Aiko Solutions SecuBox 1.3 - Prevent Data Theft from Windows Mobile Smartphones and PDAs

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone Software" @ 01:15 PM

http://www.aikosolutions.com/products/secubox-for-smartphone/

"Aiko Solutions today released SecuBox 1.3,a powerful solution for encrypting sensitive information carried on Windows Mobile smartphones and PDAs. SecuBox 1.3 offers full smartphone compatibility, secure deletion methods and industry class encryption that effectively guard against data theft and unauthorized access. SecuBox provides a secure and convenient storage for all important and business critical files, including Pocket Word, Excel documents and all other types of files. Data written to this storage are transparently encrypted with strong AES 256-bit encryption."

Every once in a while an application comes along that makes me ponder as to why Microsoft did not include this functionality in the OS from the start. SecuBox is one of those programs. As someone who tends to be a bit absent minded at times, I happen to misplace things fairly often. Who knows, the next time I misplace my phone, I might not find it! If you're like me, or you're just extra cautious, than this is the application for you! You can purchase SecuBox from Aiko Solutions website for $39.95.

Windows Mobile 6 Storage Card Encryption FAQ

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SITES & RESOURCES" @ 09:15 AM

http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2007/03/26/windows-mobile-6-storage-card-encryption-faq.aspx

There's a post over on the Windows Mobile Team Blog that is a must read for anyone thinking of using encryption on their storage card under Windows Mobile 6 device. One of the key limitations of Microsoft's implementation is that you cannot backup the keys. So if your device bombs and you replace it, your data is gone too.

I keep getting the feeling that we might be taking a giant step forward, but it's followed with a couple steps back. :? It's great that we can finally encrypt the storage card, but how many people will take advantage of it if there's no chance of recovering it when the device dies and needs to be replaced? :(

This news is totally focused at all of our FBI, CIA, and Secret Service readers. Although voice encryption is utterly cool, I doubt this is going to be offered on Smartphone.net, our affiliate store. Snapsoft is currently available for Windows Mobile based Smartphones, but they plan on releasing versions for other competing platforms over the course of the year.

GSM Phone Encryption Can Be Cracked

Posted by Robert Levy in "NEWS" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994130

"The encryption system that protects the almost 900 million users of GSM cell phones from instant eavesdropping or fraud is no longer impregnable, cryptologists claim.

Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa say they have found a way to defeat the security system, exploiting a flaw in the way the encryption is applied.

With GSM, the voice is encoded digitally. But, before this data is encrypted, it is corrected to help compensate for any interference or noise, says Eli Biham, who led the Technion team. This gives an opportunity for a "man in the middle" attack, in which the call is intercepted between the handset and the network base station."

Read the full article for details on how this works. The good news is that 3G phones use a different security protocol so they won't be effected by this. Regardless, this is one more reminder that absolute privacy is becoming harder and harder to come by in this technological era. How long will it be before the other cellular security protocols are also comprimised?
