I can't count the number of times I've seen someone asking how to export their SMS messages from their device. Well, now there's a simple and affordable solution to this problem - SMS Exporter. I don't see any option to import, so it's not a perfect solution for those of you that change phones on a regular basis. But at least you have a means to copy your messages off your old one before you wipe it clean. ;) The developer also has a Contact Exporter application in case you don't sync with Outlook and want to copy your contacts off your phone. EU Lawmakers Consider Taxing Emails, SMS Messages

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 05:00 PM

http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=internetNews&storyID=2006-05-26T121239Z_01_L26740888_RTRIDST_0_OUKIN-UK-TELECOMS-EU-FUNDING.XML

"European Union lawmakers are investigating a proposed tax on emails and mobile phone text messages as a way to fund the 25-member bloc in the future. A European Parliament working group is reviewing the idea, tabled by Alain Lamassoure, a prominent French MEP and member of the centre-right European People's Party, the assembly's largest group. Lamassoure, a member of Jacques Chirac's UMP party, is proposing to add a tax of around 1.5 cents on text or SMS messages and a 0.00001 cent levy on every email sent."

This idea has of course floated around in the States too. I doubt it will ever see the light of day in the US but I'm not so sure about the EU. I think it is a horrible idea of course. What do you think?

Increase in Repetitive Stress Injury Due to Text Messages

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 05:00 PM

http://news.designtechnica.com/article9599.html

"The popularity of text messaging via cell phones and other mobile devices has a definite downside: a sharp (ow!) increase in reported cases of repetitive stress injury. A new survey conducted for the U.K.'s Virgin Mobile finds that, compared to five years ago, 38 percent more people complain of injuries from sore wrists and thumbs due to SMS text messaging. Currently, a total of 3.8 million British mobile users now claim to suffer from text-related injuries. The survey also found that over 12 percent of the survey respondents send up to 20 text messages per day, and 10 percent confessed to sending up to 100 text messages every day."

100 a day works out to be one SMS Message every 7.5 minutes for 12 hours. If you're doing that much, I think it's time to stop the SMS messages and try a different way of communication. Like, perhaps calling the person. ;) Seriously, if it hurts to pound out a SMS message, then stop doing it. Doesn't that make sense?

Snooping Your Partners SMS Messages

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 01:15 PM

http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=29&art_id=qw1127303282448B235

"Two-thirds of Swedes secretly read their partner's cellphone text messages, in particular when he or she nips off to the loo, a study published on Wednesday showed. Sixty-four percent of those questioned by mobile portal Halebop for Swedish operator TeliaSonera said they read their partners' SMS messages purely out of curiosity, but one-fourth admitted that they did it out of jealousy."

Wow, two-thirds? That's a pretty high amount of people. I have to admit, that I have never even thought of snooping at my wife's SMS messages. Maybe I need to start. ;) Time for a poll, how many of you - our faithful readers - have snooped in on your partners Text Messages?

Text Messages - The Killer App for Teenagers Cellphones

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 07:30 AM

http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?pid=23571113&containerId=prUS00222105

"Parents should not be surprised if cell phones top their teenagers' back-to-school shopping lists this year, advises IDC. A recent IDC and SMS.ac survey of nearly 8,000 U.S. teens, ages 13 to 18 who use mobile phones, suggests that many in this age group perceive a cell phone as a social necessity 35.9% of teens acquired their phones mainly to use text messaging while an additional 13.3% acquired them to talk with friends. IDC's study also indicates that cell phone usage drivers differ between teen boys and girls. Girls were more likely than boys to have purchased cell phones in order to call their family or to use in emergency situations, while boys preferred to call their friends. Boys were also more inclined than girls to use text messaging on their cell phones girls, more than boys, preferred talking directly to their friends over text messaging them."

While the current cellphone battle seems to be raging around always on email, teenagers are getting cellphones for one of the more basic features - text messages. Ok, so it's not as basic as talking, but it's still up there. The results are not really much of a surprise when you consider that teenagers typically don't have access to always on email system, and all they typically want to do is talk to their friends anyway. I would be surprised if the study found that most bought their phones for it's multimedia functionality, or perhaps it's ability to sync nicely with the desktop. I wonder how many bought their phone because it just looked cool. You know what, I would also like to see the same questions asked to 20-29 year olds, and 30-39 year olds. It would be interesting to see the differences, don't you think? :D

Samsung Patents Method to Unsend SMS Messages

Posted by Jerry Raia in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.phonemag.com/index.php/weblog/read_more/06212005samsung_patents_method_to_unsend_sms_messages

"Ever had those moments where you were sending an SMS message to a friend and you said something you REALLY didnt wanna say? Ever had those times where you regretted sending those hate messages to your ex? Well, Samsung has patented a method than will allow you to unsend a text message once you hit Send."

Outstanding idea and long overdue. Wouldn't it be simpler though to just have a time delay that could be set by the user before a SMS message is sent?

American Idol Ranks in 41.5 Million Text Messages

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.mobiledia.com/news/32021.html

"Cingular Wireless announced today it has set a new record for wireless text messaging in the fourth season of "American Idol." The company recorded more than 41.5 million text messages throughout the show's 12-week voting period, which is believed to represent the largest volume of text messaging in a single campaign in the history of the U.S. wireless industry."

At $0.10 a message, that's over $4 Million. Even if we say that half of the people who sent text messages have unlimited text messages on their plan, so it doesn't cost them anything to send a message, that still means fans of American Idol spent over $2 Million on voting, trivia, and other Idol features. 8O

43% of Text Messages are Spam

Posted by Mike Temporale in "OFF-TOPIC" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000550033984/

"This stat seems a little hard to swallow, especially considering that weve gotten exactly zero spam SMS text messages over the past year, but supposedly 43% of all text messages sent to cellphones last year were spam. The source of this fact? A company called Wireless Services which is in the business of handling text message traffic for various carriers"

That number seems very high, and while it might be true at the carrier level, there is no way the average person is getting that many spam SMS. At least not here in North America, where most of us still pay per SMS. I have yet to get any SMS Spam. I do get spam voice mail messages on my mobile phone, but not text messages. Do any of you get spam?

Receiving SMS Messages Inside a Managed Application

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 02:00 PM

http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/ReceivingSMSMessages.asp

"In this article we describe a way to receive SMS messages in a managed application without the SMS message appearing in the Inbox and without showing a bubble notification when the SMS message arrives. The sample code will run on a Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition device. With small modifications, mainly in the MMI part, it should run on a Smartphone 2003 as well."

SMS is popular for text messaging but developers use SMS based messages to transfer data and trigger events on the Smartphones. The article presents the sample code to capture SMS messages in a .NET Compact Framework 1.0 based application. The limitations of the current .NET CF forces the developers to resort to P/Invoke method to access the messaging APIs. This task will become easier when devices with .NET CF v2.0 are launched. It will provide pure .NET CF notifications interface for capturing the messages from within managed code.

AT&T Keeps A Copy Of Your SMS Messages

Posted by Mike Temporale in "NEWS" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/entry/4079865886576287/

"Responding to our post the other day about how AT&T Wireless keeps an archive of every text message sent by its subscribers, the guy who designed and implemented the SMS text messaging systems for Sprint and a large part of what is now Cingular gave us the scoop on how both carriers offer considerably more privacy than AT&T Wireless: While the Sprint system is MUCH more sophisticated and does retain some data for a long time (billing and usage info, and similar) neither of these systems retain the actual content of SMS messages."

Holy privacy concerns Batman! 8O And to think, people are up-in-arms over Google's proposal to keep your email. At least they told you about it. AT&T has been keeping your personal messages and you didn't even know. :?

Dr. Neil's SMS Utils: Read and Send SMS Messages From Your PC

Posted by Jason Dunn in "SOFTWARE" @ 01:00 PM

This isn't something I'd use myself, because in my circle of friends SMS messages aren't used much, but if you're an SMSer yet find yourself chained to your desktop computer, this software tool might help. From what I can tell, it uses your Smartphone or Pocket PC Phone Edition to send SMS messages via the desktop (and ActiveSync I would presume). It allows you to delete SMS messages from your phone as well. You'll need to have the .Net framework installed on your PC, which you can get from the Windows Update site. Anyone tried this tool yet?
