Divx Mobile Player: How The Heck Did We Miss This Release?!

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:32 PM

http://mobile.divx.com

During my lunch break today I was sitting around browsing the Internet and watching some streaming Divx videos on one of my favorite sites, Stage6. If you have never been to Stage6 before the best way to describe it would be YouTube for Divx users. I do not know how it happened, or why it happened, but somehow I got thrown to a sub-domain of Divx.com for mobile devices. Being the nosey person I was, I started browsing around and low and behold, I found out that Divx had quietly released a version of their Divx Player, dubbed Divx Mobile Player, onto the internet! The best part of this delicious find is that this program is 100% free!

If you are a Divx/Xvid user and would like to enjoy your media on the go without paying the outrageous price of most media players out there, then go check out Divx Mobile Player. You do have to sign up for a Stage6 account to download the application but I feel it is a small price to pay for such a juicy little gem! The program is still in release candidate phase, but so far I have been able to enjoy a couple of old Family Guy episodes I had laying around on my memory card as if I was watching them on my computer! :)

Unable to See the Smartphone's Storage Card in the Media Player on Windows Vista?

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:30 AM

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931621/en-us

"You try to synchronize content from Microsoft Windows Media Player 11 to a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5-based device with AKU 2.3 or a later AKU. When you do this, the phone connects. However, only the internal storage on the phone is available in Windows Media Player as a synchronization target. This issue occurs because the canonical name for Windows Mobile 5-based devices with AKU 2.3 and later AKUs is truncated in Microsoft Windows Media Device Manager. This hotfix eliminates a bug that causes this truncation to occur."

Windows Vista is claimed to be one of the most heavily tested software developed by Microsoft. It is sad to see that problems like this one went unnoticed. If you are having trouble with the Media Player in Windows Vista being unable to recognise the storage card on your smartphone, then you must apply this hot-fix.

ASUSTek to Become a Big Player in the Smartphone Market? FCC Clears Another ASUS Device Called 02 Graphite

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/ASUS-to-become-a-big-player-in-the-smartphone-market-article-a_1637.html

"A few days ago, we reported about the Vodafone VDA IV smartphone, manufactured by ASUSTeK, Taiwan. What is more interesting is that the FCC just approved an improved version of the smartphone, adding a duo of digital cameras (it is 3G-capable phone) and Wi-Fi wireless protocol. Targeted to O2, the new O2 Graphite will be part of the carriers line of smartphones, which was mainly composed by HTC devices, a Taiwanese brand, leader in Windows Mobile based phones. Keeping identical design to the Vodafone phone, the Graphite will be more advanced than the VDA IV; it runs on Intel PXA270, 416 MHz processor with Intel Hermon modem. XDA Graphite has the same 128MB ROM and 64MB RAM and is tri-band GSM plus single-band UMTS, but the Bluetooth is now v2.0 instead of 1.2."

User submitted image

Nanko Roussev over at phoneArena.com has a very good point. Is ASUSTek the new HTC? Over the weekend we had mentioned that the FCC has cleared an ASUS device for Vodafone called the VDA IV. Unlike HTC that launches one device at a time and then changes the styling to re-brand the device for each carrier/vendor, ASUS has launched two very identical looking handsets but they have big differences on the inside. The 02 Graphite has Wi-Fi, camera and a more powerful processor. Also, this unit uses the standard pocket Internet Explorer instead of Opera. The FCC documents can be viewed over here.

Windows Media Player for the Smartphone Examined

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 09:45 AM

http://www.twoinchview.com/?p=56

"Using the Qtek 8500 as my primary music player involved more than just the hardware itself: the software played a bit role in shaping my experience. Windows Mobile 5 comes with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, a smaller and more limited version of its desktop counterpart. Windows Media Player 10 on the desktop is what I used to transfer over my music onto the Qtek 8500. I set it to transcode my audio to 128 kbps WMA files - since I wasnt able to use my own headphones, I guessed that the bundled headphones wouldnt be high-quality enough for me to need anything higher than 128 kbps in quality (and boy was I right!)."

Jason examines the musical power of his new Qtek 8500 over on The Two Inch View. If you're looking to get a feel for how well HTC's StarTrek handles music, you'll want to give this a read. I've always been less then thrilled with Windows Media Player Mobile. It does the job, but that's about it. What are your thoughts? What applications do you use for music playback?

Qtek 8500 as a Music Player: The Battery Life

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 PM

http://www.twoinchview.com/?p=62

"Testing battery life is notoriously difficult to do with any degree of accuracy: there are software programs that help test battery life, but using software is a synthetic test that doesnt always accurately reflect real-world scenarios. The only way to get true, real-life battery tests is to duplicate the exact scenario in which you want to evaluate the battery performance. In this case, I wanted to test how long the Qtek 8500s battery would last when playing music. Heres how I did it."

User submitted image

How far will one man go to test the battery life of his new Qtek 8500? Well, I can't tell you. You're just going to have to head over to The Two Inch View to find out! I can tell you though, I was quite impressed with the results! ;)

Qtek 8500 as a Music Player: The Hardware

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 PM

http://www.twoinchview.com/?p=55#more-55

"Ive been using the Qtek 8500 (a.k.a. HTC Str Trk) as a digital audio player the past few weeks, and have a few thoughts on the experience. Overall, its been a mixed bag: in some ways, the experience has been excellent, but in other ways I found it frustrating compared to the Zen Vision:M Id normally be using for listening to music. Certainly, a converged music player is bound to have compromises, and depending on the scenarios in which youre using the Qtek 8500 as a music player, some of these may or may not affect you."

User submitted image

Over at The Two Inch View, Jason has written a very nice article about using the new Qtek 8500 as a music player. If you were interested in picking up this sleek handset, or you have been curious about converging your music player and phone into one device, I would seriously consider reading this article. :)

Full Screen Video in Windows Media Player Tweak

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=3683

"Heres a great tip for us Smartphone users. This will let video play in full screen in Windows Media Player"

I love tweaks. Here is one for Media Player fans. As always, be aware of the risks and do a backup if you can before you try these kinds of things. I of course try most tweaks without backups, but that's just me.

ROK Player Released For Windows Mobile

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 11:39 AM

http://www.rok.tv

"ROK Player is now available for your Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone! The key is the content, you'll find all sorts of great shows (Little Britain episodes, Austin Powers movies, the list goes on...), available to purchase and with ROK's recent ROK TV launch you can watch all sorts of shows like Channel 5's Fifth Gear (yes its a poor man's Top Gear but its still a cool car show!)."

User submitted image

This seemed cool so I wanted to give it a test run but I couldn't find a link anywhere to download a Smartphone version of the application. I also couldn't download a Pocket PC version of the app to attempt to install on my Cingular 2125 since there was a problem with the site. If anyone manages to get this up a running I would love to hear how it performs. :)

Large Majority see Cell Phone as Primary Camera and MP3 Player

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 08:15 AM

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5048966.stm

"Camera phones could replace digital cameras as the main gadgets people use to take pictures, a study suggests. It found that 44% of people already use their handset as their main camera. The days of the MP3 player also look to be numbered, as 67% of those questioned said they expected their phone to replace their portable music player. The survey, commissioned by handset maker Nokia, comes as the number of mobile phones in use around the world approaches 2.5 billion."

The survey goes on to say that 89% of Americans prefer to have two separate devices when it comes to cameras and phones. I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before we slip into the "norm". As much as we would like to keep two devices, the majority of users out there don't seem to feel the same way. I wonder what Canon and Nikon have to say about this? Or, for MP3 players; What's Creative's thoughts? We all know Apple is trying to jump this divide, but they haven't had much luck so far. And what's next? We're already seeing TV added to the list. I'm not really sure what the next big thing will be.

Synchronizing Your Devices with Windows Media Player 11

Posted by Jason Dunn in "ARTICLE" @ 01:01 PM

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,48738

"Fortunately for us Windows Mobile users, Windows Media Player 11 isn't just eye-candy. Beneath the player's visually appealing interface is an improved sync experience with portable media devices that rivals what most consider to be the benchmark in today's digital age - that is, the iTunes + iPod partnership. After the break, we'll take a look at some of the new features in Windows Media Player 11, and most importantly, go through the simple steps to getting your favourite media on to your mobile device."

Darius Wey has written an article on Pocket PC Thoughts that covers the synchronization experience. It's an excellent overview of what the new player has to offer, so give it a read.

The latest version of Pocket Player from Conduits supports Windows Mobile Smartphone. If that doesn't get you excited, maybe the built-in equalizer might. No? Ok, what about full support for MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and WAV. Pocket Player appears to be loaded with cool features. I'm going to download it now and give it a try. Anyone else looking to up the power of Media Player?

i-mate SP3i ROM Update Version 2.3.33.21 Now Available, Includes Windows Media Player 10

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.clubimate.com

I-mate has finally released the much awaited ROM update containing Windows Media Player 10 for its i-mate SP3i Smartphone (European version, 900Mhz). :-) Wonder what took i-mate so long to release this update? As an i-mate customer, who paid over $400 for the SP3i Smartphone and decided to buy an i-mate device (instead of the one sold by the carrier), the key deciding factor was the ROM updates. Even though i-mate has been doing a good job at releasing ROM updates for fixing problems and improving performance, the update with the WMP 10 was missing. Finally i-mate has decided to make their customers happy, after almost a year.

User submitted image

I-mate customers can login to the Club i-mate web site and download the ROM update from the SP3i support page. Not sure if a similar update is available for the SP3 model. I cannot access the SP3 support page. Maybe one of our readers can confirm it. Don't forget to backup your Smartphone data before applying the ROM update. I was able to able to update my SP3i without a hitch. :)

Update: Our reader mpattman has confirmed that a similar update is available for the i-mate SP3 (European version, 900Mhz) model also.

 USSD service support is upgraded.

Ringtones
mp3 ringtones can now be used

Updated MMS
Input phone numbers in "To" field using T9 "abc" mode, MMS cannot be sent while last number underlined.
After capturing picture, the device might go to album or other photo review option instead of returning to MMS client this has been corrected.

"Is there a RealOne Player for MS-Smartphone? Read on... I would like to share this do-it-yourself guide on how to install then setup RealPlayer on MS-Smartphone. Please read the instructions carefully. Works/tested on SAP1 and C500."

Personally I wouldn't let this virus run on my PC let alone my pocket devices however I know there are RealPlayer fans out there so here is your chance to get this on your Smartphone. I can't vouch for this but if you try it and it works let us know.
