Microsoft Updates Facebook Application

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Software" @ 12:00 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...s/facebook.mspx

"If you weren't aware, Microsoft recently released a Facebook application for Windows Mobile. We've heard some users have been having problems with installation and a new copy of the app has been posted. This version should help anyone that was getting the "cannot install due to insufficient privileges" error and it should also help with some hanging errors."

If you were at wit's end last week getting Microsoft's Facebook application to play nice, you may want to head over to the Windows Mobile web site and try downloading and installing it again. The updated version is signed, and packs a few bug fixes.

Windows Mobile Facebook Application Released by Microsoft

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Pocket PC Software" @ 02:24 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...s/facebook.mspx

"New from Windows Mobile: a Facebook application for your phone! Download the new Facebook application for Windows Mobile and: Send messages to any of the people in your Friends list; Take pictures and videos on your phone, then upload them right to Facebook; Send messages or call people in your Friends list; Manage your profile and post anytime, anywhere. Keep up with the latest news and posts with Facebook on your phone. Now your status updates can be up-to-the moment accounts of what you're doing. Photos and videos are about as close to live-action as you can get. Show your friends what you're up to, while you're out and about. Connecting and sharing on Facebook just got a lot livelier!"

In typical fashion, this had been leaked elsewhere previously, but now it's official: the release version of the software is public and available for immediate download. What I find most interesting about this is that it's a Facebook application developed and released by Microsoft. On the iPhone, Facebook developed their own app for it. On Windows Mobile, Microsoft had to do it. That doesn't say much for what Facebook thinks of the Windows Mobile platform, now does it? Looks like RIM developed their own app for the Blackberry though, so this isn't without precedent. Guess the people at Facebook just love their iPhones.

The app will work on all Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 smartphones, both Professional and Standard - sorry all you Windows Mobile 5 owners. You can grab a mobile download here if you wish. I haven't taken it for a spin yet, but will shortly. Let me know what you think of it!

ceSnipURL Shortens URLs For Social Network Sites

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC Software" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.kosertech.com/blog/?cat=7

ceSnipURL is a free utility to convert long URLs into short URLs, which comes in handy for sites like Twitter and Facebook where you have a very limited number of characters to update your status. It automatically uses URLs from the clipboard and once converted, puts them back on the clipboard so you can paste them into your app.

I know a lot of Twitter clients for the Windows Mobile already do this, but some of us prefer to use SMS and PIE for our twitter needs, so this allows us a quick way to shorten URLs before posting. I cannot tell from the site if this works on Standard or not. The screenshot is of a Pro (touch-screen) device. If anyone with a Standard device tries this, let us know how it works.

New FindMe Location Sharing Service Keeps Friends Connected using Smartphones and Facebook

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 01:37 PM

http://electricpocket.com/aboutus/p...s/pr080318.html

"Electric Pocket, developer of mobile media and media applications for Smartphones, today introduces FindMe for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices. FindMe enables users, their friends, family and colleagues to share their current locations automatically and securely through their BlackBerry or Windows Mobile Smartphones without needing GPS. FindMe offers the opportunity to “tag” commonly visited locations, such as home, office, soccer field or favorite bars and restaurants, and post those locations on their Facebook profiles."

This is probably one of the coolest applications I have seen come out in a while. There really isn't much to say on it as the program itself is pretty basic. In a nutshell, what you do is install a tiny application on your Windows Mobile device. This application grabs information about the cell tower that you are connected to and allows you to assign a tag to that location. Then the application uploads your current location to Facebook which in turn allows all of your friends to see where you are. The only downside of this application that I can see is it will make a bit harder to hide from those individuals that you do not want to hang out with.

If you're a Facebook user then I recommend giving FindMe a download to play around with this simple, yet fun, program.

Facebook is Consuming My Soul

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Talk" @ 06:39 PM

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4705794657

For the past few weeks a few of the editors here at Smartphone Thoughts have managed to get ourselves tangled into the Internet's newest time consuming addiction better known as Facebook. A few days ago, after forcing myself away from the dreaded Pirates game, one of the many applications available on Facebook, I decided that I would start putting the online service to use and created a Smartphone Thoughts group. I did this for two reasons:

  1. All of the other mobile sites were doing it and I felt left out.
  2. I figured there were at least a few of our readers using Facebook and this would be a perfect opportunity to connect more with our readers.

So if you find yourself stuck on Facebook and want more friends, or you need new people to bomb on the addicting Pirates game, feel free to join our group and say "hello"
