Technical Careers @ Microsoft JobCast: Mel Sampat, Program Manager and New Hire

Posted by Kris Kumar in "DEVELOPER" @ 12:30 PM

http://blogs.msdn.com/jobsblog/archive/2006/02/09/528825.aspx

"Todays guest is Mel Sampat. Mel joined Microsoft as a Program Manager with the Windows Mobile Group just last month! In this JobCast, Mel shares with us details of his interview, relocation, and on boarding experiences as well as his current role at Microsoft. Besides his primary role managing application compatibility for Windows Mobile, Mel also oversees his teams presence at the MEDC 2006 (The Microsoft Mobile & Embedded DevCon ) and their participation in the ISV Buddy Program and other community efforts. Mel graduated from Illinois State University in 2000 with a degree in Computer Science and Economics, and prior to Microsoft, he owned a small ISV that wrote consumer software for Windows Mobile devices."

Little late for a weekend post but if you can find some time then this JobCast is worth listening to because in this edition Gretchen Ledgard is interviewing Mel Sampat, a newbie Program Manager on the Windows Mobile team. If you are planning on joining Microsoft, then I definitely recommend listening to it; otherwise you can listen to it, to learn what you are missing out on. ;-)

The most awaited browser for the Windows Mobile Smartphone platform has now entered the Technical Preview 3 stage. I have read lots of good feedback from our readers for this browser. And this time I intend to give this browser some serious trial. :-) This updated beta release expires on June 30, 2005 and supports only Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 devices.

Opera for Smartphone Now Available in 2nd Technical Preview

Posted by Jerry Raia in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.opera.com/download/mobile/?man=Windows+Mobile

"A couple of weeks ago, Norwegian browser developer Opera Software released the first, pretty limited, technical preview of Opera browser for Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003. Today Opera today released the second technical preview of its Opera browser for Windows Mobile. Smartphone 2003 users can now enjoy the benefits of a faster and better Internet experience from their mobile phones. This development supports operators' need for choice in OS distribution, meeting their customers' demands for an exceptional full Web browser on their mobile phones."

I've been playing with this for a couple hours now and I really like it. Using the short cuts takes some getting used to but I think this is a real alternative to what comes with Smartphones.

Opera Releases Technical Preview Of Their New Windows Mobile Browser

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 05:00 AM

http://my.opera.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=69630

It wasn't that long ago that we told you about Opera's decision to release a Windows Mobile version of their popular browser. Opera has just made the technical preview (beta) version of this browser available for download. So if you're interested in testing this out, or just want to give something new a try, head on over and download it.

And now for the standard "mother" speech: This is a pre-release version. It could potentially cause serious problems for your device and may ultimately force you to hard reset. You should only install beta software if you are an experienced beta-tester. Oh, and make sure you backup your device first!

Now get out of here and go download your software.

WMP 10 Technical Beta

Posted by Mike Temporale in "SOFTWARE" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/default.aspx

"Windows Media Player 10 is being refined to provide a great experience for discovering, playing, and taking your digital media anywhere. We are still in the early stages, but this technical beta lays the groundwork for the great end-to-end digital media experience coming with the final release for Windows XP."

Microsoft has released a beta version of the upcoming WMP 10. Besides a sleek new design, version 10 will offer a new Auto-Sync feature. This will allow you to keep fresh content on your portable device (read Smartphone) without having to manually transfer files every time. Auto-Sync will only transfer files that match certain parameters like most listened to, or recently downloaded pictures. There is some early feedback that the Auto-Sync doesn't work to a storage card. Hopefully this is just a small bug and can be fixed before the final release.

Be warned, this is a beta application. Installation of this may cause problems with your computer. If you feel the need to try it out, make sure you do a backup first.
