A Fresh Start...

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Talk" @ 05:00 AM

As many of you know, a few weeks ago I received a brand new Motorola Q9h. Since that time I have been so busy with work as well as my review of the handset... and saying farewell to my favorite MiniDV video camera which had a tragic death during the filming of my review (which will now be done in written format), that I have not really had a chance to sit done and do the dreaded ritualistic ceremony of installing all of my favorite applications on my new toy. Since I am starting from scratch, I thought it would be a good idea to see what applications the readers of this site use on a daily basis, or could not live without. I'm always up for trying something new so if there are any suggestions that you guys and gals have, I would love to hear them!

CAB Install DCV: Install CAB Files From Windows!

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.gpcarreon.com/?p=416

"Users who are new to Windows mobile-based Smartphone often ask why by clicking on a CAB, they get to see _setup.xml, XXX.001, YYY.002, ZZZ.003, etc. That is because by default, Windows XP (Explorer) opens CAB files (be it Smartphone or PPC CAB) instead of installing them. It literally opens another folder showing you the contents of the CAB. CAB Install DCV on the other hand installs CAB via mouse double-click."

While I love my Smartphone, there are a couple of features that Microsoft did not implement into the user experience that leave me completely baffled. Installing CAB files from Windows happens to be one of those features that would have made all of our lives just a little bit easier. Luckily for us, gpcarreon has created a nifty freeware program that does just that!

.Net Compact Framework 2.0 SP1 Ships With 'Install To Storage Card' Support!

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

Paul (MVP) said: "For developers such as myself, the memory requirement of .net CF 2.0 placed upon an already limited resource (particularly on Smartphone) has always been off putting. In fact, to date I have been still developing in .net CF 1.0, purely because of this problem. Installation to Storage Card resolves this issue, and is a very welcome change!"

There are so many programs out there for the Smartphone that I would love to test out and have not touched for the simple fact that they require .Net CF 2.0. On a clean install Microsoft's .Net Compact Framework took up nearly 9MB's of space! Now that we have the option to install the framework to our memory cards I can finally get around to playing with all those programs I have been missing out on. :)

Update Allows Applications that Previously Failed to Now Install on the i600

Straight from Samsung's web site is a registry update to allow you install applications that had failed to install before. The file you download is binary so I couldn't tell what changes are made to your phone but it appears to be for Verizon branded i600's. Those of you who apply this let us know how it works for you. :)

i600 Patch Will Let You Install All Apps

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:35 AM

I was waiting until a few people had verified that this patch worked, especially considering the unknown source, but it seems that this is legit and likely worth trying for you i600 owners. You'll need to register at MoDaCo in order to download the file.

"This patch is ONLY for Verizon i600 with Smartphone 2002.
Use this patch at your own risks!
Make a backup of all important things before installing the patch, just in case. The patch does not hard-reset the phone, but better safe than sorry.
This MoDaCo post and its content are not officially approved by Verizon, Samsung or Microsoft."
