LapLink Looks to Solve Your Sync Problems with PDASync

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3949

"No question, ActiveSync and/or Windows Mobile Device Center is and was a love/hate relationship for most Windows Mobile users and if you still have problems with either the one or the other, Laplink's latest PDAsync version might be an interesting alternative. Just released by the grandfather of all sync-software, Laplink PDAsync 4 provides you with simple, high-speed, one-click synchronization between your mobile devices and popular applications on your computer for all your corporate and individual needs. This fast, flexible and easy-to-use software supports all major devices, including Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6 PDAs and smartphones and applications, including Outlook, Lotus Notes, ACT! and Novell GroupWise."

Just when you thought you would never ever see a good sync product for your Windows Mobile device, in comes LapLink. Microsoft has been slow to release updates and the ones they have released are not very good at fixing the problems. I'm pleased to see that some developers are noticing this and working at a solution for us. I am going to give this product a try and if it works any better than WMDC or AS, then I'll be buying a copy. It's too bad that things have gotten this bad that we have to look at outside solutions to sysnc between Microsoft products and on top of that, pay for the ability to sync. But I'm so sick of the pains with WMDC that I'm willing to do it. Anyone else going to give it a try? You can download a trial version from the LapLink web site.

Cingular Experiencing Massive Network Problems?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://theinq.net/?article=24491

"It seems that Cingular has a massive US-wide problem with their network, or in their parlance, a feature. This new feature, one that they don't charge extra for, yet, makes it impossible for you to get inbound calls, they just drop to voice mail. ...Well, Cingular, when confronted admitted it has a problem, and if you spend an hour on the phone with them, it can correct this one, manually, one at a time. Sigh. It won't tell you about it unless you call first, it is nationwide and from what I gather, irregular. If you are on Cingular, I would heartily recommend you check if your inbound works a couple of times a day until it comes clean on this one, if it ever does."

Well, this is the first I've heard of anyone complaining about network problems. Maybe it's just an isolated incident? Is anyone else having network problems with Cingular?

Multiple Button Press Problems With The New C500

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 02:30 PM

http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=113611&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

"You heard it here first, and it's not good news if you're a gamer i'm afraid... Forum member 'muff' has highlighted a problem where the C500 keypad cannot accept any other input at the same time as pressing the joystick / scroller. We have already raised this problem with Orange / HTC, and word has come back that this is a HARDWARE problem, and as such, no fix will be available in the current hardware. So, fingers crossed that HTC learn from their mistakes and fix it in future phones, but it definitely limits the C500s gaming potential"

Paul From MoDaCo posted this over the weekend. I'm a little shocked that problems like this still exist, especially from HTC. They have been making mobile devices for long enough to know better. It's not a big issue for me, because I'm not a huge gamer, but I know this is a deal breaker for a lot of you.

Database Problems

Posted by Jason Dunn in "UPDATE" @ 02:04 PM

Some of you may have noticed we had some database issues today - for some reason the databases are being corrupted, and we're trying to figure out what's causing it. It looks like we've lost some data as well - Mike Temporale can't log in to post messages, because his account is gone. 8O So if you're having the same problem, stand by while we try to fix it.

Photo Contacts 2.0 Released - Fixes MPx200 and i600 Caller ID Problems

Posted by Robert Levy in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:04 PM

http://www.smartphone.net/smartphonethoughts/software_detail.asp?id=128

Good news for MPx200 and i600 owners fighting with caller ID problems! Photo Contacts 2.0 was *just* released and, as we posted previously, gets around the issue of the built in caller ID not displaying the name of a caller if you have a large number of contacts.

Here's the full list of improvements in 2.0:
  • 2 new Photo Caller ID modes (SIMPLE mode displays a smaller photo, THEMED mode displays a medium sized photo)
  • Awesome new photo adjust engine lets you crop and adjust contact photographs on the Smartphone
  • Photo image browser lets you easily assign photos to contacts on the phone (great for camera phones). SmartName is still the preferred option for assigning many contact photos at once.
  • SMS/MMS/Email support facilitates easy message sending through Photo Contacts
  • Contact photos can now be sent via MMS, Email and Infrared (via PhotoBeam)
  • Caller ID Name Override feature fixes the Caller ID bug in US based Smartphones (i600, MPX-200)
  • Option to enable continuous ring-tones
  • Ability to sort contacts by Company Name
  • Photo ZOOM feature (just press * to display a large photograph of the selected contact)
  • Incoming Call forwarding info is shown in Themed Photo Caller ID (support varies by network)
  • Enhanced call dialog remembers the last selected number for each contact for Talk-Talk functionality
  • Automatic auto-run at startup loads Photo Contacts in the background
  • Enhanced support for memory cards
  • Performance improvements across the board (everything is faster!)
Photo Contacts was a great app in 1.0 and now it looks like a must-have for American users. To make the deal even better, 2.0 is a free upgrade for anyone who purchased the previous version! You can pick this up NOW for $19.99 in our affiliate store.

Update: The free trial download has not yet been updated to version 2.0. You can use it to try out the 1.0 features, but it does not include the things listed above. We have been told that a free trial for 2.0 should be available by tomorrow.

Here are some screenshots of Photo Contacts 2.0:

SPV E200 Problems

Posted by Robert Levy in "THOUGHT" @ 02:16 PM

http://idunno.org/displayBlog.aspx/2003112501

There has been a lot of talk lately in our forums and over at MoDaCo about problems with the new SPV E200. Despite these problems and rumors to the contrary, Orange is continuing to sell this device.

As for the actual problems, idunno.org seems to have the best summary of them. Interestingly, idunno.org is still happy with the phone and concludes with this: "In spite of all that, I still like it. I actually believe these are software faults (for example the joystick in the hardware is apparently 8 way) and we'll see patches. Of course how long it will take to see those patches is another matter."
