Mobile Line of Business Solution Accelerator

Posted by Jerry Raia in "DEVELOPER" @ 01:00 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2006/08/23/709717.aspx

"The Mobile Line of Business Accelerator showcases a mobile application written in Visual C# using Visual Studio 2005. This development kit contains over 100 pages of documentation, a sample SQL Server DB, and all of the necessary components to run a Windows Mobile application. It provides best practices for deploying enterprise-level Merge Replication to support thousands of devices. Using the Microsoft tools outlined and this development kit, you can develop a robust, scalable, and compelling mobile application for your field work force."

I just have one question here. Can a Blackberry do any of these things? It is an honest one as I have not paid close attention to what goes on in the DarkSide. Those of you interested in development might find this worth a look. Courtesy of Jason Langridge.

izenMobile to Offer New Converged Handset that Blurs the Pocket PC/Smartphone Line

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.i-zenmobile.hotshotwebdesign.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=49&Itemid=53

"The izenMobile handsets will be unique in the marketplace. The initial handset available at the introduction is the izenMobile Krma, which combines pocket pc functionality with a smart phone form factor. Additional handsets will be introduced throughout the year, with up to seven models available at a time. The izenMobile handset lineup will incorporate F-Origin technology to provide maximum mobile productivity."

izenMobile is looking to seriously blur the line between the Smartphone and Pocket PC devices with their first handset. It runs Windows Mobile Pocket PC but has the physical look of a Smartphone including the all too familiar keypad. The current specs on this handset are pretty good, but you never know what will change between now and the release of this device. It has a 2 megapixel camera with a flash, 2.2" LCD screen, FM Radio, Bluetooth, Tri-band (900/1800/1900), and it will support for WiFi via miniSD card.

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 05:00 PM

"If your HTC-branded TyTN just doesn't feel complete without the matching branded range of accessories, it looks like HTC feels your pain. Browsing on over to the company's European site, a couple of accessories have popped up with more promised in the pipeline: the BH S100 A2DP headset and BH M100 mono Bluetooth headset, both with expected August availability."

HTC Star Trek Multiple Line Tweak

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=242936

For all of you that managed to get your hands on HTCs latest Smartphone marvel, the Star Trek, you might be interested in this new registry tweak that allows you to easily toggle between lines.

encece said: HKLM > System > State > Phone > MultiLine Capabilities > 1

Done

Press and Hold # to switch between Line 1 and Line 2

I made the registry change on my SP5m, but I don't have multiple lines, so I can't say if it worked or not. Does anyone else want to give it a try and report back? Note: Standard registry editing warning applies. One wrong move and you could be looking at a hard reset for your device. ;)

Where to Draw Line When Street Ads Give You a Ring

Posted by Kris Kumar in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 03:30 AM

http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/05/07/yourmoney/mobilead08.php

"Sometime in the next few weeks, French billboards will be able to speak to your mobile phone - but only with your permission. People with certain kinds of phones who download a special software program and say they want to participate will receive digital advertising when the phone is near the billboards. It is the latest twist in the budding niche of mobile marketing, wherein the cellphone becomes a conduit not just for communications but also for commerce. ... The difference with the new project, said Albert Asseraf, director of strategy, research and marketing at JCDecaux, the outdoor-advertising company behind the project, is that consumers consent to receive alerts about digital advertising as they move through the city"

Personally I don't like the idea of receiving any form of advertising on my cell phone, but have to admit that the concept behind the French billboards is one of the best that I have heard of. The system allows you to opt-in and lets you even specify your preferences. The best part is that you have to install a special application, which means if you are like me and don't like advertisements on your cell phone, then you just don't install the application. Though I am scared that scheming carriers might pre-install it on your cell phone, they might entice you with free ring-tones and movie trailers, and in return collect money from the advertising companies. Let's hope that this technology evolves into an in-store product information system. Nowadays while shopping I occasionally take photos of the product packaging, so that I can research it once I get home. A system similar to the French billboard can make that task easy.

Game Over - Nokia's nGage Meets the End of the Line

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THE COMPETITION" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=177

"Nokia has announced that they will not be developing updated versions of the N-Gage. This funky cell phone/portable gaming machine was released in October 2003 after a massive marketing campaign to promote the N-Gage as the "new" and "extreme" cell phone that is also a gaming machine. Antti Vasara, Nokias vice president for corporate strategy admits, " N-Gage is still being sold but it was not a success in the sense of developing a new category. We learned that people want to play games an all devices. As such we are integrating the gaming software into Series 60 phones."

User submitted image

Mobile phone gaming has just taken a turn for the worst, or has it? Did the nGage fail because it was a poorly designed gaming device/phone? Or did it fail because people want their phones to be phones first, and gaming devices second - or third/fourth/fifth? You decide. ;)

Kingston Launches New Line of "SD Ultimate" Cards with 133x Write Speeds

Posted by Jason Dunn in "HARDWARE" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.kingston.com/press/2005/digitalmedia/05a.asp

"Kingston Technology Company, Inc. today announced the further expansion of its Secure Digital (SD) Card product line with the release of new ultra-performing 'Ultimate' SD cards, initially shipping in 512-MB and 1-GB capacities. The new SD Ultimate cards offer significant performance benefits over the current Standard and Elite Pro lines of SD cards, including 133X super-fast transfer rates of larger size files-ideal for the shooting demands of professional digital photographers...Many current devices are sold with an 'X' speed rating, much like CD-ROM drives, to give users a performance indicator of how fast the card can transfer (read and/or write) images. Some manufacturers use 'X' to indicate read or write speeds; others use both as 'data transfer' and a few manufacturers do not define their cards' speed at all. Kingston X-speed ratings are based on 'write' speed and X-speed performance is a function of MegaBytes per second (MB/sec) of write speed. Higher X-speed ratings equal faster cards. "

Kingston sent me one of these to test, so expect to see a Quick Look article posted soon!

This is great news! I think it's fair to say the Microsoft is starting to make a significant impact in this market. 2004 was a great year with lots of Windows Mobile Smartphone activity, and I think in 2005 it's only going to get better. 8)

Norwegian Cruise Line First To Offer Onboard Mobile Phone Service

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=3201

"The new technology is expected to be introduced on the Norwegian Sun from September, and could be available fleet-wide within a year. The offering combines satellite and wireless services, enabling passengers to make and receive calls on their own cell phones with their own phone numbers while in international waters."

Land, Air or Water, no matter where you are, you can rest assured that your Smartphone will work seamlessly. While I am not sure if your spouse will like the idea of you using the Smartphone on the next cruise vacation to check E-Mails and answer calls. But I am pretty pleased to know that "I can!"

Debugging .NET Compact Framework Applications Using The Command Line Debugger

Posted by Mike Temporale in "DEVELOPER" @ 11:30 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/davidklinems/archive/2004/06/22/163029.aspx

David Kline is a developer at Microsoft where he has been working on .Net CF. David has recently joined the growing list of bloggers coming out of Microsoft, and he has wasted no time in sharing information that any .NET CF developer would fine extremely valuable.

"I've gotten a number of requests for instructions on how to use the .NET SDK's command line debugger (cordbg.exe) to debug NetCF applications. While you would think this should be pretty straight forward, there are a number of hoops to jump through."
