Microsoft's Tellme Announces 'One Button' Voice Access

Posted by Pete Paxton in "Smartphone News" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.tellme.com/about/media_c...0429-one-button

"Today Tellme®, a subsidiary of Microsoft® Corp. and pioneer of voice services, announced the first mobile voice service to combine content and communications, simplifying how people interact with their phones every day. Unlike other voice-based services, Tellme is the first to allow people to press one button, say what they want and get it, whether that is to send a text, make a call or search for information. Tellme has designed a unique version of this experience specifically for Windows phones due out this fall."

Boy, Tellme sure has come a long way over the years. I've used their service over the years but they have really added a bunch of features for Windows Mobile 6.5. Many commands to give at a push of a button. To call someone, text someone, find a restaurant, check weather, movies and so on. Hopefully when it's truly implemented it will work smoothly and conveniently and people will want to use it. What do you guys think, do you plan to use it a ton or do you think it'll be an app that falls short?

Windows Mobile Shakes with Fear: Microsoft Hints at Office and Voice Recognition Applications on the iPhone and iPod touch

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Competition" @ 12:25 AM

"The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant is already the largest software developer for Apple's Mac platform outside of the Mac maker itself, with Fortune's Big Tech blog estimating that its Mac Business Unit generates revenues in excess of $350 million and profits of over $200 million each year. Add to that the firm's expertise in its proprietary Exchange email protocols and business email systems, and it's almost a certainty that Microsoft will be among those bearing fresh wares for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch a bit later this year, Tom Gibbons, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Specialized Devices and Applications Group, told the business publication. "We do have experience with that environment, and that gives us confidence to be able to do something," he said. "The key question is, what is the value that we need to bring?" Gibbons' team of Mac developers, which actually resides in Mountain View, Calif., just a few miles from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, is reportedly weighing its most viable options for an initial native iPhone application, which appears as if it will fall within the Office family of productivity applications."

It wasn't too long ago that Apple announced Exchange support for the iPhone and iPod touch. The implications here have yet to be seen, but come June, we'll likely see the two devices consume a reasonable chunk of Windows Mobile's market share. What about Office? It's always been one of Windows Mobile's biggest selling points. The iPhone and iPod touch lack it, but that may soon change, and if it does, it has the potential to be huge. Add in Tellme and a host of other applications and Microsoft will need to find new ways to make Windows Mobile as popular as it once was.

Microsoft To Buy Voice Recognition Company Tellme

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 04:29 PM

"Microsoft today announced it has purchased TellMe, the voice powered search provider, for an undisclosed sum estimate at $800 million to one billion. Microsoft made the purchase to integrate TellMe's voice services into its new Windows Live products, however TellMe will remain an independently run subsidiary. TellMe currently power the 411 and other voice-based systems for many carriers, as well as FedEx and other companies. Many people first used TellMe by dialing the system directly at 1 800 555 TELL, which can still be used for services like taxis, movie times and driving directions, before its services were offered through more common outlets."

Out of all of my pet peeves, voice automated systems are right up there with touch based screens. In fact, I might dislike voice automated systems more than I dislike finger smudges! There is just something extraordinarily frustrating about talking to an automated system, especially when you are expecting to speak with a real individual. All annoyances aside, if Microsoft could find a way to integrate this new technology into their Windows Live Search application without all the quirks and frustrations that come with talking to an automated system, I would be one very happy Smartphone (Standard) user! :D
