iMate Down, But Not Out?

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC News" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/5683...-to-major-fraud

Last week, I told you that iMate had shuttered their offices and were closing down the operation.Apparently it isn't that black and white. Supposedly, they are in dire financial straits due to fraud committed by one of their executives. We'll keep you posted as we hear more information, but for now, consider iMate on pause, not stop.

iMate Shutters Operations, Closes Offices

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC News" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.itp.net/573861-i-mate-shuts-down

"UAE mobile phone company i-mate has gone out of business, according to market sources. The company, which mainly sold branded smartphones, has closed its office in Dubai Internet City and founder and CEO Jim Morrison is believed to have left the country."

iMate came on the scene really strongly with the Windows Mobile 2003 SE devices like the PDA2K which had a keyboard that slid out from the bottom. They really hit their stride with WinMo 5 with the K-Jam, JasJar and many others. These were HTC devices, but iMate was selling them unlocked to consumers through various retail outlets, and this made them popular with a lot of users. When things soured between them and HTC, iMate contracted to have their own devices made, but it was never really the same. It also didn't help that they rarely provided OS upgrades for their devices, free or otherwise. Even their updates often proved buggy. More than once I had to rely on XDA Developers for a fix to some new bug introduced in an updated ROM. Even with 100% reproducible bugs confirmed by dozens of posts at various sites, they just shrugged it of saying they couldn't repro so it must not be their problem.

I hate to see anyone lose their job and feel for all of the iMate employees that have been let go recently, but as far as I can tell, the main culprit is upper management that favored profit over customer satisfaction. I hope any of you with a device under warranty have no problems with it.

Another iMate SP5m Review

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.howardchui.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=228

"In the past I've found Windows Mobile Powered Smartphone to be great connected devices for surfing the web, checking email and instant messaging (even though they only support MSN Messenger out of the box). At the same time, they weren't the greatest devices for listening to music/watching video. While they supported removable memory cards and had the necessary software the overall user experience usually left something to be desired."

There is always room for one more SP5m review and here it is. I would like this phone a lot more if it had a hump. :lol:

iMate SP5m = My New Favorite Phone... Almost

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 09:00 AM

http://blog.seanalexander.com/PermaLink,guid,82830b2e-6d87-4aef-bbf9-eb8555cb101f.aspx

"I've been a long-time user of the HTC-developed Audiovox SMT-5600 Windows Mobile Smartphone (a.k.a. Scoblephone in some circles). It's dependable overall, syncs my mailbox, I can browse the web (to my wife's chagrin at times) and of course, sync my contacts and music directly to the phone. But there's a new kid in town. A follow-up to the SMT-5600, HTC has partnered with iMate to create the iMate SP5m. With a QVGA (320x240) brightly lit screen, faster data service w/ EDGE, built-in WiFi and carrying over Bluetooth support, the phone has to be experienced when turned on. While EDGE isn't as fast as EV-DO or other true 3G high-speed networks, with T-Mobile, I get an unlimited data plan and can use it in most places as a wireless modem in a pinch."

The phone everybody loves to love. Everywhere I look is another paragraph or two about how wonderful life is with this phone in the world. Well there are some kinks in the armour! HA! Read the rest of this article and see. Ok it's just a couple of sentences and it's not really derogatory, but enough. It's time for you SP5m lovers to come up for air! Not to mention any names. :lol:

Comparing the New iMate SP5 and the Older SP3

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THOUGHT" @ 07:15 AM

http://www.Smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9714

"I promised a while back that I'd write a comparative review of the T-Mobile SDA (AKA i-Mate SP3) and the i-Mate SP5. Well, I've had the SP5 for a few days now, so here we go. There won't be any pictures - if you're after pics, I'd just Google it. I haven't written a review like this before either, so it might be horribly disorganised or I might miss out important things. You get what you pay for."

Smartphone Thoughts reader Chris, (aka pugwonk) has posted a review comparing his new iMate SP5 to his older SP3. Overall, I think Chris has done a great job and he even mentions a couple things that I missed in my review - like the speed of the phone. If you're still thirsty for more information, then you'll want to check out his comments. 8)

User submitted image

Product Category: Hardware
Manufacturer: i-mate
Where to Buy: Expansys
Price: $494.95 USD
Specifications: Windows Mobile 5.0, Quad-Band Smartphone Featuring QVGA, Bluetooth, and WiFi.

Pros:
  • Beautiful QVGA Screen;
  • Fast Data Access Over GPRS & WiFi;
  • Dedicated music buttons.
Cons:
  • EU power cable requires North American adapter;
  • Poorly designed belt case.
Summary: The i-mate SP5m is the first of its kind to hit the street; a Windows Mobile Smartphone with WiFi built-in! Don't be fooled by its innocent looks, the SP5m is more than just a Typhoon with a new shell and WiFi slapped on it. It also sports a beautiful QVGA screen and runs the latest version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile for Smartphone devices, 5.0. The wildly successful Typhoon set the record as the smallest Smartphone on the market. It was a breakthrough device, providing users with the power of Windows Mobile, and a battery that wouldn't quit after a couple hours of use, all in an ultra slim package. Can the SP5m successfully build on the Typhoon foundation? You will have to read on for the full review and find out! Read more...

iMate SP3 To Be Available In North America Soon.

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 03:41 PM

http://www.soundsolutionsam.com/

Joseph Hoyle from Sound Solutions wrote us an email to inform us that they will be the exclusive North American distributor of the iMate Smartphone 3. I was unable to get an estimated price for the phone. However, when I asked about the availability of the iMate, he mentioned it will be available in early September, and "any day". :D I was also told that pre-orders are available from the web site, but I was unable to find that page. :( I did find the 2 page PDF that lists all the specs for the phone! Man, this is one sweet phone. :D

Orange C500, Qtek 8010, And Now iMate 3, Dopod 565

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 10:15 AM

http://msmobiles.com/news.php/2947.html

As we've mentioned before, it looks like the Orange c500 will also be available from Qtek, as the 8010. Now it appears that Carrier Devices (better known for their iMate brand of Smartphones) are going to carry the phone under the name iMate Smartphone 3. If that wasn't enough, MSMobiles.com reported earlier today about a Chinese company called Dopod that will also be selling the phone; Dopod 565.

This is big, big news. I think it's safe to say that this phone will reach the North American market one way or another. It would be nice to see a carrier pick it up and offer it for free with a monthly plan. :D Moto-who? :wink:

MTekk IT Reviews iMate Smartphone 2

Posted by David McNamee in "ARTICLE" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.mtekk.com.au/browse/page546.html

Matt over at MTekk IT does a very nice review of the iMate Smartphone 2 (AKA SPV e200, QTek 8080, O2 XPhone). This incarnation of the phone is being distributed by Carrier Devices and will be available from Telestra.

"In doing this review, I've tried to judge the phone against my existing QTek 7070, but I have to say at the outset - there is no comparison. This phone wins hands down."

iMate Smartphone 2 for $616 USD

Tek 'n Toys has started to move significant volumes of iMate 2 Smartphones, so we're seeing some really significant price drops. As far as I know, $616 USD is one of the better prices around for the iMate Smartphone 2 (shouldn't that be the iMate 2 Smartphone?). This phone is also known as the E200 from Orange - Smartphone 2003 OS, Bluetooth, built-in camera, 32 MB of SDRAM and 64 MB of Flash, 2.5-3.5 hours of talk time, 65-90 hours of standby, GPRS class B, and SDIO support. All the fixins'! [Affiliate]
