My CES Experience: Part 3 - The Final Chapter

Posted by Mike Temporale in "Smartphone Talk" @ 09:30 AM

To start off my next day at CES I was scheduled to meet with UTStarcom. I made my way through the show floor and found their booth, but was disappointed to hear that UTStarcom won't be making any product announcements at the show this year. Instead they wanted to tell me about all of their success stories from last year - argh. In the end I did manage to get a little information out of the person I was talking with. She told me that UTStarcom will be releasing a entry level Windows Mobile device at some point this year. Can't you just feel the thrill and excitement building? Heh, you heard it here first!

I made my way to the Jawbone booth in the parking lot where you could exchange your current headset for a Jawbone. I happily tossed my Motorola headset into their bin and they paired a Jawbone with my BlackJack. At first I found the headset to be awkward to get on and harder to get it to stay put. Perhaps I have Dumbo ears or something. But I couldn't get it to fit right. I spent the remainder of the show and trip home testing it out. It wasn't until a week later at the NRF trade show in New York when I was talking to a person by the name of Daniel Hopping. I noticed Daniel was using the Jawbone, so I asked how he liked it. Typically, people love it or they hate it. So far, I was leaning to the hate it because I couldn't get it to fit right - which means it's not going to work right. Daniel loved it and he explained that it took a little while before he did. You see, he had to bend the arm a little so that it would hold correctly on his ear. Ah-ha! That's what I was missing. A little tweak of the ear brace bar and everything is peachy. Now I can easily say it's the best darn headset I've ever used. Just make sure you give it a good try before you make your decission. The Jawbone has to fit correctly on your ear and the little white nib has to rest on your ...jawbone - hence the name. This helps the headset determine when you speak and when to mute/un-mute the microphone as well as when to invoke it's noise cancelling technology. Give the Jawbone some time, it's well worth it. :-) Oh, and thanks Daniel for the tip!

Next up was the Tablet PC Meetup put on by the guys from JKonTheRun. Another great event with lots of cool tablets to look at. I had a great talk with the HP rep about their hot new consumer line of Tablets as well as their existing enterprise line of Tablets. I really like the HP 2710p tablet - this thing is super thin and yet it's packed with features - including a business card scanner. This is on my short list to replace my, still pretty new, Fujitsu T4215 Tablet. :-) Read more...

My CES Experience: Part 2

Posted by Mike Temporale in "Smartphone Talk" @ 09:30 AM

After a quick couple hours sleep at my ultra posh hotel (yeah, I wish - there's a reason it was the cheapest place around.), it was off to start another event packed day. This time it started off with a horribly botched meet-up with Palm. First there was confusion over where they would pick us up, and then there was confusion over who exactly was meeting with us. Big thanks to Jerry & Judie from Gear Diary for helping us find our way. After all was said and done, Palm didn't really have anything earth shattering to share with us. In the end, it was a waste of a morning. :-(

Back to the show floor for me. I spent some time trolling around the Microsoft booth answering peoples Windows Mobile questions and I even got recognized a couple of times. (And to the guy in the C|Net jacket that mentioned how much he liked the site as he quickly passed me by; you should have stopped. I would have liked to chat with you a little.) The Microsoft booth always seemed busy and that goes for the Windows Mobile corner of the booth too. I got to watch Dale Coffin do a couple Windows Mobile demos on the stage. (Nice work Dale!) Overall, I would say Microsoft's Windows Mobile section had a pretty good buzz going on.

Before long it was time to head over to ShowStoppers event at the Wynn (Link Warning: Annoying voice over). The plan was to get to ShowStoppers early because I was double booked. We ended up arriving a little earlier that expected, which wasn't too bad since we checked out the Tiger Direct event. TD was sponsoring a race to see who could build a PC the quickest. They even had cheerleaders to cheer on the participants. The food was amazing - Shrimp, Sushi, Pork Tenderloin, Ravioli with sauce made fresh for you... Hat's off to Tiger Direct for putting on a great event. Far more than I would have expected from the discount online retailer. Read more...

USB Memory Key Round Up From CES

Posted by Mike Temporale in "Smartphone Talk" @ 02:00 PM

USB memory keys (or Jump Drives as some like to call them) have quickly replaced CDs as the de facto standard for distribution of press materials . I did still receive a some CDs from 2 or 3 different companies, most exhibitors provided a USB memory key with their information on it. I managed to take home 8 different USB memory keys. I thought it would be fun to do a run down of who I got a key from and what size it was. :-)

Starting from the smallest and working up to the largest:

128 MB - Skype
256 MB - Corsair
512 MB - Life ware, Legget & Platt, Stardock
1 GB - Kingston
2 GB - Lenovo (x2)

Yes, there's one missing from this picture. My wife grabbed one of the 2GB models from Lenovo before I was able to snap this picture! ;-)

My CES Experience: Part 1

Posted by Mike Temporale in "Smartphone Talk" @ 09:30 AM

While CES may have been a couple weeks ago, I haven't had the chance to post about my experiences yet. It was a great event and it provided me with plenty of opportunities to meet and talk with different companies and site owners. So, with the "better late than never" thought, I give you My CES 1.0 - part 1. :-)

I arrived in Las Vegas late in the evening on Saturday (the 5th of January), just 22 days after my last visit to the city. And that's not a bad thing either. Vegas is always a fun place to go visit - be it for vacation or work. Given the time change and my late arrival, I simply checked into my hotel and called it a night. Let the adventure wait until I had some sleep.

The fun and excitement started on Sunday as we (Steve Hughes, Eric Hicks, Johan van Mierlo, and Jason Dunn) started to make our way to the Samsung press event in the Sands Expo Center. We had all pre-registered for the press event. We arrived 15 minutes before the event was scheduled to start and the line up was crazy long. It went down the hall, around the corner and then around the other corner. Of course, this doesn't mean much if you don't know how long the hall is. So trust me when I say it was LONG and this was the line for press that had pre-registered. There was another line just as long on the other side of the conference room for people who had not registered. However that line wasn't moving very fast because each person had to prove credentials and register prior to getting in. The good news is that our line was moving - not fast, but moving. Before long we had rounded both corners and were about 50 feet from the entrance when the line stopped moving. Samsung representatives made their way down the line letting everyone know that they are full and can not allow anymore people into the room. As you can well imagine, this didn't go over well with a number of people. What's the point in pre-registration if you register too many people?! This didn't leave me feeling very happy about Samsung. Even the 1GB MP3 Player they handed out didn't take the sting away. I'm just plain disappointed that they would do something so stupid. I can understand that they might not have expected everyone to show so they could over book a little. But this wasn't a "little". There was a large amount of people still waiting to get in. It was a disappointing start to the show. Read more...
