The Three Musketeers

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.mobilitysite.com/

Well I could have called them the three stooges too. I actually like one of them so without further fanfare here are three video peeks at some new contenders. Mousing over each image will give you links to the Mobility Site page with the actual clip.

First we have the Asus Aries:

Next, the HP iPAQ 500, I'll pass on this one:

Finally, my favorite, the HTC VOX:

Nuggets Mobile Search Engine Free for Three Months

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.mynuggets.net

"The Nuggets mobile search engine allows you to search the Internet from your mobile phone, including natural language search via SMS. As part of a new promotion, it is now available for free for a three-month trial period. The developer, Linguit GmbH, has made the service available for free for a three-month trial period extending from February to the end of April 2005 to encourage new users to try the service. No fees are changed beyond what phone operators may charge users for sending a text message to the service, while the service itself will be free."

This might be of interest to some of you. I don't know why one would want to pay for such a service as it is free from other sources. It is only available for O2, Orange, T-Mobile, and Vodafone providers at the present time according to the web site.

Two Of Three New Motorola Smartphones Are Linux Based

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20040820A7030.html

"Motorola introduced a lineup of smartphone models for the second half the A768i and A780 with Motorolas new Linux smartphone OS and the MPx220 in Japan yesterday. The three models will be launched in the second half of this year. The embedded Linux OS for Motorolas smartphones is currently being developed at the companys Personal Communication Sector (PCS) in Beijing, China. The company has plans to expand its offerings of Linux-based smartphones in the future, according to sources at the company."

Motorola doesn't believe in putting all its eggs in one basket. When it comes to Smartphones it has models based on Windows Mobile, Linux and Windows CE. It does prove beyond doubt that Motorola is serious about becoming a major player in the Smartphone market. Also the company must innovate if it has to maintain its position in the market. However, this news article reminds me of the earlier suspicions that people had regarding Motorola's commitment to the Microsoft Smartphone platform. That Motorola is going to make Windows Mobile Smartphones till its own proprietary Linux based Smartphone OS is solid and ready for prime time. What are your thoughts?

Hold the Phone, Three Years Later

Posted by Eric Lin in "THOUGHT" @ 03:00 PM

I didn't step out the swamp with 10 1/2 gatorz, but I did finally get to hold, even own a Smartphone. Back in the days of smaller.com, in the beginning of my public obsession with smarter mobile phones, I was contacted by someone on the Smartphone team with a little video preview of the avenger (a greyscale version of the Compal AR11). Month after month someone would sneak me a preview of what had been changed or improved, and I couldn't stop drooling. It's literally been three years since my first peek, and now I have a Smartphone of my own. Sure things were a bit shaky at the start, but they've been improving rapidly, even during the first generation release. if 2002 is this good, just imagine what these phones will be like at version 3.0, when Microsoft traditionally gets things right. I'm excited for the present, and even more for the future. Honestly the prospect of Smartphone 2003 has me so excited, I'm not sure if I ever think about whatever version 3.0 will be. I look forward to sharing my excitement about the Smartphone platform and about the mobile lifestyle with you.
