Sync Services for ADO.NET on Windows Mobile Released

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Developer" @ 11:45 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en

"Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0 provides the ability to synchronize data from disparate sources. Rather than simply replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of components to synchronize data between data services and a local store. Applications are increasingly used on mobile clients, such as laptops and devices that do not have a consistent or reliable network connection to a central server. It is crucial for these applications to work against a local copy of data on the client. Equally important is the need to synchronize the local copy of the data with a central server when a network connection is available. The Synchronization Services API, which is modeled after the ADO.NET data access APIs, gives you an intuitive way to synchronize data. It makes building applications for occasionally connected environments a logical extension of building applications where you can count on a consistent network connection. Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0, which released with Visual Studio 2008, enabled synchronization between a server database and a SQL Compact 3.5 client database running on a desktop. With this download, you can also synchronize between a server database and a SQL Compact database on a Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device."

Developers, head over to the Microsoft Download Center and grab Sync Services for ADO.NET on Windows Mobile. The prerequisites are SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 and Visual Studio 2008 SP1, so install those if you already haven't done so. Happy syncing!

Live Mesh Goes into Public Tech Preview

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Software" @ 10:00 AM

http://https://www.mesh.com/Welcome/Welcome.aspx

Microsoft has opened up their Live Mesh service to the general public in the form of a "tech preview" which is a nicer way of saying "mostly still beta". I've been using Live Mesh for a couple of months now, and it's a pretty cool service. You set a folder to be "Live Meshed" and not only will it be kept in sync between multiple computers, the contents of the folder will be kept in the cloud (where you have 5 GB of storage). I think there's a lot of potential here, especially since they've stated they'll be targeting mobile devices. I've been dreaming of having my FlexWallet file be pushed to my device when there's a change in it, because connecting my device with my desktop computer is something I just don't do anymore. I was hoping for years that the FolderShare team would release a Windows Mobile client, but they're still struggling to get the service stable, so no joy there. If you have a desktop and a laptop, and haven't checked out Live Mesh yet, you should.

LapLink Looks to Solve Your Sync Problems with PDASync

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3949

"No question, ActiveSync and/or Windows Mobile Device Center is and was a love/hate relationship for most Windows Mobile users and if you still have problems with either the one or the other, Laplink's latest PDAsync version might be an interesting alternative. Just released by the grandfather of all sync-software, Laplink PDAsync 4 provides you with simple, high-speed, one-click synchronization between your mobile devices and popular applications on your computer for all your corporate and individual needs. This fast, flexible and easy-to-use software supports all major devices, including Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6 PDAs and smartphones and applications, including Outlook, Lotus Notes, ACT! and Novell GroupWise."

User submitted image

Just when you thought you would never ever see a good sync product for your Windows Mobile device, in comes LapLink. Microsoft has been slow to release updates and the ones they have released are not very good at fixing the problems. I'm pleased to see that some developers are noticing this and working at a solution for us. I am going to give this product a try and if it works any better than WMDC or AS, then I'll be buying a copy. It's too bad that things have gotten this bad that we have to look at outside solutions to sysnc between Microsoft products and on top of that, pay for the ability to sync. But I'm so sick of the pains with WMDC that I'm willing to do it. Anyone else going to give it a try? You can download a trial version from the LapLink web site.

Sync Google Calendar to your Smartphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:15 AM

http://thegooley.wordpress.com/tag/gcalendarsync/

"GCalendarSync allows you to import events from one or more of your Google Calendars directly to your Windows Mobile PDA or Smartphone over the air using GPRS, without docking or using Outlook or the desktop computer in any way."

User submitted image

There's been some talk in the past about sync'ing your Google calendar with your Smartphone and the best way to do this. If I recall correctly, the application ended up removing all of your appointments from Exchange - not good. I haven't tested this, but then again, I don't use Google's Calendar either. ;) But for all of you who do, you might want to give this a try. Just be careful and back things up first. Please report back and let us know how it works.

Ed Rants About the Lack of WiFi Sync

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THOUGHT" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=422808

"ActiveSync doesn't encrypt data with the desktop like it does with Exchange Server, so someone could steal your data as it was being transmitted, and you simply cannot be trusted to make a decision on that. You can turn off your firewall in Windows. You can choose not to install antivirus software and antispyware software. You can turn off Automatic Updates. You can disable the antiphishing filter in your browser. You can run around your house nekkid with scissors, but the one thing you absolutely, positively cannot do is sync with your PC in your kitchen from the bedroom because someone might be in your basement lurking stealing your data, or if you are in a small office, you can't sync with your PC in your office from the conference room because one of the five people you work with might be listening in on that transmission, and heaven forbid you are at Starbucks and initiate an encrypted VPN connection to your home PC and sync through that secure connection."

Ed Hansberry lets loose his true feelings and thoughts about Mike Calligaro's latest blog post. I felt it was better to link to Ed's post than Mike's attempt at explaining things. You see, Mike's whole argument for this feature not being fixed is that it's not a high enough priority. Wasn't that the same excuse we heard for the lack of a true close option? Makes you wonder if we'll ever see these missing features? I've all but given up on ever seeing a File Sync conduit for Smartphones in Active Sync like the Pocket PC has. After all, who would ever want to put a file on a phone. Anyway, Ed makes a really good point. Head over and give his rant a read and let us know what you think of the whole situation.

ACiD Sync for Pocket PC and Smartphones

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:49 PM

http://www.razer7.com/product-acidsync.html

"Ever want to synchronize the memory card on your Pocket PC or Smartphone, well now you can! Looking for an easy way to transfer your music, pictures, movies and Podcasts? Finding ActiveSync synchronization of "My Documents" just a little too lacking? Want to shrink down your images before putting them on your device? If the answer is yes─then you need ACiD Sync"

User submitted image

If you ever wanted an easy way to sync files with your Smartphone, than be sure to check out ACiD Sync. Personally, I don't really see the allure of software such as this since dragging items to my phone really isn't that difficult. :?

Forcing Windows Mobile to Sync with a Specific Outlook Profile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/raj/WM5Profile.html

"Are you using multiple Outlook profiles on your computer? Are you annoyed at the fact that you have to choose the profile that your device must synchronize with every time you connect the device to the computer? If you answered "Yes" to these two questions, then read on on how you can force your Windows Mobile (WM) 5.0 device to open the profile you would prefer it always synchronize with."

I don't imagine that this problem is something that many people have to deal with. However, if it does effect you, then Raj Pillai has written a help article on what to do to ensure that Windows Mobile will always sync with your profile of choice.

How to Sync Google Calendar with Outlook and Smartphones Automatically

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 04:30 AM

http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20060818_how_to_sync_google_calendar_with_outlook_and_smartphones_automatically.html

"My big complaint about Google Calendar was lack of support for easily syncing calendar data with my smartphone. I use Outlook for my personal information management because it's still the only thing that puts all my data in one place the way I want it. Google Calendar's iCal export made manual syncing with Outlook possible, but I want to get all my calendar data from my computer to my phone automatically. RemoteCalendars solves this problem, making ongoing data sync simple after a convoluted setup process. Here's how you can sync your Google Calendar with Outlook 2003 or 2007 and automatically sync to your phone in the process."

User submitted image

If you use Google's Web based calendar for keeping track of your appointments then you will find this how-to guide useful. I must point out to our readers that this concept can be applied to the Yahoo calendar as well. Yahoo provides a free tool for syncing its Web based calendar with Outlook. ;-)

Mark/Space Finally Released Missing Sync 2.5 to Sync Windows Mobile 5 with Mac OS X

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3183

"Mark/Space, yesterday announced that it has released an update to its popular synchronization software for Mac OS X, The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. The new 2.5 release runs natively on Intel and PowerPC Macs alike and adds support for Smartphones and Pocket PCs that run Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5 operating system, including models from Dell, HP, HTC, i-mate, Palm, Motorola and Samsung. The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile provides connectivity and synchronization capabilities for Mac users with handheld devices running Windows Mobile 2002, 2003 or 5. Windows Mobile 5 devices, which began shipping at the end of last year, posed a problem for existing synchronization products, because significant changes were made to how these devices establish secure connections and sync with personal computers."

What I know about a Mac wouldn't fill a thimble. I have heard that Syncing Windows Mobile devices with them has been somewhat of a problem. For those of you in the Mac world this may bring relief. I haven't seen many Mac specific posts here. If you do use a Mac I would be interested to read your experiences in this area.

Inside Windows Vista: Windows Mobile Device Center and Sync Center

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 05:00 AM

Microsoft has released the Windows Vista February CTP (Community Technology Preview) release, also known as the Beta 2 - Build 5308. This release is being called by Microsoft as "feature complete," what it means is that all the key capabilities planned for the Windows Vista year end release are now officially available for testing in this release. There are bugs and performance slow-downs which will be fixed before the final release and the user experience will also be improved before Windows Vista hits the store shelves. But there will not be any drastic changes to the current functionality.

User submitted image

Windows Vista recognizes that nowadays everyone carries multiple portable devices: PDAs, media players and Smartphones, and that it is important to provide a central place for managing these devices, setting up the synchronization rules and viewing the conflicts/errors. Windows Vista promises to improve the user experience for mobile devices with the help of Sync Center. So let's take a quick look at the Windows Mobile device support in Windows Vista and see if the Beta 2 comes close to fulfilling that promise.

Windows Mobile Device Center

Figure 1: Windows Vista is a visual delight. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (313KB)

Every square inch of the user interface has been redesigned. Right from the Start button and the Start menu to the Control Panel have been redesigned. The translucent glass effect is quite refreshing. Windows Vista is supposed to enable a simple yet powerful user interface in a stable and secure environment. To learn more about Windows Vista check out the official site.

Windows Vista detects and installs the necessary drivers; plug and play at work.

Without even installing the ActiveSync application or any other Windows Mobile related application, Windows Vista provides a simple user interface for synchronizing the media files and to explore the storage on the mobile device.

Figure 4: The pesky "Windows needs your permission..." dialog. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (103KB)

Windows Vista's emphasis on security means that even users logged in as administrators will be bombarded with prompts similar to the one above every time they try to change a system setting. In this case I had clicked on the "Mobile Device Settings" link.

User submitted image
Figure 5: Doesn't this dialog look similar to the Connection Settings in the ActiveSync application? Click on the image for the high resolution image. (104KB)

Folks, ActiveSync is not going away, a part of it is going to be an integral part of Windows Vista.

User submitted image
Figure 6: The File Management link in the Windows Mobile Device Center is similar to the File menu Explore option in ActiveSync. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (55KB)

Don't you like the way it shows the total memory and the available memory?

Figure 8: The Pictures, Music and Video link brings up the Windows Media Player 11. I have not played with the Windows Media Player 11 or its media file sync capability. Click on the image for the high resolution image. (73KB)

As you can see Windows Vista has made the process of pairing the mobile device with Windows easier and some of the commonly performed tasks have been made available in an easy to use applet, the Windows Mobile Device Center. But where is the email, contacts, calendar, tasks and notes synchronization capability. I tried a lot but could not find any screen that would let me configure it. You may have noticed that I was not asked to specify any names for the partnership. In Windows Vista, I believe, this form of connection is called the Quick Connect, it is very similar to the Guest partnership in the ActiveSync application. The help also did not provide me any guidance for enabling Outlook data sync. Either the Windows Mobile Device Center is missing some features (but Beta 2 is supposed to be feature complete) or I am missing some step.

2-way Outlook Sync for Public and Group Calendars

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.diditbetter.com/Solutions/Add2Outlook%20for%20Calendars/overview.asp

"Add2Outlook for CalendarsTM is an Outlook Com Add-in for Exchange users which auto duplicates and synchronizes Outlook calendar appointments created in a Public (group/global), Private, or a PST calendar (and not marked Private) to another Outlook calendar- Private (mailbox), or PST (within the same folder) and ready to synchronize to a PDA (cradled/wireless) or Smartphone. With Add2Outlook for CalendarsTM, users can have their new Outlook calendar appointments replicate bi-directionally (2-WAYS) and edit appointments 4-ways."

This sounds like a great solution for people looking to sync more than their basic Outlook Calendar. More information, including licensing costs are available on the developers website.

" Chapura, Inc., an innovator of mobile personal information management (PIM) synchronization technology, today released PocketMirror Professional 1.0 for Microsoft Windows Mobile, the first software product to both add to the basic Microsoft Outlook PIM synchronization features of Microsoft ActiveSync and maximize the categorization capabilities in Pocket Outlook, which is built into Windows Mobile-based devices. Still No File Sync Conduit in Windows Mobile 5 and ActiveSync 4

Posted by Jason Dunn in "THOUGHT" @ 04:00 PM

If you've used your Smartphone for more than a week you've undoubtedly installed an application or two that requires a data file of some sort. In my case, it's FlexWallet from Two Peaks (fantastic app!). I need the same data file on my Pocket PC, desktop, and Smartphone. Two Peaks has created a sync conduit, but it's a bit clunky and not integrated into ActiveSync. Much to my frustration, this feature is still missing from the latest updates to Windows Mobile and ActiveSync. For the life of me, I can't figure out why this is still missing after three releases! Why is Microsoft so completely out of touch with reality on this feature? :?

Missing Sync to Offer Windows Mobile Smartphone Support

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:00 PM

http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=84008

"Mark/Space, Inc. today announced The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile, a substantial update to The Missing Sync for Pocket PC, synchronization software that connects Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile Smartphones to computers running Mac OS X. I guess this is good news for the Mac crowd. Then again, it's not available until the end of June, so the news isn't all that good. :? In caes you're interested, there is a full list of features available on the Mark/Space website.

Symbian to Adopt Exchange Sync Software

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.betanews.com/article/Symbian_to_Synch_Up_With_Microsoft/1111504943

"Symbian, maker of mobile phone software, has announced it will license synchronization software from Microsoft, swallowing its pride and shaking hands with its Redmond rival. The company hopes to bring corporate customers that use Microsoft Exchange for e-mail over to Symbian-based smartphones. The synchronization tools will be made available to Symbian licensees, which include Nokia and Fujitsu. Symbian already supports RIM's Blackberry Connect and Open Mobile Alliance Data Synchronization protocols."

This might be good news for the Exchange group at Microsoft, but ultimately it's bad news for the Mobile Embedded Devices group whose job it is to sell Windows Mobile as an OS - one of the core advantages of Windows Mobile over Symbian-based devices is the easy Exchange synchronization. Still, I don't think people perceive Symbian as being a natural fit for the enterprise environment, so they'll have a big hurdle to overcome.

Sync Your Global Address List with mGALSync

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:00 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2005/01/03/345944.aspx

"If you have Active Directory deployed in your enterprise, you've probably noticed that while ActiveSync does a great job of syncing contacts that you have saved in Outlook there is no built in way to sync your GAL down to your Windows Mobile device. mGALSync is a cheap 3rd party app (built on .NET) that fills the gap. What I like most about this app is that it lets you define a filter so if your company has a huge GAL (like we do here), you can have it sync only the subset you want."

User submitted image

Robert Levy posted this on the Windows Mobile Blog yesterday. It sounds like a very handy little tool. Does anyone here have a GAL that they can try this out with and report back on it's performance? You can download a trial or purchase a copy from the developers web site.

Sync Files with Rubber Stamped Data Sync 2.1

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:15 AM

http://www.smartphone.net/smartphonethoughts/software_detail.asp?id=361

"This software allows you to sync files and directories (and subdirectories) to and from any location on your mobile device, storage card or PC. This software doesn't install any software on the phone, instead, it runs completely from the users PC. The program features a system tray icon and the ability to "auto sync" every time you connect your device. In addition, it also has the ability to sync on a schedule and to download and sync individual files from the web."

User submitted image

Has anyone here used this? It looks like a really good solution to the missing file conduit in ActiveSync - which I just don't understand why Microsoft left it out. Anyway, it's only $11.95 and there is a 30 day trail version available. If you want to grab or buy a copy, you can do so here. [Affiliate]
