Steve Ballmer on Windows Mobile: Nokia and Microsoft are the Only Two Real Players in the Smart Device Market

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 09:30 AM

http://news.com.com/Ballmer+discusses+life+after+Vista+-+page+3/2008-1012_3-6141081-3.html?tag=st.num

"Ballmer: Let's say the PC market is roughly 200 million units these days, and let's say the PC market goes great guns over the next several years and grows 14 percent or 15 percent a year. Those are big numbers. You go great guns, China booms. You get maybe over 400 million in a few years. The cell phone market is already a billion units a year, and the truth of the matter is that what I'll call "smart devices," as a percentage, the total is rising dramatically. When it comes to smart devices, there really aren't that many players. Basically, you have Nokia/Symbian, you've got us. Actually, I'll be so bold as to say that the two of us stand out in that area. Then you have some guys who are more niche players--Palm is more of a niche player, (Research In Motion's) BlackBerry is more of a niche player, those Linux devices from Motorola, particularly in China, (mean it) is more of a niche player."

User submitted image

While I do agree with the comment that Microsoft and Nokia are currently the only two real players in the smart phone market, but I think it is a bit too early to start gloating about the success. One of the so called niche player, BlackBerry, is trying to broaden its market with Pearl. And I don't think it is a good idea to rule out Linux. Most of the current success for Windows Mobile is due to HTC; it is only recently that Motorola and Samsung have released popular products based on Windows Mobile. The competition has only begun.

Sleek and Sexy Smart Phones with Big Brains

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 07:15 AM

http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/mobilephones/0,39050603,39302577,00.htm

"Smart phones--they're a great concept. Combined are the powers of a cell phone and a PDA in one unit, letting you make calls, send e-mail, and work on documents without myriad gadgets; yet, these devices haven't exactly taken off. Why? Form factor may be one of the main reasons. To date, smart phones typically have been clunky and heavy, making them unattractive substitutes for your primary cell phone. However, things are looking up. Take these five smart phones, which are compact and pocketable yet don't sacrifice important features, such as wireless connectivity and PIM functionality. Read our reviews to see if one of these compact and light smart phones is right for you."

User submitted image

I agree with CNET Asia that Smartphones used to be bulky and the form-factor was not consumer friendly, but that has now changed. Check out this article by CNET Asia that is comparing five compact smart phones and included in the list is Dopod S300 aka HTC Star Trek.

EMEA Smart Mobile Device Market Growth Rises to 11.7%

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:32 PM

http://www.canalys.com/pr/2006/r2006102.htm

"Growth in the EMEA smart mobile device market in Q3 rose slightly from the previous quarter, but remains well below the 100%-plus rates seen for most of last year. Nokia's lead, achieved largely through shipments of its consumer-focused Symbian S60 devices, remains comfortable... HTC, in second place, was by far the fastest growing of the leading vendors and remained narrowly ahead of third-placed RIM for the second quarter running."

I'm pleased to see the speedy growth of Windows Mobile Devices. With the current release of the T-Mobile Dash , I would expect to see HTC continue to grow at very surprising rates. This is a very exciting time to be a Smartphone user!

Smart Phone, PDA Shipment Up 57 Percent

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2027671,00.asp?kc=EWNAVEMNL101106EOAD

"A new study found that worldwide shipments of smart phones and PDAs were up 57 percent in the first six months of 2006 compared to the same time period last year. The Gartner study, released Oct. 5, found that global shipments of smart phones grew by more than 75 percent in the first six months of 2006 compared to the same time period in 2005. The total number of smart phone units worldwide reached 34.7 million, and Japan now stands for the largest market for these devices."

Very interesting results. Pointed out later in the article is that Japan and Europe lead the charge. No surprise there, most of the new and cool devices show up there. That seems to be changing though. PDA's (which include Pocket PC's) sales are flattening out. The Smartphones are surging ahead.

HTC & Cingular's Smart Meets Sexy Press Event

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 08:45 AM

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=51603

"Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to stop by a particularly unusual event: HTC and Cingular's "Smart Meets Sexy" press event, featuring the Cingular 3125. Now, details on the Cingular 3125, known otherwise as the HTC Star Trek -- the thinnest clamshell Smartphone on the market so far -- is primarily the purview of our sister site, Smartphone Thoughts , so I'm not going to go into it in much detail. Nevertheless, the fact that HTC America is visible and active is noteworthy."

Janak from our sister site Pocket PC Thoughts has just posted some pictures and details about Cingular's "Smart Meets Sexy" event event featuring the 3125 Smartphone, held last Wednesday in New York. I find it rather interesting that the HTC name is displayed everywhere. It's not like they're the one's selling you the phone. Anyway, check out Janak's thoughts on the 3125 and some of the pictures he snapped at the event and let us know what you think.

Make Money and Provide Valuable Feedback on Windows Mobile with Smart M:Panel from M:Metrics

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 11:05 AM

http://www.modaco.com/content/mobilepanel.php?id=33581

"Smart M:Panel is an influential new research panel created by M:Metrics to measure Windows Mobile Smartphone / Symbian smartphone / Pocket PC feature usage. Being a panelist is easy and safe! Research software, completely transparent to the end user, automatically measures mobile phone activity, eliminating the need to fill out detailed surveys each month. ...When you install the Smart M:Panel software to your device, and after the application has made it's first upload of data, M:Metrics send you a cheque for 15 (UK) or $15 (USA)! But it doesn't stop there... as long as you keep the application installed, you will earn 5 (UK) or $5 (USA) per month, paid by cheque every 6 months."

So, you love Windows Mobile devices and you want to make them better. Here's a simple way that you can help and even make a little money on the side. $15 to start, and $5 a month for each month after. That's some pretty easy money. Follow this link over to MoDaCo and you'll find all the answers and information you need to get started. :)

Smart Mobile Device Market Up 55%

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 03:30 PM

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04/28/smart_mobile_sales_skyrocket/

"Over 16.7m 'smart mobile devices' were shipped worldwide in the first quarter of 2006, up 55 per cent on the same period a year ago. According to research from Canalys, the Asia-Pacific region has now overtaken Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in sales of smart mobile devices. Asia-Pacific represented 46 per cent of all shipments during Q1 2006, compared to 39 per cent for EMEA and 15 per cent for the Americas. Canalys defines smart mobile devices as "handhelds, wireless handhelds and smartphones." EMEA shipments of smart mobile devices rose 25 per cent year-on-year over the quarter. However, sales in Western Europe declined 10 per cent versus the same three-month period in 2005."

This next part is my favorite though.

"Qtek posted the highest growth among the top five smart mobile device manufacturers. Its 211 per cent rise took it above HP and Palm for the first time to make it the leading Windows Mobile vendor in EMEA by the end of the quarter."

The Smartphones are coming, the Smartphones are coming! :D

Creating and Migrating Smart Device Custom Controls by Using Visual Studio 2005

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 01:30 PM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/Create_Migrate_Designer_Controls_VS2k5.asp

"By now, every developer, in some way, has experienced the productivity enhancements that the modern rapid application development environment offers. Developers use these environments to build different applications for different reasons. Some applications are structured only for the internal use of business. Some applications are sold commercially. Yet other applications are developed and freely distributed by hobbyists that enjoy contributing to the software community. No matter what the intent, the basic building blocks of each application's user interface are the elemental pieces referred to as controls. ... When a developer uses Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 to create custom controls for smart device applications the process is tedious and error-prone. Creating a custom control that functions solely at run time almost seems trivial. Unfortunately, getting that custom control to properly integrate with the designer can be frustrating for Visual C# developers, and it is not possible for Visual Basic developers. But that was then; now, Visual Studio 2005 has changed the way that developers build design-time support for custom controls."

Smart Explorer Version 2.1.4 Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:30 AM

http://www.smartphone.net/smartphonethoughts/software_detail.asp?id=624

"Smart Explorer lets you manage the files and folder on your phone. Using an original system, you can do operation such as cut-copy-past on several files/folders at a time. You can also search for a file or folder, send a file by email, via infrared or bluetooth."

User submitted image

Since the Smartphones nowadays come bundled with a simple file explorer, I haven't experimented with third-party file explorers. I have heard lots of positive comments for Smart Explorer, and it is QVGA and Windows Mobile 5.0 compatible. :-) Smart Explorer costs only $8.99 and is available here. [Affiliate]

Smart Explorer 2.1.2 and Task Manager 2.1.1 Updates Now Available

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news1935.html

"If you were to look at my inbox you'd see around 5000 emails asking.... "How do I send files over Bluetooth with my Smartphone?" My answer is always the same. Go to Binarys.com and download SmartExplorer. If you want a file explorer for your Smartphone then this is the daddy. Sure, the new version (2.1.2) doesn't currently support bluetooth on Windows Mobile 5.0 devices like the C600, but 2.5 will be fully compatible when it arrives. Get the new spanky version of SmartExplorer here. You can also get the new version of Task Manager here which improves compatibility with QVGA and Windows Mobile 5.0 plus fixes some bugs."

User submitted image User submitted image

Well there is always room for one more task manager and explorer program I always say. This task manager looks like it will let you shut down system processes and really crash your phone! I'm on board for that! You can get the latest incarnation of the explorer here or the task manager here.

Geekzone Adds Review Links to Smart Device Database

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=5433

"The biggest problem these days is that a couple of manufacturers produce these devices, but each distributor or mobile operator will sell them with their own brand and name. Thus, it is very hard for consumers to find the right information - even if the information is available sometimes the name is not well known. The tool allows users to list all devices in the database, or filter by manufacturer, model, brand or name. What I've been doing behind the scenes, and it is now live, is a collection of links to reviews on each device."

Mauricio has taken a great resource and made it even better by adding links to the various different reviews. You can check out all the different products and reviews here.

Changing Times in the Smart Mobile Device Market

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.canalys.com/pr/2005/r2005094.htm

"Canalys research indicates that the trends observed within the EMEA mobile device market in 2004 have accelerated during the first half of 2005. Shipments of converged smart mobile devices, namely smart phones and wireless handhelds, grew from 3.6 million in H1 2004 to 9.6 million in H1 2005, representing a 170% year-on-year rise. To put this in perspective, the EMEA mobile phone market excluding these converged smart mobile devices rose by only 11% over the same period."

If the new crop of Smartphones that are coming down the pipe is any indication I think the trend is clear now. The era of separate Pocket PC devices and phones is coming to a close. People want one device to do it all. What do you want?

"We are very happy to announce that Smart Device Framework 1.4 is now ready for download. The binary package also contains the compiled help for the Smart Device Framework and the Application Blocks. The SDF installer also provides options for installing the full source code, as well as samples for the framework and quickstarts for the Application Blocks."

The wonderful folks at the OpenNETCF.org are committed to the Windows Mobile developer community. They have announced the release of the latest version of Smart Device Framework, which can be downloaded from here. For those who are new to the Windows Mobile development, the Smart Device Framework enriches and extends the .NET Compact Framework by providing a rich set of classes and controls not available in the .NET Compact Framework. Personally I feel that mobile developers cannot survive without the Smart Device Framework. :-) According to Peter Foot, following are the improvements and fixes in the new release. Resolved installation and deployment bugs from version 1.3
 Improvements to GPS code
OpenNETCF.Win32.TimeZoneCollection modified to work on both "raw" Windows CE and Windows Mobile devices
Fixes to some of the control designers
Additions and fixes for OpenNETCF.Net.AccessPoint and OpenNETCF.Net.Adapter classes
Numerous bug fixes throughout OpenNETCF.Threading and OpenNETCF.Windows.Forms namespaces
