Creating and Migrating Smart Device Custom Controls by Using Visual Studio 2005

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 01:30 PM

"By now, every developer, in some way, has experienced the productivity enhancements that the modern rapid application development environment offers. Developers use these environments to build different applications for different reasons. Some applications are structured only for the internal use of business. Some applications are sold commercially. Yet other applications are developed and freely distributed by hobbyists that enjoy contributing to the software community. No matter what the intent, the basic building blocks of each application's user interface are the elemental pieces referred to as controls. ... When a developer uses Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 to create custom controls for smart device applications the process is tedious and error-prone. Creating a custom control that functions solely at run time almost seems trivial. Unfortunately, getting that custom control to properly integrate with the designer can be frustrating for Visual C# developers, and it is not possible for Visual Basic developers. But that was then; now, Visual Studio 2005 has changed the way that developers build design-time support for custom controls."

Custom controls are user interface building blocks, that enables the developers to re-use user interface code on multiple screens and thereby providing the users of the application with a consistent interface. Xin Yan, a software developer at Microsoft for the .Net Compact Framework in Visual Studio, has written a helpful article on how to use Visual Studio 2005 to create custom controls for mobile applications. The article guides the developer through the steps needed to write a custom control for sign-in forms.

"If you have been developing applications by using C# or Microsoft Visual Basic .NET for Windows Mobile-based devices, it's likely that you appreciate the Rapid Application Development (RAD) tools environment. It's extremely convenient to double-click a button control that you dragged from the Toolbox, and, as a result, the tool inserted the handler code into your application. For C++ developers, the process is not quite as automatic. The C++ developer demands flexibility. What comes with flexibility, however, is extra coding that is required for creating and handling controls. This article describes a basic application that creates a dialog box and some controls. Then, it focuses briefly on the code that is required to make use of the dialog box and controls. The article also touches on creating softkeys for the Smartphone platform."

"With an eye to capturing a larger share of the budding market for online music and movie distribution software, Microsoft is announcing a new version of its copyright protection software this week. The software will allow users to play rented content on portable devices, such as mobile phones, and networked devices within the home. The new version of Microsoft's Windows Media software contains DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology, which is designed to protect, deliver, and play subscription-based digital music and video content on a wide range portable devices, including those in homes connected via wireless networks, the company says in a statement."
