Microsoft Releases BingTones for Phones, Puns In the Process

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Software" @ 09:37 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...99-9f1fba8e9245

"Bing isn't just a search engine, it's a decision engine. Download these Bing-branded ringtones to your mobile device, then make www.bing.com your new default search engine today."

Microsoft's BingTones certainly live up to their name. There's more "bing" in them than you could ever imagine. Perhaps to the point where using them would cause offense to those around you on your daily commute. Still, check 'em out and let us know if they've found a new home on your Windows Mobile device.

HTC e-Club Undergoes Changes, ROM Updates Available to (Almost) Everyone

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC News" @ 05:53 AM

http://www.htc.com/www/support.aspx

There's a fresh breeze going through HTC HQ at the moment. The company has opened up ROM updates to almost everyone. I say "almost", because you still need your device's serial number to download the updates, but that's a heck of a lot better than the notoriously flaky process of registering your device in the e-Club.

With ROM updates available in the Support section, the e-Club now serves as a hub for mobile content. While only twenty ringtones are up for grabs at the moment, they're surprisingly decent. Four of them are the tunes featured in the Touch Diamond promo videos. The rest are a mix of electronic, folk, rock, hip-hop, and new age beats. You do need to be an e-Club member to download them, but it's free for anyone (even non-HTC customers) to register.

Free Creative Commons Ringtones from Jagamaga

Posted by Paul Martin in "Smartphone Content" @ 03:00 AM

http://jagamaga.mobi/

"Jagamaga.mobi provides alternative ringtones for mobile download. The service is truly free and does not even require registration. Jagamaga is optimized for convenient direct download to mobile phones. Jagamaga seeks to collaborate with creative sound designer and musicians to distribute their inventions to a wider public. The idea is to provide promotion for lesser known artist."

Beyond your basic bells, buzzes, and tones, most carriers offer a wide variety of ringtones taken from pop-culture. If you're looking for something just a little different, you might try Jagamaga. Sound engineer and content manager Andreas Mehrens selects high-quality ringtones from an eclectic group of artists like Acclivity, Danger Mouse and Jemini, Enrico Caruso, Freq Man, Haroldo Torrecilha and Zap Mama. He's even got a handful of audiobooks available for download. As these are all licensed under Creative Commons, the only thing you may have to pay for is data time to download them.

Orange Branded Samsung i600 Crashes When Changing Ringtones?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 06:45 AM

http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2007/05/17/orange_samsung_i600_problems

"A while ago we unboxed the Samsung SGH-i600 and published this video of the device. Since then the i600 has been released on the Orange network and a number of our regular visitors have been asking if there is any difference between the straight Samsung and the Orange branded version of the i600. Both devices have exactly the same hardware but there are some software differences as, once again, Orange removed MSN messenger from their version and branded the homescreen and icons. However there seems to be a more worrying problem with the Orange version. As you'll see in the video below, there are some stablility issues. One of the first things I tried on the i600 is to change the ringtone but simply doing this is enough to crash the device and all one can do is remove the battery as it wont even respond to the power button."

Matt has come across an interesting bug with the Orange branded Samsung i600 device. Fresh out of the box, the device will crash if you try and change the ringtone. 8O I haven't had any problems with the BlackJack, so this is either something specific to his device, or something that Orange has done by accident. Anyone here have the Orange device and can confirm this problem with their device?

Sharing Video Ringtones With Vringo

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.vringo.com/

"Vringo is one of those services that left me scratching my head a little, wondering if there was really a market for this, but then again I can't grasp the huge market for cheesy-sounding ringtones either. Vringo is a video ringtone service that allows you to see and share your video ringtones with others."

User submitted image

I don't understand why people even want custom musical ringtones, let alone something like this. I've lost count of how many times I've rolled my eyes at the goofy music coming out of people's phones when they ring. This seems even more obnoxious to me.

Custom Ringtones to the Extreme with Pro Tone (Beta) From V2R

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.v2r.ag/products/smartphone/v2rprotone.html

"With pro Tone installed you will hear immediately who is calling you from which phone. Pro tone even allows you to set different volumes and profile rules for one contacts different phones. Pro Tone comes with an outstanding and easy to use user interfaces."

User submitted image

Pro Tone takes caller specific tones to a whole new level. By default, in Windows Mobile Smartphones you can assign a custom ringtone to any given contact. Pro Tone allows you to assign a custom ringtone to any given phone number. That means a differen sound for you contacts cell phone, home, or office number. You can also tell Pro Tone to override the current profile when a call from a given number comes in. So there's no reason to miss you that call when your significant other is looking for you. ;)

Microsoft Releases Free Holiday Ringtones

Posted by Mike Temporale in "CONTENT" @ 09:45 AM

"Celebrate the season with six new holiday ringtones for your Windows Mobile powered phone, including Hot Chocolate, Sleigh Bells, SnowFlakes, Charity, Below Freezing, and Black Ice ringtones. Happy holidays from Windows Mobile!"

User submitted image

Microsoft is once again giving out some free ringtones. This time, there are six of them and they're holiday themed. I've switched to the Black Ice tone. I think it's the best of the bunch. :)

Create Custom Spoken Ringtones with AT&T Labs

Posted by Mike Temporale in "CONTENT" @ 08:15 AM

Here's some Friday fun for your Smartphone. I noticed this post over on CoolSmartphone a while ago and filed it in my to be posted folder, but it seems to have been forgotten about.

AT&T Labs has a web page that will convert whatever you type into spoken word. This allows you to create some extra cool custom ringtones for your device. I created this personalized ringtone that I'll be mandating all Smartphone Thoughts News Editors use for me. ;)

To add a custom ringtone on your Windows Mobile Smartphone, just edit the contact and scroll down until you see custom ringtone. Point this field to your new sounds and away you go.

Of course, you can always record your own voice saying something goofy and use that for a ringtone, but where's the Geek in that? ;)

Creating Your Own Custom Ringtones - Step-By-Step

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 11:15 AM

http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11706

Ringtones are big. Everyone wants their own cool ringtone from their favourite song, band, or what-have-you. If you don't know how to create them, you can end up paying a lot of money just for a 30 second clip. Thankfully, Smartphone Thoughts member, aximilation, has written up a simple step-by-step guide on how to create your own custom ringtones. All you need is Audacity (freeware) and an MP3 of the song you want to transform into a ringtone.

Here's a handy tip to go along with aximilation's guide; Once you have that funky new ringtone, you can assign it to an individual caller. All you have to do is edit the contact you want to assign the ringtone, and set the field "Custom ring tone" to your latest creation. Enjoy!

Please continue the discussion in the existing thread. Thanks.

Register to get your free ringtones and sign up for the Windows Mobile Downloads newsletter to receive all the information about the newest applications and offers from Windows Mobile."

I just registered and it was quick, easy, and painless. Just answer a couple questions and then click agree to the whatever it was the lawyers had to say, and then you're off downloading 4 free ringtones. They're all just over 20 seconds in length, and the sound is pretty nice. I think I'm going to use the "Blues" ringtone for my email notification sound. :D

Free Ringtones Come Loaded with Spyware

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3563531

"A Los Angeles District Court ordered three Web marketing companies to cease and desist an operation using the lure of free ringtones and browser updates to download spyware and adware to users' computers. At the request of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the court also ordered a halt to the deceptive downloads of a marketing affiliate that helped spread malicious software by offering free background music for blogs."

This should come as no surprise to people here, but I thought it was a good chance to remind everyone about being careful about where you download content from. Keep your virus and spyware definitions up-to-date. It's nice to see the FCC take a stand and shutdown some of these sites. :D

Create Ringtones with CreateRingtone 3.0

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:15 AM

User submitted image

CreateRingtone looks like an easy to use ringtone and wallpaper creator. However, it requires you to send your creations out over the air-waves in order to update your phone. It's so easy for us Smartphone users to just copy and paste these things onto our phone, that I can't see why I would want to do it any other way. I wish applications like this had a way to save a local copy so those of us that know better, can do it our way. There is a 15 day trial version, or you can purchase a copy of CreateRingtone for $19.95 from the developers website.

Update: I just received an email from Scott over at CreateRingtone. He wanted to clarify that CreateRingtone supports transferring content over Bluetooth, Infrared, Wired Connection, or WAP. I'm not a big fan of using WAP to transfer content, so I'm happy to hear that there are other options. Thanks Scott. :)

Sprint Offers Handset Tool to Create Personal Ringtones

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:45 AM

http://www.textually.org/ringtonia/archives/2005/09/010036.htm

"Sprint has announced the launch of ToneMaker DJ, a new mobile Music Tone application enabling customers to easily create original Music Tones, right on their phones. In addition, the application's "DJ Lounge" community offers powerful features that allow the best ringers to gain recognition, be heard and even purchased by the application's subscribers."

OK, I guess that some people would be interested in creating a Ringtone on their device, but it just seems silly to me. I would much rather sit in front of a PC to do this sort of thing. The combination of a larger screen and a mouse, makes this so much easier to do. 8)

Alright, how many of you are going to put the "You're Fired" catch phrase as your ringtone for when your boss calls?

Apparently Even Ringtones are Patented

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000437056601/

"Ringtones are patented? Seriously? We havent been able to dig up the patent in question, but apparently both Siemens and Sony Ericsson have quietly settled lawsuits filed against them by an inventor who claims to have patented the process by which cellphones play music instead of just a regular ring."

I thought all those mono and poly ringtones are played just like the "standard" rings. Or are they talking about actual music files?

Church to Sell Ringtones to Help Raise Funds

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1336351.html?menu=news.quirkies

"A German church has taken to selling Christian ring tones to fund the restoration of its organ. St Petri church in Hamburg has set up its own website at www.petriklingel.de to sell the ringtones. For the equivalent of about 1.40p, worshippers can download one of five hymn tunes. Church musician Thomas Dahl says he is confident the church will succeed in the competiitive ringtone market. "We offer melodies that have been popular for centuries," he said. Worshippers at St Petri's need to raise nearly 150,000 for the restoration of their church organ."

I hope they don't make the DRM on these ringtones too restrictive.
