Create PDF Files on Windows Mobile 5 Devices

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://raineffect.com/RainEffect/default.htm

"Now you can create full fidelity PDFs directly from your Smartphone. Share photos, record business meetings or presentations, attach files, and encrypt it all for greater security."

User submitted image

Creating .pdf files on a Smartphone seems to me to be about as enjoyable as a root canal. However if you have been dying to do this, there is now a way. The downside is you need to install the .NET Compact Framework 2.0. They have a free trial or you can pick it up for $19.95 USD. I have not tried it myself so I don't know how functional the trial version is. The purchasing page states: "Your email address will only be used to send you an invoice and instructions for product registration." I read that to mean you may have to wait for the registration code.

Sprite Explorer - Free Utility for Sprite Backup Customers to Explore Backup Files

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.spritesoftware.com/sprite-explorer

"Sprite Explorer provides you with the flexibility of viewing, browsing and extracting files and folders from your Sprite Backup or Sprite Clone images from your PC. Recovering individual files or folders has never been easier or more intuitive. Whats more, Sprite Explorer is free! ... Have you ever had a situation where you have accidentally deleted a file, or over-written a key document. You know that you have a copy of the document in your last backup, but the only way to access that document would be to restore your image to your device, erasing anything that you have updated! Now with Sprite Explorer, you can explore your images, and extract individual files and folders. Recovery has got even easier."

User submitted image

Kudos to the folks over at SpriteSoftware for releasing this handy utility. I have faced the situation where the file I need is on one of the backup files; but to get to it I had to take a fresh backup, restore the old backup, recover the file and then restore the latest backup. Not anymore, thanks to this tool. What amazes me is that this tool is FREE for the Sprite customers. 8)

CAB Install DCV: Install CAB Files From Windows!

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.gpcarreon.com/?p=416

"Users who are new to Windows mobile-based Smartphone often ask why by clicking on a CAB, they get to see _setup.xml, XXX.001, YYY.002, ZZZ.003, etc. That is because by default, Windows XP (Explorer) opens CAB files (be it Smartphone or PPC CAB) instead of installing them. It literally opens another folder showing you the contents of the CAB. CAB Install DCV on the other hand installs CAB via mouse double-click."

User submitted image

While I love my Smartphone, there are a couple of features that Microsoft did not implement into the user experience that leave me completely baffled. Installing CAB files from Windows happens to be one of those features that would have made all of our lives just a little bit easier. Luckily for us, gpcarreon has created a nifty freeware program that does just that!

Have Smaller Outlook PST Files with PSTCompactor

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.jakeludington.com/downloads/20051011_pstcompactor_home_edition.html

"Outlook is far from a perfect mail client, but it combines everything I use daily in one common location better than anything else I've tried, so I live with the shortcomings. One of the places Outlook really needs improvement is the bloated PST storage file where all that data collects. PSTCompactor helps shrink your PST file by as much as 38%, optimizing in areas where Microsoft hasn't managed to fix some glaring issues. Compress attachments, force compacting of data and permanently eliminate deleted messages and information. By keeping your PST file clean, mail data is less prone to corruption and failure. The home edition is limited to compacting 5 PST files. Compatible with Outlook 98, 2k, XP and 2003. [Windows 2k/XP $24.95]."

Since the vast majority of Pocket PC and Smartphone owners use Outlook, this utility might come in handy if you have a large PST file and want to shrink it down.

.NET Compact Framework Version 2 .CAB Files Explained

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 11:30 AM

https://blogs.msdn.com/netcfteam/archive/2005/10/11/479793.aspx

"Just like other Windows CE applications, .Net Compact Framework V2 (NETCF V2) is distributed as a set of CAB files. This article describes these CABs and discusses potential installation problems as well as ways to solve these problems. ... Each CAB file contains at least one native (CPU dependent) NETCF runtime, CPU independent managed libraries and setup DLL. In some cases CAB file contains more than one native runtimes, each optimized for particular CPU flavor. For example, NETCFv2.wce5.mipsii.cab contains two runtimes, one for MIPS II CPU and another one for MIPS II FP CPU (which has dedicated floating point unit). Correct runtime files are picked at installation time by setup DLL, unused files are discarded to save space."

User submitted image

Ilya Tumanov from the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework team has explained the .NET Compact Framework Version 2.0 distribution packages and the scenarios in which can be applied. I am sure the Smartphone developers know that the version 2.0 of the Compact Framework is not available on Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone. In case you didn't, the charts in this article make it clear. ;-)

Sendo Files EU Complaint Against Ericsson

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=4271

"Now Sendo claims that Ericsson is seeking to license its patents to third parties on an unfair, anti-competitive, abusive and discriminatory basis leading to the charging of excessive royalty rates, which when combined with other companies' royalties results in a cumulative excessive royalty rate. The companys goes on to say that this restricts competition and excludes new market entrants from operating effectively or at all in the GSM market. Sendo explains that the GSM Standard, partly funded by the European Union at the expense of the European taxpayer, and the corresponding ETSI rules, define the conditions of competition in the market for GSM technology and make companies that declare patents as "essential" for the GSM standard, obligatory trading partners."

Isn't it funny how when companies aren't doing well they start suing everybody as being unfair? Sendo I have some free advice for you, put the money you are wasting on lawyers into your product. Maybe then you won't have to sue everyone around you. Granted they were sued by Ericsson first but this is getting a bit silly. What ever comes of it?

Visto Files Patent Lawsuit Against Smartner

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=4135

"Visto Corporation had filed a complaint alleging patent infringements against Smartner Information Systems Ltd. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, seeks a permanent injunction that would prohibit Smartner from continuing to marketing its services in the United States. Visto will also seek monetary damages as compensation for Smartner's illegal actions. Both companies offer secure push e-mail for mobile devices like Windows Mobile Pocket PC, Windows Mobile Smartphone and Symbian smartphones."

We've talked about Smartner and their push technology in the past. Those of you that are using it seem to really like what it has to offer. It would be a shame to see its life cut short. Hopefully some middle ground can be found.

Sync Files with Rubber Stamped Data Sync 2.1

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:15 AM

http://www.smartphone.net/smartphonethoughts/software_detail.asp?id=361

"This software allows you to sync files and directories (and subdirectories) to and from any location on your mobile device, storage card or PC. This software doesn't install any software on the phone, instead, it runs completely from the users PC. The program features a system tray icon and the ability to "auto sync" every time you connect your device. In addition, it also has the ability to sync on a schedule and to download and sync individual files from the web."

User submitted image

Has anyone here used this? It looks like a really good solution to the missing file conduit in ActiveSync - which I just don't understand why Microsoft left it out. Anyway, it's only $11.95 and there is a 30 day trail version available. If you want to grab or buy a copy, you can do so here. [Affiliate]

Copy Files To Mobile Device Easily

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 03:00 PM

Do you transfer Music files or Photos to your mobile device frequently? Do you wish for an easier way to transfer the CAB files to the 'Start Menu\Accessories' folder? Do you copy documents or files to a specific folder on your mobile device? Do you perform one-way file sync, i.e. transfer files from your PC to device? If the answer to any of the above questions is true, you may want to read this Step By Step article.

User submitted image

When you are done reading this article, you will be able to setup the right click shortcut menu options on your PC. You can configure them according to your needs, set them up so that you can easily transfer files to the mobile device folders you access frequently. Once these right click shortcuts are in place, you will no longer have to Copy-Paste the files manually and also don't have to navigate through a maze of folders to get to the target folder, at least not for the frequently used folders.

Lets get started!
I have two methods, the first one is simple to setup, and the second one is a little tricky but adds context sensitivity. Lets say you want the right click shortcut to show up only for .CAB files or for .MP3 files, then the second approach is the one that you need. The first one works well, but don't you want the computer to be smart enough to sense what you want to do :-) This article will focus on the first method. Stay tuned to SPT for another article on method 2, coming soon.

The requirements for this solution are:
- Windows 2000/XP based desktop
- Windows Mobile Smartphone or Pocket PC
- Must be proficient with Notepad :-)
- WindowsMobilePowerToys.msi must be installed

The heart of this solution is CECopy a free utility provided by Microsoft in the Windows Mobile Power Toys. CECopy enables command prompt based copy of files from PC to device. In this article we will learn to utilize its functionality without getting into the command prompt or DOS hell.

The only limitation I am aware of (and it may be a big one for you) is that you cannot select multiple files and copy them to the device. You will have to Right Click each individual file and copy it to the device one by one. Or copy the whole folder.

Method 1:

This approach adds a Copy to Device shortcut to the 'Send To' menu.

Once you have installed CECopy (it gets installed when WindowsMobilePowerToys.msi is installed). Locate the CECopy.exe, and note its path. On my machine its path is C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\CECopy. Depending on your system drive, the path or drive letter may vary. Check out the ReadMe.txt in the CECopy folder, if you want to learn more about the CECopy functionality.

Next lets launch the friendly editor, the Notepad. And add the following line.
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\CECopy\CECopy.exe" %1 "dev:\<devicefolderhere>"

Replace <devicefolderhere> with the mobile device folder that you frequently write files to. e.g. If you want to copy CAB files then you may want to replace <devicefolderhere> with \IPSM\Windows\Start Menu\Accessories. If you copy MP3 files then maybe you can replace it with \Storage Card\Music. Or for documents and other miscellaneous files - \Storage Card\My Documents.

Following are the valid examples:
1.
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\CECopy\CECopy.exe" %1 "dev:\IPSM\Windows\Start Menu\Accessories"

2.
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\CECopy\CECopy.exe" %1 "dev:\Storage Card\Music"

3.
"C:\Program Files\Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys\CECopy\CECopy.exe" %1 "dev:\Storage Card\My Documents"

Make sure that the path is valid. And do not forget to include the double quotes (") around the CECopy.exe path and the dev: path.

Now save this file as a Batch (.BAT) file. Give it a descriptive name, like Copy 2 Mobile Device - <shortfoldernamedescription>. The <shortfoldernamedescription> can be Music, My Documents, or Accessories depending on the command being saved or performed in the file. So the following are valid examples of the file names:
Copy 2 Mobile Device - Music folder.bat
Copy to My Smartphone - Accessories folder.bat
Copy to My Documents on Mobile Device.bat

Once the .BAT file is saved, create a Shortcut link for it by right clicking the .BAT file and then selecting 'Create Shortcut' option from the popup menu. You may want to edit the shortcut file name, so that the prefix 'Shortcut to' is removed. You may want to pretty it up, by assigning an icon to the shortcut file. Right click the shortcut, select 'Properties' and then select 'Change Icon'.

Now its time to move the shortcut file from its current location to the following folder. C:\Documents and Settings\<loggedInUserName>\SendTo

Depending on the way Windows is installed on your machine the drive letter may change. The <loggedInUserName> is the Windows login name for whom the shortcut is to be created. In most cases it will be your login id.

Copy the shortcut file to the above folder. And its time to test our little utility. Right click on any file and select the 'Send To' option from the popup menu. And you will see your shortcut in the list. Select it and you will see a command console window popup that will transfer the selected file to the target folder on the device.

Method 2:

I will have the method 2 published soon. Don't change the channel and keep watching this site. :-)

Working With Files on Smartphone Devices

Posted by Mike Temporale in "DEVELOPER" @ 08:40 AM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/SPFiles.asp

"While the Smartphone platform shares many features with its bigger brother the Pocket PC, it differs somewhat in its file management functionality. By default a Smartphone does not include a File Explorer application and there are no common file dialog boxes available to the developer. If your application involves opening data files you will need some method of browsing and selecting data files. Another consideration for Smartphone developers is that these devices generally have less on-board storage memory than a basic Pocket PC. Depending on your application you can use either removable storage cards or retrieve data via the mobile network.

This article will examine some of the considerations when building file based applications for the Smartphone platform with managed code. This will include some code examples you can use to build in file system browsing to your .NET Compact Framework applications."
