Big Dreams for Tiny Screens - The Future of Mobile Entertainment

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 05:45 AM

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/21/business/yourmoney/21mobile.html?ex=1148875200&en=6ddaa0952263117b&ei=5070&emc=eta1

"Digital Chocolate is this company's name, and the business focuses solely on developing games and applications for mobile phones. Although it has some trappings of a Silicon Valley start-up, circa 1999 one recent morning a 20-something employee rolled up for work here on a skateboard Digital Chocolate differs in one significant way. Its founder and chief executive, Trip Hawkins, is not a typical bootstrapping young entrepreneur. Mr. Hawkins, 52, was employee No. 68 at Apple Computer before he left that company in 1982 to start Electronic Arts, now the pre-eminent video game maker. Never shy about expressing his opinions, Mr. Hawkins, not surprisingly, brandishes a theory about programming for the mobile phone."

This is a pretty interesting article on the future direction that mobile entertainment/games is going in. I like the social connection idea. I think there's a great need for games to be more interactive and multi-player. I'm just not sure about the monthly fees. Then again, I've never been a fan of ongoing monthly fees. Give it a read and let us know what you think.

Samsungs Tiny Fuel Cell

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 02:00 PM

http://us.gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/well-believe-when-we-see-it-samsungs-tiny-fuel-cell-152330.php

"Is it real? Samsung announced it has developed a prototype of a fuel cell that can be used in PDAs and portable multimedia players. This fuel cell technology works by converting methanol fuel into hydrogen which is combined with oxygen in a seemingly magic process that [insert miracle here] results in energy and heat, with water as a byproduct."

I've been hearing about these things for some time now. They seem to have a long way to go before they ever become practical. The recharging process appears to make the whole thing more trouble than its worth. Filling up something with more gas seems more primitive than just plugging it in for a few hours or carrying an extra battery. Ever fill a butane lighter?

Mobile Carriers to Test Out Tiny Ads for Tiny Screens

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 06:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/18/mobile-carriers-to-test-out-tiny-ads-for-tiny-screens/

"Well, it was inevitable really, but get ready for a whole new world of phone based advertisement. Verizon and Sprint Nextel are tiptoeing around the idea of opt in video ads, with plans to test the functionality in March but fears of upsetting consumers, while ESPN is jumping into the fray with Visa, Nike, and Hilton Hotels all lined up to provide video ads to accompany their service."

Yeah I bet they are tip toeing around the idea. As long as I can opt out of all this garbage if they want to give reduced rates for looking at ads, fine. The problem is once the camel's head is in the tent, well you know the rest. It figures the Verizon is one of the first to want this. Lets hope the "test" falls on its face.

Tiny Canadian Town gets Cutting Edge Technology

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 12:00 PM

"'Project Chapleau' will see Bell expand its fibre-optic network in Chapleau, Ont., a town 320 kilometres northeast of Sault Ste. Marie with 3,000 inhabitants. Besides the Bell fibre enhancement, Nortel will install a wireless mesh network in the municipality for local, mobile hooks into the fibre backbone. Thus the firms aim is to bring high-speed Web connectivity to the area, a first for Chapleau. As well as the new network, project stakeholders will give Chapleau citizens access to video conferencing and other collaborative technologies. Over a period of time the venture will scrutinize the ways in which people use the new applications, to investigate the effects of these novel programs on government services, medicine, education and economic development."

I created the map above in MapPoint to help any of you that might never have heard of Chapeau before. ;) I think this is going to be a very interesting study. A small town with just 3000 people, will have access to better technology than many of the urban areas we all live in. In the end, I would expect Chapleau to experience a very substantial economic boom. After all, the land and buildings are cheaper, there would be plenty of people willing to work, and not to mention the state of the art high speed network. What do you think? Will Chapleau end up being like a kid in a candy store or like selling ice at the North Pole?

2GB Tiny Hard Drive From Toshiba For Mobile Devices

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 10:15 AM

http://www.mobilepipeline.com/57300019

"Toshiba said Thursday that it is about to start shipping its .85-inch, 2GB hard drive aimed at use in smartphones and other mobile devices. In addition, the company said it will start shipping a 4 GB version of the drive about the middle of the year with capacities increasing to as much as 8 GB in 2006."

Wow! 8O I'm guessing something like is going to be built into the device. Do you think it's a safe bet that the battery drain would be reduced along with the size?

Tiny eBook Reader for Smartphone

Posted by David McNamee in "SOFTWARE" @ 07:59 PM

http://www.slashphone.com/6/500.html

Do you like to read books? Do you like your Smartphone? Have you ever wanted to read books on your Smartphone? Well, now you can. The Tiny eBook Reader supports reading text files, HTML files, and unlocked Microsoft Reader .LIT files.

I love Microsoft Reader. I think that it is one of the most underrated products Microsoft has ever shipped. It's nice that someone has implemented support for it on the Smartphone.

New York Times: "How Tiny Swiss Cellphone Chips Helped Track Global Terror Web"

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 04:16 PM

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/04/international/europe/04PHON.html?ei=5007&en=71c64fa22f23d30a&ex=1393736400&partner=USERLAND&pagewanted=all&position=

"The terrorism investigation code-named Mont Blanc began almost by accident in April 2002, when authorities intercepted a cellphone call that lasted less than a minute and involved not a single word of conversation. Investigators, suspicious that the call was a signal between terrorists, followed the trail first to one terror suspect, then to others, and eventually to terror cells on three continents.

What tied them together was a computer chip smaller than a fingernail. But before the investigation wound down in recent weeks, its global net caught dozens of suspected Qaeda members and disrupted at least three planned attacks in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, according to counterterrorism and intelligence officials in Europe and the United States."

Amazing stuff - give it a read.

Toshiba Readies Truly Tiny Hard Drive: Sub-1-Inch Drive Likely to Appear in Portable Devices Later This Year

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 05:55 PM

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,114180,tk,dn010804X,00.asp

"Toshiba has unveiled a prototype hard drive that's smaller than any currently on the market. The drive could start appearing in devices such as cellular telephones and digital music players before the end of this year. The drive is the same length and width as an SD memory card and is 1 millimeter thicker, says Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing at Toshiba's U.S. storage media division. A prototype on display at the Consumer Electronics Show here this week has a data storage capacity of 2GB. Toshiba is also planning to produce a sample drive with 4GB capacity around the middle of this year, Brzeski says.

...It is expected to be used in small handheld portable devices such as cellular telephones, digital audio players, PDAs, digital still cameras, and camcorders, Brzeski says. Serious talks with manufacturers of some of these devices have already begun, he says. Toshiba expects to begin sample production in the middle of this year and begin commercial production in late 2004."

Although I greatly prefer Flash-based memory concepts to spinning platters of metal, thinking about a Smartphone with 4 GB of on-board storage makes me weak in the knees. 8O
