HTC S310 to Replace the SPV C100 on Orange UK

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9852

"Orange recently launched the SPV C100 in Romania. It's an Orange branded version of the HTC Oxygen. Here it is with all the Orange gubbins. OK, now forget all that, because things have gone a little weird. The commercial arm of HTC call this the HTC S310 and it's not appeared in the February edition of the Orange catalogue."

Here is one for the confusion department. I don't see what the big fuss is all about. HTC makes so many devices with so many names and numbers it has become virtually impossible to know which is which. For those of you who like keeping track of this insanity, here is more fodder for you. :)

AT&T To Replace Cingular Brand Monday

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "THOUGHT" @ 10:04 PM

http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9007899&intsrc=news_ts_head

"AT&T Wireless was once an independent company that had been spun off from AT&T Corp. Cingular Wireless LLC bought the wireless operator and eliminated the AT&T Wireless brand. Then SBC, one of the owners of Cingular, bought AT&T, adopting the AT&T brand for its landline services. More recently, AT&T bought BellSouth Corp., the other owner of Cingular, spurring the switch back to the AT&T brand for the wireless service. Now that AT&T is the parent company of several telecommunications brands, it is consolidating the branding under the AT&T name as a way of cutting costs. AT&T estimates that 20% of the operating expenses it expects to save through the merger with BellSouth will come from consolidating advertising."

I wasn't too attached to the Cingular name so I will not be heartbroken to see it fade away. The good news is, since all of the AT&T Wireless customers were finally migrated to the Cingular billing system, there should be no interruptions in service. As much as I love Cingular's service, I don't think I could go through that much torture again. :)

Nokia Creates Wibree to Replace Bluetooth

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 02:21 PM

http://www.infoworld.com/article/06/10/03/HNnokiawireless_1.html

"Nokia has developed a new, short-range wireless technology that it says could improve on some of the shortcomings of Bluetooth...The technology could compete with Bluetooth in the workplace as a way to link keyboards and other peripherals to computers. But it could also have more interesting applications for consumers, in devices such as wrist watches, toys, and sports equipment."

Just my luck! Right after I purchase the Jabra BT620s Bluetooth Stereo Headset, someone has to go and "improve" upon the technology. In all seriousness, this technology does look promising. One of my biggest annoyances with Bluetooth evolves around how much power it consumes. If Wibree can actually consume as little power as Nokia claims, I wouldn't be surprised if all phones were equipped with this in the next five to ten years.

HTC "Faraday" set to Replace SMT5600 in Late October

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 10:15 AM

http://www.bargainpda.com/default.asp?newsID=2632

"Always take a grain of salt--or better yet, a shaker's worth--with reported release dates for converged devices. They are almost always wrong. Converged devices have a bad tendancy to slip, sometimes months past their original planned release. But it's rumored that internal Cingular documentation, leaked onto the net, proves that the HTC Wizard will be released on the Cingular network on October 24th, replacing the aging HTC Blue Angel, a.k.a. the SX66. The alleged document also lists another HTC device, code-named "Faraday," which is listed as replacing the SMT5600 Windows Smartphone on October 21st."

I wonder what this "Faraday" device will be like? The codename for the new Qtek devices was Tornado, so it's not referring to those devices. If the codename is any indication, we could be looking at a device that's packed full of power and possible the best battery life of any HTC product to date. Of course, this is just a guess. (Michael Faraday was an advocate for the law of conservation of energy.) Anyone else care to speculate on what this device will be like?

Best Buy Planning To Recall Or Replace MPx220s?

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THOUGHT" @ 11:00 AM

Smartphone Thoughts reader cortez pointed out an interesting post made by dss2 on the HowardForums. The post talks about Best Buy's plan to recall the Motorola MPx220 from its stores and upgrading the firmware. It also talks about some kind of replacement plan for folks who already own the phones.

I decided to verify the story at my local store and have this to report. The local Best Buy still has the MPx220s in stock, with the same problematic firmware. The store representative does not know about any recall plans but did know that there would be would be a firmware upgrade or upgraded phones available in a couple of weeks. I was asked to check back in two weeks time for more details. If you find anything interesting on this new episode in the MPx220 launch drama, please share it with us. Personally I am just glad to hear that they are working on a solution. :-)

Update: Forgot to give credit to HowardForum's member dss2 for the news find in my original post. Also, our reader sclui56 has confirmed this story with some solid evidence and is providing us with hands-on information about the latest MPx220 firmware. Take a peek inside this thread for more information.

Mobile Phones To Replace Your Wallet

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=technologyNews&storyID=5698349&src=rss/technologyNews§ion=news

"Look inside almost anyone's purse or pocket, and it probably contains at least a mobile phone and a wallet bulging with bills, coins, receipts, credit cards, IDs, train or bus passes and any number of membership cards. In Japan, that may soon be a thing of the past as the mobile industry aims to combine the two with a small embedded chip that can also store money and personal information. NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan's largest mobile operator, on Saturday became the first operator to launch a wallet phone, equipped with Sony Corp.'s FeliCa smart chip, which can be quickly read by passing it over a scanner."

I'm not sure I like this idea. What happens if your battery runs out? Or you loose your phone? This is a neat idea, but I don't think it will really function very well in the real world.

Mobile Phones To Replace Your Next Computer

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5092826/site/newsweek/

"One hundred nineteen hours, 41 minutes and 16 seconds. That's the amount of time Adam Rappoport, a high-school senior in Philadelphia, has spent talking into his silver Verizon LG phone since he got it as a gift last Chanukah. That's not even the full extent of his habit. He also spends countless additional hours using his phone's Internet connection to check sports scores, download new ringtones (at a buck apiece) and send short messages to his friends' phones, even in the middle of class. 'I know the touch-tone pad on the phone better than I know a keyboard,' he says. 'I'm a phone guy.'"

This is a really interesting article on the current and future of your mobile phone. It seems to deal a lot with PalmOne, but that doesn't really change the point of the article. I agree that eventually mobile devices will replace the computer as we know it today. However, we are a long, long way from this. Over the last week I was forced to use my mobile devices only, as my laptop was returned for a little warranty work. So I have some fresh experience in this area. Although I was able to get by, there was a lot of stuff that I was unable to get done until my laptop returned. Some things just require a larger screen, a keyboard, and a mouse. At least for now. :)

Replace Your SPV Manual

Posted by Robert Levy in "ARTICLE" @ 05:40 PM

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=289089&native_or_pdf=pdf

Orange decided to write their own manual for the SPV instead of using the standard one provided by HTC. They made it colorful, removed a lot of important information, and even added in descriptions of non-existant features for extra flavor. Alas, SPV owners are not stuck with this monstrosity forever! Whenever devices are registered with the FCC, their manual gets put up in a big database on the FCC's website. So all you have to do is head over to that site, download the original and uncut manual, and print it out. This article links you straight to the PDF download. Be patient with it though - the FCC's site is pretty slow and it's a 650+ KB download.
