AT&T's New Video Share Service and WM6: Coming to Blackjack This Summer?

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "THOUGHT" @ 02:28 PM

http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/rumors/atts_new_video_share_service_a.html

"In World of Warcraft (yes, I play), whenever you gain a new level you often get a whole slew of new abilities - your avatar can do more than it could before. When that happens, the standard thing to yell is "Ding W00T!" Well folks, this summer I think the Samsung Blackjack will be calling out Ding W00T! When I loaded the hacked Windows Mobile 6 ROM on there, I noticed something very, very odd. There was a new setting and a hidden application that kept loading itself in the background no matter what I was able to do, and it was called "Video Share." So today Mobility site points us to an AT&T announcement that this summer they'll be rolling out a real-time video sharing service..."

Real-time video sharing? That sounds exciting! Almost as exciting as leveling up in World of Warcraft. ;) I wonder how AT&T is going to pull off this video sharing service? If they plan on making the videos out of the same shoddy Real Video codec that is used for their Cellular Video service, than I think I might have to pass on that one. While Cellular Video looks great on AT&T's feature phone lineup, the same cannot be said for their Windows Mobile devices which usually have screens resolutions that are a lot larger than size. :(

Divx Mobile Player: How The Heck Did We Miss This Release?!

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "SOFTWARE" @ 02:32 PM

http://mobile.divx.com

During my lunch break today I was sitting around browsing the Internet and watching some streaming Divx videos on one of my favorite sites, Stage6. If you have never been to Stage6 before the best way to describe it would be YouTube for Divx users. I do not know how it happened, or why it happened, but somehow I got thrown to a sub-domain of Divx.com for mobile devices. Being the nosey person I was, I started browsing around and low and behold, I found out that Divx had quietly released a version of their Divx Player, dubbed Divx Mobile Player, onto the internet! The best part of this delicious find is that this program is 100% free!

If you are a Divx/Xvid user and would like to enjoy your media on the go without paying the outrageous price of most media players out there, then go check out Divx Mobile Player. You do have to sign up for a Stage6 account to download the application but I feel it is a small price to pay for such a juicy little gem! The program is still in release candidate phase, but so far I have been able to enjoy a couple of old Family Guy episodes I had laying around on my memory card as if I was watching them on my computer! :)

Palm Takeover Expected This Week

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=198100102

"Palm Inc. PALM.O could be sold for at least $20 per share this week and at least four bidders are interested, including private equity firm Texas Pacific Group, according to unnamed sources cited by technology news Web site Unstrung.com. Texas Pacific declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Sunnyvale, California-based Palm, which makes the Treo smartphone, was not immediately available. Sources have previously told Reuters that Palm hired Morgan Stanley to pursue a buyer."

It seems like most people are expecting Nokia to grab Palm. I'm not sure that I agree with that. Nokia doesn't need anything that Palm has to offer, which is nothing more than a name brand and a dated piece of hardware. I think it's far more likely that Motorola or Samsung will jump on it. After all, both of those guys are trying really hard to gain some more market share, which is about the only other things Palm has to offer. What do you think?

Motorola Q Pro in the Wild, This Time it's for Verizon Wireless

Posted by Kris Kumar in "HARDWARE" @ 05:22 PM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/11/11/motorola-q-pro-in-the-wild-this-time-its-for-verizon-wireless/

"First, we heard rumors that Verizon Wireless would be getting an updated Motorola Q, then came the upgraded specs of this black beauty. Then the supposed MVNO version for Amp'd Mobile showed up in our life. Finally we had a sneak peak of what would be the HSDPA version. And now the flurry of pictures continue. However, this time it's for Verizon Wireless and unfortunately the keypad doesn't look as snazzy as its GSM counterpart. A Howard Forums member decided to give us all a little treat and show us this new rubberized black beauty. No word on what the exact specs that Verizon will be giving us, but we are sure they won't neglect us this time around. Now try not to drool and check out some more pics after the break!"

User submitted image

According to these photos Motorola is working on an updated version of the Q for the Verizon Wireless network. The specs are not known at this time; all we know is that it will have the MOTOPRO Mobility Suite, which is a software package aimed at enterprise users. It also looks like it has the same rubberized body style that the T-Mobile Dash (a.k.a. HTC S620) has now popularized. I wish Motorola had changed the keyboard button style from the current rounded ones to the flatter Norman style.

Sources Say T-Mobile USA Will Announce UMTS This Week

Posted by Jerry Raia in "NEWS" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3386

"According to eWeek, T-Mobile is going to announce UMTS in New York on 10/6. The conference event has not been confirmed, but this announcement is imminent since T-Mobile is lacking other major mobile carriers in rolling out 3G in the US. Currently, GPRS/EDGE data is being offered, running on the average of 50-150kbps with EDGE and less than 50kbps with GPRS. Remember T-Mobile got the top spot in the recent FCC radio spectrum auction, successfully bidding 4.2 billion dollars for over 100 licenses. Sources say they will implement UMTS with the 1700 and 2100MHz frequency, which will be different from other countries."

High speed is coming to T-mobile. As pointed out this of course means new devices will be required but like all of us here, I love getting new devices. Now we just need Cingular to get on with it!

New Mobility Connections Conference this Fall in Vegas

Posted by Mike Temporale in "DEVELOPER" @ 07:29 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/lokeuei/archive/2006/08/31/734185.aspx

"Mobility Connections is new this year from the DevConnections folks and this year, will feature updated Mobile content from the Mobile PC and Windows Mobile groups here at Microsoft. You'll also be able to take a look at the new tools and platforms that we'll be releasing pretty soon. (can't talk much about it now). So sign up now and make sure you're there to get your first taste of what's to come in the Mobility space."

User submitted image

Developers, Developers, Developers. It sure seems to be the focus of the Windows Mobile group lately. I keep seeing more and more information to help get the developers in the crowd moving. If you're one of them, this event sounds like it could shed a little light on what's coming down the pipe. You can get all the conference details at the DevConnections website. 8)

Sprint to Sell the Motorola Q Later This Year

Posted by Jason Dunn in "NEWS" @ 05:00 PM

http://today.reuters.com/news/articleinvesting.aspx?view=CN&storyID=2006-08-03T123612Z_01_N03411745_RTRIDST_0_TELECOMS-SPRINT-MOTOROLA-URGENT.XML&rpc=66&type=qcna

"Sprint Nextel Corp. expects to add Motorola Inc phones from the popular Razr family to its line-up in the fourth quarter this year, its Chief Operating Officer said on Thursday. The No. 3 U.S. wireless provider plans to sell phones such as the "Q" and the SLVR from Motorola, Len Lauer told investors in the company's quarterly earnings call. Some analysts attributed Sprint's disappointing quarterly growth to the fact that it did not sell phones from the Razr lineup."

Not much to note here other than Verizon's exclusive lock on the Motorola Q looks like about a six month window. This is exciting to see for the Windows Mobile platform because it means another big carrier will be promoting this phone to their customers, and that means more Windows Mobile users, and potential Smartphone Thoughts readers. ;-)

The Carriers have Once Again Pulled Out Their Hatchets, the Victim This Time is Sling Media

Posted by Kris Kumar in "THOUGHT" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.forbes.com/technology/2006/02/27/cingular-verizon-sprint-cz_td_0227slingbox.html

"We have no immediate plans to run that service, What runs on our network are our services."

The above statement was issued by Jeffrey Nelson of Verizon Wireless and "that service" is the Sling Media's Windows Mobile based service that lets the users of Slingbox view their recorded TV shows on their mobile devices. Why doesn't Verizon want their customers to watch their favorite recorded shows, because Verizon offers it own video service. The one thing I could not understand from this Forbes article is, why Sling Media is seeking consent from the carriers? Am I missing something, shouldn't a customer who is paying $$$ for the high speed data networks be allowed to pick and choose their own services? Which means Sling Media should be free to offer whatever services it feels is right for its customers. Maybe I have not read the fine print on the terms and conditions for data network access. That said, the carriers are known for their walled gardens and Verizon probably leads the pack, when it comes to nixing technology and services that benefit its customers without benefiting its own pockets. When will this end? I would like to take a moment to talk to the carriers - please, the high speed data networks have plenty of bandwidth for your own services and your customers', by blocking your customer's wishes you are turning them away from your own services.

Verizon Expected to Release Q This Week

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 11:15 AM

http://us.gizmodo.com/gadgets/smartphones/verizon-to-release-motorola-q-next-week-156814.php

"Were not sure how reliable the source is, but in an interview this week, a Motorola design manager told one of your faithful Gizmodo newshounds that the Q could be released as soon as next week. What makes us think it might be legit? He was holding a working model in his hands, and it was up and running on Verizons network."

User submitted image

I don't know that the reasoning is all that sound. After all, I was holding a working Q in my hands back in December of last year. I'm also not too sure how many people care about the Q anymore. Hopefully the launch is coming this week as Gizmodo projects. I'm sure that will help bring back some interest. Here's hoping.

T-Mobile to Offer Low-Cost Unlicensed Mobile Access (Voice Over Wi-Fi) This Year?

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1923274,00.asp

"Chipmaker Royal Philips Electronics confirmed that a U.S. cellular carrier will launch voice-over-Wi-Fi technology this year, based on Philips' new Nexperia 6120 chipset. Callers should be able to make calls on their home Wi-Fi networks for "a couple of bucks a month, flat rate," according to Philips' Carsten Schimanke. ... Philips would not identify their carrier partner. But the Samsung T709 we saw at CES showed options to connect to T-Mobile Hotspots as well as home networks. T-Mobile is leveraging its Wi-Fi network as a competitor to other carriers' 3G high-speed cellular systems. With UMA, every home with a wireless LAN and every Starbucks becomes a place with full bars of signal, and that's compelling."

User submitted image
Check out the UMA details on the official UMA Web site.

The PC Magazine article does not state that T-Mobile is going to launch UMA based phone this year, but all the indicators definitely point in that direction. T-Mobile recently announced a $30 data plan that includes unlimited GPRS/EDGE access and also unlimited Wi-Fi/HotSpots access. Now all they need are compatible handsets and some field testing. If you are wondering what makes UMA different from similar VoIP applications like Skype; the difference is that unlike Skype which works only in the Wi-Fi mode, UMA enables seamless switching of the voice call between the Wi-Fi network and the cellular network. So at home and work, you may use the Wi-Fi network and as you walk out of the building, the UMA technology will switch to the cellular network.

T-Mobile To Release SDA Smartphone This Week?

Posted by Kris Kumar in "NEWS" @ 02:00 PM

According to bizwarrior on HowardForums.com, G4 Video Game Television showed the upcoming T-Mobile SDA on one of its TV shows called the Attack of the Show. Not only did they show the much awaited Wi-Fi and EDGE enabled T-Mobile SDA, the show mentioned that T-Mobile is releasing it this week. 8O

bizwarrior said: "I just saw a segment on G4TV on the AOTS show where they had 3 samples of phones to be released next week. One of them was the SDA which is suppose to be the HTC Amadeus branded by T-Mobile. The reviews I have seen on this phone have been excellent. Here is the G4 web page link from the show where they previewed these phones. They also showed the SDA streaming video from the web by wifi. Very impressive."

I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that this information is true. Wish the episode in question was available online on the G4 Video Game Television website. :-( If somebody has access to the channel or has seen the episode, can please confirm if this news is true. The Attack of the Show blog confirms that they received three T-Mobile phones for review but unfortunately the link they have posted for the SDA is not correct. Which needless to say makes things a bit confusing. :? Personally I am a bit tired of all these speculations, rumors and news reports. I want this Smartphone in the stores now!

Update: According our reader hummeriah, who watched the replay of the show, the presenters stated that the new phones will be launched next month. :-)

Is This Mitac's Latest Mio Windows Mobile Smartphone?

Posted by Mike Temporale in "HARDWARE" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/articles/mitac-2005-en.shtml

User submitted image

This Mio features a QVGA screen (320x240 pixels), 64K color, a 1.3-megapixel camera with flash, video recording opportunity, video playback during the incoming call, external screen with a 1.2 diagonal, and an Intel PXA27x 312 MHz processor. Sadly, it is scheduled to have Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, but was back in May of 2005. We really don't know if that has changed since then. It may be 6 months old, but I don't think we've ever posted on it. That's one small looking phone and I really like the size of the external screen. It has yet to hit store shelves, and it might never. :?

Helping to get you in the mood for this weeks premiere movie event, some talented homescreen designers have posted their best Star Wars screens over at Airfagev.com for all to enjoy! I've got the babysitter lined up, the movie tickets purchased, and now I have the homescreen. All that's left is an Imperial ringtone.

Don't worry if you're not a Star Wars fan because there are plenty of other homescreens available at Airfagev.com, as well as Kleinweder's website. Or if you're feeling a little more adventurous, you can create your own homescreens using the Homescreen Designer. [Affiliate] 8)

Samsung i300: Could This Be Your Next Phone & Audio Player?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "HARDWARE" @ 02:10 PM

We've mentioned the Samsung i300 previously, when it was known by it's code-name, "Thor". If you watched the MEDC 2005 keynote speech (and if you haven't, you should) you would have seen a brief showing of the i300. I was really intrigued by the use of the scroll wheel for moving quickly through songs, along with the ability to use a smart filter to find a song. Amazing! I did a little digging, and after contacting a Samsung PR rep I was sent a press release and some photos (though I wish the photographer focused more on the phone and less on the model). Enjoy!User submitted image Image 1 - Image 2 - Image 3"Samsung Electronics, a premium provider of mobile phones, exclusively unveils the worlds first 3GB HDD embedded music smartphone, the SGH-i300, at CeBIT 2005. This development follows its 2004 introduction of the world's first 1.5GB hard disk drive phone. This 3GB handset is the first phone featuring Plug & Play Files-to-go, which allows the phone to function as a removable hard disk drive. Businessmen and students can easily transfer files to / from their computers, as well as store and transfer files in any format conveniently. Capable of storing up to 1,000 music files and featuring scroll-wheel navigation, this handset enables users to easily search files. It is perfect for people with a passion for music as the device supports 3D-sound through its stereo speakers. The i300 also enables users to download and enjoy music from not only online music services but also from OTA music services provided by mobile operators. Also featuring a 1.3 megapixel camera, the i300 supports external memory (TransFlash), which can be installed without the use of a CD via its Easy Install function."You can also download a PDF of the whole press release. MGN also has a couple of low-res pictures taken from MEDC 2005.UPDATE: I can't see to get a clear answer as to when and where this device will be released. It's definitely not coming out in North America first, so we're looking at Asia or Europe. I'll keep digging...

PhoneThemes.com - This is gonna be huge

"Unless I'm going mad, I'm certain that GIF plugins (which allow animations on the homescreen of your phone) have been tried before, but they always had one major drawback - they'd suck your battery life. However, the guys at PhoneThemes.com have nailed this problem.. and then they've gone on to make the whole idea a million times better."

Now this might be something interesting if in fact they have solved the battery life problem. Would you want a screen saver for your phone?

You Think Your Job Has Long Hours? Read This

Posted by Jason Dunn in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.livejournal.com/users/ea_spouse/274.html?thread=10514#t10514

"EA's bright and shiny new corporate trademark is "Challenge Everything." Where this applies is not exactly clear. Churning out one licensed football game after another doesn't sound like challenging much of anything to me; it sounds like a money farm. To any EA executive that happens to read this, I have a good challenge for you: how about safe and sane labor practices for the people on whose backs you walk for your millions? I am retaining some anonymity here because I have no illusions about what the consequences would be for my family if I was explicit. However, I also feel no impetus to shy away from sharing our story, because I know that it is too common to stick out among those of the thousands of engineers, artists, and designers that EA employs."

This is completely off-topic, but I read it and felt it should be passed along, if only to open the eyes of some people (I know mine were) and to put some heat on EA to treat their people with some dignity. Give it a read.
