HTC Patent Shows Off New Slider Concept

Posted by Darius Wey in "NEWS" @ 09:00 AM

http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph...=DN/20080064448

The concept of an integrated number keypad and QWERTY keyboard is neat, although I'm not sure if the design is a winner. The device seems a little long, but probably can't be much longer than existing Pocket PCs (or should I say, Windows Mobile Professional devices) with slide-out QWERTY keyboards. And the diagonal-sliding display? Let's hope it manages to stay securely in place even after months of use. Your thoughts on this one?

Motorola Q9h Unboxing Teaser

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone News" @ 06:07 PM

I have fantastic news. I just sat down by my desk after a nice hearty lunch to find my brand new Motorola Q9h waiting for me. This is not the AT&T version, so their are a few tiny differences compared to our recent offering from the "Powers That Be" in AT&T Headquarters. For one, the packaging is different and as well as the name and nowhere throughout the packaging is the word "Global" used. Not a big deal, but I figured it would be nice to clue everyone in on this before I show the images.

Now that we have taken care of the disclaimer, it is time for a quick sneak peak at the unboxing on this surprisingly nice handset!

AdapTex for 12 Keypad Smartphone Released

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.adaptexlive.com/?node_id=3.1.3.2&id=30

"Your 12-key Smartphone is designed to allow you to compose and edit documents on the go, creating a valuable mobile office experience. AdapTex transforms this data entry from a time consuming chore into a highly efficient activity, making it simple to write SMS, Instant Messages, documents and more with relevant, contextual suggestions from AdapTex."

If you are about to throw your T9 equipped phone out the window this might be a solution. The only demo I could see was a little animated sequence comparing the T9 and AdapTex methods. It is worth taking a look at if you are seeking an alternative to T9.

Concept Windows Mobile Phone with Fastap Keypad

Posted by Darius Wey in "HARDWARE" @ 03:00 AM

User submitted imageClick the image above for a larger version.Kris Kringle visited us recently to deliver some conceptual renderings of a Windows Mobile phone with a Fastap keypad. The contents of the display suggest it's a Pocket PC Phone, while the buttons (note the Home and Back buttons at the bottom of the keypad) suggest it's a Smartphone. Either way, we must stress that we have no knowledge of this being a real product, and thought we'd simply throw this one out there for your perusal. Check out the design (two additional shots after the break) and let us know what you think. Are you a fan of this form factor? Death of the Mobile Keypad?

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 01:00 PM

http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/0,39029453,49285216,00.htm

"If you're not familiar with the sentences 'The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human', then you obviously haven't tried to break the Guinness World Record for the shortest time required to type a 160-character SMS message."

No matter what they come up with, I will always need keyboard entry. This article mentions two different replacements. Voice and new key layout. I'm always willing to try a new key layout but would never go to a voice only data input system. There are just too many times when speaking would be too distracting. Silently keying in a message is always a great option to have. While not the focus of this article let's do a quick survey.

MobilePen Bluetooth Keypad for Cellphones and PDAs

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 09:00 AM

http://engadget.com/2006/01/10/mobilepen-bluetooth-keypad-for-cellphones-and-pdas/

"If you're looking for a little more real estate for text entry on your cellphone or PDA, you may want to take a look at the MobilePen, a Bluetooth keypad that works with any Windows Mobile or Series 60 device. In addition to providing a screen-based QWERTY keypad, it also offers handwriting recognition in both English and Chinese."

Yes this thing apparently works on Smartphones. It also costs a whopping $430! These guys are out of their tree. You could buy a nice Pocket PC for that. This made me think though. Why doesn't somebody make a program that would allow you to use your Pocket PC input (keypad or screen) on your Smartphone?

Smart Backlight On The MPx220 Keypad

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2005

"Normally the MPx220 has a blue keypad light which works pretty well and bright. However, in the sun or bright rooms you don't need a background light for the keypad at all and here the device switches-off the backlight. The sensor is on the bottom of the front, left from the "MPx220" writing."

Arne Hess, over at PPCW.net while working on the MPx220 review discovered a clever feature that the Motorola folks have implemented to conserve battery power. Read about the smart backlight feature on the keypad and the feature which enables you to view self-portrait from the camera on the external screen. The features are truly ingenious but I am more amazed by Arne's following statement "Please note that these features might not be available in all the Beta ROM versions out there right now". Wish I had that problem to worry about, I am still waiting for the WM2003 upgrade for my MPx200.
