WM6 Bugs: The Delete Command

Posted by Jerry Raia in "ARTICLE" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=4216

"In the new Windows Mobile 6 Professional, the menus for the Messaging application have been changed a bit. The most obvious is that the left softkey has been changed from New to Delete. The reasoning behind this is that most people have to delete a lot of spam on their phones and they wanted to make deleting messages easier. I dont know who was surveyed for that data, but in my opinion, this was not thought out very well at all. Personally, I never delete messages on my phone."

Since I have yet to get my hands on a WM6 device I cant say if this would bother me or not. I'm not sure why it is being called a bug here though. I thought everything was a "feature".

Microsofts Voice Command 1.6 Reviewed

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.twoinchview.com/124-microsoft-voice-command-16-reviewed

"Speaking is the most natural form of human communication, but paradoxically, its also the most difficult way for computers to understand us today (though someone with truly horrible handwriting might argue that point with me). Being able to control a computer with your voice has been the Holy Grail of computing for years, but weve only inched forward in the past few years the main challenge is around context."

Jason Dunn has done a nice little review over at Two Inch View of Microsoft's Voice Command. What has almost become the application we love to hate, I still think it is pretty good. Even though quite a few people report troubles with headsets, I have found the software amazingly good at understanding what you want.

Microsoft Releases Voice Command 1.6 for Smartphone

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 08:00 AM

"Voice Command transforms your Smartphone into your own virtual personal assistant, letting you use your voice to look up contacts, make phone calls, get calendar information, play and control your music, as well as start programs. Voice Command makes it easier and more convenient than ever to take your digital lifestyle with you wherever you go."

You waited and waited and whined and now it is here! Voice Command not only now officially runs on our Smartphones, it also supports Bluetooth headsets. It's not cheap, $39.99. I have found from its first incarnation that it has always been a good application. However it doesn't seem to work on the BlackJack. :(

Voice Command 1.6 for Windows Mobile 5.0 with Support for Smartphones

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 03:00 PM

http://thinkabdul.com/2006/11/09/voice-command-16-for-windows-mobile-50-support-for-smartphones-bluetooth-a2dphfp-headsets/

"According to informed sources, Voice Command 1.6 for Windows Mobile 5.0 would soon be available for download. And whats more, this version would be compatible with Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones."

Many of you have asked about this. It looks like it is arriving for download in just a few days. It will include native BT headset support and even A2DP. The few times I used it on my Pocket PC's I was impressed that it actually worked! I am looking forward to its arrival.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Extension Now Supports Voice Command

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "NEWS" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.jetwaremobile.com/bthfx/purchase.html

"I finally finished up my hobby project writing an extension that provides additional features to the Bluetooth Hands-free support in Windows Mobile. Beyond the phonebook sync and status indicators support I recently added support to enable using Bluetooth for voice dialing with Voice Command or OEM-provided voice dialers. It also allows you to have your custom ringtones ring through your Bluetooth device (if the device support that feature), and may improve caller ID support for Outlook contacts."

Jim, from JETware Mobile Software has been pretty busy lately with his JETware Hands-free Extension for Windows Mobile phones. Some of the new features in this version are include activating Microsoft Voice Command voice dialing over Bluetooth, using custom ringtones through your Bluetooth device and improved Caller ID! Now I should mention that all of these features listed are dependant on your phone. If you have a phone that does not support some of these features then they will not work. I've played around with it for a few minutes today and it looks promising. If this program sounds like it is up your alley then go try it out, it comes with a 30-day evaluation period :)

I know that a lot of you have been asking for Microsoft's Voice Command software to be ported over to the Smartphone platform. So, I'm sure you'll be happy to see this rumor. However, all we know at this time, is that it is not expected to work over Bluetooth. When we know more, you'll know more.

Update: MGN has posted more features and info about this. You can read about them here.

Debugging .NET Compact Framework Applications Using The Command Line Debugger

Posted by Mike Temporale in "DEVELOPER" @ 11:30 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/davidklinems/archive/2004/06/22/163029.aspx

David Kline is a developer at Microsoft where he has been working on .Net CF. David has recently joined the growing list of bloggers coming out of Microsoft, and he has wasted no time in sharing information that any .NET CF developer would fine extremely valuable.

"I've gotten a number of requests for instructions on how to use the .NET SDK's command line debugger (cordbg.exe) to debug NetCF applications. While you would think this should be pretty straight forward, there are a number of hoops to jump through."

Voice Command for Smartphone

Posted by Robert Levy in "NEWS" @ 01:09 PM

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?ContentId=2121

According to Geekzone, Microsoft has announced (though I can't find anything official on this) plans to release a Smartphone version of Voice Command. Voice Command is a really cool Pocket PC application released late last year which lets you control your device by speaking to it. You can ask it to display a contact, play music from a certain album/artist/genra, open a program, make a phone call, and a few other things. It's become one of my favorite Pocket PC apps and having a Smartphone version would definitely be very cool.

UPDATE: The Geekzone editor pointed me to the original press release and here's what it says exactly: "When the next Windows Mobile-based Smartphones become available, consumers will be able to experience firsthand the benefits of Voice Command to see what has everyone talking."

Microsoft Testing Voice Command Software For Mobiles

Posted by David McNamee in "SOFTWARE" @ 11:36 AM

http://www.betanews.com/article.php3?sid=1063875430

BetaNews is reporting that Microsoft has sent invitations to testers to help out on "Voice Command," a product to control PDAs and phones using, you guessed it, your voice.

BetaNews quotes the invite: "Voice Command works with your PDA or phone so you can use your voice to control your device and receive information in a way that is easier, more convenient, and safer while you are on the go such as in the car or walking down the street carrying packages or even while sitting on a park bench."

This is great! :D The safety implications alone are worth supporting this as much as possible. See the BetaNews article for instructions on how to apply to participate in the beta program. Serious testers only, please.
