"The USA based Verizon Wireless says that over the past few months, the company has filed several additional lawsuits against people and companies who sent unwanted text messages to Verizon Wireless subscribers, offering everything from discount prescription medication, to vacations, to stock information."
Finally Verizon is doing something that benefits the customers, something that can be praised.

You know, I don't even mind spam that is from places I did business with, like Circuit City or buy.com or smething like that. But it's all these financial, viagra and porn spam from places I never even knew existed is what gets me.
Spam itself shouldn't be illegal, jsut unsolicited spam. If you never had contact with someone, they can't send ad emails, simple as that. Also, the mass selling of email addresses should be illegal.

Spam by definition is unsolicited messages etc. (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_%28electronic%29 ). Therefore what you were saying is that SPAM should be illegal.
Messages from people you've done business with are not Spam - just advertising.
