Microsoft Introduces Surface Computing and a New Way to Share Content

Posted by Darius Wey in "HARDWARE" @ 11:10 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/surface/

"Picture a surface that can recognize physical objects from a paintbrush to a cell phone and allows hands-on, direct control of content such as photos, music and maps. Today at the Wall Street Journals D: All Things Digital conference, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer will unveil Microsoft Surface, the first in a new category of surface computing products from Microsoft that breaks down traditional barriers between people and technology. Surface turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, dynamic surface that provides effortless interaction with all forms of digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. Beginning at the end of this year, consumers will be able to interact with Surface in hotels, retail establishments, restaurants and public entertainment venues. The intuitive user interface works without a traditional mouse or keyboard, allowing people to interact with content and information on their own or collaboratively with their friends and families, just like in the real world. Surface is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that small groups can use at the same time. From digital finger painting to a virtual concierge, Surface brings natural interaction to the digital world in a new and exciting way."

Okay, I admit to being intrigued by Microsoft Surface. You could dismiss this as just another bit of vapourware being shown off by Microsoft Research, but (and might I add - unsurprisingly, considering Microsoft has dropped hints of touch-based computing over the past few years) it turns out that this product is very real and will be deployed by a number of partners by the end of the year (for example, "customers in T-Mobile retail stores might place different cell phones on Surface's interactive surface where product features, prices and phone plans would appear so they could be easily compared"). As far as Smartphone Thoughts is concerned, Microsoft Surface could offer new ways for your Windows Mobile-based device to interact with itself and other neighbouring devices, and if it ever proves to work flawlessly, I'd say ActiveSync and the Windows Mobile Device Center ought to take a page out of Surface's book. ;)

Check out the press images and screen grabs above and below, and do stop by the Microsoft Surface web site and Channel 10 to see what all the fuss is about. Direct interaction, multi-touch, multi-user, and object recognition? I'd say the real "wow" starts now.

Samsung Introduces Optical Joystick on Mobile Phone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/PressRelease/PressRelease.asp?seq=20061219_0000307505

"Samsung Electronics , a leading provider and innovator of mobile phones, launches the world's first mobile phone featuring a n optical joystick for a whole new mobile experience. Samsung 's latest Optical Joystick' Phone (Model: SCH-V960 ) is suited with the latest technology that may revolutionize the way users interact with the menu and user interface of mobile handsets. Users utilize the optical joystick key by placing their finger and moving a cursor to navigate through the menu, similar to a cursor of a mouse on a PC . Optical sensors will read and react to users' finger movement, thus breaking down the traditional four-way menu navigation and providing 360 degrees of freedom. The familiarity and free movement of the V960's Optica l Joystick will result in quick and hassle-free menu navigation."

User submitted image

Here's an interesting new feature from Samsung. I'm not sure if an optical sensor would be any good for the gamers out there, but it has to be better than having another phone with flaky joysticks. No word on when we'll see this technology in a Windows Mobile device. Here's hoping it's not that far off.

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 08:00 AM

"Dopod International Corporation (hereinafter Dopod International) and Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced the availability of BlackBerry Connect software on the 838Pro and the C720W devices for customers in Asia. (HTC) and RIM, Dopod International will offer BlackBerry Connect to enable customers of the Windows Mobile-based 838Pro Pocket PC and the C720W smartphone to access popular BlackBerry services with support for both BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Service"

User submitted image

This is probably the best thing that could happen to BlackBerry users. While just in Asia right now, they will soon be able to access Blackberry services on Windows Mobile devices. I may not like the BlackBerry but I have to acknowledge they are very popular. I'm certain this will spread to the western hemisphere as well. BlackBerry users out there, what do you think of this?

Samsung Introduces VGA 1.98" LCD Screen

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.samsung.com/PressCenter/PressRelease/PressRelease.asp?seq=20060607_0000261768#

"Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world's largest provider of thin-film transistor, liquid crystal display ( TFT -LCD) panels, announced today that it has developed the industry's first 1.98 LCD panel to achieve VGA resolution, using the company's amorphous silicon (a-Si) technology. Mobile phones equipped with this new, display will be able to show Windows screens and documents with the same VGA quality that is provided by most desktop or notebook PCs."

User submitted image

The press release goes on to talk about the pixels per inch on this new screen. Typical 40" HD LCDs have around 40 pixels per inch (ppi). This new 1.98" screen had 10 times as many - 400 ppi. That's insane! You're phone will have a better, crisper screen than your 40" HD TV! I got to get me one of these screens.

Bluetake Introduces New Bluetooth Stereo Headphones

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=5481

"The i-PHONO mini headphone allows users to anwser or make a phone call while listening to music. Besides the Bluetooth A2DP for stereo wireless transmission and the Bluetooth HSP/HFP for handsfree communication, the i-PHONO mini headphone also supports Bluetooth AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile), meaning consumes can use the i-PHONO mini headphone remote control (ex. Play, Pause, Next, Previous...) media device if the paired source also supports AVRCP."

User submitted image

I am fascinated by the remote control aspect of this. Does anyone have any experience with AVRCP? I really like the idea of wireless stereo earphones. Most of the time when I'm listening to music I'm at the gym and the wires are always in the way.

TinyThings - #1 - Mike Hall Introduces Windows CE, XP Embedded, and Mobile

Posted by Jerry Raia in "DEVELOPER" @ 11:00 AM

http://neopoleon.com/tinythings/blogs/main/archive/2005/10/31/3.aspx

"In this, the first (inaugural (primordial)) episode of TinyThings, I went up to Redmond, Washington to visit Mike Hall in his office and chat about everything. Since this is the first episode, and since I'm assuming that there are some (quite a few (billions?)) of people in the world who don't know a whole heck of a lot about developing for devices using various flavors of Windows, I wanted to get the bird's eye, introductory view of the landscape from Mike, and he delivered."

Lots of developer information coming out these days. Here is more for you bit twidlers. :)

Venturi Wireless Introduces 3G Optimization for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:45 AM

http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/news/2005/jul/20/news1.html

"The VClient for Smartphones and Pocket PCs brings the full benefits of Venturi's patented optimization technology to data-enabled handsets and mobile devices. With the Venturi VClient installed on the device, subscribers can experience significant improvements in the speed and reliability of their data applications. Consumers and business users can browse the Web, send and receive emails, view videos, download music files, and access critical business applications as much as seven times faster when compared to standard wireless speeds. Beyond faster speeds, the VClient also enhances the user experience by maintaining wireless data connections in poor coverage areas where connection time-outs frequently occur and data sessions are often dropped. The VClient, a key component of the Venturi Wireless Optimization Solution, connects to the Venturi optimization servers that sit in the mobile carrier's network."

Where's a 3G network when you need one? ;) This sounds like it would be great addition to any device. Unfortunately, to enjoy the benefits that this VClient offers, you'll need a Venturi-Optimized provider.

Samsung Introduces Speech-To-SMS Mobile Phones

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THE COMPETITION" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=3875

"Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2005 (CES), the Samsung's p207 is the first phone with the new VoiceMode technology that allows consumers to simply speak the words of a message and have the phone translate those exact words into text. This voice activated text messaging application allows users to quickly and easily address the message then use their voice to create text, bringing virtually hands-free and eyes-free communication to text messaging. The QuickPhrase feature debuting on Samsung's a890 makes it easy for consumers to address a message and activate one of the frequently used short messages pre-programmed in the phone. Once in the messaging application, users can activate phrases such as "Call me" or "Will call you later" by simply speaking those words, and the text is included in the message."

At first I thought this was really cool, even if it wasn't a Windows Mobile phone. However, after reading and re-reading this, I think it's nothing more than a voice activated macro. Just like voice dialing where you record a voice tag for a predefined number. If it could actually translate what I'm saying into a text message, then that would be cool. :)

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 01:30 PM

PalmSource Introduces Palm OS Cobalt 6.1 For The Smartphone Market

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THE COMPETITION" @ 03:30 AM

http://palmsource.com/press/2004/092804_cobalt.html

"PalmSource, Inc. provider of Palm OS, a leading operating system powering next generation mobile devices and smartphones, today introduced Palm OS Cobalt 6.1, an enhanced version of Palm OS Cobalt. Designed to accelerate the development of next-generation Palm Powered smartphones and wireless devices, Palm OS Cobalt 6.1 builds on the foundation of Palm OS Cobalt and provides integrated telephony features, support for WiFi and Bluetooth and enhancements to the user interface. Palm OS Cobalt 6.1 offers new functionality aimed at Palm OS licensees looking to participate in the growing wireless market, while maintaining the flexibility, ease-of-use and compatibility that are the hallmarks of Palm Powered wireless devices."

PalmSource the maker of Palm OS for the handhelds has decided that it's time to get serious about the smartphone market. Looks like the competitor to Microsoft in the mobile arena, has learnt from it's past mistakes. Palm OS lost a huge chunk of the handheld market when it failed to realize the importance of the features offered on the Pocket PC devices, features as basic as color screens, SDIO, Bluetooth and WiFi. PalmSource with the release of Cobalt 6.1, now has an OS that is on par with Windows Mobile for Smartphones. The update does not seem to offer any revolutionary features but is supposed to help the device manufacturers quickly put together a Palm OS based smartphone. It will be interesting to see how the battle for the smartphone throne unfolds.

Fonix Introduces VoiceIn 4.0 SE - Speech Recognition SDK

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.fonix.com/page.cfm?name=news&id=1491

"Fonix Corporation, an innovative communications and technology company providing integrated telecommunications services and value-added speech technologies, announces the newest version of our proprietary automatic speech recognition (ASR) SDK. Fonix VoiceIn 4.0 SE (Standard Edition) is immediately available to developers looking to implement cutting-edge ASR-driven applications to devices and products."

The Speech Recognition SDK which is compatible with Smartphones and Pocket PCs, will enable the next generation of hands free software to recognize voice commands. Voice recognition for mobile devices makes sense, but the current implementations are mostly limited to dialing phone numbers. Which is often easier to do the regular way. I can't wait for the day when all the mobile apps have not only some kind of speech recognition but can also speak back to me. I want to be able to say "Open Inbox..Read New Mails", while driving my car. 8) For now, I hope the pricing/licensing model is convenient for the ISVs, to quickly adopt this technology. What do you think, are voice recognition and speech capabilities worth the hype? Or do you think it is cumbersome? And what about the social implications, people talking on the phones in a subway is bad enough, and thanks to this technology we will be bothered by people 'talking to' the phone.

Motorola Introduces New and Innovative iTAP Version 6.0 Text Input Solution for Mobile Handsets

Posted by Jason Dunn in "THOUGHT" @ 04:16 PM

http://www.motorola.com/mediacenter/news/detail/0,,3655_3052_23,00.htm

"The Lexicus Division of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), a leading provider of text input software solutions, today announced the availability of iTAP 6.0 Intelligent Text Entry System. iTAP 6.0 is a new text input method for mobile handsets that adapts to a users pattern of communications to reliably predict and suggest entire sentences based on past usage. The iTAP 6.0 system becomes more accurate over time and makes composing entire sentences and paragraphs, intuitive, easy, and personalized.

The iTAP system requires only one key touch to select a letter, and also proposes the next word you intend to add to your message or note. By using past text input and the context of where this text was entered, iTAP 6.0 software goes far beyond simply remembering unique words, slang and abbreviations and suggests entire sentences."

T9 on steroids! :-D This is welcome news, because even though I'm moderately fast at T9 now, overall it's still a very slow method of text input for me. Predicting entire sentences is an excellent evolution of the T9-based system, but I wonder how they'll handle displaying multiple sentences on the screen at once?
