Good Announces Version 5 of Their Mobile Messaging Suite

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=200000615

"Good Mobile Messaging 5.0, is a best-of-both-worlds tool that "gives IT everything they could ever want" in terms of centrally controlling any policy over remote devices, while "not impairing users' ability to get stuff done on the smartphone." To a large degree that means managing applications. The new software allows IT departments to require all devices to use mandatory applications, such as virus-protection software, and to ban the launch of blacklisted applications not meeting company guidelines. Good 5 also allows advanced password and encryption management and the temporary lockdown of possibly compromised devices -- rather than a complete shutdown and erase requiring the full reinstalling of software if the device is recovered."

Good has stepped things up a notch with their latest release, providing IT departments with more tools to manage the ever increasing mobile work force. I've never used Good Messaging - I did use the Good MP3 player for the Handspring Visor, but that was a long time ago, before Good found their true calling. ;) Anyone here use Good? How do you like it compared to Microsoft's Direct Push?

Indian Firm Takes Aim at Instant Messaging Market with mundu IM V4

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:00 AM

http://news.monstersandcritics.com/india/news/article_1282195.php/Indian_firm_takes_aim_at_instant_messaging_market

"Online chatting in cyberspace is a hugely popular form of communication, especially among the young, and an Indian firm has major ambitions in this sector by cashing in on mobile instant messaging (IM). Geodesic Information Systems Limited has just released the latest version 4.0 of its Mundu IM software, a development that drew attention from California, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore and elsewhere. It provides comprehensive mobile IM with the ability to 'cross-conference' across a wide range of otherwise-segregated online chat tools like AIM, MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Google Talk and Yahoo. A user can be logged into any or all of these services at the same time. The product links all these together on a single user-friendly interface. But more than that, it takes chat to mobile phones, instead of keeping it restricted to computers alone."

User submitted image

Mundu IM V4 is loaded with features. It offers impressive interoperability across all the popular IM platforms - AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ and Jabber, from a single easy-to-use interface. If you IM a lot, and have multiple IM accounts then it is time to consolidate them. For more information or to purchase mundu IM V4 click here. Trial version is also available. We would like to hear from our readers about this IM software.

Update: Jason has managed to shoot a nice video of the mundu IM V4 in action at the CTIA 2007. Head over to his CTIA Blog to check it out. :)

Revolutionizing Mobile Instant Messaging With Mundu IM

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:30 PM

https://messenger.mundu.com/

"Geodesic, an innovator in mobile communication applications, today launched the latest version 4.0 of its market leading product Mundu IM. Marking a significant step forward in improving the mobile communication experience, Mundu IM V4 is the most comprehensive mobile instant messaging product in the market. Mundu IM gives users the exclusive ability to cross-conference friends, colleagues and family across AIM, MSN, and Yahoo IM services through a single chat window on Palm and Windows Mobile Smartphone platforms."

I'm pleased to see a variety of instant messaging applications emerging in the Windows Mobile Smartphone (Standard) world. As QWERTY keyboard handsets become more readily available it just makes sense that there would be more offerings for services such as this. If you do decide to purchase this application please be aware that the $11.00 price tag for lifetime use does not include lifetime upgrades, just minor ones. I point this out because the wording on their website seems a bit like doublespeak. ;)

Cingular Will Raise Its Text Messaging Rate By 50%

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 05:09 PM

http://www.textually.org/textually/archives/2007/01/014588.htm

"It should go down, but from January 21st, Cingular Wireless will raise the text-messaging rate it charges customers without a monthly texting plan to 15 cents per message sent or received, an increase of 5 cents. "The rise comes two months after an identical move by Sprint Nextel Corp., which also raised the rate for pay-as-you-go texting from 10 cents to 15 cents per message," reports the IndyStar. "Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA each charge 10 cents per message sent or received without a texting plan."

Yikes, looks like it is time to hop on a text messaging plan if you have not done so already. If you are a Cingular customer using a Smartphone, there is no reason why you should not already have the MEdia Max 200 Bundle feature plan added to your account. The MEdia Max 200 Bundle includes unlimited MEdia Net, unlimited access to Cingular Video and 200 messages for only $19.99 a month! :)

HTC S620 - Mobile Messaging Fit for a King

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.europe.htc.com/products/htcs620.html

"The stylish HTC S620 makes light work of hand-held email and document management on the go. This slim and compact messaging smartphone is one of the sharpest tools for business and busy people. Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone with Direct Push technology gives you instant access to your emails, calendar and contacts anytime."

User submitted image

The Excalibur is now officially known as the HTC S620 Smartphone and features a built-in QWERTY keyboard, a large 2.4 inch QVGA landscape display, Quad-band EDGE/GPRS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2 with wireless stereo, 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, MicroSD, HTC's ExtUSB connector, and HTC's new JOGGR technology (jog touch strip on the side of the device). It measures in at 111.5mm (L) x 62.5mm (W) x 12.8mm (T). HTC's website also claims that this device will support viewing of your Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF documents - most likely using a third party solution. The specs are pretty much what we expected when we first posted about this device back at the end of July. So, I'm in - who else is going to get one? 8)

Employers may be Liable for Always-On Messaging Addiction

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2006Aug/bpd20060824038155.htm

"Many of us have thought of the BlackBerry as an addictive entity, but that belief may now have been validated by a study done by Gayle Porter and David Vance of Rutgers-Camden University and Nada Kakabadse of the University of Northampton in the United Kingdom. What is even more interesting about the study is that it suggests that this addiction may leave employers legally liable depending on whether the employer manipulates an individual's desire to work harder for the employer or whether the employee does it on his or her own for personal gain."

This could be a very interesting development. I know a number of people who are told by their employer that they must carry a BlackBerry device (of course it doesn't matter what type of always on messaging device it is). Over the last year, it's clearly effected them. Now they can't stand to let an email go unanswered for more than a couple minutes. Where as they used to get along just fine without it a short 12 months ago. Remember everyone, turn off your device from time to time. It will do you some good. ;)

OMG, Instant Messaging Doesn't Hurt Syntax! LOL!

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:08 AM

http://www.news.utoronto.ca/bin6/060731-2474.asp

"With 80% of Canadian teenagers using instant messaging and adopting its unique linguistic shorthand, many teachers and parents are concerned about the medium's potential to corrupt kids' grammar. But instant messaging doesn't deserve its bad reputation as a spoiler of syntax, suggests a new study from the University of Toronto. U of T linguists Sali Tagliamonte and Derek Denis studied over 70 Toronto teenagers and compared their use of language both in speech and while using instant messaging. They will present their research at the Linguistics Society of Canada and the United States Annual Meeting on August 2."

Jon Westfall has started an intriguging discussion over at Pocket PC Thoughts on the finds of this article. Are teens just using language in a different manner? Should we be concerned? Tell us what you think!

Exchange 2003 Mobile Messaging Part 1 - A Look at the Microsoft DirectPush Technology

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-2003-Mobile-Messaging-Part1-Microsoft-DirectPush-technology.html

"One of the most interesting features available in Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 is without doubt the new DirectPush technology (aka AUTD v2), which improves the mobile messaging experience for your end-users by providing close to real over the air (OTA) push technology. In this article, which is the first in a 5 part article series on mobile messaging using Exchange 2003 with SP2 applied and mobile devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) installed, well take a closer look at the new DirectPush technology."

User submitted image

MSExchange.org has a very interesting article up that takes us inside of Exchange 2003 SP2 and AUTD. If you were ever interested in learning how Microsoft's DirectPush technology works than this article is a step in the right direction. :)

Text Messaging is Not as Secure as you may Think

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 01:30 PM

http://www.edgelib.com/index.php?node=687

"A recent SMS fiasco of our own reminded us that those text messages don't always make it to their intended recipient, and it sounds like a certain Stan Bubrouski could be reading a few of those transmissions at this very moment. Seems that since he set his Verizon username as "null" back in 2001, he's been receiving a whole bunch of messages not quite intended for him, including everything from "call mom," to school grades, to massive tests by OnStar and ESPN. Supposedly Verizon is now looking into the issue, and none to soon now that Stan is getting SSNs and credit card info, a sign of the increased use of the not so reliable tech."

I don't use text messages all that much, and I would never send my credit card info through a text message. But that's just me. We all know that the popularity of Text Messages is on the rise, and there is little chance it's going to go away anytime soon. So perhaps this story can serve as a lesson for those who send a lot of messages. To the best of my knowledge there is no encryption on Text Messages. So please, don't put any personal information in them. ;)

3GSM 2006: Microsoft Announces Global Partner Support for its Mobile Messaging Solutions

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 10:05 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/feb06/02-12GlobalPartnerSupportPR.mspx

"Today at 3GSM World Congress 2006, Microsoft Corp. and its mobile operator and device-maker partners announced a broad range of services and Windows Mobile-based devices for business customers to cost-effectively deploy mobile messaging solutions. Leveraging the integration between Direct Push technology in Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), businesses can mobilize their employees on a unified infrastructure without the requirement to pay for additional and costly e-mail servers. This same technology is now available for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server and is also offered as a hosted service by a number of mobile operators around the world."

User submitted image

I have summarized the key points mentioned in this press release:
Palm Inc., i-Mate, Cingular Wireless, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone will provide free upgrades to the MSFP for all their Windows Mobile 5.0 customers, enabling Direct Push functionality and providing enhanced device management and security for messaging applications.
The HP iPAQ hw6900 Mobile Messenger, the Gigabyte Communications g-Smart, the ASUS P305 3G-enabled Smartphone, and the Fujitsu Siemens FS Pocket Loox will ship with the MSFP. :-)
HTC Corp. has unveiled a new product portfolio of Windows Mobile-based devices that are Direct Push-enabled and will be made available globally to T-Mobile and other operators beginning in the second quarter of this year.
The Cingular 2125 Smartphone and 8100 series Pocket PCs will receive the MSFP update in the first half of this year.
T-Mobile has announced upgrades to MSFP for Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices in its European network portfolio. Folks in the Netherlands should check this related press release.
Associated Press has published a nice write-up on why this partnership between Microsoft, and the carriers and the device manufacturers spells trouble for BlackBerry.

Sony Ericsson Unveils the Slim M600 Messaging Cellphone

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:00 AM

http://phonearena.com/htmls/Sony-Ericsson-unveils-the-slim-M600-messaging-cellphone-article-a_1024.html

"Sony Ericsson has unveiled its new slim messaging mobile phone M600. The device is the second handset from Sony Ericsson to be equipped with Symbian 9.1 OS and UIQ 3.0. The tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz)/UMTS (2100 MHz) phone is only 15mm thick, which makes it one of the slimmest business UMTS phones, known so far and a possible rival of the thin Motorola Q handset."

User submitted image

Possible rival of the Q? All they have to do is actually bring it to market! Motorola may have a winner with the Q but they actually have to sell them to win. The Verizon version has been pushed back to April and there is no word on what happened to the GSM version. Motorola, this should be your wake-up call.

TechNet Webcast: Managing Windows Mobile-based Devices with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 05:30 AM

http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/WebCastEventDetails.aspx?EventID=1032285688&EventCategory=4&culture=en-US&CountryCode=US

"As mobile devices become a larger part of the information technology (IT) infrastructure, managing them becomes a greater challenge. Join this webcast to learn how device management works on the Microsoft Windows Mobile platform. See demonstrations of features and functionality, and learn how to use the components of Windows Mobile that provide device management capability. We also illustrate how you can utilize the Messaging and Security Feature Pack in an enterprise environment."

Till now we have only seen white papers and articles that describe the power of the Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile devices. This webcast I believe is the first presentation that gives visual demonstration of what the features are and how it will benefit us. I like visuals and demonstrations more than white papers. ;-) Now all we need is a chat session with the Microsoft folks.

White Paper - Messaging on Windows Mobile 5.0 Devices with Messaging and Security Feature Pack

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/features/mobility/e2k3sp2.mspx

"This white paper examines how Microsoft responds to the evolving mobility needs of your business. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 communication and collaboration server with Service Pack 2 (SP2), and Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) deliver an integrated, scalable, security-enhanced and cost-effective enterprise mobile messaging solution."

User submitted image

Microsoft has released a white paper detailing the benefits and the features that will be enabled by the use of Windows Mobile 5.0 and Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 and Messaging and Security Feature Pack (and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Mobile Web Administration tool). By now I believe everyone is sold on the benefits and features. What the folks are expecting from Microsoft and the Smartphone vendors is the formal release date for the Messaging and Security Feature Pack, which needs to be applied on the Window Mobile 5.0 devices before they can take advantage of the features detailed in the white paper. In fact it would be good if Microsoft released a white paper detailing all the components that are needed to enable direct push E-Mail and security features like remote wipe. And when these components are expected to hit the streets. Something that is not clear is, and many believe, that apart from the update for the devices, there is another update for the Exchange 2003 server, that will add the Windows Mobile 5.0 provisioning and security features. I believe it is called Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Mobile Web Administration tool. It would be good if Microsoft clarified that.

Where is the Messaging and Security Feature Pack?

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 09:00 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2005/11/05/489475.aspx

"Well If I had a pound for every email I'd had this week surrounding the availability of the Messaging and Security Feature Pack - I'd currently be holidaying at my beachfront property in the Carribean. Now we've released Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 to the Web there is a lot of confusion as to how customers get hold of the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) for their devices. Let me try and clarify this."

Jason Langridge answers the question we have all been asking. Well I wasn't asking it but I know a lot of folks were. I didn't even know I should be looking for it. At any rate if you were asking give this a read.

Sore Thumbs? Take a Break From All That Text Messaging

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/10/20/D8DC4N8O0.html

"Chris Claypool was addicted to his BlackBerry wireless handheld. Like many users, he never thought twice about pecking away at lightning speed, replying to a wave of e-mails from clients around the globe. Last year, the 37-year-old agricultural sales director from Post Falls, Idaho, noticed a throbbing sensation in this thumbs whenever he typed. He switched to tapping with his index finger, then his middle digit and finally his pinky. But his thumbs pained him to the point where he can't even press the buttons on his TV remote control. After months of aching, Claypool took a break. Now he only uses his BlackBerry to send short messages _ typing with the tip of a pencil eraser whenever his thumbs get sore."

While the article deals specifically with BlackBerry devices, the problem has also effected cellphone users who do a lot of text messaging. And it will only be getting worse as we see more and more devices focused on email and staying connected hit the market - like the Moto Q. Have any of you that do a lot of text messages noticed any pain? Any suggestion on exercises to help strengthen your thumbs and reduce the risk?

Live8 Sets Text Messaging Record

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:15 AM

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?c_id=5&ObjectID=10333974

"More than 26.4 million people from around the world sent text messages on Saturday in support of the Live 8 campaign to cancel the debts of the poorest countries, setting a world record, organizers said. ...the previous record for the most text messages sent on a single day for a single event was around 5.8 million for an episode of the television talent show "American Idol" where viewers vote for the winner."

26 million times $0.10 per message... You know, I still think it would have been more productive to charge admission to the concerts and then donate 100% of the ticket price (and SMS fees) to Africa. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how this SMS record goes. I'm sure this is just the start of things to come. This record will be broken again and again in the next couple years I am sure.

Text Messaging with the Dolphins

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:30 PM

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4559177.stm

"Dusky dolphins living off the coast of Cape Town are about to be issued with mobile phone technology. It will not be handsets though and, despite their sophisticated ability to communicate, they will not be chatting or texting each other. Instead they will have collars embedded with a mobile phone SIM card to keep track of their movements. Mobile phone technology is revolutionising the way animals - both on land and sea - are tracked. Some 200 animals in Africa, including elephants, zebras and baboons, are now tracked via SIM cards, which is a much cheaper technology than using a satellite system."

User submitted image

A whole new generation will get to enjoy Dolphins. Although, it won't be swimming with them. Kids will soon be texting with them. Just think of the stories and insight that the Dolphins will be able to share with the youth of today.

Kids Rack Up Debt With Text Messaging

Posted by Kris Kumar in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000913027107/

"Young cellphone users caught on to text messaging way before most people but it looks like some kids didnt realize the cost of their trailblazing. The New York Times talked to some that have racked up service charges in the hundreds of dollars, including one high-school student who got hit with a $150 bill I cried, she said. I felt like I lost a piece of me. Wait a minute, we are talking about cellphone charges, right?"

User submitted image

Recently we were talking about a study that suggested limiting children's cell phone usage. Now New York Times has written up an article on how young users have racked up huge cell phone bills because of the text messaging craze. 8O
