Free Screen Capture From Ilium Software

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC Software" @ 02:00 AM

http://blog.iliumsoft.com/2009/07/0...date-available/

Ilium Software has just released an update to their Screen Capture utility for Windows Mobile devices. I haven't downloaded it yet but I think this saves files in PNG format, which is quite a bit smaller than the old BMP format the previous version used. It is available for WinMo 5 and 6.x devices, both Professional and Standard. If you are still using WinMo 2003SE or earlier, you'll need to continue using the older version.

Just like the previous version, this one is free.

New FindMe Location Sharing Service Keeps Friends Connected using Smartphones and Facebook

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 01:37 PM

http://electricpocket.com/aboutus/p...s/pr080318.html

"Electric Pocket, developer of mobile media and media applications for Smartphones, today introduces FindMe for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices. FindMe enables users, their friends, family and colleagues to share their current locations automatically and securely through their BlackBerry or Windows Mobile Smartphones without needing GPS. FindMe offers the opportunity to “tag” commonly visited locations, such as home, office, soccer field or favorite bars and restaurants, and post those locations on their Facebook profiles."

This is probably one of the coolest applications I have seen come out in a while. There really isn't much to say on it as the program itself is pretty basic. In a nutshell, what you do is install a tiny application on your Windows Mobile device. This application grabs information about the cell tower that you are connected to and allows you to assign a tag to that location. Then the application uploads your current location to Facebook which in turn allows all of your friends to see where you are. The only downside of this application that I can see is it will make a bit harder to hide from those individuals that you do not want to hang out with.

If you're a Facebook user then I recommend giving FindMe a download to play around with this simple, yet fun, program.

Yet Another Free Push Email Solution for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.consilient.com

Consilient has just tossed their hat into the mix. They're offering a free push email solution for Windows Mobile, specifically, the BlackJack but I don't see any reason why this would not work on other devices as well. It will push your email from any of the top web based email accounts like Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo. It even offers you the ability to lock down your phone if it's lost. So if you don't already have push email or you want to get your web based email account on your Windows Mobile device, this looks like it might be worth a try.

Mobiblogr v1.2.1 Now Out - Blog on the Move for Free

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news3268.html

"You remember MobiBlogr that we mentioned a while back? It's a free mobile blogging tool letting you type blog posts on your Windows Mobile which appear instantly on your specially customized MobiBlogr page like this. A few days back MobiBlogr 1.2.1 was released and there's now extra functions such as picture uploading direct from your device and better blog post editing. You can also now reach your blog by browsing to http://mobiblogr.com/blog/{username} or your instant online album by going to http://mobiblogr.com/blog/{username}/album. I love this software, it's completely free and lets you write a blog without being tied to a computer. "

User submitted image

If you're a blogger and free is appealing to you, then MobiBlogr may be just what you want. Blogging is ususlly done on a desktop or laptop computer but with MobiBlogr you can blog right from your smartphone. I personally have never blogged but it is something I'm interested in. So do you blog? What do you like about blogging and is it practical from your smartphone or is this just not realistic?

"Our Device Management and Security (DMSec) team recently produced a series of security booklets. These were very well recieved at the MEDC 2007 event last week. So I'd like to point out that these are also available online."

For those of you concerned about security these might be of interest. They cover both Windows Mobile and Exchange. While possible a bit too deep for most people, one might find some interesting nuggets of information.

Cingular Unlocks Blackjack for Free

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 09:00 AM

http://crunchgear.com/2007/03/15/cingular-unlocks-blackjack-for-free/

"I called Cingulars International Care Center at (916) 843-4685 Tuesday morning and spoke with a customer service representative, who confirmed that I could unlock all my Cingular phones for international travel. To unlock my Blackjack, I read him my International Mobile Equipment Identity, or IMEI, number, which can be found on the product box or by entering the code *#06# on the Blackjacks keypad. After I read him the IMEI, he processed it through the computer and gave me an unlock code specific to my phone. He then instructed me to power down my phone, take out the Subscriber Identification Module, or SIM, card and power it back up. Once the phone rebooted, I entered in the code ########## (blanked out since this code will only work for Wayne), which brought up the prompt: Enter Network Control Key. I put in my unlock code, and the phone returned the message: Successfully Disable Locking Status."

I tried calling this number yesterday during my lunch break but I did not have the same luck. Unfortunately the customer service representative that took my call did not appear to have any idea of what she was doing. Needless to say, I'll try calling again later today. If any of our readers have managed to unlock their handsets using this method, let us know! :)

jB5 - Free Internet Browser for Windows Mobile

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:35 PM

http://www.jataayu.net/

jB5 is a new browser from the guys at Jataayu. Open a free account and download it here for nothing. It's a slick and nimble browser which works extremely well on the Smartphone (Windows Mobile Standard) interface. The user interface has been designed exclusively for the Windows Smartphone and, if I'm honest, the speed and rendering simply knocks spots off the in-built Pocket Internet Explorer. It supports many different web formats lets you alter your cache size, favourites and history - plus you can turn images on or off to reduce your data usage.

User submitted image

It is refreshing to see a new mobile browser appear on the horizon. After using Pocket Internet Explorer for several years now, I am ecstatic at the chance to actually replace it with a more streamlined browser. Unfortunately, trying to download jB5 from Jataayus website has almost been as frustrating as trying to find a browser to replace Internet Explorer. It appears that no matter what I do I am unable to access their download pages and continue to get kicked back to their homepage. Hopefully this is just a minor glitch and not a cruel means of torture by curiosity.

Windows Mobile 6 Upgrades Available for Free to Existing Vendors

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 08:30 AM

Everyone has been wondering if their device will see an update to Windows Mobile 6. In the past, very few manufacturers and carriers have gone down that path. There's a significant cost required in buying the new license and customizing it for the device and of course, testing it on the device and networks. Hopefully things will be different this time. We've just learned that Microsoft has given a free license to vendors who will upgrade their devices. So I think it's clear that Microsoft understands the frustration that all of us feel when a new OS is released and are trying to change things. It's expected that HTC will offer upgrades for any device with a keyboard - as all of you Dash/Excalibur users are already aware. Unfortunately we don't know what Motorola or Samsung plan to do about this. The ball is in the carriers and manufacturers court. Let's hope they don't drop it. :?

Every once in a while one of these huge carriers does the right thing, even if they try to keep it a secret. Has anyone seen this advertised anywhere? I went over and signed up for my battery already. Get over there before they change their mind! Thanks, nutzareus for the find. :)

Free Mobile NTP Client for Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:30 PM

http://www.smartphone-freeware.com/download-mobile-ntp-client-1-2.html

User submitted image

Here's a handy little tool to help you keep your phones time in sync. If your carrier doesn't keep the correct time zones on their towers like mine, and you don't sync with your desktop all that much, you might want to give this app a go. The only drawback is that it's only available in German. However, the free price tag should make up for it. :D

Edited to reflect that it's actually a NTP client and not a NNTP client. ;)

Amazon Offers Cingular BlackJack for Free After Rebates

User submitted image

Is it a sign of a phones success or the end of its life span when Amazon starts to offer it for free after rebates? I'm going with the success option - especially in this case. ;) Cingular's QWERTY based Windows Mobile device, the Samsung i607 (aka BlackJack) is now available for the incredibly low price of $0.00 after rebates. In typical Amazon fashion, youll need to sign a contract in order to qualify for this rebate. Thats not a big deal for those of you that are looking to get your first device or are currently out of contract with your carrier. So what are you waiting for? Head on over to Amazon and grab yourself one of the hottest Smartphones on the market today. :D [Affiliate]

Nokia Delivers Free Downloadable Maps to the Mobile World, Windows Mobile Included

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.nokia.com/A4136001?newsid=1103306

"Nokia today announced that it is making its smart2go mapping and navigation platform, available for free download (www.smart2go.com), enabling millions of people to use the most comprehensive map coverage offered on a mobile device. The platform allows for mapping and routing in over 150 countries and has support for full turn-by-turn satellite navigation in over 30 countries. The application allows people to view where they are on a map, search for points-of-interests (POI) around them and create routes to get them there free of charge. Nokia plans to start offering the smart2go application for free, on Saturday, February 10th, for selected Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices initially and has plans to roll out support for most of the major mobile OS platforms including Nokia S60, Series 40, PocketPC, Linux and other Windows Mobile devices."

User submitted image

Nokia has surprised the mobile world by releasing FREE mapping software for not only its own Nokia S60 devices, but also for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. 8O This unexpected gift for the Windows Mobile world has got some blogs speculating that Nokia might be interested in Windows Mobile and planning to launch a device with it. In fact I believe the IDC or Gartner has even recommended that to Nokia. Getting back to the mapping software, Microsoft and Google both offer similar applications, the unique feature of Nokia's application is that it an hybrid application; it allows the users to download the maps on to the storage card and also access the maps real-time like Google or Microsoft. I like the ability to have the maps available on my phone instead of downloading it always, not everyone has an unlimited data plan. The thing that bugs me is that this free download was supposed to become available today but Nokia's smart2Go Web site still says "Coming Soon." Oh, forgot to mention the one and only catch. The free mapping software offers only viewing locations, for turn-by-turn direction with voice prompts you will have to pay a fee.

Sprite Explorer - Free Utility for Sprite Backup Customers to Explore Backup Files

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.spritesoftware.com/sprite-explorer

"Sprite Explorer provides you with the flexibility of viewing, browsing and extracting files and folders from your Sprite Backup or Sprite Clone images from your PC. Recovering individual files or folders has never been easier or more intuitive. Whats more, Sprite Explorer is free! ... Have you ever had a situation where you have accidentally deleted a file, or over-written a key document. You know that you have a copy of the document in your last backup, but the only way to access that document would be to restore your image to your device, erasing anything that you have updated! Now with Sprite Explorer, you can explore your images, and extract individual files and folders. Recovery has got even easier."

User submitted image

Kudos to the folks over at SpriteSoftware for releasing this handy utility. I have faced the situation where the file I need is on one of the backup files; but to get to it I had to take a fresh backup, restore the old backup, recover the file and then restore the latest backup. Not anymore, thanks to this tool. What amazes me is that this tool is FREE for the Sprite customers. 8)

Free 3D Golf Game

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 10:00 AM

Register now and find your swing."

User submitted image

Head on over for a free golf game. The catch? You have to sign up for a Microsoft Newsletter. Small price I'd say. There are separate versions for landscape and portrait display Smartphones, as well as, ahem, Pocket PC's (are they still around?) :)

Free Contact Exporting Tool From WM-soft

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:45 AM

http://www.wm-soft.com/products/export-contacts

"Windows Mobile 5 device to HTML or XML file. Everyting can happen, so its better to have several backups of your contacts, not only in PC outlook. Or may be youre using Linux and cant sycnronize your WM5 device with PC. This small freeware tool can export all contacts from your Export Contacts exports more than 50 properties, including photos and ringtones!"

User submitted image

Now here's a handy tool. If the developer would add an import function this could be a real hit as not everyone wants to install and use Outlook on their PC just to manage contacts. I also like the exporting of Ringtone settings as this is something that is lost everytime I switch phones. 8)

TxtMan - A Cool Free Inline SMS Tool

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://benhirashima.com/software/

"TxtMan is a threaded SMS program for Windows Mobile 5.0. It sends and receives text messages (SMS) and displays the messages as a conversation, like an instant messenger client. TxtMan requires the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 to be installed on your phone in order to run. It's free, and many other Windows Mobile programs require it, so it's a good thing to have."

User submitted image

This looks really neat. I'm a bit disappointed that it requires Microsoft's .Net Compact Framework 2.0 as the program is so huge. The good new is, you can now install the .NET Framework to your storage card. :)
