SBSH has just released MyList for Windows Mobile Smartphone (Standard) devices. I have to admit I felt that SBSH had forgotten about the Smartphone community when they released MyList for the Pocket PC. But all is good in the universe now that they've got a Smartphone version for us. :) If you haven't played with MyList, I suggest you download a copy and give it a whirl. The gang at SBSH has always produced some excellent quality software, and I'm certain that MyList is no exception.

New Version of Gentimer Released

Posted by Pete Paxton in "NEWS" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.rivia.net/Gentimer.aspx

"It's been one year since we've released the first version of Gentimer, and now we want to give you the new version with new looks and an even better alarm engine, which is more flexible and easy to use. Gentimer is the application that every Gentlemen or Gentlewoman should have on their smartphone. It is designed to be stylish, functional, yet simple to use 'all-in-one alarm, timer, stopwatch, world clock application which will make your life easier."

User submitted image

If you need a clock, timer, stopwatch, customizable alarm clock, customizable timers, and world times that display four cities at once, then Gentimer is what you are looking for. I like their "sleepyhead" alarm mode which makes you enter in a random code so you actually have to look at it to shut it off. I also like the "gentle" alarm mode which plays a softer sound to wake you up gently. Isn't "time" to consider an app as flexible as this? If so you can head over to our affiliate store to download a trial or purchase your own copy.

BlackJack ROM Update Released from Samsung

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://erms.samsungusa.com/customer/sea/jsp/faqs/faqs_view.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=557&PROD_SUB_ID=558&PROD_ID=751&AT_ID=83176

"Samsung has recently released a software update for the BlackJack, which is recommended to be installed. This update should enhance roaming capabilities, especially Internationally. In addition, there are cosmetic user interface changes (several icons have been changed) contained within the update. The update will take about 10 minutes to complete if the system is already set up."

Don't get too excited - It's not Windows Mobile 6. But it does address some roaming issues along with some new icons for apps. The download is 51MB and you'll need to turn off pop-up blockers or else you won't see the EULA window that takes you to the download. I have downloaded my copy and will be flashing my device this afternoon. Please post back here and let us know how it goes for you.

Caution: Doing this update will remove all your personal data and settings from the device. It will reset the device to factory settings. If you have SIM unlocked the device, it will remain SIM unlocked.

AdapTex for 12 Keypad Smartphone Released

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.adaptexlive.com/?node_id=3.1.3.2&id=30

"Your 12-key Smartphone is designed to allow you to compose and edit documents on the go, creating a valuable mobile office experience. AdapTex transforms this data entry from a time consuming chore into a highly efficient activity, making it simple to write SMS, Instant Messages, documents and more with relevant, contextual suggestions from AdapTex."

User submitted image

If you are about to throw your T9 equipped phone out the window this might be a solution. The only demo I could see was a little animated sequence comparing the T9 and AdapTex methods. It is worth taking a look at if you are seeking an alternative to T9.

Vaja Goodness Released for the Blackjack

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.VajaCases.com/affiliate&ID=100

User submitted image

Vaja has always done an amazing job when it comes to making cases for mobile devices and it looks like they've out-done themselves again. Vaja has recently announced the availability of Balance for the Blackjack. The case takes the device from 0.5 inches thick to 0.76 inches. It adds a little, but I don't expect it's anything to be concerned about. Overall these pictures look amazing. The case starts at $65 and could take up to 25 days to custom make. But you can be sure that this case will be the best thing you've ever done for your Blackjack. 8)

Windows Live for Smartphone Released

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 11:00 AM

http://mobile.search.live.com/about/default.aspx

In the "oops we missed this one" department, Windows Live for Standard (Smartphone for us normal folk) has been released. It looks like it will also work on Professional (Pocket PC, in case you are confused) devices as well. With faster searches and I'm sure, access to the wonders of the world, how can you pass this up? They will even text message the link to your device in case you are afraid to enter it yourself. I won't even try it, but I wonder if Mobile MSN Live Messenger still wreaks havoc with your exchange contacts. In the past it would add everyone on your messenger list to your contacts on your device, which of course would end up on your exchange server, if you were using one. Naturally they gave you no way to opt out of this disaster. If anyone tries it, let us know.

ActiveSync 4.5 Released

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9e641c34-6f7f-404d-a04b-dc09f8141141&displaylang=en&tm

"Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 is the latest sync software release for Windows Mobile-powered devices. ActiveSync provides a great synchronization experience with Windows-powered PCs and Microsoft Outlook right out of the box."

User submitted image

Following the announcement of Windows Mobile 6, Microsoft has released ActiveSync 4.5. At the end of this post I have included the list of fixes, improvements and also the features that are being dis-continued by Microsoft in the 4.5 release. Improved file transfer speeds and better Exchange server integration does sound tempting, but I will wait till I find out that the improvements are noticeable. Thanks to push based updates I do not have to sync my Smartphone with the desktop all the time; I can afford to wait and I am sure our readers can do the same too. ;-)
Faster file transfer speed and photo sync via Outlook are only available for Windows Mobile 5.0 powered devices.
Remote PC Sync (via WiFi or LAN) has been removed due to Enterprise customer feedback around security issues.
Customers using Microsoft Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 with devices running the Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 will benefit from the following feature enhancements included in ActiveSync 4.5: Direct Push Technology, local device wipe, and certificate powered authentication to Microsoft Exchange.
Microsoft Outlook 2000 is not supported by ActiveSync 4.5. It is highly recommended that users upgrade to Microsoft Outlook 2003 messaging and collaboration client.
Conversion of database files for use on a mobile device is not supported by ActiveSync 4.5. On previous versions, this feature was limited to devices running Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC 2003 and earlier.
Conversion of font files for use on a mobile device is not supported by ActiveSync 4.5. On previous versions, this feature was limited to devices running Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC 2003 and earlier.

Check out the ReadMe.doc provided on the ActiveSync download page for more details on the known issues, fixes and improvements. Developers will have to upgrade to the newer version because the Windows Mobile 6 SDK requires ActiveSync 4.5.

Microsoft Released Daylight Savings Patch for Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 09:45 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/daylightsaving/default.mspx

"Congress has changed the dates for Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the United States starting in 2007. Canada has adopted similar DST dates. These changes could cause clocks and Microsoft Outlook calendar appointments on Windows Mobile-powered devices to display incorrect times for March 11 April 1, 2007 and October 28 November 4, 2007 and again in subsequent years. You can find more information about the exact dates and potential impact in the Changes in DST section. You can prevent these problems by installing three Microsoft files on your device and/or PC"

Microsoft has just released an update for the changes coming to Daylight Savings Time. If you live in the US, Canada or Mexico, you'll need to head on over to this site and follow all the steps required to update your device, computer, and even Exchange. If you're running the latest and greatest then there is a chance that this won't affect you. Take the time and do this now before it's too late. You'll also want to test out the change when you have a chance. If you know of friends, family, or co-workers that use Windows Mobile and might not read this site (shocking, I know!), please pass this information along as soon as possible to avoid any problems.

My thoughts on all of this - I'm very disappointed in the way Microsoft has handled this change. Weve all known about this for a long time now. Theres no reason for taking so long to release a patch. There is under 1 month to go before Daylight Savings kicks in and theyve just now released the patch. That doesnt leave much time for enterprise to test and deploy this patch to their work force. Especially if the work force is mobile most of the time.

"Jeyo Mobile Extender adds mobile text messaging capabilities to your Outlook application through a Windows Mobile Smartphone or Pocket PC phone. With this add-on program, you can exchange messages with other mobile phone users anywhere around the world directly from your Outlook. For me this is a must have application and now it works with Vista and Office 2007. This is the best way I have found to manage and save important SMS messages on your devices. There is a trial version and it is only 19.95USD. Well worth the price in my opinion.

Ball Rush Aqua Released for Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:00 AM

http://software.smartphonethoughts.com/product.asp?id=10222

"Modern technologies and the undecayed classics: Ball Rush Aqua is enthralling arcanoid that realized eternal ideas on the up-to-date level. Now you are able to travel along the underwater world. This game strikes by its diversity from a form and features of the bat to the variety of tasks: you don't need to destroy all blocks, just open a way to the upper part of a screen to pass a level, and then to pass next ones until you'll rich the top, where it is able to have a fun and smash everything in sight. It contains over a hundred of original locations on two levels of difficulties and a great number of bonuses which make the game-play even more captivating and attractive!"

User submitted image

Ball Rush Aqua is a pretty impressive looking break out style game and now you can play it on your Smartphone. There's a trial version available, or you can purchase a copy for $11.11 from our affiliate store. Keep in mind that you only have until the end of today to participate in our charity drive and a chance to win an HTC Excalibur. So dont delay.

ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 Released

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:00 PM

https://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/activesync45.mspx

"Changes in ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 help improve issues related to setup, partnerships, and connectivity with the PC and Microsoft Exchange. In addition, it includes a troubleshooter utility that scans your computer and device to identify problems and offers information and corrective actions to solve them. ActiveSync 4.5 Beta 2 supports synchronization with a desktop or tablet PC via USB cable, Bluetooth, or infrared connection."

If you're not having problems with ActiveSync, then I don't know if it's worth the upgrade to this new beta or not. As far as I'm concerned with ActiveSync, if it's not broken, don't upgrade it. ;)

MMS Exploit Released for Windows Mobile No Patch Available

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/security_response/weblog/2006/12/mms_exploit_released_for_windo.html

"Collin Mulliner gave an updated version of his presentation at 23C3 in Berlin titled Advanced Attacks Against PocketPC Phones (we originally blogged about it in August). As I previously mentioned, one of the vulnerabilities he discussed had, to my knowledge, still not been patched. Well Collin confirmed this in his presentation and also released a working exploit for the vulnerability to liven things up a little."

User submitted image

Well here we go. Now these writings keep referring to Pocket PC Phones. We all know most don't know the difference, except us of course. I suspect Symantec, who seem to be the most desperate to find I threat that will scare us, doesn't. Forgive my sarcasm but I don't think there is a Windows Mobile device big enough to hold a bloated Symantec Anti-(you fill in the blank) application. Perhaps one day Symantec will get their wish. I do find it interesting that with all the mobile devices out there now, there really are no threats. Any thoughts as to why?

Ringo Ringtone Manager for Windows Mobile Smartphones Released

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:30 AM

http://news.yahoo.com/s/prweb/20061218/bs_prweb/prweb492651_1

"December 18, 2006 -- Electric Pockets Ringo Mobile application is now available for users of Windows Mobile Smartphone devices, such as the Cingular 2125, Motorola Q, T-Mobile Dash and the SPV C600 from Orange. Ringo has long been the best selling ringtone manager for Palms Treo smartphones, such as the Palm OS-based Treo 700p and the Windows Mobile-based Treo 700w, with features such as playing MP3 tunes as ringtones and assigning ringtones to individual callers or groups of callers. As well as using their own MP3 tracks, Ringo users can choose from 50 free MP3 ringtones, which they can download directly to their phone. The free ringtone collection includes professionally produced tones, and seasonal specials."

Ringo supports using MP3 and WMA files for your ringtones along with assigning unique ringtones to friends or groups. For the most part, these features are part of the core OS but I imagine that Ringo wraps it all up in a easy to use interface. At least that's what I can gather from the Pocket PC screen shots on their website. If you've used this application in the past on the Palm or Pocket PC device, you'll be happy to know it's now available for the Smartphone. You can purchase a copy from the developers website.

Spb Mobile DVD Software Released

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/about/pressreleases/2006/dec04.html?en

"Spb Software House, the leading Pocket PC software developer, releases Spb Mobile DVD a desktop application that provides a simple way to convert DVDs and video files to mobile format with the fastest possible speed and a true real-time preview. According to a recent Spb Pocket PC Survey, approximately 50% of Pocket PC owners watch movies on their Pocket PCs. They watch videos while traveling or during just about any idle time. One can share home videos, show cartoons to children, and more. ...Spb Mobile DVD is optimized for the fastest conversion speeds on one core, hyperthreading and dual core processors. On a new PC it is possible to convert a 2 hour long DVD film in about 20 minutes! Factors which affect conversion include the CPU, DVD player, output video settings, video quality and zooming mode."

User submitted image

Spb makes some amazing Pocket PC applications, but they don't seem to have much when it comes to the Smartphone. However, their latest offering should work for any Windows Mobile device. Mobile DVD will help ease the pain and frustration associated with ripping movies for playback on your device. I'm interested to hear what everyone thinks about this app, and if it works well for converting movies for the Smartphone.
