didn't contact us with their official statement. :(

The official Microsoft statement on the issue:
Microsoft via Brighthand said: "Currently, Windows Mobile 6 users can synchronize files between PCs and smartphones with Active Sync 4.5. Microsoft will update Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) on Windows Vista PCs to support file synchronization with Windows Mobile 6 by mid-June. We appreciate our customers continuing to use ActiveSync 4.5 for file synchronization until this update is available and are looking forward to offering the WMDC synchronize option very soon."

Sprite Wipe to Offer Remote Wipe and Device Tracking

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=7093

"Currently under beta testing, Sprite Mobile Swipe works on any Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC or Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone, and once installed, hides away in the background until activated by the device's owner. The software cannot be uninstalled without a user selected password. If the device is ever lost, simply send a SMS from a previously specified partner phone and you can have the device locked. You can also go one step further, and send a wipe text message that will erase the entire contents of the phone, including everything on the memory card. If, on the other hand, your phone is stolen, and the thief changes the SIM card, you will automatically get a SMS on the designated partner phone so the user will know the new number."

User submitted image

There are a couple tools on the market that already do this, so it's nothing revolutionary. However, it is good to see a company like Sprite expand their Mobile offerings. I think Sprite has the best chance of making a product with the widest device support, and best integration due to their indepth knowledge of backing up Windows Mobile devices.

Microsoft Release Windows Mobile Device Emulator 2.0

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:17 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2007/03/13/microsoft-device-emulator-v2-0-released.aspx

"Following Microsoft's earlier launch of the Windows Mobile 6 SDK, the Windows Mobile team has now released the Microsoft Device Emulator 2.0, which is the second publicly released version of the Device Emulator for ARM-based Devices. This emulator is also being released with the Windows Mobile 6 SDK and the Adaptation Kit (AK) releases of Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Embedded CE 6.0. The Microsoft Device Emulator can be downloaded free of charge from Microsoft."

Woohoo! I have been waiting for Microsoft to release this for a while now. As most people know, I am one of the most impatient human beings on the face of the planet... well, at least when it comes to new toys I am. If you are like me and have been looking to get your hands on the Windows Mobile 6 operating system before all of those fancy new handsets are released, now is your chance! :D

How To Change the Icon in Windows Mobile Device Center

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 11:30 AM

http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-i730-i830-i830w/85310-vista-windows-mobile-device-center-picture-icon-hack.html

"I watched a few of the online videos demonstrating the WMDC and in one of them it was mentioned that OEMs (the people who release the devices) are capable of switching the graphic to a "custom" graphic. I immediately searched the web trying to find information on how to change the graphic. Nothing was found, just the fact the "OEMs can change the graphic". So next I searched the PC for any indication of the image..."

User submitted image

mrailing over at PDAPhoneHome.com has figured out how to change the device icon that shows up in Vista's Windows Mobile Device Center. I did this with my Blackjack and I got the new icon to show in Explorer, but not in WMDC until after I rebooted my laptop. I figured that all of you would be very interested in knowing and trying out this info. Please report back and let us know how it went for you. :)

Would You Pay More for a Device - If it Offered an OS Upgrade?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THOUGHT" @ 12:00 PM

Mauricio has posted a nice rant over at GeekZone about the upgradability (is that even a word?) of our devices. He brings up a lot of good points, and as we are all aware, the operators don't seem to like to go down the upgrade path. This brings up an interesting thought that I've had tumbling around in my head while I was on vacation last week. I would gladly pay a premium for a device if I was assured that it would get at least 1 OS upgrade. Would you? Heres a hypothetical situation for you. Think about it and vote Yes or No in the poll. Be sure to share your thoughts on it in the forums too.

Lets say you could buy a Windows Mobile Smartphone that had all the bells and whistles you could ask for. In fact it was more than the average device on the market. Lets say its 128/256MB RAM/ROM, with Bluetooth 2.0, a 2 MP camera, WiFi, and Quad-Band radio with 3G. From a hardware view, its the best of the BlackJack and the Excalibur. In fact, its better than those devices. Lets say that this device would sell for $599 no contract, no carrier. That price is a little more than what you would expect, but then again, this is a bleeding edge device and along with that price comes at least 1 OS upgrade at a cost of $40 when its released. The real advantage here is that the user doesnt have to part ways with their device every year or so, and the manufacturer can still make a little money off the upgrades so they dont feel like they are forced into anything. If they can manage 2 or 3 OS upgrades, then everyone is happy. I would buy a device like this in an instant. What do you think?

Windows Mobile Device Center is Here but...

Posted by Jerry Raia in "THOUGHT" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx

WMDC is no better than ActiveSync as far as I am concerned. Take a quick look at Kris Kumar's post and thread for some sample frustrations. We have people first having to find it. Why isn't it just part of the OS as they stuffed everything else into it? Yes it looks pretty.

User submitted image

It needs to work "pretty" too! If you looked at that thread you saw people opening up ports in firewalls to make things work. How many average users will figure that out? My favorite new feature though is that if you previously had ActiveSync on XP or the WMDC beta on Vista, when you install the released WMDC it won't pick up your device names and will then tell you the names are already in use! I had to go into the registry and find the old device names, delete the keys (they are huge) then go back and rename the new renamed devices back to the old ones. Go try to explain that to your neighbor who can barely get their email. I guess they just didn't have enough time, 5 years, to make sure these things worked. Those of us, like me, who have push enabled devices and have an exchange server don't really need this headache. I won't even install WMDC on my laptop. I'd rather take out the storage card, put it into an adapter and then connect to the PC to transfer files. I still can't get my BlackJack to sync. In short, I don't need this, do you?

Vista Windows Mobile Device Center Walk Through

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THOUGHT" @ 06:30 AM

http://chris.leckness.com/2007/01/13/vista-windows-mobiles-device-center-walk-through

"Since I installed Windows Vista yesterday, I had to set up the Windows Mobile Device Center. I use an Exchange Server (Which by the way works well with Outlook 2007) so I rarely sync anymore, but for when I do, I have to be ready. This walk through has over 25 screenshots, I hope you enjoy."

User submitted image

Chris Leckness is walking us through the Windows Mobile Device Center in Windows Vista. I haven't played much with Windows Vista's RTM version and somehow I am not compelled to run Vista on my daily use computer. What about you? Are you already running Vista RTM or planning to upgrade immediately once Vista is released?

Sling Media Announces a New Sling Catcher Device

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 08:18 AM

http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2007Jan09/0,4670,GadgetShowSlingMedia,00.html

"The maker of Slingbox, a device that lets people watch their home television on laptops away from home, now plans to reverse that flow and bring Web video to television sets. Sling Media Inc. will unveil its upcoming SlingCatcher product at the International Consumer Electronics Show, joining a growing group of companies that aim to bring Web content into the living room. The SlingCatcher will be available in the middle of the year. The price has not been set but will be under $200, said Blake Krikorian, co-founder and CEO of the San Mateo, Calif.-based company. The new set-top box, which will echo the trapezoidal shapes of its Slingbox cousins, will send multimedia content of any format from the Web to a TV, whether it's a slideshow from a photo-sharing site, clips from a video sharing site, or films downloaded from an online movie service."

I don't know how many people are looking to take content from their computer and stream it to their TV. With DVD players coming way down in price, I can't see people spending a $100 to use their laptops DVD player to feed to the TV. On the plus side, later this year Sling will be releasing an update to the software that would allow you to catch streams from a SlingBox. Which is pretty cool. Although, I still can't come up with many situations where you would need such a setup. Either way, it's pretty cool technology. :)

Sprint Adds the Q to its Device Lineup

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://sev.prnewswire.com/telecommunications/20070104/CGTH02504012007-1.html

"Slim and stylish, the MOTO Q offered from Sprint operates on the Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Platform with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack and gives customers easy access to mobile email, Web, calendar, music, video and phone functionality in one pocket-sized device."

It looks like we are still only looking at a CDMA Q. The news says it will be released in the business channel later this month and to the general consumer market in mid February. OK great, so where is the GSM Q?

Steve Ballmer on Windows Mobile: Nokia and Microsoft are the Only Two Real Players in the Smart Device Market

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 09:30 AM

http://news.com.com/Ballmer+discusses+life+after+Vista+-+page+3/2008-1012_3-6141081-3.html?tag=st.num

"Ballmer: Let's say the PC market is roughly 200 million units these days, and let's say the PC market goes great guns over the next several years and grows 14 percent or 15 percent a year. Those are big numbers. You go great guns, China booms. You get maybe over 400 million in a few years. The cell phone market is already a billion units a year, and the truth of the matter is that what I'll call "smart devices," as a percentage, the total is rising dramatically. When it comes to smart devices, there really aren't that many players. Basically, you have Nokia/Symbian, you've got us. Actually, I'll be so bold as to say that the two of us stand out in that area. Then you have some guys who are more niche players--Palm is more of a niche player, (Research In Motion's) BlackBerry is more of a niche player, those Linux devices from Motorola, particularly in China, (mean it) is more of a niche player."

User submitted image

While I do agree with the comment that Microsoft and Nokia are currently the only two real players in the smart phone market, but I think it is a bit too early to start gloating about the success. One of the so called niche player, BlackBerry, is trying to broaden its market with Pearl. And I don't think it is a good idea to rule out Linux. Most of the current success for Windows Mobile is due to HTC; it is only recently that Motorola and Samsung have released popular products based on Windows Mobile. The competition has only begun.

ASUSTek to Become a Big Player in the Smartphone Market? FCC Clears Another ASUS Device Called 02 Graphite

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/ASUS-to-become-a-big-player-in-the-smartphone-market-article-a_1637.html

"A few days ago, we reported about the Vodafone VDA IV smartphone, manufactured by ASUSTeK, Taiwan. What is more interesting is that the FCC just approved an improved version of the smartphone, adding a duo of digital cameras (it is 3G-capable phone) and Wi-Fi wireless protocol. Targeted to O2, the new O2 Graphite will be part of the carriers line of smartphones, which was mainly composed by HTC devices, a Taiwanese brand, leader in Windows Mobile based phones. Keeping identical design to the Vodafone phone, the Graphite will be more advanced than the VDA IV; it runs on Intel PXA270, 416 MHz processor with Intel Hermon modem. XDA Graphite has the same 128MB ROM and 64MB RAM and is tri-band GSM plus single-band UMTS, but the Bluetooth is now v2.0 instead of 1.2."

User submitted image

Nanko Roussev over at phoneArena.com has a very good point. Is ASUSTek the new HTC? Over the weekend we had mentioned that the FCC has cleared an ASUS device for Vodafone called the VDA IV. Unlike HTC that launches one device at a time and then changes the styling to re-brand the device for each carrier/vendor, ASUS has launched two very identical looking handsets but they have big differences on the inside. The 02 Graphite has Wi-Fi, camera and a more powerful processor. Also, this unit uses the standard pocket Internet Explorer instead of Opera. The FCC documents can be viewed over here.

EMEA Smart Mobile Device Market Growth Rises to 11.7%

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:32 PM

http://www.canalys.com/pr/2006/r2006102.htm

"Growth in the EMEA smart mobile device market in Q3 rose slightly from the previous quarter, but remains well below the 100%-plus rates seen for most of last year. Nokia's lead, achieved largely through shipments of its consumer-focused Symbian S60 devices, remains comfortable... HTC, in second place, was by far the fastest growing of the leading vendors and remained narrowly ahead of third-placed RIM for the second quarter running."

I'm pleased to see the speedy growth of Windows Mobile Devices. With the current release of the T-Mobile Dash , I would expect to see HTC continue to grow at very surprising rates. This is a very exciting time to be a Smartphone user!

News International Streamlines Operations with Voice, Data, and E-mail on Single Device

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 09:00 AM

http://members.microsoft.com/CustomerEvidence/Search/EvidenceDetails.aspx?EvidenceID=14986&LanguageID=1

"News International, the arm of News Corporation in the United Kingdom, looked to offer top executives and editors a mobile solution that combined voice, data, and e-mail on a single device. The media giant considered a BlackBerry solution from Research In Motion, but decided against it because of concerns about cost, administration expense, and flexibility."

Nice to see another example of MS being chosen over RIM. I suspect we will see more of this now that the Blackberry Killers are rolling out. The Enterprise really needs to fully embrace Windows Mobile for it to really take off. I think now that this is now beginning to happen.
