SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Downloads Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 08:30 AM

http://pluralsight.com/blogs/jimw/archive/2007/01/15/45704.aspx

"Ok It looks like it's finally here. The false-start in December where the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition folks pulled the downloads has past. Also, me jumping the gun last week and posting the download URLs before the "official" release is over. I checked with the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition folks on Friday to confirm that it was OK to post the links today (15-January-2007) and they said today is the official release so I should feel free to post the links. So after all that, SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition and all of the related tools are "live and in color". Enjoy it. The added desktop support now gives us a lightweight, in-process (no server process) database for both desktop and Windows Mobile. Just as important, the database format is compatible so moving a database between a desktop computer and a Windows Mobile device is a simple file copy."

Prepare for SQL Server Everywhere Edition

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 08:30 AM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnvs05/html/sqleverywhere.asp

"Microsoft recently announced that it will be evolving the SQL Mobile product into a product named SQL Server Everywhere Edition. SQL Mobile is currently a database that you can use on "mobile" devices, which include Tablet PCs, Pocket PCs, and Smartphones. SQL Mobile differs from SQL Server in that with SQL Mobile, there is no "server" running as a background process. The engine for SQL Mobile consists of a handful of DLLs that you reference from your application. When you want to connect to a database, you just put the path to the database file in your connection string. In fact, working with SQL Mobile feels a lot like working with an Access/Jet database. The limitation for SQL Mobile, today, is that it will only run on "mobile" devices. In other words, you can't deploy an application that uses SQL Mobile to desktops or laptops."

User submitted image

SQL Everywhere is the new and improved version of SQL Mobile. SQL Everywhere enables a truly portable database file that can be moved between the desktop, the laptop, the Tablet PC and the Windows Mobile device. It is as easy to code and deploy as Microsoft Access. Scott Swigart has written an introductory article about SQL Everywhere on MSDN that can help you in getting started.

Microsoft Readies Exchange Server 2007 Beta 2

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 04:35 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2006/jun06/06-12Exchange.mspx

"Today, the nature of work is dependent on a workforces ability to connect anytime and anywhere in order to make faster and better business decisions. As a greater number of remote and mobile workers enter the industry, Microsoft recognized the need to create software solutions that simplify working together and provide closer connections with customers and partners at all times. New mobile features and additional functionality in Exchange Server 2007 are designed to address this pain point, and include ability to search on a device, self-service remote device wipe, support for HTML mail, message flagging, document access and improved meeting request handling. ... Let me give you a couple of examples, starting with support for search. Users will be able to search and access all of the e-mail that resides on their Exchange Server 2007 using their handheld device."

User submitted image

The above quote is from Terry Myerson, General Manager for Exchange Server, in response to the question about the new mobile features in the upcoming Exchange Server 2007 release. Looks like the new release will include some much needed and powerful features like message flagging, meeting request handling and support for searching server email from device. And then there are some cool features that I am not sure how they will be implemented like document access and support for HTML mail. I always thought that HTML support was something that the email clients need to provide, wonder how the server is going enable it? :? Check out the Exchange Server 2007 Preview site for more information. Also check out this On-Demand Webcast for the presentation given by Terry at TechEd 2006 in Boston.

SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition CTP is Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=85e0c3ce-3fa1-453a-8ce9-af6ca20946c3&displaylang=en

"Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition (SQL Server Everywhere) is designed for developers who need light weight, in process relational database solution for their applications that can be developed and deployed on desktop as well as on mobile devices. The SQL Server Everywhere CTP contains the runtime bits that can be used to develop and deploy applications on desktop only. The RTW of SQL Server Everywhere will contain the device support for developing and deploying applications on mobile devices. SQL Server Everywhere CTP is a powerful tool that makes it easy to develop desktop applications by supporting familiar Structured Query Language (SQL) syntax and providing a development model and API consistent with SQL Server."

User submitted image

Microsoft is announcing the availability of the Community Technical Preview of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition just before TechEd 2006, the largest annual customer conference for IT Pros and developers. The Everywhere Edition is the new version of a feature rich compact database that was previously called SQL Server CE. The new edition provides a reliable and better performing database engine, it offers improved synchronization, and integrates with SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005. To learn the details of what's new in this edition and how to use this new mobile database, download the SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition Books Online from here. Developers who are eager to get cracking on the mobile database will have to wait a bit longer to test it on their mobile devices, because the current CTP version supports the database on only the Windows Desktop, the mobile version is not available in this CTP release. :?

MobiPocket eNews Creator Banned from Thoughts Media Server

Posted by Jason Dunn in "THOUGHT" @ 08:44 PM

It's with a great sense of frustration that tonight I implemented a robots.txt ban of the Mobipocket eNews Creator bot. If that doesn't work I'll be implementing an IP address block. It's been a rough week for our server - we've had a lot of traffic and the server has been slow and unstable because of it. I dug into the logs to see where the traffic was coming from, and I was shocked to see huge amounts of traffic coming from a robot identifying itself as "eNews Creator". How huge? On Wednesday the 17th of this month, the eNews Creator bot hit Pocket PC Thoughts.com 37,499 times alone (the numbers for Smartphone Thoughts weren't as bit, but still large). Half a gig of bandwidth in one day. The entire month of April? Our server was hit 938,472 times, for a total of 18.55 GB of bandwidth. To put those numbers into perspective, the Google bot only hit us 431,010 times in the same month and only used 3.29 GB of bandwidth.I don't take this action lightly, because there are evidently people interested in using the Mobipocket client to read news from Smartphone Thoughts. The problem is that Mobipocket has evidently created their software without regard for the servers that they are scraping. They created it to hit servers without respecting the rights of the publisher. No RSS/scraper client needs to hit a server 37 thousand times in one day, period. Upon discovering this information, I attempted to contact Mobipocket to resolve the matter. I scoured their Web site looking for some way to contact them directly - nothing. No email addresses, no contact form - they direct everything into the forums. I managed to find one email address on their privacy page, but upon emailing it I received an autoresponder stating that they did not monitor the alias and only responded to posts in the forums. I tried webmater@ and postmaster@ - two email aliases that should always work. Neither did - both bounced back because the aliases do not exist. I sent two private messages to Mobipocket employees in the forums on Thursday, asking them to respond to this issue, and 48 hours later I haven't received a response. I tried sending a private message to the forum admin - they've configured the admin account to refuse all private messages. :roll:If you're a Smartphone Thoughts reader that uses the Mobipocket client, I'd encourage you to contact them and point them to this posting. I'd like to find a way to resolve this. In the meantime, use NewsBreak and subscribe to our RSS feed.

Deploying Exchange Server with Direct Push Step-By-Step

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/itsolutions/mobile/deploy/msfpdepguide.mspx

You have Exchange Server, you have a Windows Mobile 5 device, but you're not sure how to set up Direct Push? Fear not young mobile guru! Everything you need to know to setup and secure Direct Push can be found in a new Step-by-Step document published on Microsoft's TechNet site. The guide, entitled: "Step-by-Step Guide to Deploying Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 Mobile Messaging with Windows Mobile 5.0-based Devices", walks you through the entire process. All you need is a little time and some basic understanding of these technologies.

I've spent a great deal of time reading over this document, and it's really good. I'm interested to hear from anyone that has already implemented Direct Push, and find out what kind of problems they ran into while doing it. And of course, was it worth it? :)

Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync Web Administration Tool Released

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e6851d23-d145-4dbf-a2cc-e0b4c6301453&DisplayLang=en

"The Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync Web Administration tool enables administrators to manage the process of remotely erasing lost, stolen, or otherwise compromised mobile devices."

User submitted image

Microsoft has released a critical component that enables the remote wipe security feature on the new Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. This component was for some reason not bundled with the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 and Microsoft had promised that it would deliver it as a separate download in the Q4 of 2005. Looks like they have kept their promise. :-) Now all we need is a Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone with Microsoft Security and Feature Pack (MSFP), so that we can take advantage of the features advertised in this white paper.

Upcoming Webcast - Windows Mobile and Your Small Business Server

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 01:00 PM

http://blogs.technet.com/windowsmobile4partners/archive/2005/10/10/412257.aspx

"Next Monday (17th October) we will be hosting another LiveMeeting for our Partners. This time the topic will be "Mobilising Small Business Server 2003". The webcast will be broadcast 4pm - 5pm and will also be available for offline viewing afterwards. The webcast will be presented by Scott Millar of Exactive Ltd. Scott has a lot of experience with SBS2003 and Windows Mobile and will be giving an overview of the mobile capabilities of Small Business Server and how it integrates with Windows Mobile."

This sounds like a very interesting webcast. I know that some of you run your own SBS and I have looked into using it myself. Perhaps once Microsoft releases their new Push Email I will finally setup SBS and finally enjoy the always on email experience. :)

Will Moto Q Support the BlackBerry Enterprise Server?

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THOUGHT" @ 04:15 AM

http://online.wsj.com/article/0,,SB112238270431996050,00-search.html?KEYWORDS=motorola&COLLECTION=wsjie/archive

"Motorola Inc. is launching a handset that aims to compete directly with the popular BlackBerry wireless email device. The Schaumburg, Ill., telecommunications-equipment company unveiled its new email device in the increasingly competitive field: a handset called the Q and equipped with a specialized keyboard and the style of the company's popular ultraslim RAZR cellphone. ... Motorola said it would seek other partners for the device. They could include RIM, which already has a licensing deal with Motorola for its BlackBerry software."

User submitted image

The recent Wall Street Journal news article [paid subscription required] on the Moto Q grabbed my attention. The article talks about a possible partnership deal with RIM that will enable Motorola to receive push E-Mail messages from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. 8O I think it would be a nice move if Motorola uses its license to support BES for push email. We all know that Microsoft Exchange has its limitations and BES has been adopted by more enterprises as the choice platform for email push. This way Motorola will not only have a cool device but will be able to offer it as a replacement to the existing RIM users. The question is whether RIM would want to partner with Motorola on a deal where it may get hit directly?

Windows Mobile Client for Live Communications Server

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 12:15 PM

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1787862,00.asp

"Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday announced a forthcoming beta of its Microsoft Office Live Communications Server client for Microsoft Windows Mobile devices. This mobile client beta is expected to be released in the second half of this year and will support IM on Windows Mobile 5.0 devices including devices that use the Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition and Smartphone mobile operating systems. In addition, Microsoft and IBM announced plans Tuesday to extend their respective enterprise instant messaging clients to Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry device. Long-term plans call for Microsoft to add full LCS client capabilities to the mobile client, including video and Web conferencing and team collaboration, though Microsoft officials said those technologies are dependent on improving mobile phone networks and gave no timetable for availability."

It looks like Email and IM are facing off to be the killer application of the Mobile Device. While most text messages (Mobile Instant Messaging) is done by younger cell phone users, Microsoft is hoping that the enterprise audience will be just as interested. :)

Server Attack Foiled

Posted by Jason Dunn in "UPDATE" @ 11:30 AM

If you were wondering what happened to our server this morning, it was under attack. 870 different computers were pounding our server with a known phpBB exploit that we patched back in December. Unfortunately, the solution provided by the phpBB team didn't do anything to prevent the phpBB install in question from being overloaded with the requests. We've blocked the attacking computer in question and modified phpBB to essentially ignore such requests. Thanks to Jorj and Fabrizio for rescuing our server from the abyss. :-)You know, this makes me wonder at what point the issue of personal liability comes into question - if my computer is attacking your computer, even if I don't know it, shouldn't I be liable for that in some way? If my dog attacks someone, I'm held responsible. If a piece of my roof falls off and kills someone, I'm responsible. I wonder if we'll start to see some legal action against users, or against software companies, related to issues like this?

New iAnywhere Early Adopter Program Helps Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Customers

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.wirelessdevnet.com/news/2004/nov/16/news1.html

"iAnywhere Solutions, Inc., a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY - News), today announced at Microsoft's ITforum an early adopter program for enterprises looking to extend the configuration management capabilities of Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 to a broad range of mobile devices used on the frontlines of business, including Windows mobile-based Smartphones"

While this is geared to the enterprise I hope it spurs wider use of smartphones and hence more development by the manufacturers of them.

Server Load Through the Roof

Posted by Jason Dunn in "UPDATE" @ 09:31 AM

Our sites are being slammed by heavy traffic right now, and we're trying to figure out where it's all coming from. Our apologies for the sluggish server response, or if you can't get to the site at all. Even though we have a fairly robust server, it's not enough to handle the load we're getting hit with. For those of you that know anything about Linux servers, this morning we had a load of 229, which is the highest I've ever seen on this box. So, anyone know where we're getting the traffic from? Did you come here from a high-profile link?

palmOne Licenses Microsoft Exchange Server Synchronization

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THE COMPETITION" @ 10:14 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=3479

"palmOne, Inc. has licensed Microsoft's Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol to enable the delivery of wireless and direct synchronization between Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and future Treo smartphones. The company is planning to use the technology to extend the company's device support for Microsoft Exchange Server by adding capability for wireless server-based synchronization."

Did I just see a pig fly? 8O Honestly, this isn't really surprising. Microsoft based devices are starting to come equipped to handle sync'ing with either RIM's BB Connect or Microsoft's Exchange. palmOne had to pick at least one of these technologies to remain competitive. At this point any company running RIM or Exchange is not about to drop that investment for 1 new device. It just makes good business sense to add license the major technologies and implement them into your device. Thus allowing the customer to leverage their existing investments.

Retraction on Smartphone 2003 Server ActiveSync

Posted by Jason Dunn in "THOUGHT" @ 12:00 PM

Since I was criticizing the lack of this feature, it's only fair that I retract my earlier statement: it seems that on my E200, running the Smartphone 2003 OS, the server sync timer does kick off when you first boot up the phone. I seems strange not to have noticed it on the 2003 OS after being so fixated on it in 2002, but I guess my expectations were that it didn't work, so I didn't notice that it did. :worried:So here's how it works: if it's been longer than your preferred time span since the last sync, it will immediately do a sync. If the phone is turned on, it does the server sync, then it's turned off, when you turn it on five minutes later it will not do a sync. Nice! I have to really applaud the Smartphone team at Microsoft for implementing this feature in exactly the same way that I would have done it.

"Microsoft Brings Vision for Mainstream Speech Technology to Life With Launch of Microsoft Speech Server 2004"

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/mar04/03-24SpeechServer04LaunchPR.asp

"Microsoft Corp. today took another step forward in its strategy to make the business value of speech technology more broadly available to mainstream enterprise companies as Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates launched Microsoft Speech Server 2004 at the co-located AVIOS~SpeechTEK Spring 2004, Microsoft Mobile Developer Conference (DevCon) 2004 and Fawcette Technical Publications' VSLive! San Francisco 2004 events. Speaking to an audience of more than 4,000 during his keynote address, Gates spoke about the developer opportunities and business value Speech Server will enable, which analysts say will change the industry dynamic.

...Microsoft is breaking new ground in the speech industry by becoming the first company to offer a single platform that combines Web technologies, speech-processing services and telephony capabilities. The Speech Server enables companies to unify their Web and telephony infrastructure and extend existing or new ASP.NET Web applications for speech-enabled access from telephones, mobile phones, Pocket PCs and Smartphones."

I wonder what kind of applications and services we'll see come from this? Put your brainstorming hat on - what sorts of services could you see yourself benefiting from that were based on voice technology?
