WinMo Creative Software And Design Contest

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC Events" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.windowsmobilecontest.com/en/?pid=1

"Windows Mobile handsets are becoming more and more popular. The industry is known to be the fastest growing segment in the smart phone market. The growing popularity of Windows Mobile triggers an increasing demand for more creative and entertaining applications. To foster greater creativity among different sectors of the community and encourage development of a greater variety of Windows Mobile applications, Microsoft recently joined hands with The Pocket PC Channel, a popular online media in Hong Kong, and also the Cyberport IncuTrain Centre, to launch the "Windows Mobile Software & Game Design Contest". Winning applications will be made available for users to download on Windows Mobile Marketplace, the latest service to be rolled-out along with the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 later this year, bringing in new business opportunities for the creative industry at large."

If you are capable of writing apps and want a chance to win HKD150,000 (that is about $19,300 US at today's conversion rate) and are at least 16, you can enter the contest. More information is at their site.

Twice the Logic!

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Software" @ 01:00 AM

http://software.pocketpcthoughts.co...e-for-Pocket-PC

"The smart logic game Twice combines the main principles of a classic game: an attractive appearance, popular and simple rules and a variety of game modes. Its rules are well known: you have to flip the face-down tiles in the puzzle one by one and remember the pattern on the other side. When you flip two identical tiles, you score points. To complete the level you have to find all of the pairs. Twice has three game modes so you can pick the game that suits your tastes – race against time, limited number of attempts or no limits at all. Just choose one of them and you will not be able to stop playing! The magical graphics and traditional Oriental music add a mysterious charm to this game. Twice – a perfect realization of simplicity and genius."

Ok the gameplay might not be terribly original - but I still remember wasting...er...killing time with such a memory game on my old dumb phone, way back in the mists of time. The game modes allow for greater flexibility, while the music should provide some atmosphere to your cogitations. Twice is available for trial or purchase through our affiliate links at $9.95 for the WM Standard version and $12.95 for the WM Pro version.

A trail version is available, and if you like what you see, $14.95 will get you the full version.

Astraware Casino v1.20 Review

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 04:00 AM

http://software.smartphonethoughts....ct.asp?id=15782

Product Category: Games
Manufacturer: Astraware
Where to Buy: MobiHand [Affiliate]
Price: $19.95
System Requirements: Windows Mobile 2003 or later. QVGA or QVGA Landscape resolution screen.

Pros:
  • Fun and addicting
  • Great way to pass the time
  • Includes instructions for how to play each game
Cons:
  • Smartphone button layouts can make gaming awkward
Summary: I’m going to spoil this review for you from the get go and let you know that this is one of the most entertaining games I have ever played on my Windows Mobile handset. I would also like to start off and mention that I do not gamble one bit. I don’t even play the lottery. Reason being is I happen to get bored very easily and always end up making stupid betting decisions just to make things a bit more interesting… and then I lose all of my money. It’s a vicious cycle I tell you! This is where Astraware came in and saved the day. You can still lose in Casino – In fact I have lost a lot in Casino – but Astraware has found a way to make losing virtual money entertaining by giving away souvenirs for just about everything, including losing! So enough with my rambling and let’s get on to the review! Read more...

Windows Mobile Virus on the Loose

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone News" @ 02:55 PM

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/0...s-on-the-loose/

"There's nothing special about Windows Mobile, Palm, or Symbian devices that make them virus-resistant. It's just that for the most part malicious hackers haven't tried to target mobile devices because there hasn't been that much information worth stealing. But as people put more and more valuable data on their cellphones and PDAs, those devices are becoming more attractive targets. And so we probably shouldn't be surprised that McAfee released an alert this week that a virus targeting the Windows Mobile operating system is making the rounds..."

Huh, well look at that. I guess this answers that age old question for us as to why some carriers feel the need to install, what we thought to be, useless anti-virus software on our devices before sending them out in the wild. According to McAfee's website, the WinCE/InfoJack trojan sends valuable information about the infected handset to the author of the application. Some of the data that is being sent are things like the devices serial number, operating system version and anything else it can get its grubby little hands on. On top of that, it also leaves the handset vulnerable for silent installation of other types of unsigned applications and malware. This is some pretty serious and scary stuff!

The worst part about this trojan is that it appears to have been distributed via applications for stock trading, some games and even Google Maps! Now before you start panicking, I should point out that if you downloaded your Google Maps application from Google or your games applications and stock trading tips applications from or their respected developers and not off of some shady website behind the Great Wall, you're most likely in the clear! I guess our happy-go-lucky days of installing applications without a care in the world are officially over.

AMD Announces Suite of Tools for Developing Handheld Games

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 03:00 PM

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070308-amd-brings-xbox-360-tech-to-handhelds.html

"At GDC today, AMD announced a suite of tools for developing handheld gaming content for the company's next-generation mobile graphics parts. The suite includes Rendermonkey 1.7, a shader tool that will let game developers write graphics code for a range of devices that support the OpenVG 1.0, OpenGL 2.0, and Unified Shader Architecture technologies. ATI's Unified Shader Architecture in particular is one of the main selling points of the Xbox 360, and AMD will offer support for unified shaders on its next generation of mobile parts...The Imageon processor line, announced by AMD last month, is essentially a "GPU" for mobile devices. Imageon is more flexible than a desktop GPU, of course, since with a mobile device you want to save on cost and battery life by cramming as much of the phone onto one piece of silicon as you possibly can. So Imageon has support for 3D and 2D graphics, audio processing, digital still and video cameras, TV out, video recording with image stabilization, video transcoding, and various other multimedia features. All of this stuff is on a single chip that's separate from the phone's radio chip, so that the handset maker can upgrade to a new version of Imageon without having to go through the process of FCC qualification each time they add features."

User submitted image

We haven't seen a Windows Mobile device with an Imageon processor yet, but we can always hope. If the power requirements could be kept under control, a GPU could really help boost media processing on the device that's now currently done by the CPU - and we all know that once we start playing a game that uses up 100% of our CPU, battery life goes into the toilet along with overall device performance (your device will check email and the game will sputter). Before we see the software though, we need the hardware - developers need a platform with which to sell their wares. I wonder if we'll see any Windows Mobile devices with an Imageon processor out this year? i-Mate's Ultimate line would have seemed to be a good fit for something like this.

Graphics with DirectX in Windows Mobile 5.0 Games

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 10:30 AM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnppcgen/html/Graphics_DirectX_WM5_Games.asp

"Gaming on mobile devices has become very popular in recent years. The hardware capabilities of these devices are better than ever. Many new devices that contain improvements like very high quality displays, faster processors, more memory, and hardware three-dimensional acceleration pave the way for developing games that take advantage of all these features. As a developer, having to manage and write graphics code to suit each device can be difficult. Thanks to Direct3D Mobile and DirectDraw, application programming interfaces (APIs) within the DirectX family, developing games for Windows Mobile 5.0 powered devices is much more manageable than in the past."

This MSDN article is aimed at those game developers that are switching over from the desktop to the mobile world. If that's you, then this 24 page article should make as some nice bedtime material. ;)

Astraware Announces Windows Mobile 5.0 Support for Several Games

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.astraware.com/company/whatsnew.php#117

"Astraware, a Microsoft Certified Partner Company, is excited to announce that several of their games have now been updated to support devices running Windows Mobile 5.0. A total of 11 games have been updated to support Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC handhelds, with 4 of these titles also supporting Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone devices."

Good to see software companies coming out with this before the devices are actually readily available. It seemed with WM2003 it was reversed. I recall waiting around for a few applications to be upgraded.

Camera-Enabled Mobile Games or "Motion Games"

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.textually.org/picturephoning/archives/2005/06/008766.htm

"EyeMobile brings mobile gaming to the next generation: camera-enabled mobile games or "motion games". Don't let the buttons get in your way: just tilt the phone to control the action. Play your game -- including snowboarding, driving, flying and moresimply, intuitively, naturally."

This is a great idea! If it works well it ends the problem for some phones that have poor gaming joysticks like the 5600. :)

Watch Live Animated Baseball Games on your Mobile Phone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=1289

"In Japan, baseball fans will be able to watch live baseball games on their cell phones this season - in an animated form. This means that avatars take the place of players, and action is transformed, play by play, into a cartoon like environment. This includes the roar of the crowd, the scoreboard, the pitch, the strike, and the trajectory of the ball. This isn't a game, but a cartoon version of a live game, produced by Craftmax's Digital Stadium and broadcast to DoCoMo 3G mobiles."

This just begs the question, why? Is there nothing better to do on a 3G mobile phone? Here's an idea, stream the actual baseball game - with real people playing. Not just some silly cartoon version.
