MPx200, A Really Nasty Mobile Phone!

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 06:00 PM

The title of this comes right off the ebay action page. I so enjoyed this persons passion that I would have sent him my old MPx220 if I still had it. While this is about an MPx200 I think all of you frustrated with ANY Motorola phone will be warmed as much as I was by his prose which is also straight off the action page. Please sit back relax and enjoy the read, unedited and unabridged. :D

"I went and did it again, I got another Motorola from Orange.

"Why aye man, it's much betta than the last one, these are reeealy good and don't suck at all, honest!"

Old numpty here fell for it, so let me tell you a little about the phone....
It's the suckiest phone I have ever had. It sucks so much it should have been a vacuum cleaner.

With it's USB interface and docking cradle it's possible to use this phone to crash any Operating System.
So advanced is this horrible device it can even curse Windows XP with the dreaded B.S.O.D.
One thing I did like about Motorolas was the voice recognition dialing.
They decided not to include it on this model.
Or a charger lead for a car ciggarette lighter socket.
Or a belt clip.
Another thing I liked about the previous model was the FM radio... it actually worked quite well.
They've got rid of that too. Still, I could listen to some MP3s instead.... if there was enough room to store any on this rather nasty little device.

But on the plus side, thanks to it's IR port you can now beam a telephone number to another phone or computer with an IR port in about 10 times the time it would take you to simply type it in (with your nose).
The MPx200 boasts the Windows OS, although I think "boasts" is a poor choice of word.
I can only assume that it's the fully blown version of Microsofts fattest, bloatiest Windows release to date...

"Hello Moto..... Hello?..... Moto?..... Hello?..... Oh I give up!" The CPU on the phone is powerful enough to show you your only received text message in about 15 to 20 seconds.
That doesn't sound like a long time does it? Wait 20 seconds before you read on. .
.
.
.
.
20 Seconds is just too long to wait. Any old Nokia will show you the message in about 20 miliseconds.

The memory on the phone is expandable via a new SD or MMC memory card. This is handy as the unit does not come with enough built in memory to store a phone number and a wallpaper image.

But don't let me put you off, it has some really good features like "Airplane Mode".
Using Airplane Mode you can disable the phones ability to receive or make calls, texts or email whilest leaving the phone on so that you can look at the screens crappy walpaper and get hassled by the air stewardess for not turning your phone off. The added advantage of this mode is that, when you arrive at JFK, your battery is flat.
Sat in the taxi, you really need to make some calls to let your business associates know that you've landed, but wait! No charger lead!
Whilst you're sat there in incomunicado, you can reminisce about the bad old days where you would merely turn your phone off.
The best is yet to come...
How do you turn airplane mode off? I couldn't find out from the manual and had to trawl the net. I found the answer in a forum whereby some chap with a similar phone was obviously as irate as I.
Apparently you have to hold the power button down for more than one and a half seconds but for less than two seconds as the latter turns the phone off.
Which sick, criminally insane, Motorola B*STARD dreamed that up!?
"Oh, I've turned it off again, damn!" Now another wait for about five minutes while this chunky phone boots up. "Hello Moto" it declares in a cheesy voice, yes hello again. Glad you could make it.
Let's try again. No, not long enough. "yeah I'll be with you in a minute.". Not long enough again, oh sh*t, it's turned off again! "Yeah, make that five minutes" "Hello Moto"
Pulling the battery doesn't work.
Neither does pulling the sim card
Twenty five minutes of this lunacy was what caused the crack in the outer screen. I threw it accross the room in disgust.
The threat "If you don't come out of Airplane Mode right now, I'm going to kill you!" was the only thing that worked.
Perhaps the speech recognition part of this phone has not been completely removed.

What else can I say about it?

* The earpeice is a bit intermittant so you don't know if you've connected or not, very annoying.
* Sometimes it blasts your lughole with your million decibel ringtone while your on the phone. OW!
* Using the menu to read your texts is like pulling teeth.
* The screen is crap.
* The keys bounce (when you press a key, sometimes it enters it twice so it knackers up your word).
* It doesn't learn words.
* When you open it it makes a horrible "clack" sound.
* When you close it it makes a horrible "clack" sound.
* It connects to the internet for an hour while it's closed and turned off in the swimming pool locker.. according to Orange.
* Closing it doesn't disable the keys. Really! Yes, I know!

Even the Orange tarif is crap. 30 quid a month for 60 minutes calls. That's a good night out, but not the phones' fault
No need to ask yourself "Have I got my phone" while patting your pockets. You know you've got it, because the bloody great brick is pulling your trousers down!

In summary:

* I hate it.
* I detest every atom of it's existence.
* It's creator should be tied down and eaten by ants.
* The factory that makes them should be melted by a big laser from space.
* It doesn't have a camera
* It barely functions as a phone

Do you want it? Bid Now!

You have a choice, you can bid for the phone or you can bid for a homemade DVD of it's slow demise.
I plan to use a vice, a drill, possibly an angle grinder, some flamable liquids, a blowtorch and finally a sledghammer.
I may even do the ultimate nasty and tell my wife it spent some money on some new computer bits.

Just let me know your choice, I strongly recommend the latter.
I know what your thinking, you're thinking "I could download something like that off the net".
Trust me, in my video, you'll be able to f-e-e-l the hatred, it'll be worth it.

Please allow a few days for me to produce the video.

The phone must die."

If you read this far here is the link to the actual ebay auction. As it will eventually disappear from ebay it may not be working as you read this.

Motorola MPx200 For -$10

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.buy.com/retail/wireless/product.asp?sku=160000568&loc=19062&a=&z=11201&p=1&w=

Buy.com does it again. Although this time it is not as good a deal as before. It's still worth checking out if you've been holding out on getting a Smartphone. You can get a Motorola MPx200 for $179.99 with activation. Less a $100 Buy.com Customer Appreciation Rebate and a $90 AT&T Wireless Rebate. Total cost to you: -$10.01. That's right, you can get a MPx200 and pocket $10. Pretty nice deal if you ask me.

Protect Your Brain - Use an MPx200!

Posted by David McNamee in "NEWS" @ 08:00 AM

http://reviews.cnet.com/Cell_phone_radiation_chart/4520-6602_7-1012898-1.html?tag=cnetfd.ld

CNet has posted its cell phone radiation chart. This chart shows the specific absorption rates (SAR) for cell phones available in the U.S. The phone with the lowest SAR, coming in at .2 Watts per kilogram, is the Motorola MPx 200. The other Smartphone on the list, the Samsung SCH-i600, came in with a SAR of 1.43. The phones with the highest rating, 1.55, both came from Motorola - the V120c and the V70.

Of course, nobody really knows if these numbers mean your cell phone is safe or not. I figure that if I can't heat my dinner with my phone, then it's probably safe!

MPx200 Reviewed on ExtremeMhz.com

Posted by David McNamee in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 06:26 PM

http://www.extrememhz.com/smartphone-p1.shtml

There is a terrific review of the Motorola MPx200 at ExtremeMhz.com. Not only does the reviewer do the usual hardware review, he reviews all the third-party software you'll need to want to leave your Pocket PC at home!

"My goal was to demonstrate that in this article. The Motorola MPX200 is an excellent first generation Smartphone that can be just as good as a Pocket PC with the proper software installed. To be quite honest, if greed didn't play a major role, many users would actually be happy with this phone for up to a couple of years at least."

MPx200 Shows Up In The Netherlands

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 09:30 AM

http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?p=401189#401189

MoDaCo has learned that the MPx200 will be offered by Vodafone in the Netherlands. Nice to see the MPx200 Smartphone is gaining in popularity. I find it hard to believe that this will be replaced by anything in the near future. I have to believe that they will keep the MPx200 around as an introductory unit.

Enable Speakerphone on the MPx200

Posted by David McNamee in "HARDWARE" @ 08:00 AM

One annoyance I have with the MPx200 is that the speakerphone is not enabled the way I expect. My instinct is to tap the power button, and choose speakerphone from the quick menu. It's in the menu. However, selecting it doesn't work!

To turn on the speakerphone, hold down the green call button while in a call. The same action turns it off!

I'm sure this is covered in a manual somewhere, but who reads those?

New ROM for Motorola MPx200

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 08:45 PM

http://www.mpx200.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article

Sean over at Mobile Gadget News has found a posting in the newsgroups that talks about a new ROM for the Motorola MPx-200. It is only available on new handsets, and one of the things it fixes is the External Caller ID issues. This could be good news. It would be better if the upgrade was offered to everyone, but something is better than nothing.

abc News Weekend Warrior Reviews the Motorola MPx200

Posted by Jason Dunn in "ARTICLE" @ 07:00 PM

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/WeekendWarrior/motorola_smartphone_techtv_040305.html

"Motorola's MPx200 adheres to a philosophy I respect: No matter how sophisticated a cellphone gets, it must first and foremost be an excellent phone. It should look cool, be easy to carry, and have just the right features. Most of all, it should be easy to use. The MPx200's sleek black clamshell design and "voice-centric" single-handed operation make it both easy to manage and fun to work with. Measuring just 3.5 inches by 1.8 inches by 1 inch, the MPx200 fits comfortably into your front pocket. There's nothing to break off since it has no external antenna."

This is a short review of the MPx200, with an overall positive vibe - review Andrew Hawn likes the device, though he wishes it had better battery life (what electronic device couldn't use bettery battery life?).

MPx200.org Starts MPx200 Petition

Posted by Robert Levy in "NEWS" @ 09:00 PM

http://www.ipetitions.com/campaigns/MPx200_Upgrade/

MPx200.org has put together a petition calling for AT&T Wireless to provide a free upgrade to Smartphone 2003. Here's a quote:

Quote: The MPx200 was sold with the promise of an upgrade, not in writing on the AT&T webs site but it could be seen on many retailers web sites offering the phone for sale to be used under AT&Ts service. In addition the MPx200 does not operate/function as stated in the marketing materials and in the owners manual. On page 45 of the owners manual, the external caller ID does not work as described. On page 51 of the owners manual, you can not make calls using voice tags as described. There are more inconsistencies too including custom ring tones, the 900 band, the camera functions or lack there of, multimedia messaging... The phone was advertised as something that it is not.

Firstly, I don't know about the claim that an upgrade was promised... there have been rumors, but I never saw anything that could reasonably be confused with an official promise.

Second, let's be clear on something: AT&T Wireless has not made any announcements saying that they won't release a 2002 update to fix some of the problems or even an upgrade to 2003. I think it's jumping the gun a little bit to be starting a petition before knowing that the people you are petitioning disagree with you ;)

My final thought on this is that flat out asking for a free upgrade to Smartphone 2003 might not be the most effective approach to take here. What this petition should really be asking for (and what customers can easily argue that they deserve) are fixes to specific bugs. It's a lot easier to get angry at AT&T Wireless for not fixing major bugs than it is to get angry at them for not giving out free OS upgrades. Should AT&T Wireless determine that the best way for them to fix those bugs is to distribute upgrades to Smartphone 2003 then that's great. I and my MPx200 hope they do but an executive is more likely to pay attention to a petition requesting bug fixes as opposed to demanding a major upgrade.

That said, if you want Smartphone 2003 on your MPx200 (and I know you do), here's an opportunity to ask.

Motorola will ship MPx200 with Action Engine

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 06:00 PM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=2374

"Action Engine Corporation entered in a licensing agreement with Motorola. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola will embed Action Engine's ADS platform on the Motorola MPx200 offered by Orange. Orange serves more than 40 million customers worldwide with international operations across 21 countries.

By pre-installing Action Engine's ADS platform on newly launched smart phones such as Motorola's MPx200, companies like Motorola can provide carriers with the ability to create and deliver a unique, custom-branded suite of data services and applications to mobile subscribers. Action Engine's ADS platform also includes a robust, carrier-grade set of over-the-air provisioning capabilities that allows operators to efficiently and cost-effectively update handsets with minimal impact to end-users."

I've seen Action Engine in...action before, and it was quite impressive. Unfortunately, I've never been with a mobile carrier that has implemented it, so I have no experience using it. If memory serves, when I saw it, the software ran using a type of Web services - a very tightly controlled user experience that was extremely bandwidth friendly. In the example I saw, a user was able to book a flight, a rental car, and a hotel. The technology seemed like a good solution to a common problem, but it required a very tight level of integration and I haven't seen Action Engine implemented very widely since that first demo. Let's hope that the Orange implementation lives up to the promise!

PDA Buyer's Guide Reviews MPx200

Posted by David McNamee in "NEWS" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/motorola_MPx200.htm

PDA Buyer's Guide gives a nice rundown of the features available on the MPx200.

"This long awaited Smartphone running Microsoft Windows Mobile Smartphone 2002 hits the mark with its easy desktop syncing, full PIM software bundle and rich multimedia and gaming features. The easy data sharing and communications makes this handset an ideal choice for enterprise and power users. But strong enterprise features don't mean you have to suffer on the entertainment front. With Windows Media Player, you can enjoy MP3 music and video stored on your memory cards and served on web sites."

Todd Ogasawara has done a very detailed review of the MPx200. What sets this review apart from the others? This one is extremely detailed. Todd has many pictures showing off the device, and a list of issues, features, Tips and Hints, Developer information, and lots more.

If you have a Motorola MPx200, or if you are thinking of getting one, I think this is something that you will very useful.

infoSync Reviews the Motorola MPx200

Posted by Jason Dunn in "ARTICLE" @ 10:59 AM

http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/n/4533.html

"Motorola's MPX200 has become wildly popular despite its basic specifications; Anthony Newman finds out if it has what it takes to stand up to the competition. The MPx200 is the first Microsoft Smartphone from Motorola, the first widely-available clamshell Smartphone and was the first Smartphone to be released in the important US market. The design therefore has a lot riding on it. We discovered that although it doesn't disappoint, there is something missing."

A pretty dismal review, only 5.6 out of 10 points. :? Anthony has seen more Smartphones in person than I have, so I can only speak from my own experience, but I found the display on the MPx200 to be stunning. Rich, deep contrast, and very vibrant. He also lists the CPU as being a negative, but the MPx200 feels much faster than the Orange SPV that I have, and also faster than the SPVx (Tanager). I haven't had any "play time" with an e200 yet, so perhaps I haven't seen the best that the Windows Mobile Smartphone world has to offer, but I still take issue with much of this infoSync review. What do you think about the review?
