SLAM - Social Location Annotation Mobile

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:43 PM

"Slam is a Microsoft Research Community Technologies Group research project, developed in conjunction with the Microsoft Photo and Imaging eXperience (PIX) team. It is a mobile device-based application that enables lightweight, group-centric real-time communication, location awareness and photo-sharing. The core concept behind Slam is a Slam, a group of people with whom you can exchange messages and photos. When you send a message in Slam, it is automatically sent to everyone in the group to which you sent it. For smartphone users that have the Slam client installed, their phone will buzz and they will have an indication on their phones home screen that there is a new message. For SMS users, they will receive the message as an SMS from the Slam server. Like smartphone users, SMS users can be members of multiple slam groups. SMS users will send / receive messages to a different phone number for each slam group they a member of."

I was really looking forward to trying this program out but unfortunately it does not appear that I will be able to do so anytime soon. The problem with SLAM is that it needs to be installed directly to your phone. Through the website you enter in your mobile phone number and cellular carrier and you receive a SMS with a download location. Here is the fun part, the program is over 2MB in size which you have to download to your phone!

I have two questions for the people at Microsoft that created this program. Question one, do they know how long it would take to download over 2MB worth of data on a GPRS or EDGE connection? Question two, who do you actually know that can afford 2MB of free space on their handset? Even after a fresh install I'm left with only 9MB of free space on my Cingular 2125 and even less than that on my older WM2003 devices. I'm starting to think that no one over there actually uses a Windows Mobile Smartphone. :(

Demand For Mobile Access To Social Networking Sites Growing

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 04:46 PM

http://www.greenlightwireless.net/press/articles/060821_pr.aspx

"Skweezer users are visiting social networking sites with increasing frequency, displacing traditional Web portals and search engines among the list of most visited sites. According to Greenlight Wireless, MySpace is the first social networking site to appear among the top five most highly visited sites by Skweezer's mobile users, which was determined by a weekly traffic report generated for the first week of August. Similar sites that allow users to share information and meet online, such as Flickr, del.icio.us, and Friendster,
have also experienced rapid uptake by Skweezer users in recent months.

I know, I know! You're thinking the same exact thing that I was... What the heck is Skweezer?! After some poking around I found out that Skweezer is a service that optimizes Web pages, searches, and e-mail for use on Smartphones and other cell phones. If you have ever tried to visit MySpace from your phone then you can understand the need for a service such as this! Now if only the URL wasn't such a pain in the rear to type out on my Cingular 2125 ;)

Social Networking Goes Mobile

Posted by Mike Temporale in "ARTICLE" @ 09:30 AM

http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB114411026875415973-lMyQjAxMDE2NDE0MDExMTAwWj.html

"In a development likely to generate dismay from some parents and teachers, social networking sites MySpace and Facebook are going mobile. Tens of millions of teenagers spend countless hours logging on to such sites, updating their profiles, posting pictures, writing blogs and exchanging messages. Until now, the services have been largely tethered to desktops or laptops. Now, Facebook Inc., a popular social-networking Web site among college students, and Cingular Wireless, Sprint Nextel Corp. and Verizon Wireless are starting a service that will make it possible for users to post messages on Facebook's home pages or search for other users' phone numbers and email addresses from a cellphone."

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone here. Anything that the youth of today are spending their time on, better be looking at a mobile solution if they want to be around for any length of time. ;) What I find most interesting, is that companies that deal directly with mobile users (like various online mobile software retailers) have yet to figure this out.
