SP5 and SP5m MSFP ROM Update Available From i-mate

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 06:30 AM

http://www.clubimate.com

It's here! If you have a i-mate SP5 or SP5m Smartphone, you can login to Club i-mate and download the latest ROM that includes MSFP. :D You can also download the ROM updates from the FTP server - but be careful. There are 2 versions of this update for the SP5(m) devices. If you go through the web pages it offers up 2.6.331.2, but over FTP you will also see a version number 2.5.331.2. I'm not sure what the difference is, but I think it's safe to go with the file being offered up from the web site. I have also found that the download speed is faster from the website - most likely due to caching on the web server.

Just in case MSFP isn't enough of a reason for you to upgrade your device, I have included a full list of all the updates below. ;)

Microsoft Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP):
Addition of the MSFP allowing Direct Push email, remote device wiping, security policy enforcement and Global Address List Lookup for customers using a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 with Service Pack 2.

File beaming over Bluetooth:
It is now possible to beam files over Bluetooth using the file manager.

Improved radio functionality:
 Microphone level has been boosted.
Cell Broadcast display is now supported.
 Line2 functionality introduced.
 Busy Tone corrected.
 Improved the echo suppression.
 USSD service support is upgraded.

Updated MMS:
MMS will now operate until there is only 1 Mb of free storage space. Previously this limit was set at 4Mb.
MMS client updated to the current version

Improved Pocket Internet Explorer:
Frames functionality now supported in the browser.
Quick navigation using Page Up key (key 2) and Page Down key (key 8 ).

Keypad Light Timing:
The timeout of the keypad light can now be set. There is a utility in the 'Utilities' section of the SP5m support pages that will let you set it. Note that setting the keypad light over 8 seconds will cause significant reduction in battery life.

Voice Dial:
Voice Dial reliability from handset has been improved.

Communication Manager:
Communication Manager has been updated to allow current data services to be stopped, Direct Push email to be started/stopped using a single button press, and flight mode to be switched on/off.

Reminders:
When the device is locked, calendar reminders can be snoozed by using the joystick. Previously it was only possible to press the numeric key associated with the menu option to snooze a reminder.

Bluetooth:
Car Kit interface: Address book sync can now be performed to car kits.
Bluetooth Beaming from file manager has now been improved (more reliable and faster).

Java:
Updated Java client to latest version.

Earnings Update: Microsoft Mobile and Embedded Division Registers its First Profitable Quarter

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 05:30 AM

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,45974

"Microsoft just reported revenue and profit by segment for the quarter ended December 31, 2005, their second quarter. Microsoft's fiscal year runs from July to June. For the first time in the history of the mobile and embedded division, they have made a profit. On sales of $101 million, they earned $20 million in earnings. It has been a long time coming for a team that released their first major product in 1996 when Windows CE 1.0 when gold in November. Who'd have thought it would take nearly a decade to turn a profit? Any bets as to where the mobile device market and Microsoft's share of it will be in another 10 years?"

User submitted image

Ed Hansberry, over at our sister site Pocket PC Thoughts, has written a nice little commentary on the latest earnings report from Microsoft. Like Ed, I would also like to know as to where the mobile device market and Microsoft's share of it is headed. Palm is now making a Windows Mobile device; in the future, the MSFP based devices (and Moto Q) will hopefully cause a big dent in RIM's market share. There are many other positive developments; we would like to hear your thoughts and comments on how it will help shape the future. The complete Microsoft earnings report and the PowerPoint presentation can be accessed over here.

Earnings Update: HTC Q4 Sales, Income Rocket

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 03:10 PM

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/01/27/htc_results_q4_05/

"Taiwan's HTC saw sales leapt 66.2 per cent sequentially during the fourth quarter of FY2005, according to the PDA-phone maker's provisional, unaudited financial results. For the three months to 31 December 2005, the company realised revenues of TWD27.53bn ($862.32m), well up on the previous quarter's TWD16.56bn ($518.71m). Then, HTC reported a net income of TWD2.78bn ($87.08m) before tax - for Q4, the figure had risen 84.5 per cent to TWD5.13bn ($160.69m)."

User submitted image

HTC has released the 2005 Q4 earnings report. It shows that total revenues for the year 2005 totaled NT$ 72,775 million and year-on-year growth was 99.95%. 8O Way to go HTC. I am sure everyone will agree with me, when I say that 2006 will be an even more spectacular year for HTC. They will be launching 3G devices and the much awaited flip Smartphone, the Star Track, this year.

Update on TinyThings Video Podcast

Posted by Mike Temporale in "DEVELOPER" @ 10:00 AM

http://neopoleon.com/tinythings/blogs/main/archive/category/1005.aspx

Back in December 2005 we linked to the brand new TinyThings Video podcast for Windows Mobile / Embedded developers produced by Rory Blyth. It's been a couple months, and I thought I should bring you up to speed on some of the new and cool stuff Rory has been doing on these podcasts. In Episode 2, Rory talks about getting started developing with the .NET CF for the Smartphone. Then in part 1 of Episode 4, he talks about using the Notification and Camera APIs, and this thing called Message Interception. This is great stuff for those of you looking to get your feet wet in the mobile development arena. 8)

Soti Releases Update to Pocket Controller

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.smartphone.net/Smartphonethoughts/software_detail.asp?id=630

Soti has released an update to the great Pocket Controller. The latest version, 5.05, adds multi-lingual keyboard support, enhanced battery and memory indicators, enhanced intrusion detection, enhanced support for Windows Mobile 5, and other minor fixes. I've spent some time working with Soti to fix some bugs I've come across since getting my SP5m back in November, and they have been fantastic in hunting down the problems. Pocket Controller is a great application. If haven't done so already, I suggest you give it a try. You can download a trial version or purchase a copy for $30.95 from our affiliate store.

i-mate SP3i ROM Update Version 2.3.33.21 Now Available, Includes Windows Media Player 10

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 07:45 AM

http://www.clubimate.com

I-mate has finally released the much awaited ROM update containing Windows Media Player 10 for its i-mate SP3i Smartphone (European version, 900Mhz). :-) Wonder what took i-mate so long to release this update? As an i-mate customer, who paid over $400 for the SP3i Smartphone and decided to buy an i-mate device (instead of the one sold by the carrier), the key deciding factor was the ROM updates. Even though i-mate has been doing a good job at releasing ROM updates for fixing problems and improving performance, the update with the WMP 10 was missing. Finally i-mate has decided to make their customers happy, after almost a year.

User submitted image

I-mate customers can login to the Club i-mate web site and download the ROM update from the SP3i support page. Not sure if a similar update is available for the SP3 model. I cannot access the SP3 support page. Maybe one of our readers can confirm it. Don't forget to backup your Smartphone data before applying the ROM update. I was able to able to update my SP3i without a hitch. :)

Update: Our reader mpattman has confirmed that a similar update is available for the i-mate SP3 (European version, 900Mhz) model also.
Following is the list of updates according to i-mate:

Sometimes the phone would say "Unable to answer call" if the user tried to answer the phone while the call was being forwarded to voicemail. This functionality has been corrected.
 USSD service support is upgraded.

Ringtones
mp3 ringtones can now be used

Updated MMS
Input phone numbers in "To" field using T9 "abc" mode, MMS cannot be sent while last number underlined.
After capturing picture, the device might go to album or other photo review option instead of returning to MMS client this has been corrected.
Sometimes, after capturing a video for inserting into an MMS, the wait cursor would cycle and it would not be possible to insert the MMS. This has been corrected.

Updated T9
 10 x 10 symbol table introduced.
Launching symbol table could delete words. This has been corrected.
When browsing to the web pages with text input field and keying in words, the very first letter might appear as a number. This has been corrected.

Update Allows Applications that Previously Failed to Now Install on the i600

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.samsungtelecom.com/support/mit/hck.asp

User submitted image

Straight from Samsung's web site is a registry update to allow you install applications that had failed to install before. The file you download is binary so I couldn't tell what changes are made to your phone but it appears to be for Verizon branded i600's. Those of you who apply this let us know how it works for you. :)

Motorola Releases MPx220 ROM Update

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:45 PM

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=632337

"I just tried using the Motorola System Update tool (v1.0.0.28) with my AT&T MPx220 (ROM v.343) attached. As usual, I let it connect to the device, then connect to the internet to search for an update. Usually a red check mark says "Failed" but not this time....SURPRISE! The following message appears: This update is only for AWS devices purchased in North America. You will be updated to ROM Version 1.39.00. This tool will update the Operating System on your device."

Any MPx220 owners tried this out yet? Post your experiences!

It is always nice to see when providers offer their customers the latest upgrades. Some North American counterparts could learn a lesson here...not to mention any names. :worried:

Motorola Set to Release Another ROM Update for MPx220

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 12:30 PM

http://promo.motorola.com/mpx220/index.html

User submitted image

We just received word that Motorola is working on a new ROM upgrade for the MPx220. Apparently all of the current ROM versions, included the much loved 1.30, are not up to Cingular's sound quality standards. We can't confirm when this update will be released, but according to this website, you will be able to upgrade it yourself, or contact Cingular for a replacement. I wonder if the update will add any other features besides the improved sound quality?

The guys at LandWare have just informed us that they have released an update to the 2005 Movie Guide. It includes all the latest and greatest award winning movies, and the not so great ones too! The updated movie guide now has complete details and reviews on over 21,000 films, and filmographies on over 35,000 Actors, Actresses and Directors. Plus, the update also uses better compression so the database doesn't take up as much room as before. :D

If you already own the 2005 Movie guide, you can upgrade for free from the LandWare site. Otherwise, you can purchase a full copy from our affiliate store.

i-mate SP3i ROM Update Version 1.2.33.21 Now Available

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 08:30 PM

http://clubimate.com/index.asp?PageAction=DEVICE_SP3I_UPD2

The latest ROM update for i-mate SP3i is now available on Club i-mate web site. This update, I believe, is for the UK edition, the 900MHz based version of SP3i. It updates the ROM from 1.1.33.21 to 1.2.33.21. The release notes does not mention Windows Media Player 10 update.

User submitted image

Don't forget to backup the data on your Smartphone before installing this update. Following are the updates in this release, as per the Club i-mate web site:
With the wired headset, you can now reject an incoming call by pressing and holding the "answer" button for 2 seconds
With the wired headset, you can now answer a call that is waiting whilst you are in another call by tapping the "answer" button
Polyphonic MIDI ringtones are now supported
Corrections:
The Gaming API (GAPI) problem of screen freeze has been fixed
The voice and data call handling software has been updated to improve stability
The camera auto-exposure has been corrected so that the picture will not "white-out" in bright conditions
T9 improvements for Activesync email, Internet Explorer and the symbol table
T9 Portuguese included by default in the operating system
Improved cursor control and multikey press
There are improvements in menu translations for Italian, Turkish, French and Portuguese users
 USSD services have been upgraded

Overall I don't think there is anything significant. I was eagerly waiting for the upgrade hoping that i-mate will provide the Windows Media Player 10. Now I am disappointed with i-mate. :(

Sierra Wireless Releases ROM Update for Voq

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 08:15 PM

http://www.voq.com/site/support/latest_software.voq

User submitted image

Sierra Wireless has released a new ROM for it's Voq line of Smartphones. This ROM update appears to add support for Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, a new version of Windows Media Player - I'm guessing that means version 10, MMS Client, better data connection and power management. If you're lucky enough to have a Voq, then I'm sure you are going to be excited about this update. Be sure to backup your data prior to the upgrade, just in case. ;) And let us know how things go with the new ROM. :)

Enhance the Performance of Your MPx220 by Downloading the New ROM Update.

Posted by Jerry Raia in "HARDWARE" @ 11:30 PM

http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/hellomoto/experience/mpx220/flash/softupdate.shtml

Well it may be a day late and a dollar short but Motorola seems to have come through with a flash update for your MPx220 to the latest and greatest 1.3 ROM version! "This update is only for Cingular devices purchased in North America." so proceed with caution. In addition if you already have 1.3 (as I do) there is no need to perform this update. Good Luck!! :)
