Hands-On Time With the Vox Brothers - HTC S710 (GSM) and S720 (CDMA)

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 07:00 PM

http://tinyurl.com/yt52fg

"Yesterday afternoon I was fortunate enough to be invited by HTC to a small gathering of press people to look at new HTC devices. It was an informal discussion setting, so I wasn't taking many notes: the real purpose was to show us the two new devices that they had announced, the HTC Advantage and the HTC Shift. They also passed around some new phones I hadn't seen before - one was the HTC S720, a CDMA phone that looks similar to the Vox and will be released by Telus in Canada. There's another phone, with a steel blue finish, that I can't identify. I've sent out emails asking for more information on each phone but I haven't heard anything back yet. For now, here are a series of photos comparing the new phones to my current phone, a T-Mobile Dash."

User submitted image

We have heard a lot, and seen a lot of photos of the HTC S710 (Vox). It is an amazing QWERTY-slider smartphone for the GSM networks. At the CTIA 2007 HTC surprised everyone by introducing to the attendees S710's brother the HTC S720, which is a CDMA device that supports the fast EV-DO data networks. Telus in Canada is supposed to be launching it, but we can be sure that this smartphone will be hitting the American store shelves. The only question is - who will get this awesome device, Verizon or Sprint? Anyway, Jason got to spend some time with the upcoming HTC devices at the CTIA 2007. He got some side angle shots that clearly shows the size difference between the Vox family and the T-Mobile Dash.

Unofficial Western Australian Daylight Saving Time Update for Windows Mobile

Posted by Darius Wey in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:00 AM

Last November, the Parliament of Western Australia passed the Daylight Saving Bill (No. 2) 2006, which provides for a three-year trial of daylight saving in all areas of Western Australia (including the state capital of Perth), beginning and ending on the following dates:

- December 3, 2006 to March 25, 2007
- October 28, 2007 to March 30, 2008
- October 26, 2008 to March 29, 2009

Prior to the commencement of the three-year trial, Microsoft introduced a collection of updates for its primary Windows and Exchange products. Unfortunately, Windows Mobile was neglected and it has since been confirmed that an official update will not be released for the platform. Microsoft's official solution is the manual alteration of the timezone setting of a Pocket PC or Smartphone to GMT+9 (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, or Seoul) during the DST period and the reversion to GMT+8 Perth outside of the DST period. Many residents and visitors of Western Australia have expressed their unhappiness over this solution's lack of automation and increased vulnerability, so to counter this, I have created unofficial Western Australian DST updates for Windows Mobile and am releasing them today as an alternative to Microsoft's suggested workaround.

Read on for further details.
Two updates are available for download. The first update patches Windows Mobile for the Western Australian daylight saving period starting December 3, 2006 and ending March 25, 2007. The second update patches Windows Mobile for the two Western Australian daylight saving periods, October 28, 2007 to March 30, 2008, and October 26, 2008 to March 29, 2009, and all subsequent daylight saving periods in the event that daylight saving is implemented permanently (based on the results of the referendum following the summer of 2008-2009). Please be aware that these are unofficial updates for Windows Mobile and they are in no way affiliated with Microsoft. Installation and use of the updates is at your own risk. If you have any questions or comments, or you encounter any issues, please post them in this thread, and I will endeavour to help you out as best as possible.

Download
There are currently four update files available - two for Pocket PCs and two for Smartphones. Compatibility has been confirmed with Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, and Windows Mobile 5.0. Download the appropriate CAB files and store them on your Pocket PC or Smartphone.

- Unofficial Update for Western Australian DST (2006 to 2007) - Pocket PC, 1.3KB, CAB
- Unofficial Update for Western Australian DST (2007 to 2008, 2008 to 2009) - Pocket PC, 1.3KB, CAB
- Unofficial Update for Western Australian DST (2006 to 2007) - Smartphone, 0.67KB, CAB
- Unofficial Update for Western Australian DST (2007 to 2008, 2008 to 2009) - Smartphone, 0.67KB, CAB

Installing and Using the Update - December 3, 2006 to March 25, 2007
Please note that file names and application names listed in the following screenshots may differ slightly from what you see on screen.

User submitted image

Locate the appropriate CAB file using File Explorer - that is, westaust_dst0607_ppc.cab for Pocket PCs, or westaust_dst0607_sp.cab for Smartphones. Highlight the file and tap it once (Pocket PC) or use your action button once (Pocket PC or Smartphone) to commence installation.

User submitted image

You may be prompted to select a target location for the update (titled Unofficial Update for Western Australian DST). This should be left on the default setting of Device.

User submitted image

User submitted image

After a brief moment, the update will install. Newer devices will issue a display compatibility warning. This can be safely ignored.

User submitted image

You may be required to reconfigure your home timezone settings to GMT+8 Perth via the Clock & Alarms applet (Pocket PC) or Date & Time applet (Smartphone). You may also want to configure your secondary clock (Pocket PC only) to another GMT+8 timezone (e.g., Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, or Taipei) to ensure that GMT+8 Perth is indeed one hour ahead during the daylight saving period.

At the end of the daylight saving period (March 25, 2007 at 3:00AM AWDT), your Pocket PC or Smartphone will automatically revert to standard time and notify you of the change.

Installing and Using the Update - October 28, 2007 to March 29, 2009
Following the end of the first daylight saving period (March 25, 2007 at 3:00AM AWDT), it is necessary to install the second update to meet the new commencement rule of future daylight saving periods. As per the previous section of this article, locate the appropriate CAB file - that is, westaust_dst07na_ppc.cab for Pocket PCs, or westaust_dst07na_sp.cab for Smartphones - and install it (Windows Mobile will uninstall the older update automatically).

This second update will be valid beyond March 29, 2009, if daylight saving is implemented on a permanent basis.

Uninstalling the Update
If daylight saving in Western Australia does not continue post-March 29, 2009, or if at any time and for whatever reason you feel that you no longer require the update, you can safely uninstall it via the Remove Programs applet in Windows Mobile. The update is listed as Unofficial Update for Western Australian DST. After uninstalling, you may need to reconfigure your timezone to GMT+8 Perth.

User submitted image

Darius Wey enjoys all forms of technology. His time is usually channeled into mobile devices, digital media, application and web development, graphic design, and his Xbox 360. He lives in Perth, Western Australia, and even after two months, has yet to adjust to the new daylight saving rules.

Daylight Saving Time - Windows Mobile Fix

Posted by Kris Kumar in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.edgeblog.net/2007/daylight-saving-time-windows-mobile-fix/

"As discussed here, the Daylight Saving Time change for 2007 is going to cause problems for unpatched technologies. Most vendors, including Microsoft, have released patches. One big area that is lacking is Windows Mobile smartphones & PDAs. Microsoft release a registry fix and instructed the carriers to push out a patch. Most of the carriers, in their infinite wisdom, have neglected to do so. If you rely on your Windows smartphone, you need this fix. Microsoft published the registry fix here. This fix requires you to build a CAB file and then install it. To save you the trouble, I have bundled the CAB file for you."

I know that some of you would love to see this DST madness go away, but unfortunately for you folks (and painfully for the rest of us) the time change will happen four weeks early. Microsoft has been kind enough to provide a fix, a fix that is supposed to improve your CAB file building skills. :? In case you are wondering what it takes to build a CAB file, stop, Bill over at edgeblog has done the necessary labour for us; thanks Bill.

Motorola Q Pro in the Wild, This Time it's for Verizon Wireless

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 05:22 PM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/11/11/motorola-q-pro-in-the-wild-this-time-its-for-verizon-wireless/

"First, we heard rumors that Verizon Wireless would be getting an updated Motorola Q, then came the upgraded specs of this black beauty. Then the supposed MVNO version for Amp'd Mobile showed up in our life. Finally we had a sneak peak of what would be the HSDPA version. And now the flurry of pictures continue. However, this time it's for Verizon Wireless and unfortunately the keypad doesn't look as snazzy as its GSM counterpart. A Howard Forums member decided to give us all a little treat and show us this new rubberized black beauty. No word on what the exact specs that Verizon will be giving us, but we are sure they won't neglect us this time around. Now try not to drool and check out some more pics after the break!"

User submitted image

According to these photos Motorola is working on an updated version of the Q for the Verizon Wireless network. The specs are not known at this time; all we know is that it will have the MOTOPRO Mobility Suite, which is a software package aimed at enterprise users. It also looks like it has the same rubberized body style that the T-Mobile Dash (a.k.a. HTC S620) has now popularized. I wish Motorola had changed the keyboard button style from the current rounded ones to the flatter Norman style.

SlingPlayer Mobile is Free for Limited Time

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.slingmedia.com/us/press/pressreleases-082206.php

"Sling Media, Inc., a digital lifestyle products company, today announced that its SlingPlayer Mobile TV software is free, for a limited time, to new Slingbox owners who buy and register their Slingbox between August 15, 2006 and September 16, 2006. A $29.99 value, SlingPlayer Mobile is a software package that gives Slingbox owners the ability to watch and control their home TV from any network-enabled mobile phone or handheld computer (PDA) powered by Microsofts Windows Mobile operating system."

Got a Slingbox? Sling Media has just released a new version of it's Pocket PC client and the first version of their Smartphone client. To make it even better, you can get this $30 value for free for a limited time. If you're not familiar with what a Slingbox can do for your Smartphone, then you'll want to check out the review we posted earlier this year. In my opinion, the software is easily worth the $30 price tag. So getting a free version makes it even more appealing. :D

It's Time to Reduce The Tangle of Wires We Use for Gadgets

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 02:05 PM

http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20060629.html

"I was interviewing Howard Stringer, the CEO of Sony, on stage at The Wall Street Journal's "D: All Things Digital" conference a few weeks ago, when domestic guru Martha Stewart rose to ask a question. Dipping into a shopping bag full of charger cords and electrical adapters for the electronic devices she carries -- laptop, cellphone, digital camera, BlackBerry -- Ms. Stewart asked Mr. Stringer why each device requires a different, and incompatible, charger. "Why can't this thing be this thing?" she asked, holding up two identical-looking, but very different, charger cables. The audience of high-tech executives, identifying with her complaint, applauded."

This topic is not new and we have discussed it many times, but I think the time has come for us gadget lovers to stage a revolt. Walt Mossberg in his latest article, along with the help of home-maker Martha Stewart [I am now a Martha Stewart fan :)], is shedding light on the corporate greed that is keeping the consumers from getting a uniform charger. I can understand that the battery size cannot be standardized, but the charger and the connector can be common. While shopping for our gadgets we spend a considerable amount of time researching for the smallest and the lightest version of the product; when it is the time to travel with our compact gadgets, it is ironic that we find ourselves burdened by the backpack full of travel chargers. How can we end this corporate greed?

41% of Americans Use Their Cell Phone to Kill Time

Posted by Kris Kumar in "ARTICLE" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.cellular-news.com/story/16810.php

"The cell phone has become an integral and, for some, essential communications tool that has helped owners gain help in emergencies. Fully 74% of the Americans who own mobile phones say they have used their hand-held device in an emergency and gained valuable help. Another striking impact of mobile technology is that Americans are using their cell phones to shift they way they spend their time. Some 41% of cell phone owners say they fill in free time when they are traveling or waiting for someone by making phone calls. And 44% say they wait to make most of their cell calls for the hours when they do not count against their "anytime" minutes in their basic calling plan."

Here are some of the highlights of this report:
Only 8% of cell phone owners who have email access use their cell phones for email and 24% would like to have or use this feature
14% of owners who have Internet access use the feature to surf the Internet
41% fill in free time while traveling or waiting for someone by making phone calls
44% wait for the night and weekend hours to make the phone calls ;-)
28% admitted that the cell phone is a distraction while driving
86% was irritated at least occasionally by loud and annoying cell users in public places, 8% admitted of being guilty of being the culprit
36% have been shocked by their monthly bills from time to time :)
The complete report can be viewed over here">http://www.pewinternet.org/pdfs/PIP_Cell_phone_study.pdf]here. [PDF]

Time to Settle Down and Lock In?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "THOUGHT" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,47111

"Those who know me will say I have a passion for the latest gadgets, while others dare call it an addiction. Either way, I've come to grips with reality that it's a downright expensive hobby. Like my brother-in-law whose labor of love is tweaking an old Mazda RX-7 with parts on eBay, or my uncle who collects exotic fish in a humongous aquarium in his den, my endeavours have been in obtaining the best Pocket PC devices over the last few years. But, there comes a time when you ask yourself if you're doing anything productive with that device, or are you just happy with its features until the "honeymoon period" is over? I've been a Cingular customer since December 2004, and have popped my SIM card in nearly a dozen Windows Mobile Pocket PCs and Smartphones I purchased, then eBaying or selling off the device towards the purchase of the next every few months."

This scenario sounds all too familiar. I'm not as bad as some of you, but I have been known to run out and buy the latest phone/gadget that catches my eye. Raphael over at our sister site, Pocket PC Thoughts, is having a hard time deciding if he should settle down and sign a 2 year contract. That's a big step and I know I'm not ready for something like that. I don't think I can lock in a device for 2 years. I fully expect the next 2 years to be boom years. Things are changing so fast, todays handset will be long forgotten in just 24 short months. What do you think? What are your plans? Is anyone thinking of settling down and locking in?

The Carriers have Once Again Pulled Out Their Hatchets, the Victim This Time is Sling Media

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THOUGHT" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.forbes.com/technology/2006/02/27/cingular-verizon-sprint-cz_td_0227slingbox.html

"We have no immediate plans to run that service, What runs on our network are our services."

The above statement was issued by Jeffrey Nelson of Verizon Wireless and "that service" is the Sling Media's Windows Mobile based service that lets the users of Slingbox view their recorded TV shows on their mobile devices. Why doesn't Verizon want their customers to watch their favorite recorded shows, because Verizon offers it own video service. The one thing I could not understand from this Forbes article is, why Sling Media is seeking consent from the carriers? Am I missing something, shouldn't a customer who is paying $$$ for the high speed data networks be allowed to pick and choose their own services? Which means Sling Media should be free to offer whatever services it feels is right for its customers. Maybe I have not read the fine print on the terms and conditions for data network access. That said, the carriers are known for their walled gardens and Verizon probably leads the pack, when it comes to nixing technology and services that benefit its customers without benefiting its own pockets. When will this end? I would like to take a moment to talk to the carriers - please, the high speed data networks have plenty of bandwidth for your own services and your customers', by blocking your customer's wishes you are turning them away from your own services.

Time Reviews T-Mobile SDA Smartphone

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1160063,00.html

"While mobile e-mail fanatics are discussing the BlackBerry-killer software introduced by Microsoft at the 3GSM mobile-phone conference in Barcelona, I want to talk about an e-mail-ready phone that's just hitting the market T-Mobile's SDA. The carrier launched it this week, along with a big brother, the MDA Pocket PC. Both phones run versions of Windows Mobile 5.0, though the SDA is no larger than a typical candy-bar phone."

User submitted image

I always enjoy reading the "non-geek" perspectives on our toys. It almost always seems like they have no idea what type of device they are looking at. This one isn't as bad as most. See what you think. The bottom line for us "fanatics" is the more of these that are sold to the "non-fanatics", the better. :)

Orneta Checkers - Free For a Limited Time

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 06:15 AM

http://www.orneta.com/products/checkers/

"The object of checkers is simple, capture all of your opponents pieces by jumping them, or block them so that they cannot be moved. Your pieces may only move away from you, to a connected diagonal square that is unoccupied. If an opponents piece occupies a diagonally connected square, you may capture your opponents piece by jumping to the next diagonal space in the same direction if unoccupied. If you can move one of your pieces to the other end of the board, it will become a king, and can move forward and reverse."

Orneta is offering a 100% discount on Checkers for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. It is a limited time offer, so if you're interested, head on over to Handango and grab a copy. Don't forget to apply the coupon code 54CAAEB to get your discount. The offer is good for the first 1000 people or until October 31st.

Scotty Beams Up for the Final Time

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,163092,00.html

"James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command "Beam me up, Scotty," died early Wednesday. He was 85. Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, he said."

User submitted image

Alright, who among us has never looked at your phone and uttered those famous words, "Beam me up, Scotty". I know that all of you flip phone users have done this more often then you would like to admit. ;) So lets all pull out our phones and give a hearty Beam Me Up in honor of James Doohan.

Companies are Looking for Face Time on your Cellphone

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 09:15 AM

http://www.adverblog.com/archives/001687.htm

"Big brands are launching this summer mobile marketing campaigns in the US. Bringing with them the experience of similar initiatives run in Europe in the last few years, companies like Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Heineken have started using mobile elements to target the American market. AdAge reports consumers packaged-goods brands like Nesquik and Starburst are particularly active, opting for low risk on-pack promotions. Coca-Cola instead is exploring the rich and fascinating world of mobile games."

I'm a little unsure if this is a good idea or not. I don't mind seeing the odd advertisement, but I don't want to be billed for the SMS ad message sent from a company. Have any of you seen one of these mobile marketing campaigns? I would be interested to know how in-your-face they are?

Time as Football Ref Serves Marketing Exec Well

Posted by Kris Kumar in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 01:30 PM

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/216790_msftnotebook21.html

"Microsoft Corp. executive Suzan DelBene has worked in the software industry for more than 15 years. But her approach to the business was also shaped by a different experience -- her five years on the football field. DelBene was a referee at high school and youth football games in the Portland and Seattle areas before she went to business school. She says the job taught her how to make timely decisions with confidence even in situations where the available information is incomplete."

User submitted image

Microsoft is known for hiring the best and has probably the most challenging interview process. The article talks about Microsoft marketing executive Suzan DelBene and her group, the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division. The mobile division has been doing well, the team won victory over Palm in the PDA championships, now the team is focusing on the smartphone trophy. ;-)

Getting Real Time with Mike Hall

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.mobidogs.com/dPage16.aspx

"While attending the recent Featured Community Summit at the Microsoft campus in Redmond, I had the pleasure of an hour of Mike Hall's time. The job title that he currently has is one of Technical Product Manager, which apparently falls under the marketing group, however, he describes his role as more of a technical evangelist than anything else. His day-to-day activities include things like researching embedded technologies, building code samples, recording tutorials, communicating with the press and speaking at both Microsoft and third-party conferences, all at a deep technical level."

This is an interesting peek at what might be coming our way.
