Motorola Ships MPx220 with Blackberry Connect for Vodacom

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 11:00 PM

http://motorola.com/mediacenter/news/detail/0,,6014_5975_23,00.html

"Motorola today announced the availability of the Motorola MPx220 running Research In Motions BlackBerry Connect software. The powerful mobile office capabilities and style of the MPx220 combined with the proven track record of Research In Motions Blackberry Connect Service delivers the ultimate productivity tool for professionals on the go. ... BlackBerry has revolutionised the way we communicate and do business in South Africa, by providing our customers with a secure data solution that combines the efficiency and features of a mobile phone with the benefits of being able to access email and attachments, as well as back-end business applications on the move. Vodacom realises that customers are constantly searching for products that offer convenience, flexibility, mobility and more importantly, secure data access, said Pieter Uys, Chief Operator Officer, Vodacom."

Motorola has done it again. This press release from Motorola has me fuming. What have they done this time? Well, BlackBerry Connect is a piece of software that enables us mortals to convert our Windows Mobile Smartphones into BlackBerry like devices. Which enables us to have best of both worlds - the power and flexibility of Windows Mobile, and the awesome push E-Mail technology of BlackBerry. Motorola was supposed to have released this software to existing MPx220 customers. Instead they have released it on the MPx220 to be sold on the Vodacom network in South Africa. I am glad that someone on this planet is getting to enjoy the benefits of BlackBerry Connect, but what about us? :( Is Motorola afraid that releasing this software now will affect the sales of its upcoming model, the Moto Q? Or is it this because of the RIM vs. NTP legal battle? Can someone please explain why Motorola is hurting its customers?

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2005/09/19/cingular-mpx220

"After a months long absence, Cingular has re-launched the Motorola MPx220 (originally launched 11 months ago). Priced at $249.99, the Windows Mobile powered smartphone is shown as now shipping."

User submitted image

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water. It's back! I wonder what ROM version this one is. I went to the Cingular web site and yes it is there in all its glory. One has to wonder after all this time what incredible improvements have been made to an already incredible phone. Any takers amongst you?

Good and Cingular to Support SMT5600 and MPx220 with GoodLink 4.5

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.good.com/index.php/pr_2005071105_g.html

"Good Technology, the leading provider of industry standards-based wireless handheld computing software and service, today announced GoodLink 4.5 for Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Smartphones. Adding to its breadth of handheld choices on the Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC, Palm and, in the future, Symbian-powered Nokia handhelds, Good will now support a greater range of line of business needs with a highly portable, cost-effective handheld platform. GoodLink 4.5 for Windows Mobile-based smartphones will initially be available on the Motorola MPx220 and Audiovox SMT5600 and supported through global carriers including Cingular Wireless in the U.S."

Wireless, always-on email is fast becoming the killer app of any mobile device, if it hasn't already, and everyone is gunning to be your always-on provider. That's Good news. The press release also mentions that "IDC forecasts 8.6 million Windows Mobile Smartphone users by year-end 2006." Which is more Good news.

Better late than never Motorola finally officially releases the long awaited new and improved solve all the problems ROM update for the MPx220. Since I don't have one of these nifty phones anymore I can't join the party but please share with us your upgrade experiences and impressions. It looks like the upgrade also gives you the ability to backup and restore certain items during the process.

Motorola Releases MPx220 ROM Update

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:45 PM

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=632337

"I just tried using the Motorola System Update tool (v1.0.0.28) with my AT&T MPx220 (ROM v.343) attached. As usual, I let it connect to the device, then connect to the internet to search for an update. Usually a red check mark says "Failed" but not this time....SURPRISE! The following message appears: This update is only for AWS devices purchased in North America. You will be updated to ROM Version 1.39.00. This tool will update the Operating System on your device."

Any MPx220 owners tried this out yet? Post your experiences!

Motorola Set to Release Another ROM Update for MPx220

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 12:30 PM

http://promo.motorola.com/mpx220/index.html

User submitted image

We just received word that Motorola is working on a new ROM upgrade for the MPx220. Apparently all of the current ROM versions, included the much loved 1.30, are not up to Cingular's sound quality standards. We can't confirm when this update will be released, but according to this website, you will be able to upgrade it yourself, or contact Cingular for a replacement. I wonder if the update will add any other features besides the improved sound quality?

Laptop Magazine Looks at the MPx220

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 07:00 PM

http://laptopmag.com/Review/Motorola-MPx220.htm

"Thanks to a snowstorm that knocked out our power, the MPx220 was our sole source of Internet access for nearly 2 days. Data performance was abysmal, and despite Motorola's claim of "harnessing the power of a desktop," we couldn't wait to get back to our PC. Simple, low-graphics Web pages typically took nearly a minute to download. On the plus side, voice quality was good on both ends of calls."

User submitted image

Sadly, I think this is the case for most devices. At least until high-speed wireless becomes the norm - which I don't expect to see happen any day soon. I don't expect many people try to use a Smartphone to fully replace their personal computer. It's a wonderful addition, but by no means is it a replacement. Overall, Motorola's second attempt at a Windows Mobile devices squeezes by with just 2.5 stars out of a maximum of 5.

Hands On With The Motorola MPx220

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/apr05/motorola.aspx

"Over a year has passed since Motorola introduced its first Windows Mobile-based Smartphone, the critically acclaimed MPx200, an affordable and stylish clam-shell device based on Microsoft's Smartphone 2002 software. Demonstrating their commitment to the Microsoft platform, Motorola has just introduced a successor to this device-the MPx220. ... Motorola makes two versions of the MPx220: one with a silver case and the other with a blackish brown exterior. Interestingly, the texture of the phone surface differs between the two models. Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to select the color of your choice-you'll have to go with the version your wireless service provider offers."

User submitted image

Pocket PC Magazine has posted the hands on review of the Motorola MPx220 by Paul O'Brien, founder of MoDaCo. The highlight of the review is this statement - "It may not be ground breaking, but the improvements over the MPx200 make it the king of the clamshell Smartphone hill!". :) And I wish I could select the color of this Smartphone at the time of purchase. The best part, since I exchanged this Smartphone twice, I could have owned the black version, then silver, and then black again. ;-)

REVIEW: Motorola Charging & Synchronization Station for MPx220

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2298

"Last week I've received - thanks to Motorola - the appropriate cradle for the MPx220 Smartphone which is, nevertheless a universal cradle for many Motorola devices, from E100 to MPx220 to V500/600. However, it can not be used for the Motorola MPx Pocket PC Phone Edition as the blister-pack says"

User submitted image

Now here is something useful from Motorola, I wonder if it actually works. Something very lacking has been a desk stand/charger for the MPx220 and it appears one is here! As the review explains it also can be used for several other Motorola phones as well. I really liked the stand that came with my old i600. How many of you MPx220 owners would want one of these?

Mobinaute.com Compares the C500 and MPx220

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 12:00 PM

Mobinaute.com has posted an interesting side-by-side feature comparison of the Motorola MPx220 and the SPV C500 Smartphones. It's not a comprehensive list, but it does cover off the major differences. If you've been wondering which phone is right for you, or perhaps you are wondering if you made the right Smartphone choice, then you should check out this article. :) (Translation courtesy of Google.)

Geekzone Motorola MPx220 Windows Mobile Smartphone Review

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=4131

"I have been using Pocket PC devices for years, but was always inclined to have an all in one device for PIM management and communications. I have experimented with Pocket PC Phone Edition devices, but I still think theyre too big to be comfortably used as a mobile phone although the latest versions, including the i-mate PDA2k (GSM/GPRS) and TNZ Harrier/Verizon XV6600 (CDMA EV-DO) include some very appealing functionality, including better Bluetooth support (headset, dial-up, networking) and high-speed internet access (on the CDMA EV-DO version)."

User submitted image

What I find interesting about this parade of reviews on the MPx220 is that the farther we get from the original disaster with the volume, the camera, BestBuy and the rest, the more favorable the review is. Those of us who went through it though will not forget how Motorola has handled the entire thing. While there is no question the phone is now working well, it is working as well as it should have the day it was released.

UNAVAILABLE: Motorola MPx220 ROM-Update Disappears "temporarily" Only?

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2269

"I just was on the Motorola MPx220 ROM update page I have written about before and for my surprise, the MPx220 ROM update is "temporary unavailable"? Hmmm, I have no idea what went wrong but maybe the ROM version 1.30.0.0 (designed for Cingular customers only) wasn't that good as expected?"

Gee, this is shocking news isn't it? While it is too soon to speculate I will anyway. I'm going to give Motorola a break here and guess something is not quite right with the install process itself. I'm going to guess that they have only had 2 months or so to work on this and it just isn't enough time. I'm going to guess that the 1.30.0.0 ROM is as solid as it has been since it came out 2 months ago. It's alright Motorola, we understand. :way to go:

Yet Another MPx220 Review

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=576

"Making use of the latest version of MS Smartphone OS, the MPx220 takes Smartphones to the next level. The device is small, solid and seemingly well made. When I got the device, I was very excited. I had opened a Cingular GSM account with three specific purposes in mind: review the Motorola MPx220 and MPx, review the i-mate PDA2k, and dump my Verizon Wireless account because they are WAY too expensive. I had been trading e-mail with some of the executives in the Moto Pro Group at Motorola, the people responsible for all of the MPx Series converged devices. I had developed a 2 page list of about 20 or more questions regarding the MPx with hopes of getting an interview with them about the device. I figured if the guys at MSMobiles had gotten a few moments with them in person at a trade show, I could surely get a few moments over the phone."

Now what I like about this review is how it highlights not only the problems this phone had when it was released but also the denial of Motorola that there ever was a real problem or a recall for that matter. This is an interesting read in my opinion.

Motorola MPx220 (latest ROM) Review

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.mozongo.com/movabletype/archives/2005/02/motorola_mpx220_7.html

"If you have followed the history of the MPx220 you have heard of its previous issues. When the device was released, it was extremely anticipated and people clamored to get one. After the initial wow factor died down there were complaints of poor sound quality (both in and out), poor volume control, and poor camera quality. Motorola has attempted to fix these problems with a Firmware update my review unit has the latest update (1.3) so I will attempt to answer whether or not it is still plagued by these issues."

User submitted image

Here is another review of the phone I love to hate. This one is a post 1.30 ROM upgrade look at it. It's always interesting for me to read what others think of this phone especially because I own one. Personally I like my MPx220 but am just very disappointed that Motorola didn't when they made it.

Busted Up That MPx220 Already?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 07:15 PM

http://www.cnn.cn/shop/

Are you unfortunate enough to have broken your MPx220? Maybe you lost the battery cover, or just broke a couple of those little tabs off it. Is your casing cracked? If you're looking for parts, you need to check out Cellular Nationwide Network. They have all the parts you need to get your phone back up and running, and they're all reasonably priced.

Please discuss this in the existing thread.

Vodafone Germany to Release the Motorola MPx220

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=2233

"According to the German online magazine heise.de, Vodafone Germany is ready to release the Motorola MPx220 Windows Mobile Smartphone during February this year. Without a contract it should be available for around 470 Euro. Wow, good news for Windows Mobile lovers; after the successful T-Mobile SDA-line launch and o2's announcement to release the MPx220 (wonder when it will happens), now Vodafone Germany joins the Smartphone hype with the MPx220! :-) Germany becomes Smartphone paradise. ;-)"

I have to give it to Vodafone. They were smart and waited until North America finished beta testing the MPx220 for Motorola before unleashing it on their unsuspecting customers. It is good when this Smartphone thing spreads though. I have to ask, how do you say "Can you hear me now?" in German? 8)

Enhance the Performance of Your MPx220 by Downloading the New ROM Update.

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 11:30 PM

http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/hellomoto/experience/mpx220/flash/softupdate.shtml

User submitted image

Well it may be a day late and a dollar short but Motorola seems to have come through with a flash update for your MPx220 to the latest and greatest 1.3 ROM version! "This update is only for Cingular devices purchased in North America." so proceed with caution. In addition if you already have 1.3 (as I do) there is no need to perform this update. Good Luck!! :)

eWEEK Labs Review: Motorola MPx220

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1755186,00.asp?kc=EWRSS03129TX1K0000605

"Motorola's MPx220, which runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 Second Edition, has the basic functionality of a Pocket PC in a typical cell phone form factor. We appreciated this unit's small size but found it a bit trying to enter and view data. Still, tight integration with Microsoft's popular software stack, particularly with Exchange 2003, makes this product a worthwhile contender for providing data access to mobile workers. Companies looking for the same integration in a more usable, albeit much larger, form factor should look to Microsoft's Pocket PC Phone Edition-based devices."

User submitted image

This is actually a comparison review of the MPx220, the Treo 650 and the Blackberry 7100t. The one thing that caught my attention was that the 7100t has the least functional Bluetooth of the three devices. I haven't been too kind to Motorola about the MPx220 but I still enjoy using it. Now that I have my THIRD phone with the new ROM I find it performs pretty well. What I am waiting for is a Smartphone in a Treo form factor. :)
