Is it a sign of a phones success or the end of its life span when Amazon starts to offer it for free after rebates? I'm going with the success option - especially in this case. ;) Cingular's QWERTY based Windows Mobile device, the Samsung i607 (aka BlackJack) is now available for the incredibly low price of $0.00 after rebates. In typical Amazon fashion, youll need to sign a contract in order to qualify for this rebate. Thats not a big deal for those of you that are looking to get your first device or are currently out of contract with your carrier. So what are you waiting for? Head on over to Amazon and grab yourself one of the hottest Smartphones on the market today. :D [Affiliate]

Perdiemco Offers Free Location & Tracking Software for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.perdiemco.com/

"Perdiemco Location & Tracking (PLT) software allows you to track your trip and lets others locate and follow you online. You set the passcodes so only those that you want can see your trip. You can also take pictures or leave messages with your pda or phone and put them online for others to see. You can set zones for tracking (with alerts) too. These are "boxes" you create. You can track inside a zone or be alerted when someone enters or leaves a zone. PLT offers privacy and 'a need to know', So you can turn off anyone's ability to locate you at anytime. PLT allows you to access and use your GPS on-the-fly from any location connected to the Internet. Get reliable, convenient and secure access to GPS information from home or on the road."

GPS seems to be a hot topic as of late. We're seeing a lot of GPS enabled applications springing up. Perdiemco's Location and Tracking software does just what you would expect - it logs your location information. To run Perdiemco's solution, you need to have a Windows Mobile Smartphone or Pocket PC, Bluetooth GPS, .Net Compact Framework 2, and Active Sync 4.1. Cingular Offers Microsoft Direct Push Technology for the Cingular 2125

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 09:00 AM

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060613/nytu118.html?.v=56

"Cingular Wireless will offer its business customers access to corporate e-mail via Direct Push Technology, a feature of Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) upgrade, beginning on June 19, 2006. The solution initially will be available on two of the hottest wireless devices in the market today: the Cingular 8100 series Pocket PC and Cingular 2125 Smartphone. Direct Push Technology delivers an enhanced mobile experience to organizations that use Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 by pushing updates to e-mail, calendar items, contacts and tasks as they arrive directly from the Exchange Server to the devices."

User submitted image

Here it comes finally! For those of you foaming at the mouth for Direct Push, the thing Moto left out of the Q, it may finally be here along with MSFP. It will also be available for the 8125 as well. The story talks mainly of corporate customers and new rate plans for this. I'm not sure how that translates as far as just getting the new ROM (or update if that's what it is). I suspect we will all be able to access it as the article references this link which won't be active until the June 19th.

Mail2Web Offers Free Exchange Email with Direct Push

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 05:00 AM

http://live.mail2web.com

Mail2Web has been offering free web and mobile access to your email for a long time. They've come along way from the early days. They now offer a free Exchange account with access via OWA and OMA. Recently they added support for Direct Push while still keeping the price at the incredible low level of nothing!

I was pretty skeptical when we received this news, so I setup an account myself and within a 10 minutes I'm doing free Direct Push email on my Smartphone. I had a little problems getting things setup, but it was totally worth the effort for the price. ;) If you're interested, all you need to do is head on over to Mail2Web Live and setup an account. Once you have your account setup, log into the Control Panel and under the Free Services tab, click on the last left menu item called "Mail2Web Live" and then "ActiveSync Settings". Make note of all this information, especially the domain. Now, grab your MSFP enabled Smartphone, launch the ActiveSync Client and press Menu/Configure Server and follow the prompts.

It may not be as feature rich as a true hosted Exchange account like the ones you would get from 4smartphone.net but I can handle that considering that Mail2Web is free.

Update: Just wanted to clarify a couple things. First, Mail2Web also offers a full range of hosted Exchange services for a monthly fee, just like 4Smartphone. However, they're the only place offering free Direct Push email. And second, You need a Smartphone with AKU2 (with MSFP) installed on it for Direct Push to work. The only Smartphones with AKU2 at this moment are Qtek and i-mate. :)

Amazon Offers T-Mobile SDA Smartphone for Sale

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 06:30 AM

User submitted image

Amazon already has the brand new T-Mobile SDA Smartphone available. Currently there are no rebates listed, but in the past the rebates have always taken a little longer to appear. If you're interested in buying the phone without a contract, it can be yours for just $399. That's a considerable price difference from the similarly specifications i-Mate SP5(m), which can be found on Expansys for $504.99. I've been watching Amazon for Cingular's 2125, but it has not appear as of yet. I will let you know when it shows up. [Affiliate]

Update: Bushrod has found a $50 rebate coupon reducing the price with a 1 year contract to $199.99 :D Thanks Bushrod!

Google Offers Personal Mobile Homepage

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 08:30 AM

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=internetNews&storyID=2006-01-12T202912Z_01_FOR272363_RTRUKOC_0_US-TELECOMS-GOOGLE-WIRELESS.xml

"Web search leader Google Inc. on Thursday said it was now offering U.S. mobile phone users a personalized version of the Google home page tailored to work on most recently introduced mobile phones. The Google Personalized Home page for mobile phones will allow consumers to conduct Web searches and check Gmail e-mail, news headlines, local weather reports or a list of stock prices -- all from one central page on their phones. Google is racing with Internet rivals such as Yahoo, Microsoft, America Online and InfoSpace to extend the information services they already offer on computers to the browsers of mobile phones."

I must admit, that I have done more than a couple Google searchs from my phone, but I don't think I need a personalized home page. I try to conserve bandwidth when using my phone. So, I'm more interested in keeping the page clean and small.

HTC America Website Offers Updated ROM for Cingular 2125

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.htcamerica.net/

"Experts predict that by 2009 we'll be carrying around a billion cell phones. And there will be millions of Pocket PCs, too. But what good are all these gadgets if they don't make your life simpler, more productive, and a lot more fun?"

User submitted image

If you go to this support page you find a ROM upgrade for the 2125. According to my source at HTC the upgrade is for testers who have earlier, pre-production ROM versions on their phones. The upgrade takes the phone to version 1.8.42.14 which is what I already have on my phone. If you want to check your phone go to Settings and then System Information. You will see the OPERATOR version there.

Microsoft Partner Program Now Offers Mobile Solutions Competency

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 11:00 AM

https://partner.microsoft.com/global/program/competencies/mobilityprogram/40019083

"If your company designs, deploys, or customizes mobility solutions using Microsoft technologies, attaining the new Mobility Solutions Competency can aid you in promoting your skills to customers. Find out more about the benefits, requirements, training, and certification exams."

In order to achieve the Mobility Solutions Competency, you'll need to be a member of the Microsoft Partner Program, have taken the required exams (proving that you know a thing or two about mobility), and then apply to attain the Mobility Solutions Competency title. This allows Microsoft Partners to show that they are aware of the mobile world, and can assist in providing solutions for it. It would be nice if we could eventually see a Microsoft Certification in the mobile arena too! For now, this will do. So, who's going to apply first?

Sprint Offers Handset Tool to Create Personal Ringtones

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:45 AM

http://www.textually.org/ringtonia/archives/2005/09/010036.htm

"Sprint has announced the launch of ToneMaker DJ, a new mobile Music Tone application enabling customers to easily create original Music Tones, right on their phones. In addition, the application's "DJ Lounge" community offers powerful features that allow the best ringers to gain recognition, be heard and even purchased by the application's subscribers."

OK, I guess that some people would be interested in creating a Ringtone on their device, but it just seems silly to me. I would much rather sit in front of a PC to do this sort of thing. The combination of a larger screen and a mouse, makes this so much easier to do. 8)

Simple Calc Offers Powerful Features

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:13 AM

http://www.smartphone.net/smartphonethoughts/software_detail.asp?id=1656

"Designed for MS Smartphone it can make calculations in Decimal, Hexadecimal, and Binary number system, work with Degrees and Radians. Wide range of operators and functions is available while short number of commonly used operators are accessible with phone's keypad. The distinctive feature of SCalc is keeping history of your calculations. If you made a mistake or need to change an argument, you do not have to calculate the huge formula again. Just press back button and change the operand, operator, or function you like. Want to recollect your calculations made some hours ago? Just get back to the application on your phone and look at it. All the actions you made are there."

User submitted image

Simple Calculator looks to be pretty powerful for something so simple. I haven't tried it, but from the screen capture, it looks to support Sin, Tan, Cos, and more. Could this be the Scientific calculator that some of you have been longing for? The best part is, it's free! :)

T-Mobile USA Offers EDGE Across 90% of GRPS Network

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 08:45 AM

http://rcrnews.com/news.cms?newsId=23982

"T-Mobile USA Inc. said it has launched EDGE services across 90 percent of its GPRS-enabled network and that the higher-speed wireless data service now is commercially available to customers with EDGE-enabled devices. The carrier was expected to launch EDGE earlier this year, but delayed the service due to a lack of compelling devices. T-Mobile USA currently offers a pair of EDGE-enabled handsets from Motorola Inc. and Nokia Corp. A company spokesman said customers can continue to access the EDGE services for the same price as their current GRPS rate plans, but that the carrier would begin looking at possible EDGE-specific pricing plans sometime in the future."

User submitted image

The EDGE network would enable T-Mobile customers to surf the Internet at speeds averaging between 100 to 130 Kbps. Even though this speed is a lot better than the current 20 to 45 Kbps, it still is no match for the 300 to 500 Kbps offered by Verizon and Sprint on their EV-DO based networks. Cingular is already offering EDGE nationwide and has started offering 3G speeds using UMTS technology. T-Mobile has no plans to offer 3G technology, they I believe are betting on the Wi-Fi hot spots. The HTC Tornado is the perfect device for the T-Mobile network, it has EDGE and Wi-Fi. ;-)

T-Mobile Offers Free WiFi to Hurricane Effected Regions

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1854453,00.asp?kc=EWRSS03129TX1K0000605

"In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, T-Mobile USA Inc. said it will offer its Wi-Fi services without charge to the general public of the tri-state area, including Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. T-Mobile said that the services will be free until the end of the week, and possibly beyond that if the situation warrants it. Mobile service locations include Borders, FedEx/Kinko's, Starbucks, Hyatt Hotels, Red Roof Inn motels, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and US Airways. According to the company there are 66 locations in the affected area, some of which may have intermittent hours due to storm damage inflicted during the hurricane and the subsequent flooding."

While I feel for those dealing with effects of hurricane Katrina, I don't think that free WiFi service is what these people really need right now. With 80% of New Orleans being under water, I think free WiFi access would be the last thing they are looking for. Hey T-Mobile, you want to help? How about free unlimited local calling in the effected region! I think that would be far more useful at this time.
